Fun fact: The jaguars were so "underpowered" that the massive 8 propellor turboprop TU142 could out accelerate the Jaguar. Yes, agreed the TU142 (Ex Indian Navy) were/are the fastest turboprops in the world but being outpaced by a "propellor" aircraft is just ridiculous. Hope the new engine gives this fine aircraft some new purpose.
As upgrading engines for iaf jagaurs is not an options, iaf will have to look at alternative options like increased runway length to take off with more payloads, use of more precision guided weapons to enable to achieve "more with less" Use jagaurs in the Western Front especially in plains of gujrat, Rajasthan, Punjab where flying high is not mandatory due to plain terrain as it would in the eastern front of China.
Simply replace them with Tejas mk2

Mate, the Western Front is the problem for the slow-moving fighter bombers, clear sky with very least ground clutter, and even if PA has a descent AD, they will cost us dearly.
We have near 6 Squadrons of Jag's, it's a good number by any means, and they will be here until 2035 or more, there is a long way to go for LCA and even Longer for the TEDBF and AMCA, which is a right way to move forward.
Furthermore, the new engines would not only improve flight performance and envelope, but also will improve our local capacity even if it's by Semi--knockdown kits and if Honeywell agrees with local assembly, then it's even better due to the numbers needed is large.

I don't want it to be too late, too little and too obsolete.
Bureaucracy can't be changed, it's part of this Democratic process with all its positives and negatives, even if we like it or not.
So, the best option will be to update the platforms which still have airworthiness of 10+ years, generally updated and refurbished aircraft can give another 10-15 years of service at a fraction of the cost, than to buying a new one.
Other Airforce - 5th Gen fighter, 6th Gen fighter etc.

Absolute short sightedness. AMCA was supposed to initially replace Jags,Mig29, Mirages while FGFAs Sukhois. Today that plan has flopped. Rather than investing in the HAL engine and getting a product for long term IAF thinks very selfishly. Those engines could power trainers, UCAVs ,HLFT40 etc. But IAF is IAF.

Thanks a lot, Subodh Bhai for taking up my question and answering it with full details. My take on Indian defence forces is that they are one of the best and most professional forces in the world's but some how I feel the way technology and defence product are changing, the decision maker's (in Defence ministry, Defence forces, DRDO and others - All including), though they are capable but must undergo rigorous training and exposure on latest Product Management and Project Management concepts. This will help India in better planning, better execution and respecting the timelines of the project keeping the overall costs in check. I was reading a case study how SaaB incorporated Agile Methodologies in the development of their Grippen fighter aircraft. Someone in PMO and Defence ministry MUST correct this trend of delays in our defence projects and make people accountable.

Time taken till now was not to make Tejas, but to make the entire ecosystem for different technologies and their research etc, and industrial infrastructure.

In current world it’s an outdated aircraft .. we have shortage of funds and also cannot take hard decision to retire .. even our MRFA is pending from long time and it’s complete delayed .. nothing is moving when assets cost are of high value
No shortage of funds, is lack of investment in R&D. India should develop jet engine as soon as possible. You can't import 1000 foreign aircraft and keep them functioning.

Developing an Engine is a sustained technologcal development. It is imperative PRIVATE initiative be supported ... but with a double edged sword ...with one side having corruption and the other side lack of backbone ..it is nearly an impossible task.
I dream of setting up a startup making small jet engines (yes I know there are a few ... but time is going show the stangths of these companies !!)
Development of After-burner variant of HTFE-25 would have been a good bet as it, or variants, could serve as a basis for an advanced next-gen Jet Trainer / Small Transport / HALE / UCAVs or light combat / COIN aircrafts for africa, s.america markets

If you think it's a good bet, you should order a hundred 40 kN HAL engines.
What is the point in mounting new radar, avionics and maybe an engine on an old airframe? It's like dressing up an old lady and trying to pass her as a young one.
It will be better if IAF closes the order for additional Rafael or equivalent fighters quickly.
If you can pay for - say 54 Rafales, IAF will order it immediately. 😜

Before purchase :It doesn't fulfill all requirements.we need further upgrade or changes.
IAF :After 30 years of purchase an aircraft or any equipment which is been retired by whole world (because it's technological relevance life is over).
IAF :This platform fulfill all the roles and requirement of the airforce and it's 100% mission ready for 2 front battle.
Eg- MIG-21,Jaguar(obsolete and dangerous for pilots).
Mirage,Su-30 MKI ,MiG-29 - Technologically irrelevant.

