  • What a thrill after three months (really, two years!) following Ryan's great adventure, to be right there on the water as he made his record landfall. I got to be there in person, wishing well to EVERYONE who has followed this amazing trip. The smile on Ryan's face was fantastic - such a look of satisfied accomplishment. He's my hero. And the boat just did an incredible job on the type of voyage for she was never originally intended. Clearly a tribute to the skills of her designer/builder, Russell Brown. And to the skills of all who got her fitted out for the trip, especially John Franta's team at Colligo.

That is an extremely challenging 14,000 miles. He was going against the prevailing winds which means the waves are much worse. The seas around Cape Horn at the bottom of South America are some of the worst on the planet. Many have died at sea there. He spent 93 days with no co-driver, so support, no gas stations or rest stops. At times he was about a thousand miles from the nearest human. Yes it used to be a four month commercial voyage on large ships. Doing it alone in a small boat with no engine - that makes it a big deal. Hope that context helps.
