All solid choices. The best punk guitar is whatever guitar you bond with. Personally I love Telecasters and Les Paul Juniors. The real secret to playing a Tele with loads of overdrive is to use the tone knob. Bridge pickup with the tone slightly rolled off is a great rhythm guitar tone. I would also recommend the Seymour Duncan Hot for Tele set. Perfect amp searing punk tone from that bridge pickup!
I'd also like to add that chasing certain tones is fruitless. Don't get too caught up in it. It's cool when a good tone gets dialed in and it sounds similar to one that has been on a record somewhere. But at the end of the day, guitars, guitar players, and equipment are all different. Just be unique and create. Be yourself and create your own tone.

Misfits Legacy of Brutality sounds like heavy Fuzz pedal use, Bad religion were known for just using Jrs with Amp distortion and not much in the pedal dep. if its can be reduced to something formulaic, it might be punk-ish sounding music, but punk is not a music genre, a fashion, or a phase, its a way of life more like a religion, which expresses itself in the above mentioned things among many others. i recently explained this to a couple who were shit talking the fact that im an almost 50 year old with a mohawk and dental floss stiched patches on my clothes, who mentioned how they did that when they were like 20 blah blah (they didnt think i could hear them,) but I walked up and let them know that if you "grow out" of punk, you were always just a poser to begin with, and it wasnt really something that meant to them what it does to some of us, and if normies "got it" it would be rendered meaningless. Thought you had far far more followers. I’m just starting to get into guitar and tend to like more pop punk music which is like to emulate. I just bought an Epiphone SG, that unfortunately haven’t been able to play because it needs a set up (which I can’t afford) before it’s playable. But I’m also really wanting to get a telecaster (thinking squire affinity, or even a fender player if I could swing it)
Welcome to the punk guitar gang! That's a bummer about the setup, but I have a video on my channel where I go over how to do a basic setup at home. There are also lots of other great resources here on UA-cam. Hope you can get that guitar working asap!
@Anndy Negative, any guitar you want is the best guitar for punk. For example, for my punk band, I use Gretsch guitars. My number 1 guitar is the Gretsch Tim Armstrong Electromatic. My number 2 is the Gretsch Streamliner, which is their bargain model. Pump those through my Marshall and BOOM! Huge guitar sound.
As soon as I hear someone say "there isn't a specific punk guitar" I know I'm willing to listen to what one has to say. It's just too often people say I cant play punk on my go-to guitar (Fender Aerodyne Telecaster). I still think its sound kicks ass. It's light and easy to play and I can tweak that guitar to sound in so many different ways due to a P-90 and a single coil combo. But I'm looking for another guitar for more punk/hc only so here I am. Thanks for the video! ❤
I’d recommend the Jaguar. I got one 2 days ago and man is it awesome. I love playing punk and it’s what I play the most. So do yourself a favor and get a Jaguar mine is a Squier from Guitar Center.
I think I told you this before but since I bought my LPJ with a P90 I basically don't touch any of my other guitars. That said, the Mosrite man. I need one. Johnny Ramone is God.
I'm really hoping to swap out for a guitar with p90s sooner rather than later. Want to try something different...I would love on of those mosrites but I'd have to get one custom built lefty and that ain't happening haha
I feel like offset guitars(mustangs, jazz/jaguars, Vs, and explorers) make pretty decent punk machines, especially alder vs and explorers because of how light they can be
I almost exclusively play Ibanez RGs. I still have my first RG, an upgrade from my Samick Strat copy I got for my first guitar. I had a friend swap the pickups for a Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz. I played that RG in punk and hardcore bands as a teen into my early 20s. I'm currently building my sixth RG out of parts, even had my daughter hand paint it.
I know this video is older, but if you’ve still never tried an SG you should check em out. Midrange-y like a Les Paul but with a bunch of top and bottom frequencies shaved off resulting in a sharper, more direct and aggressive tone. They are the absolute best electric guitar for punk rock imho.
Since i know The Offspring, I always interest to Dexter Holland guitar more than Noodle guitar. He use Ibanez RG series with HSH configuration pickup wich is pretty rare to see used by a punk guitarist.
Not rare at all. Almost everyone I know had an RG at some point. I'm 43 & I've seen many a HSH in my day. I grew up in the NYHC scene. Anndy is correct. RG has always been the most common affordable option.
