Roses are red Violets are blue Singular they's older Than singular you (I do not take credit for this poem, but it resonates with me considering how many transphobic people on the Internet call my identity "grammatically incorrect")
That is very true. Singular they is quite old. People just need to hear it more. It's like a unique name. The first time you hear it, it draws attention to itself. But after using it enough, it's just another name. I met a person who used they/them. It took all but one day to get used to it. After that it was normal. I mean, I like it. If I was to keep something low profile about a person, singular they is great there too.
We're not allowed to use the word "guys" at work. We are told it's because the term refers to males and females might feel excluded. I'm a female though and it doesn't make me feel excluded at all. I live in the US but I work for a UK based company. After watching this, I have to wonder if we're being told the truth about why we can't say "guys" ... They're very serious about it too. If you use "guys" in a Slack post, you will get a Slack-bot message reminding you not to use that word.
My guess is, most people probably don't even know there's more to the story. You just don't know what you don't know. I'm sure people knew that there was a more complicated backstory to the term, they be more open-minded to its usage but that requires time and energy while also taking the time and energy to explain it to individuals on an individual.
High quality videos definitely make the waits more rewarding, and occasionally the videos more polished and information packed. Nice to see you around!
So, a little side note on German equivalents to "Thou/You": With monarchy, the polite way of addressing people was (as in French and English) the 2nd person plural "Ihr" (vs. singular "Du") which by German grammar carried over to the whole sentence. However, during the 18th century, it was quite common, especially in academia, to use "er/sie" (he/she) to talk to (not about) a person. This way of talking is nowadays usually ironic, ridiculing and a bit offensive. The correct formal polite pronoun is now "Sie" (capitalized third person plural), e.g. "Entschuldigen Sie, Sie haben ihr Wechselgeld vergessen" ("Excuse me, They forgot their change" but talking to the person meant by "They")
It's stuff like this why I love the comment section. It's extremely fascinating to see that even despite being completely different languages, certain norms can spread and subsequently make different languages similar in particular ways. Only to have subsequent changes happen after that making them different. Thank you very much! Always nice to hear from you.
Thank you. An excellent video. Very detailed And very interesting. I usually avoid videos over 15 minutes. It has to be very interesting if I watch a video for more than this. I have always been worried about using guys when it included females. Now I know it’s safe. Cheers. PS I am British living in London. The origin of the word bonfire relating to bones was very interesting.
Thank you, and thank you for taking the time to watch! I really don't like having to make videos so long, the amount of time editing and researching is brutal, but sometimes particular topicd require a large amount of time to flush out properly. Reading up on the word guy, I found people who have commented on it have not often really put a lot of work into looking up its exact origin in terms of its historical usage. I hope this video can be a resource in that regard. Take care.
After working on the last two videos, I needed to shift gears and get a job to save up money. So I got to summer gig as a researcher for farmers. I have saved up enough money to be able to comfortably work on UA-cam for quite a while or so. So, I'm going to give it a shot! Thanks for sticking around!
After my last two videos, I was a bit low on money, so I got a job that was mostly in the summer and saved up money to be able to work on UA-cam for the winter and spring to see how it works out. Because all this, I had to make a big come back video.
damn it has been a long time dude! and as always, you deliver! strangely enough, my english teacher was talking about this a few weeks ago, but not as in-depth as this. but damn, this is some research
Wow good timing on my part. It took a lot of time, I still goofed up some of the end, but it happens. haha. All the details I always feel is super satisfying. Thanks for comment!
I've actually been thinking about this recently, that the second person plural is sort of awkward in english. I remember as a kid reading scriptures from the bible where it capitalized YOU whenever the plural form was used in the original language, and I wondered why english didn't have any better way to communicate this. As extremely regional as "y'all" is, I like the efficiency of the word, and I wish it would spread beyond its American South roots and take its place as a proper pronoun.
