- Brendan Fraser's seemingly unstoppable comeback continues with The Whale by Darren Aronofsky, which deservedly won him a Best Actor Oscar.

We had the good fortune to meet Brendan Fraser at Fan Expo in Toronto. My mother told him about her back surgery, because she has the same type injuries that he does. He was very moved and actually teared up. He gave her a hug, held her hands, and thanked her for coming to visit him. He's not just a great actor, but more importantly, he's a good man who genuinely loves his fans.
Was it 2019? It has grown to a genuine regret that I didn't consider meeting him, even though I met Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Peter Capaldi, Sean Astin, John Travolta, Edward James Olmos, Sean Young, waved at Jeff Goldblum, and hugged Cory Feldman for all the shit he has gone through. Oh, I remember Ke Huy Quan at that same event promoting the Goonies, as if missing Brendan then sucks hard looking back. Next time they're on tour, I shall be meeting both gentlemen.
@@Raidmasterprod My Mom is 5 feet tall and almost 80 so the stars always want to talk to her. That's how we ended up talking to Brendan Fraser. He was a real gentleman and so happy to see her. It was a great convention and I desperately wanted to meet Travolta and Goldblum but they were there on the Sunday and I could only attend on the Saturday. I might add that I am extremely jealous that you met Travolta and Goldblum. Extremely jealous. Like really extremely jealous. However, thanks for giving Cory Feldman a hug. He needs to know how much his fans love him and support him.
Hollywood is no place for good men. It's no wonder he got black-listed by those Satanists.
We Canadians have been behind him since day one because you know...he's canadian.
Just about every story about Brendan Fraser tells you he's a phenomenal human being as well as a fine actor.
See I grew up with a dad who was 800 pounds. His life, particularly his impending death, was an imminent and ever present conversation and topic in my childhood. I'll never forget being brought into a doctors office so the doctor could tell me and my sister, in front of my dad, that he would never live to see us graduate high school let alone have kids (and he didn't). We werent allowed to talk about his weight because it made him upset or embarassed him. Now I wish we had. When I seen trailers for this movie I was nervous.
It was such a good movie, despite me having to pause to cry every few minutes because it reminded me soo much of things I had forgotten from my childhood.
Fatphobia does not exist. Just people who care enough to WANT to see you live longer and those who don't want to hear it so they label it as something in an attempt to shut you up.
Thank you for sharing such a moving story. So very sorry you lost your Dad way too soon. I agree with you 100%.
Having had to deal with it in both father and husband, I completely agree. Doesn't mean it will work, however, as I tried an intervention recently with a cousin who is now no longer speaking to me. I couldn't live with the PTSD, so it's probably just as well. There's nothing worse than watching a loved one destroy themselves and they won't listen to you or anyone.
@@senryu93 i think the main problem is... nobody seems willing to listen to them.. there is always a reason for binge eating/morbid obesity.. these people need to be listened too, it is ultimately what they are crying out for.
I got a lifelong friend whose over 400 lbs. Tried for years to help him lose it and get into more than tv and TikTok. He won’t live long enough to see his kids drive their first car. Got to a point where I had to cut him out of my life. There’s only so much you can do.
@@amojak If they don't want their problems solved, there's not much you can do for someone like that. The only way to get better is to confront your trauma head on.
If you've ever had a chance to hear Brendan speak off-camera, you realize quick how intelligent and insightful he is. He really is a rare breed in Hollywood, he genuinely cares about other people.
yep it was a case of hollywood chewing up, and spitting people out like a meat grinder. I am so glad hollywood is suffering right now.
As Claudious Octavius(Augustus). Once said. "Actors are people who pretend to be someone whom they are not. Thus professional liars". Brendan Frazier is not...
Every speech he’s given has been so intellectual and heartfelt. He naturally uses metaphors in such a poetic way, and his gratitude is palpable. So happy for him
Hmmm
He’s also really funny. I loved his story arc on scrubs
"I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life!" That moment in the trailer is what sold me on seeing it and throughout the whole movie Brendan made me cry with the raw emotion he brought to the role.
That perhaps is the most poignant part.
About life and what we feel it’s worth, especially our own.
And what this character goes through to validate his own life in his dying days.
Im SO glad I never watched the trailer as that piece of text would have ruined the ending for me because basically most (if not all) movie trailers these days give away all info from the get-go. I have quit watching trailers, they ruin all movies for me these days.
that scene won him the Oscar I think. Shame the asian lady got robbed of supporting oscar by Jamie Lee curtis who won it despite barely even having any screentime in EEAAO...