Couple things you got wrong on the pickups things, tele's do have their own sorta single coil in the bridge but it isn't a lipstick pickup, that's like a very different thing, also gretches usually come with "filter trons" which are technically different from mini humbuckers and tend to sound a bunch brighter.
strat style gtrs are versatile as the neck route fits a p90 if you like, a single coil in the middle, and room enough for a fender wide range humbucker or a slant single or whatever, in the bridge. and tele neck is not a lipstick, lipstick are Dano pickups and are totally different.
Thank you! I have an epiphone Les Paul and it's one of my most used guitars. Epiphones are considerably cheaper than Gibson, but my main suggestion would be to go out and try a few before you but one. Good luck!!!
My Top 3 Bands have always been Green Day Sum 41 Blink 182 n ever since i started playing guitar as a kid i said i dont wanna copy them ya know like Billie Joe (les paul) Deryck Whibley (Telecaster) n Tom Delonge (strat) so trying to find something in between is hard as F*** lol .... good vid dude
I'm left-handed. As Kurt Cobain famously put it, left handers basically just use any guitar they can get their hands on that they can afford. That's stuck with me for over thirty years now.
I disagree (sadly) on epiphone quality control. When my guitar arrived at the shop, it had a few paint scratches. One on the neck side and one on the back, near the battery compartment. The dealer said it usually happens on epiphone guitars because, you know, they're cheaper, so I just gave up. It was so disapponting, I was buying my first mid-range guitar and I got this... btw another honorable mention could be the Jazzmaster, used by Tom Delonge, Steve Klein and David Potter. I'm digging the Squier affinity series for its passive pickups and the hardtail bridge. If the neck feels like the strat, I'll buy it and replace the bridge humbucker.
That's a bummer to hear about your epiphone. My LP has been nothing but awesome and is one of my most used guitars. Hopefully epiphone has better QC in the future.
Any guitar can be used for punk but Fenders really make a lot of sense as they can be treated horribly and not be destroyed due to the bolt on neck and the straight non-angled headstock as opposed to something like a Gibson that is way way more fragile.
i got a used junior for 75$ at my local shop no lowballing or anything and it sounds great and the only real problem is a two cracks runnings down it in the finish which im completely fine with it gives it character
I think you should try, which one of these fits better in your hand. I wasn't a big fan of teles until i tried one and it felt, like it was made for my hands. So also consider playability!
Also, not sure if they count as punk, cause they've definitely bounced towards that area, but Nick Martin from Sleeping With Sirens plays a Music Man Stingray. Sorry I keep mentioning them xD
you seem like a cool kid Andy, my old school / old fool advice, get a old van, start a band, drive around playing shows for beer and gas money, make sure theres room to sleep under the van cuz there will likely not be enough to lie down and sleep with the gear inside, and stick to dryish places like California and shit prefereably, then come tell us your experiences, as a seasoned, proven, road tested, real deal Punk. You will be so glad you did, and if you dont you might never forgive yourself, once life overtakes you an gives you responsibilities that make this experience nearly impossible.
@@anndynegative Right on, and Canada fucking brrrr. And sorry to come off like a know it all re the tele neck vs dano lipstick comment, its a very very common mistake. what do you think about using a big muff or other heavy fuzz pedal with an OD IN FRONT FOR HARD PUNK? (sorry caps lock) I recently fell in love with it and tho you need the overdrive like a tube screamer or crayon are my go tos, if you want it tight enough for palm mutes, ive been getting some really cool results.
My HSS strat is in the shop and I want to use it for my pop punk band, I also have a godin icon type 3, it’s like a big chambered les paul with 3 p90s but lately i’ve been killing for an SG, i think SG’s and Les Pauls are key to that 80s east coast straight edge chunky tone
Les Pauls definitely have a thicker tone because they frequently have more wood and are physically heavier...but strats just have the punk rock vibe for me...how does that Godin sound?
@@anndynegative it's very huge but has that clarity from a single coil and it's really really noisey, I use it as my jazz guitar because it's chambered
@@jays2924 I've had luck with using a noise suppressor like the NS-2 for single coil guitars with punk music. Might be worth trying out if you can get your hands on one!