What IAF should do is, train Naval pilots for using Jaguars for naval strikes using weapons certified on Jaguar like Rudram, Harpoon Sea Eagle etc this could be good interdictors & naval strike planes, IAF can then replace these Jaguars with Tejas 1A or Tejas Mk 2
Furthermore, the new engines would not only improve flight performance and envelope, it would have produced more power which will help in mounting newer Avionics, Sensor suite and ECM-Systems, which present underpowered Adour engines can't.

@@mth469 LCA Tejas itself is expensive at present, due to economics of scale.
The lightweight Tejas is suited for air supremacy, ground assault, and maritime duties with short range and lower payload capacity.
The Jaguar is a ground-attack aircraft, with good range and payload capacity, is best for ground assault, and maritime duties.
As, we don't have any dedicated fighter bombers at present, except for jag's. As compound delta wings are not such a good fighter bombers.
Engine change is least expensive compared to buying a complete fighter.
There are already 2 Assembly lines for LCA, one at Bangalore and the other is Nashik.

Jaguar is 60s design and likely many of the systems are outdated.
As for payload carrying capacity, delta wings have much greater lift due to surface area.
Any advancement on the Tejas feeds into TEDBF which in turn feeds into AMCA.
The life cycle cost of the Tejas is way lower by many factors compared to just about any foreign import.
Finally new weapon integration has become a continuous affair with Tejas as it should be.
Impossible to do anywhere near that much on foreign aircraft having to ask the foreign arms manufacturer's permission and plead for the means of integrating every little thing.
Only indigenous planes from here on.

You are only viewing the LCA perspective, which may result in bias.
What is am I saying is on operational capacity perspective, which we have to enhance, until we get replacements, like of LCA Mk-2, TEDBF and AMCA etc. in numbers.
By the way, most modifications of the Jag's from DARIN-1 to DARIN-III are made in India with very last OEM involvement, in some case none, except for the engine's.
Your passion about LCA is good, but the Operational gap should be addressed in a Smart way, you can't replace a Fighter-Bomber with a Primary Air Interceptor fighter with secondary roles of Ground and Maritime capabilities, which will mature in coming years.
For now, Jags are slow for this moderns age, and these upgrades made it even heavy, slower and this will affect their operational use, even though IAF will have doctrine placed for this particular reason of low service ceiling and speed.
It does not matter much whether the Aircraft is 60s or 24's, if the aircraft cant cope with the contested airspace, which it can do with the right upgrades.
If I am not mistaken, Jags are much more serviceable than the initial batch of LCA, and which has improved now.
The fact of the matter is that the IAF doesn't trust HAL to deliver on time.
All 8 trainers from the first order of 40 LCAs are yet to be delivered.

It will get difficult to operate Jaguar in future so they invest resources in technology which will have long-term use.

All such old aircraft really don't need any upgrade. They must be retired. But, looking at delayed procurements...in a case of attack or weaker detterence Jaguars are given some touch up to assisst the pilots. These upgrades too will take 2 yrs.
- Same is the case of Migs. Airforce wants to throw it away asap. Even was ready for the ideal option of buying 2nd hand F-16 from the US, but that too is expensive for a mere 20 yr period from 2018-2038.
- Tejas Mk2 by 2030 + AMCA production from 2035 will start kicking in. Mk2 will be in service by 2035 and AMCA by 2040. So during this 15 yr timeline from 2024, old squadrons are phased out slowly while maintaining touch ups + Letting others know, that upgrades are there instead of just waiting to retire!
As soon as you pay for at least 54 Rafales, IAF will start decommissioning the MiG-21s followed by Jaguars.

Airframe life is an important factor for upgrading any machine.
Airframe ki bhi life hoti hai. Vo ek factor hoga. Mk2 aane ke bad vo vaise bhi jaguars ko replace kar dega. Multiple aircraft use karne se supply chain maintain karna difficult hota hai.

IAF wanted some new improvement in aircraft that's why delivery is getting delayed because new improvement means new testing and certifications.