I think y'all unfortunately has a visibility issue. It's common for people from the South to try to get rid of their accent when they want to go mainstream. A great example is Stephen Colbert. Successful, smart, and intelligent individuals who are from the south often are embarrassed by their accent because it comes across as an intelligent. And they cover it up. I say, be proud of y'all. Be proud of your coloquiales. Culture is special, and what makes us unique is what makes life a bit more interesting. It has spread in some regard, but it's more of a kind of special case situation type word. But I would argue that one could make a good case that y'all is better than you guys.
Dale, I love how respectful and patient you are in the comments! Also, this was a fascinating video. I appreciate all the research and work you put into this
I've been replying to as many comments as I can for years. I said it then and I'll say it now, to me personally, the best part about making videos is interacting with all you guys. Talking and getting feedback, thoughts, jokes, and so on. I feel a lot of UA-camrs ask for comments because they just want it to boost the channel, not because they genuinely care about what people have to say. I do care. I understand behind every account is a complicated person with their own backstory. And because of that, it makes the fact that you're willing to give me some of your time all the more meaningful to me. Our paths crossed, and you decided to stick around. That is truly fascinating. So thank you.
I just finished the video. It was very well researched, entertaining and informative at the same time so cheers for that ! btw I had to stop the video so many times to read all the things written in there but I don't see any other way to achieve that without breaking the flow so I'm just expressing this feeling. also thanks again for the video I really enjoyed it and being grateful and externing it in a comment it's the minimum. nowdays it's hard to find a work of good quality and length. lastly welcome back ♡
Thank you very much! There was definitely a lot of reading. I struggled to make sure I said enough while simultaneously providing enough information. What some of that text allows me to do is not have to speak as much on particular nuances or important but lengthy details, subsequently making the video. But yes, I knew that it was probably going to affect the flow for people. But at least this is a good medium to have it happen on. Haha I appreciate the kind words, feedback, and the comment! Thank you very much, and have a good one!
One last thing: starting at 30:40, you use the word "women" 3 times, but you pronounced it as "woman". In the plural form, the o in women is pronounced like the vowel in "win." The mistake is very interesting.
Please calm down on how much text you put into your presenation. Most people cannot read all that text while listening to you speak at the same time and it's quite distracting.
This video was especially word heavy primarily to make the video shorter and to cover certain nuances. You could still watch the video without having to read everything, and get a pretty good picture of what's going on. I'm sorry it was troublesome, bu tit was really the only way to cover the topic as efficiently, accurately, and quickly as possible. Thank you for the comment and feedback.
27:17. "Thy gonna like this." Uh....No. Thy means "your." But in thy example you are using "your" to me mean "you are." Which it doesn't. Here's an example that works: "Give me thy hand." "Give me your hand."
Being an 80s kid, "guys" has always been used for either sex. Lately there's been a steep rise in people who want to find offense everywhere to garner attention. All those guys can take a long walk off a short pier!
I feel that the answer is to use it more not less. Words change when people use them differently. Its ability to be used for anybody regardless of gender is quite old, and I think if it was used more often to describe people who are not men, then guy being male feeling like the default would be less of the case.
@@thinkfact Agreed! ^_^ You should do one on the word "retard." Meaning "to slow," it came into use as a less offensive word to replace idiot, imbecile -- and moron, which was coined by eugenicist Henry Goddard.
I see a lot of comments giving you heck for getting some minor things wrong, but I appreciate so much that you said Guy Fieri's name correctly! I mean also just the overwhelming amount of effort you put into the video, but mostly Fieri's name.
I'm from the south but born up North so I use both "you guys" & "y'all". With y'all being my most used & fav one. Luv how u teach about so many different subjects. Thank u & keep up the good work. 👍👏