The best guitar for punk is the guitar that inspires you to actually play it. Years ago one could argue it was a Gibson56 57 58 or 59 Les Paul Junior as back in the mid late 70s they were 2 a Penny unlike the 8 10 grand they are today. In the early 80s Westones and Ibanez and Yamahas were popular as Gibsons and Fenders were out of the price range of many.
I have a weird history with telecasters when I tired one out in a gutair store and it was Hella "jangly" and my god was it terrible but than recently there was a squire telecaster that I found months later and it wasn't jangly and I ended up getting it for Christmas later on and it's now my main gutair Don't let telecaster frighten you they are really good punk gutairs once you get them into the right settings
Epiphone Les Paul Junior bolt on version with a Seymour Duncan invader in the bridge. It’s like if Tom Dellonge played a Les Paul instead of a Strat or ES. First serious mod platform and it’s my favourite punk rock guitar. The pickup cost more than my guitar 😂
Honorable mention should be a Jackson Dinky body. Yeah Jackson is more made for metal, but I play a mix of metal tone with punk simplicity and I think Jackson fits with a punk style
@@anndynegative You should go for it man, just make sure when you mention Jackson guitars that you mention the dinky model due to their cheapness and quality
as far as punk guitars are concerned, you have an advantage because you’re a lefty and any lefty playing an upside down right handed guitar looks pretty damn punk
Came across this video from Google, and was like "Hey, its that guy Danny talked about". The content is cool tho, so I'm subbing. Do more vids like this one.
If you won't share your view, why the headline that reads, "What's the Best Guitar for Punk?" How about, "Let's look at some guitars... used by punk guitarists?"
There was a weird thing with guitars for both punk rock and for alternative/grunge where people would go nuts trying to track down this very specific guitar that hasn't been made in decades because so-and-so played it in this Big Name Band and...the reason they played those guitars weren't because they wanted a specific sound but because they were like $50 at a pawn shop. Specifically the Fender Jaguar was made for surf rock in the 1960s right as that genre was pretty much dying out so it was discontinued and nobody wanted the damn things. So they ended up selling for dirt cheap in the 80s and 90s. Then suddenly you'd see people like John Frusciante, Tom Verlaine, Johnny Marr, and most notably Kurt Cobain playing them so suddenly EVERYBODY wanted them. This sent prices for vintage models skyrocketing. Similar stories with the Fender Mustang and Bronco (though their original failures were more due to CBS not knowing what they were doing). The thing is...the demand for these weird Fenders sent the aftermarket for Stratocasters into the ground because everyone was dumping their entry-level Strats for Jaguars and Mustangs...so all the cheap Mexican and Japanese made Stratocasters and the clones - particularly "Fat Strats" with the bridge humbucker - were dirt cheap. So you've got a bunch of dirt cheap guitars with humbuckers in them hitting the market in the late 80s/early 90s as the West Coast punk revival and pop-punk were hitting big. And the cycle began again. So yeah, whatever guitar you can get your hands on, play it. Overdrive and/or distortion used in punk crushes most of the unique tone specific models have and, by the time you get good enough (or popular enough) that what differences are still left matter, you'll have enough experience to be able to go to a guitar store and play the different guitars to find what you like. BTW, Telecasters aren't quite as popular for punk compared to other guitars, but they are HUGE in third wave ska and especially ska-punk. I lost count how many skapunk bands use Teles or clones.
Get a Squier Mustang, baby! Punk as heck. I have a Fender Vintera model Mustang and I feel like an asshat, because I spent $800 on a guitar. Who does that? Just get a Squier Bullet Mustang. It’s $179 and has two humbuckers and it’s surprisingly great.
I've known people who spend way more than that on a guitar. Honestly if you like playing the Squier that's what really matters. You can always swap out the electronics later!
@@anndynegative I think I’m being dramatic. The Vintera Mustang is great, but growing up a punk always makes he hesitant to spend tons of money on a guitar
@@anndynegative Wait! Have you ever tried the G&L Fallout Tribute? Looks like the old SC-2. Has a humbucker in the bridge that can coil split. Neck pickup is a P90. Sounds good and It’s only like $400 new.
@@anndynegative Oof. I’m a lefty too. I made the choice 20+ years ago to betray our people and always play kind of crappy, all in the name of being able to play almost every guitar.
