In science fiction we often see the world unite to war against an alien threat. But here, there is no enemy but time and space. No battle except against despair.

I'd be hard-pressed to name four and a half minutes of any movie that I like more than this. For me this scene was perfect, not only because of the choice of going for Mark, but specially for the agreement between China and USA, two rivals in some aspects working together in order to help, hope the world would be like that
Great sequence. Brilliant music and the whole thing made better by Sean Bean raising his eyebrows to Jeff Daniels - that small expression saying we have moved one step closer but there is an insane distance to go.

This is TONS more human than 2001 : A Space Odyssey, even though IT was a grand spectacle that used grand imagery. The Martian was like visiting someone's vacation cabin - although that might not be the greatest analogy.....
I love this scene. But I do wish they had included Johanssen's conversation with their parents. I understand why they cut it (its... quite dark), as they had already discussed earlier in the movie what a failed supply run meant. But having that conversation in there would have really hit home how dark things would have become because there WAS a contingency plan in the event that the supply run failed.
For anyone out of the loop. Johansen was designated as the sole survivor and the plan was for her to eat the corpses of her crew to survive and bring hermes back for future missions.
@@chriscooke9621 and she was designated because as the smallest, she needed the least calories, so would be able to survive from eating their corpses the longest. And because she was small, she wouldn't provide enough calories to any of the others.
I mean, They could return the Hermes with remote control. NASA relies heavily on public opinion for their funding. Doing that would probably ensure that they would never get any funding again.
@@yuvalzauberman5178 It was never about getting the Hermes back home. It was always about getting the most amount of people safely home. Its why NASA expressly forbid this plan (the one to save Mark, as explained earlier in a scene where they could bring home 5 safely NOW vs risking all 6) and the Hermes crew had to go behind their back and force their hand. Had the resupply failed, there wasn't enough food for 5 people to survive a trip to Mars and back (since they had set their course for that and Hermes presumably didn't have the fuel for a direct abort.) So, as explained earlier by Chris, the plan was to have 4 of the 5 members immediately commit suicide and thus maximize the amount of food (calories) available to Johanssen so that atleast she can get back home.

Since hab canvas expands when pressurived, the dome gave him extra storage space. Really they could have just taken it out of the movie since he has those rover trailers in the movie so this solution wasn't really needed.
It was explained in the book though. To be able to run the rovers for long enough between charges he needed to take some of the batteries from the Hab. But as these were fuel cell batteries they were quite large and wouldn't fit inside the rovers without adding some more headspace. And also, as these were designed to be used in the hab, under atmospheric pressure, he needed it pressurised.