Thank you, it took a while to put together but I really wanted to talk about this because I haven't seen anybody put together a very detailed and comprehensive video on the topic. I'm happy you enjoyed it!
In french we still use the ''you''(vous) in both plural and singular form. ''Vous'' is a pronoun to be used as 2nd person plural and ''Tu'' is a pronoun to be used as 2nd person singular. However, you can also use the ''Vous'' pronoun as in a 2nd person singular way. It's a polite and respectful way to speak to your elders and to people on a higher social level like judges, police officers, teachers, politicians and etc. It's used less and less every generation since some good manners tend to fade away with time but I still talk that way and teach my children on doing the same.
So "you guys" predates the gendering of the term "guy". Which means all those people complaining about how "you guys" is sexist are wrong. Ha. Though to be honest I kind of like the idea of returning to having both singular and plural 2nd person pronouns. I mean, is there another language on the face of the earth that has both plural and singular versions of the 1st and 3rd person pronouns, but only one 2nd person pronoun that can be either singular or plural?
The gunpowder plot reminds me of that bad episode from GoT where cersei magically gets away with killing everyone by wildfire. The writers were probably inspired by this event
Hum, that would be neat to look into. I know GoT was heavily inspired by the war of the roses. Would not surprise me if GRRM took more inspiration from other events in British history. But who knows.
Really like this video, but it's a little long. I don't know what you could have done to shorten it, but I know if I recommend this to my friends they won't watch it.
Remember Remember the 5th of November The Gunpowder Treason and plot I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot This time we remember the man, not the idea and how the name Guy becomes a synonym of guy.
@@thinkfact Not British, but a fan of V for Vendetta. Enjoy some words inspired by the movie: www.reddit.com/r/DDLC/comments/ds7vqe/remember_remember_the_5th_of_november/
Thank you very much. V is definitely an interesting. His backstory is quite intense. I enjoyed reading about his, it was cool to see how they tied in Guy Fawkes with the character.
In 321 A.D. the pope changed the LAW of GOD ( even JESUS did not have that right ) !!!!!!!!!! Remember the Sabbath , to keep it holy !!! Look at your calendar !!! Is Sunday the seventh day , or is Saturday !!!!!
Great video! Just a couple of days ago I got interested in the poem for the gunpowder plot in November and Guy Fawkes and researched a bit. I knew it had a religious motivation but only now I understand who was Catholic and who was Protestant. Thanks for explaining that and giving a very detailed history of the word "guy". P.S.: A very recent example of a gender neutral usage of guy would be "bad guy" by Billie Eilish. ;-)
Thank you. You mush have run into the poem for the Guy Fawkes day. It's a neat and complex story. It's neat to think that the would only grew out of the Protestant vs Catholic struggle. With out it, we would not be saying it today. This video was planned for the 5th but it needed more time. True, she did. And in a way, she made it more neutral. Thanks for the comment.
Growing up around a large Italian population in the 1970's and 1980's, the younger of those trying to sound like gangsters, I heard every form of 'yous guys' imaginable. Such fun following the history to its roots! Thank you for the information...and a few chuckles.
Oh man, the accents down there are awesome! I love listening to Italian Americans. I'm happy you enjoyed the video, and that my jokes resonated with at least someone. Haha. Thanks for watching and the comment! Have a good one!
It's definitely not popular there for sure. That said, I think all the variations and how to address a bunch of people are special. I hope the South can keep y'all alive.
Yes we do. Born and raised and kept using the word myself because my family used it so much before I started to be around other people.. and then those I met most would use "guy" or "guys" and also still use "y'all" I moved some years back out of the country but always in contact with family and friends. Still used from what I hear.
Schools been trying to make us lose the drawl for a long time so any time around schools and such, you likely won't hear anyone talking using certain words and phrases. Who knows, maybe they've actually winning at taking that part of us away from the newer folks.
Absolutely! And this is probably one of my most information packed videos I've ever made! I've also probably spent more time making sure I've got all the little mistakes cleared up in this video than I probably ever have in any other video. So I hope it was all worth it. Thanks for sticking around!