My Tom Delonge Epiphone has had chronic neck issues that I later found out were super common. I had the crack in the head stock repaired once, and now the head is completely off, and needs to be fixed again... I can’t bare to not have it playable.. The Fender was better. Mine was stolen. I agree. Fender Strat is the punk thang.
I haven't been able to try out one of the ES333s cause im a lefty...but I've heard pretty mixed reviews about the epi ones. The epis I have used (stock models) have all been great, but I agree Fender for the win
@@anndynegative I'm a lefty also..by choice since I was super young, but I play right-handed... I've always wanted to see how I'd fare playing a left-handed guitar... I wonder if after over a decade thats even worth it? hehe
I've been debating between sounds...humbuckers vs single coils! I have a strat but now wonder if I should invest in something with humbuckers so I have the option. Not a huge epiphone fan. Love ESP, Fender and Cort though.
Humbuckers are going to be a huge sound difference. Think of them as two single coils wired together, way better for distortion and high gain. ESP has many humbucker guitars, and Fender makes a bunch of models as well. I would definitely suggest picking one up if you have the funds!
If you don't want to buy a new pickguard to fit an HSS. You should try some hotrail single coils(basically a humbucker the size of a single coil) or you can try yngwie malmsteens Seymour Duncan single coils. And di Marzio hs 3 I believe. They are both stacked single coils. So you don't get the hum from the single coil, when applying heavy distortion.. But you keep the brightness from the single coils.
@@user-VonBand I've never owned a guitar with P-90s. Every time I see someone playing one it always sounds so awesome. They do sound incredible for punk & hardcore.
The tele neck pickup is not the same as a lipstick. They are wound drastically different. The tele neckpickup has got a deeper warm sound unlike the lipstick pickup.
Older teles did use lipstick pickups, it was only in recent decades that they switched over. You can certainly still get teles with lipsticks in the bridge. Depends on the guitar
The word you was looking for with Johnny Ramone guitar tone is Chainsaw or Buzzsaw. I been into music my entire life and Punk Rock since '91. I'm not gonna dis on you on what's real punk or not. Music is such a subjective art and what most don't realize is that it is subjective. Anyone that's got a band- songs that got them through some tough times is cool to me. You carrying the torch for punk to the next generation is great, pop or true punk. Let folk listen to what they want. Your good in my book kid
I couldn't agree more! This is the kind of attitude we need to have. Let people like what they like so we can keep our favorite genre alive. Also YES buzzsaw. That's EXACTLY it!
any f*cking guitar is good for punk , the thing about being punk is usually to play with whatever you can , if you make punk and wanna be playing with some gibson sh*t or whatever don’t do it , you’re not meant to sound good like idk some Queen stuff , you’re meant to play with the most simple and affordable instruments and usually do it to rise against smth , not to sound “comercially okay” , but good video anyways I guess ❤
I play a Squier classic vibe strat - I put a Duncan invader and 500k pot in it. It’s better than American fenders I’ve owned. I even used to have a Gibson SG standard, but I sold it and never looked back!
Honestly if you like playing it, then it really doesn't matter what kind of guitar it is or how much you paid for it. I have a USA Strat that I LOVE, but a brand on a headstock does not a foot guitar make
all good but you have mess in pickups names and constructions :D Tele neck pickup is not a lipstick pickup. It is just pickup with inner construction of classic fender single cased in metal tube. Gretch guitar displayed in your video didn't had mini humbuckers but filtertrons.
Hey dude amazing video I have a question I use a epiphone Les Paul at home it’s amazing! But live it KILLS my back so I bought a fender Mexico strat but plugged into the same amp the strat doesent sound good at all?? Same settings the epi sounds killer but the strat alotttt brighter any suggestions? Confused here as the strat is amazing as it’s light and looks rad af
It depends on what pickup you have in the Strat. Also, the wood of the body effects the tone, because there's more wood in an LP it has a different sound (and is heavier). Try tossing a humbucker in the bridge if find the Strat to be too harsh!
@@anndynegative thank: for the reply man!! I actually have a humbucker in the bridge I’m thinking of getting a higher output one if that would help? It’s just stock rn I also want a junior (epiphone of course I’m not made of money) but seems to be out of tuning problems with it advice there ?
