- Nearly there... Engine and gearbox out!
Here's an update on the teardown of my barn find GPZ900R, in this episode I successfully remove the engine and gearbox from the frame.
In this video I continue dismantling my Barn Find Kawasaki Ninja GPZ900R motorcycle, I finish removing the foot pegs, chain, disconnect the wiring loom and finally get the engine and gearbox out.
I'm doing a complete nut and bolt restoration so once I'm down to the main frame I can start rebuilding it like a massive lego kit!
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy!

The reason the chain is rubbing the centre stand is because the stopper for it is part of the silencer assembly you removed.
Ahhh, makes sense!
Loving the vids Ash 👍 Loosening the drive chain sprocket might be fun with the engine out 😊
Haha good point, that might have to wait until I pop it back in 🤣
@@AshRowland I saw a video on UA-cam where this problem was solved of the bike. The guy wrapped his chain around his sprocket his engine on a wooden work bench, and the chain screwed down on the bench behind it, so the sprocket nut could be turned against it and so could be undone. You have an air compressor now so a rattle gun should help you significantly in loosening the sprocket nut.
@@leon0 good shout, I've got a decent battery impact gun so that should do the trick
I have been in since the start of this project. I love the honesty you put across. I would also love to have a rideout with you when you get her up and running. I will buy you a full tank of petrol, a coffee.
Thanks! Haha don't worry about the fuel, I'll take the coffee though ☕️
Good progress Ash, you'll be a Gpz900r expert by the time you’ve rebuilt it!
I'll definitely know a thing or two lol
Nice one Ash, naming > my vote goes to 'Jordan'. An old bike, but still a goer. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
love watching you work, doing real world stuff! Stuff breaks, is rusty, wont come off, etc...the exact same things that happen to the rest of us! So many videos show only perfect outcomes, with none of the real world head scratching issues that come up. Crack on, sir!
Thank you so much, yea, I try to show it as it is, I'm definitely not hiding anything, no point 😊
I really take my hat off to you for doing this and doing it outside👍👍👍
Thanks mate, the season's changing and it's getting much nicer now... Still rainy though 🤣
Great work Ash. Loving the videos.
It's going to be a stunning machine when finished.
Hope so! It'll be a while though lol
Ash. Great channel mate
When you get to doing the frame have a good close look around the rear engine mount/ rear shock area for any cracks.
Mine was cracked, however I suspect it may have been because it had been used with a loose engine mounting bolt due to a failed thread allowing some flex where it shouldn't.
I didnt notice until after I'd blasted and painted it.
Anyway wouldn't hurt to check.
Thanks, I'll definitely give it a thorough inspection once it's down to the bare metal
Ash I've no words of discouragement for you your going great... You haven't hands to bless yourself with however you are taking advice as you should and at the end of it you will have a cracking good classic bike
Thank you, means a lot, I'm looking forward to the rebuild now 😊
Обязательно посмотри состояние распредвала чтобы не было кратеров.
А так ты красавчик 👍🏻
😊 aww shucks, thank you 😊

I’m loving these videos, they’re giving me moral support as I’m doing exactly the same thing and finding the same issues like the three battery carrier bolts snapping off. I just cut my chain off with an angle grinder though as it was rusted solid . Looking forward to the next one 👍
Awesome! Yea, I think they should have put a drain hole in the battery holder, seems to be a bit of a common issue
As said before, stand stop is on the silencer. Also would have been good idea to loosen engine sprocket before removing chain.Having said this I admire you and I'm sure you will will end up with a really good GPZ
Thanks! A couple of others have mentioned about the sprocket, I'll probably do it when I put it all back together 😊
I thought for sure that motor was going on its side!! Good job!!👍👍
🤣 me too!
If you take the wheels off & let the engine sit on the floor it makes life sooo much easier by lifting the frame off the engine 😉 I know this through ownership of a Gpz1000rx 👍
Makes sense, I might put it back on that way 😊
Excellent ash, really enjoying you doing the strip down on the bike and looking forward to seeing you in the next one take care
Thanks buddy 👍
Love your content matey, it's very refreshing to have someone doing something like you are without lots of swearing and swaggering about, like one is supposed to do that because one is a biker.... if you know what I mean?