I don't want to hear the word 'guy' again for a very long time after watching this video
Lol. I could see how 30 minutes of it could be a bit intense.

How were research and editing? Do you work on different projects parallely?
@@fionafiona1146 Yes, but often when one seems to be going somewhere I stopped working on the others and hone in on that.
The gunpowder plot reminds me of that bad episode from GoT where cersei magically gets away with killing everyone by wildfire. The writers were probably inspired by this event
Hazzmati there’s nothing inspiring about d&d!
Mali Rabbit true words
Hum, that would be neat to look into. I know GoT was heavily inspired by the war of the roses. Would not surprise me if GRRM took more inspiration from other events in British history. But who knows.
Really like this video, but it's a little long. I don't know what you could have done to shorten it, but I know if I recommend this to my friends they won't watch it.
Remember Remember the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot
This time we remember the man, not the idea
and how the name Guy becomes a synonym of guy.
10/10
You would not so happen to be British would you? You are a natural. haha.
@@thinkfact Not British, but a fan of V for Vendetta. Enjoy some words inspired by the movie:

Oh hey, fancy running into you here!
@@PriyankaPandit Hello there. Twitter sure didn't like me cursing at China. Now I actually have time for my work without any distractions.
Once upon a time there was a guy named Guy
I feel like considering the flexibility of the word guy, I feel like there's a lot of potential to create a good poem with all the definitions.
I'm last
Its because of Diane's new boyfriend

I missed you too, thank you for sticking! ;)
@@thinkfact right back at you. It takes way more for you to stick, and we appreciate it very much.
I MISSSSEDD YOU
Thank you, I missed you too. :)
Very interesting and informative. I've loved v for vendetta for years and i knew a tiny bit about the history of guy
Thank you very much. V is definitely an interesting. His backstory is quite intense. I enjoyed reading about his, it was cool to see how they tied in Guy Fawkes with the character.
Did I miss the reference to "Guys and Dolls" or was it not mentioned?
In 321 A.D. the pope changed the LAW of GOD ( even JESUS did not have that right ) !!!!!!!!!! Remember the Sabbath , to keep it holy !!! Look at your calendar !!! Is Sunday the seventh day , or is Saturday !!!!!
Interesting, I'll look into it. Thank you.
Guido is semi derogatory term you use towards juice heads and gorillas at the jersey shore
I thought the name guy came from the Roman Name Gaius
Growing up around a large Italian population in the 1970's and 1980's, the younger of those trying to sound like gangsters, I heard every form of 'yous guys' imaginable. Such fun following the history to its roots! Thank you for the information...and a few chuckles.
Oh man, the accents down there are awesome! I love listening to Italian Americans. I'm happy you enjoyed the video, and that my jokes resonated with at least someone. Haha. Thanks for watching and the comment! Have a good one!

Hey guy! 👋
Hey guy. :)
Who's a good guy? Dale is.
You sound like my mother.
Lol jk. Don't tell her I said that.
@@thinkfact Sorrry, I just had to get "guy" into the comment 😂
We don't say guy in southern Alabama.
It's definitely not popular there for sure. That said, I think all the variations and how to address a bunch of people are special. I hope the South can keep y'all alive.
Think Fact lol. I don't see it going anywhere no time soon.a
Happy to hear, I think all the variations of y'all and you guys are special and fun.
Ayyy

Miss you! Been forever! Also I propose a new term. Thyne guyths
Thank you for sticking around all this time. And I like it, it's both old and new feeling.

That sounds like a one-way ticket to alcohol poisoning. Haha

Hey there, hope you are well.
So the bear has awoken once again from its slumber
Absolutely! And this is probably one of my most information packed videos I've ever made! I've also probably spent more time making sure I've got all the little mistakes cleared up in this video than I probably ever have in any other video. So I hope it was all worth it. Thanks for sticking around!
Hi guys!

I thought Guy came from the name Guilliame, like William. Is it the other way around?
ariseira guy is literally a french name. Even today, some people 's first name is "Guy"