True punk rock guitar: a second hand guitar that's literally held together with duct tape and stickers, pick-ups and knobs are random and pieced together, preferably of cheap make, generally old LPs and Strats
Can't simply beat Squier HSS Hardtail Strat, got it for 80 quid second hand and it's comfy to play, sound has decent attitude and it may even survive nuclear apocalypse.
I'd be really interested in crust punk and power violence tones and what gear a lot of those bands used to get that nasty brutal tone. idk if yr the channel to cover that stuff lmao but it'd be cool
Here is the thing with punk musicians, they didn’t have any money so they played whatever guitar they could get for cheap. So saying there are specific guitars for punk is a misnomer.
I've seen punk bands play semi-hollows. The biggest challenge is controlling the feedback. Keep the gain to a minimum. Try to keep the guitar as far away from the amp as possible. Move your guitar all around the room & test out the angles & sweet spots. Certain spots & angles will give you more feedback.
I have an epiphone LP $200 beater that was basically dumped on me by my ex, because the wiring in it was bad, and her ex had given it to her, broken like that, and promised to teach her how to play. I threw a GFS Dream 180 humbucker in the bridge, a GFS Dream 90 'Bucker sized P90 in the neck, and then completed it with a Seymour Duncan Active Blackouts Preamp/volume pot drop in kit. One of my most killer sounding, best overall playing axes is a god damned beater/student guitar with aftermarket parts. The metal and punk tones I get with D'Addario EJ21 strings and tuning to D standard or lower is actually surprising, almost as surprising as the tuning stability in Drop-A tuning lmao. Meanwhile some elitist douche somewhere struggles to keep their $2600 actual Gibson in tune between takes despite their "Play Authentic" printed Tee. Sad.
Hey man great video! I'm a guitar noob and in due time I'll be picking up an electric. I want to sound like the dead Kennedys! Do you think I could acheive that with a telecaster? Thanks in advance!
Hey, I'm knew to the guitar world lol but I want to buy my first guitar I just wanted to ask what is the difference between a hss strat and a regular strat
@@tapeworm3673 I would suggest the humbucker. That way you can switch to the single coil if you want, but have the option of humbucker which will work well for higher gain punk stuff

I agree! There is no right or wrong guitar for punk, I used to use one I got out of the garbage 🤣
Another way to describe classic Tele tone would be spanky and twangy. Very popular country music guitars. But also unbelievably versatile.
Spanky and twangy, those are good words! I got stuck on Jangly for whatever reason. They certainly have a unique sound
Drop a Hot Rail humbucker into the bridge position on any Tele and rock the fuck out!! 🔥🔥🎶😁👍🏽✊🏽
I agree with what you said about strats :) i picked up an epiphone lp and love it, but still prefer to play my modded squier strat. 🤷
There's just something so great about them!!!
The best guitar for punk is the Squier Bullet Mustang. Dirt cheap and pretty solid for the price point. Fun video, by the way. Very informative.
I'm hoping they make a lefty some day so I can try one out. But cheap and solid are basically the ideal guitars for punk!
@@anndynegative I think you can find a left handed Mustang online somewhere and for quite cheap but I'm not sure
I remember seeing US Bombs back in the day and Kerry Martinez playing a green Gibson Explorer. Hey why not? It looked great ❤
I’d recommend the Jaguar. I got one 2 days ago and man is it awesome. I love playing punk and it’s what I play the most. So do yourself a favor and get a Jaguar mine is a Squier from Guitar Center.
I've been thinking about it for a long time. They released a lefty squier Jazz Master last year, I'm hoping to try one out sometime!
@@anndynegative I copped the Squier Jaguar Daphne Blue and man is it awesome. If you've never played a Jaguar before I highly recommend it.
If you can't find the Joan Jett Melody Maker, Michael Clifford has come out with a signature melody maker that's based off of Joan's.
That's awesome!
The lead guitarist from Snapcase has a telecaster, he has that “jangly tone” but it’s super distorted and heavy
Yea, they're surprisingly versatile guitars in terms of tone
For lead a stick American Telecaster. For rhythm, any Gibson with a humbucker on the bridge pickup (my preference is an SG).
I feel like offset guitars(mustangs, jazz/jaguars, Vs, and explorers) make pretty decent punk machines, especially alder vs and explorers because of how light they can be
Absolutely! And they just look so cool. Something about a p90 into the right amp is a killer tone
Who doesn't love an RG? I have a prestige made in Japan. Absolute shred machine.