BTW, you remind me of Adrian Edmonson a bit :-D
🤣 thanks mate, I've actually been a fan of Adrian's since my dad introduced me to The Young Ones. I like my videos to be as real as possible, I don't generally swear a lot anyway, only generally when I hurt myself 🤣
Nice video Ash. Top Tip for when you come to re-fit the engine, fit the engine to the bare frame, not a rolling chassis, it is a LOT easier, believe me. Have the centre stand fitted to the frame, and have the front end ready to fit. Fit the engine in the frame and then pivot the frame forwards and put the stand down, then raise the front of the frame with engine fitted, and then insert the front head stem into the frame, then attach the top yoke, but just enough to stop things falling apart. then you have quite a steady base for installing the rest of the parts. Best of luck with the rest of the build. Looking forward to the next instalment. 🤞👍.
Thanks for this mate, I'll bare it in mind when it comes to it... don't be mad if I do it slightly differently though 🤣
@@AshRowland hey its your bike, do it whichever way you feel comfortable, its just a bit of a pain if you have a complete rolling chassis as that motor is not very light, 🥵. 👍.
@@shaunhardie6077 you can say that again 🤣
Great Job Ash look forward to the next part
Thanks, I'll keep it coming
Thanks Ash - I believe the motor was a 'stressed member' of the frame - innovative at the time like many of the 9 characteristics. I am jealous of your hammer.
Very true... its a good hammer 🤣
Fair play for doing all this on your drive, you seem like a nice guy qnd hope your channel blows up as That thing is going to cost a fortune to restore. Great showing all the bits that go wrong too, As like myself reatoring a gsx 1400 nothing goes right lol
Haha I hope so too, you're right, I've definitely spent as much on the bike as I did buying it in the first place, and that's so far!
I enjoyed this Ash
Thanks, I'm glad 😊
Hey Ash for me I've already named your bike it's
Tom cruiser,
obviously from top gun, I even purchased a gpz 1100 not the 900 but still it was fast and a fun bike
I like it!
Nice one
Thank you 😊
Great work Ash. Someone locally needs to let you let you use their workshop! Also, have you checked out RRC Restoration, worth a look
Thanks mate! Yea, their videos are amazing
Kevin Kawasaki 😄
Brilliant!
@@AshRowland I called my '86 A2 'Kelly' (=Kelly Kawasaki) as Kelly LeBrock of 'Weird Science' fame was my favourite actress at the time. My Z900RS is now 'Kelly 2.0'. Oh well, it keeps me off the streets!😁
Great vid well done
Thank you 😊
Fantastic episode… You sure got a lot done 🤓🤘🏻
Thanks mate, not quite ready to ride it with you yet though 🤣
@@AshRowland we’ll be eating miles, dodging pot-holes, and generally looking cool before you know it 😜
Good video ash’ good you show it’s not as easy everybody else makes out keep it real
Don't worry, I'll always show you how hard things are 😊
I like the wheely engine stand-cum-lift combo. Good idea. Best video again Ash.
Glad you liked it! Its a very handy wheelie trolly thing lol
@@AshRowland with the wheely trolley being made of wood, you could screw a couple of batons to it, correctly spaced to support the engine upright and stable. That would make cleaning, top end disassembly and later on engine reinstallation much easier.
Centre stand stop is probably on the exhaust you have removed
Haha yea, I didn't realise this at the time lol
Good night ash and your wife I love watching your videos of you and building of your motor bike how's your wife when is she going back heiping you I hope that you all are well and enjoying your building of your videos of you and your motor bike please keep up the good work up on your videos on your you tube channel I hope you are all safe and keeping warm
Thank you so much, she is wonderful 💖 I'll get her back on the tools soon!
Nora the ninja? Geraldine the GPz? Bluey the ... blue bike?
🤣
Surely with the reg number it needs to be known as The Beast?
Haha, it literally says "number of the beast" at the bottom of the plate 🤣
You should have waited really until the bike was fully stripped to the frame to drill the broken bolts out.
Probably would have been a bit more sensible I guess 😊
Try using a centre punch crindge watching you
I did for one of the bolts 😊
Hi would it be helpful to take Photos on stripping.
Thanks Barry... don't worry, I've taken loads of photos 😊
Ash,get your self some knee pads, your making my legs ache.
The pads on the floor are spongy 😊
Just cut the chain ffs
Surely it's still good? 🤣🤣