I watched this film on streaming, not in a theater (which I partially regret) but man that line was one of those that just sucked every ounce of air out it was so…raw. He earned the fuck out of that Oscar.
I hate how people see the film as fat phobia.
It's not about finding Charlie disgusting. It's about finding sympathy for what he has physically become and finding the drive to cheer for his last shot at redemption.
Saying this movie is fat phobia is like saying Tarantino is racist dude because he makes a bunch of racist character with many N words spoken, atleast that's how I see it. It's okay to disagree
@@K0m30ng if Tarantino is racist he’d never cast Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction
I can't believe that some people are trying to pitch obesity as an identity group. 😬
At this point, I can't care if anything is racist or sexist or any other ist, because *everything* is nowadays. If you start to apply the abhorrent "logic" of those people, everything "problematic"
@@chucksenhowzen9740 Correct me if im wrong but I think Samuel L Jackson is his most casted actor period.
There’s not an actor alive more deserving of a comeback than Brendan Fraser. It’s wonderful seeing him back on the big screen getting recognized for the amazing talent he is.
Now we just need to Corey Feldman back to acting.
Corey Feldman can come back when he actually names names of anyone and everyone who diddles kids in Hollywood. He's milked the victim teet too long with nothing to show for it.
@SD Not as easy. Thing with Hollywood, they are vile and stick together. As soon you start name dropping, Hollywood will do everything in their power for you to NEVER have an acting career ever again. They’ll blacklist you from even all B movies, and any director that still takes the chance will probably have their movie blacklisted from all theaters and streaming platforms. Sadly the best way to still have a career in Hollywood is to keep the dark secrets of Hollywood to yourself.
Hollywood is only helping him now because he is willing to hate on christains that's it. Branden had a few decent memorable movies but I'd hardly call him a great actor
His comeback only required doing a pro gay anti Christian movie.
The saddest part about this movie is that it's implied if Charlie had met Ellie sooner, she would have saved him, and he would have been the supportive guardian she was sorely missing in her life. It's a story about regret and hindsight and is definitely a cautionary tale to take action and to not let your problems fester under the rug before it's too late.
nicely put
yep........i'm a festerer.

😥
It's an antichrist story
This movie inspired my brother to fix his relationship with food, start working out, and commit to losing weight. Any movie that can do that for someone deserves a 10/10.
The film doesn't say "fat is disgusting", it says "addiction can be disgusting", which I think what those who rail against it are really railing against. The fact that a movie so daringly shows that when you choose to succumb to your addictions, they will destroy you. Those who relish in their addictions hate being faced with that truth.
I agree with you and even if the movie said that obesity is unhealthy. That would have been completely fine by me. I think that almost every other movie about someone obese that came out recently is more about how they are good the way they are, this of course is not true. Obesity is not fun and can be really damaging to a person and since I have dealt with this problem too. I don't see a problem in this movie portraying it that way.
Also if the people on twitter actually bothered to watch the movie, they would find out that the movie is about much more than "fat guy unhealthy".
Well said, well said! 👏🏾
Fat *is* disgusting though. And for a reason.
Well, to be fair, his own daughter is disgusted by his apperance, although in her case there is a lot more to it. But every first reaction to Charlie's appearance is negative, like when he turns on his webcam or goes out of the door to have a look at the pizza delivery driver. So, i see where those comments come from. That ofc doesn't change the fact that those people are absolute lunatics and their agenda is trash. This whole fat-acceptance thing is gross and pisses me off - and i'm saying this as someone whome it definitely couldn't hurt to lose some weight. But as the drinker said, it's not really about obesity in the end and it's not even about being gross, it's about the self-inflicted destruction, so there absolutely is no blanket statement about fat people here -> In Charlie's case, his obesity is killing him, a huge part of it being because he refuses any kind of treatment, so why isn't this a blanket statement about people refusing treatment ? I pity people with such one-dimensional thinking...
It's a good movie, i'm probably not as ecstatic about it as a lot of other people seem to be, but it definitely wasn't a waste of time.
It doesn't have to say it when it shows it so clearly. This is why I say I am pro fat shaming. Literally nobody with bad habits has ever improved themselves without feeling at least a little ashamed of themselves first. Emotions serve a purpose, especially negative ones, and people would be a lot healthier if they could understand why they feel how they feel and listen to their emotions.
Obese people have been furious about this movie because "it's paints being 'big' in a negative light." The thing is... It IS negative to be 500 lbs. I struggled with obesity when I was a teenager. I came out the other side of it but ONLY I could change. I didn't shout down films or people that may mention the word 'fat' within 50 yards of me.
It was a beautiful film and I am glad Fraiser made it back.