I know this video is older, but if you’ve still never tried an SG you should check em out. Midrange-y like a Les Paul but with a bunch of top and bottom frequencies shaved off resulting in a sharper, more direct and aggressive tone. They are the absolute best electric guitar for punk rock imho.
Real punk= any guitar you can get your hands on
@evltwin Extra points if you stole it.
Since i know The Offspring, I always interest to Dexter Holland guitar more than Noodle guitar. He use Ibanez RG series with HSH configuration pickup wich is pretty rare to see used by a punk guitarist.
I see a lot of RGs in the Hardcore punk and metal scene for sure, I think they are more affordable so smaller bands tend to use them!
Pennywise ibanez
Not rare at all. Almost everyone I know had an RG at some point. I'm 43 & I've seen many a HSH in my day. I grew up in the NYHC scene. Anndy is correct. RG has always been the most common affordable option.
i love your approach to this subject, great video!
Couple things you got wrong on the pickups things, tele's do have their own sorta single coil in the bridge but it isn't a lipstick pickup, that's like a very different thing, also gretches usually come with "filter trons" which are technically different from mini humbuckers and tend to sound a bunch brighter.
Ahhh thanks!
strat style gtrs are versatile as the neck route fits a p90 if you like, a single coil in the middle, and room enough for a fender wide range humbucker or a slant single or whatever, in the bridge. and tele neck is not a lipstick, lipstick are Dano pickups and are totally different.
love your video, omg thank you so much I've been doing research for weeks, still cant quite make my mind between a gibson les paul or an epiphone.
Thank you! I have an epiphone Les Paul and it's one of my most used guitars. Epiphones are considerably cheaper than Gibson, but my main suggestion would be to go out and try a few before you but one. Good luck!!!
Gosh, well the intro let me know I've clicked the right video
My Top 3 Bands have always been Green Day
Sum 41
Blink 182
n ever since i started playing guitar as a kid i said i dont wanna copy them ya know like Billie Joe (les paul) Deryck Whibley (Telecaster) n Tom Delonge (strat) so trying to find something in between is hard as F*** lol .... good vid dude
All amazing bands/guitarist's...maybe just duct tape the three guitars together???
@@anndynegative i call it All Time Trio haha
Hopefully epiphone has better QC in the future.
they are just scratches though its not that horrible it gives it character
Any guitar can be used for punk but Fenders really make a lot of sense as they can be treated horribly and not be destroyed due to the bolt on neck and the straight non-angled headstock as opposed to something like a Gibson that is way way more fragile.
Couldn't have said it better myself
i got a used junior for 75$ at my local shop no lowballing or anything and it sounds great and the only real problem is a two cracks runnings down it in the finish which im completely fine with it gives it character
Cracks and wears and chips just make guitars more awesome in my opinion!
thanks for the vid! you're so entertaining!
My Epiphone LP Jr. has always been and still is my go-to guitar to smash out power chords for punk
That's a great guitar!
I'm a 15 year old metal guy and I use an ibanez and a bottle of pepsi
Ibanez makes some pretty great guitars! Not sure how a Pepsi sounds turned up tho 🤣
All I wanted was a Pepsi and she wouldn’t give it to me!
I've always been an Ibanez guy. You can never go wrong with Ibanez.
I’m an odd duck, I play a flatline tele for most punk. Love the sound
Flatlines are cool as heck, not a lot of lefties tho 🙃
Love Teles! Currently using a sticker bombed Tele with a P90 in the neck!
If you can get one, check out the gretsch cvt stump-o-Matic.
For punk rock, would it sound better using a tele or an hss strat?
HSS Strat will be more versatile, but lots of great punk bands use teles. Really just go with the one you like better!
I’m stuck between these two guitars as well for my next guitar (not specifically just for punk, but I’m keeping it in mind)
All good, I'm sure they fit under the Metal/Punk umbrella. Also, if you think they're punk, then they're punk!
you seem like a cool kid Andy, my old school / old fool advice, get a old van, start a band, drive around playing shows for beer and gas money, make sure theres room to sleep under the van cuz there will likely not be enough to lie down and sleep with the gear inside, and stick to dryish places like California and shit prefereably, then come tell us your experiences, as a seasoned, proven, road tested, real deal Punk. You will be so glad you did, and if you dont you might never forgive yourself, once life overtakes you an gives you responsibilities that make this experience nearly impossible.
I did do all that, but I did it in Canada so it was quite cold on many occasions! I'm much older than I look
@@anndynegative i’ll def be on the look out, thanks dude!
You hit the nail on the head. Play with what you can get your hands on and that's all that matters
I have a weird history with telecasters when I tired one out in a gutair store and it was Hella "jangly" and my god was it terrible but than recently there was a squire telecaster that I found months later and it wasn't jangly and I ended up getting it for Christmas later on and it's now my main gutair
Don't let telecaster frighten you they are really good punk gutairs once you get them into the right settings
Yah I've noticed teles are very fussy, the same goes for fuzz pedals.
There are tons of players that I've seen use Jacksons, especially in the hardcore punk scene. I may consider this for a follow up video 🤙
Amazing! It's awesome that you found your way here 💚
If you won't share your view, why the headline that reads, "What's the Best Guitar for Punk?" How about, "Let's look at some guitars... used by punk guitarists?"
The pickups in the GreTshes are not a mini humbucker. They are a Filter'tron.
The tele has not a lipstick pickup in the neck...its just a single coil with a cap on top
strats are usually 3 single coil pickups it’s not rare for there to be a humbucker but it’s way more common to see 3 single coils
Commonly yea, but it's also very common to see punk/rock strats with humbuckers in them
American Tele stock or Gibson SG faded would be my preference.
Any guitar with a fairly high output humbucker. As long as it feels good to you.
At the end of the day I feel like literally any guitar is good enough! Tho high output humbuckers are awesome
This is the exact reason people should just play what they can get. If it sounds good and is fun to play that's all that really matters!
@@devinftf I'm a lefty so my options are a bit limited. I have played a G&L tele that was super nice
I wonder if after over a decade thats even worth it? hehe
@@justinTime077 you probably made the right (get it?) Choice. I like being a lefty, but the guitar choices are limited. Better now, but limited.
Consider putting a humbucker in your strat if its worth it to you
If you don't want to buy a new pickguard to fit an HSS.
Considers p90 pick ups they sound awesome for punk tones
@@user-VonBand I've never owned a guitar with P-90s. Every time I see someone playing one it always sounds so awesome. They do sound incredible for punk & hardcore.
I have gotten interested into John McGeoch Yamaha SG1000 Also Is there a big difference between Punk to post punk Guitars.
Billy zoom’s gretsch is a solid body guitar.
The best guitar for punk is my Washburn A5 that got stolen in a burglary. It had a Michael Jackson sticker on it and I miss it.
The stock Telecaster neck pickup is not a lipstick pickup.
for me the most iconic punk rock guitar is the glossy cherry red Gibson SG
That's a super nice guitar, and if you like that's what matters 🤙
Lagwagon live in Sydney used sg
The best guitar for playing punk its the cheapest guit you can find ✌️
BJA is SO punk, PLEASE! Candy ass corporate rock.
any f*cking guitar is good for punk , the thing about being punk is usually to play with whatever you can , if you make punk and wanna be playing with some gibson sh*t or whatever don’t do it , you’re not meant to sound good like idk some Queen stuff , you’re meant to play with the most simple and affordable instruments and usually do it to rise against smth , not to sound “comercially okay” , but good video anyways I guess ❤
This is basically my entire point , yea!
@@anndynegative yes sir!

@@anndynegative i think most hardcore players have a tighter tone than that stuff. idk information on a lot of those bands is sorta sparce

that being said,
You're absolutely correct
Here is the thing with punk musicians, they didn’t have any money so they played whatever guitar they could get for cheap. So saying there are specific guitars for punk is a misnomer.
Exactly
I'm thinking of buying a semi-hollow guitar. Got any advice for the best control board/amp settings to make a semi-hollow sound totally punk?
As soon as you add any distortion it's going to feedback a lot, meaning you'll already be 90% of the way there!
Sad.
Yellowcard, NFG, Emery?
Hey man great video! I'm a guitar noob and in due time I'll be picking up an electric. I want to sound like the dead Kennedys! Do you think I could acheive that with a telecaster? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I'm knew to the guitar world lol but I want to buy my first guitar I just wanted to ask what is the difference between a hss strat and a regular strat