The fact some people believe being obese is okay is absolutely delusional. The fact that this is a 'controversial' statement is even more delusional.
It doesn't help that people like Lizzo are making obesity look glamorous. I'd like to ask her how many 80 year old morbidly obese people she has met.
When I saw the backlash from groups criticizing Brendan for wearing a fat suit and calling it "appropriation" I was baffled. Brendan is a heavy guy who struggles with his weight who took measures to make himself look bigger for the part. My response to those critical of him was "Fine, remain miserable and angry about everything for the rest of your lives ya twats. It's the same crowd that that got angry when Brian Cranston played a quadriplegic. Pathetic activists.
I mean body positivity is also guilty of this somewhere
Obese is bad. There, I said it.
Will Smith falls, and Brendan Fraser rises.

What was most compelling to me was watching these 5 actors just pour their heart and soul into this movie. Its really all set in just one room. No distractions, just raw emotions from the actors.
It's always a man who plays this kind of role. Three guesses why
Personally thought the movie sucked and I was pretty much bored of it after an hour. Each to their own but after *The Last of Us* review from drinker, I'm not sure his recommendations are worth anything but a pinch of salt
I think it really deserved a nomination to best picture
The best part of this movie is the fact that it didn't rely on CGI, it didn't rely on the most famous actors in social media, nor did it focus on political drama. This movie was amazing because of the writing and because talented actors, who understood the character's pain. The casting director was spot on and the director played his cards perfectly. Hats off to this film indeed.
@Michael Women can never be portrayed in a negative light such as this doomer coomer failed couch potato.
Brendan Fraser will forever be remembered by me for his performance in the Mummy. I loved it
And now this film too! Dude's got some serious range. I am just so happy he's back.
The Mummy is great. It’s so frigging funny yet engaging. Love it!
Encino Man for me - Betty Nuggs!
Didn't like the second and the third but the first movie was an absolute classic for me
Blast from the past
The scene with Charlie and his ex wife was simply phenomenal. Just 10 minutes of amazing actors acting. You think his ex wife is some alcoholic bitch up to this point, but you see that’s she actually extremely sympathetic towards Charlie and still has some love for him. You see that she genuinely tried to be a good mother but has completely lost hope in her daughter. Charlie’s unwavering optimism despite his condition is so inspiring and beautiful. And I know this moment has been talked about to death, but the line “I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life.” Is delivered with such raw pain and desperation by Fraser, it just broke me instantly. Brendan is one of my favourites - old school male lead in The Mummy and Journey to the Centre of the Earth, funny and cute in George of the Jungle, he’s just adorable. The way he got screwed over by Hollywood was a disgrace
Man I gotta do a recap of those movies!
Badazald was awesome to
The mummy is based. Classic strong male protagonist who's brave, competent, skilled, and funny. Paired with an equally competent and great female protagonist.
Of course in a way, in a big, cruel sense, it is karmically inevitable to get screwed over by Hollywood one way or another. It's a stardom entry fee.
I agree
Brendan is one of my childhood heroes from The Mummy and George of the Jungle. So I am glad he finally won an Oscar. I hope he gets more roles.
Same here!
if only he hadn't won it because he played a gay obese person, 2 things the USA is trying to normalize nowadays.
Bedeviled is still one of my go-to romcom movies. He's hilarious in that one.
I think people worshiping celebs are stupid
I used to be 400 lbs, so this movie kind of hit close to home for me. I was never immobile, but I definitely related to the binge eating, and like Fraser's character, a lot of my eating was due to emotional reasons. Overeating is an addiction, no different than someone shooting up heroin on the streets, and The Whale captured that better than any movie I've seen.
EDIT: I never expected so many replies, but in case anyone was curious, I did lose the weight and got down to 200 lbs. Basically, the only way to get through it is to change your mental outlook on food. Instead of viewing food as some type of reward or emotional pick-me-up, view it strictly as a a source of energy. Instead of viewing ice cream as a tasty treat, view it as cold poison that will ruin your insides. It may sound extreme, but it works.
I hope your doing OK
(sigh) It is a very difficult mountain to climb.
Sending you hugs, I hope you’re okay now. I’m a binge eater too and I feel you completely.
Too bad you couldn't go back and do it NOW INSTEAD!
It must have sucked in the past when the ONLY choices were like Pizza or Chinse. While NOW you can get ALMOST ANYTHING delivered!
It's like 'Housebound Haven' these days, where you can get nearly ANY food item delivered right to your door within an hour.
And have nearly any desired PRODUCT dropped off within 10 feet of your couch in 2 days or less!
Like I wish I could be an alcoholic NOW instead of back in my 20s! It sucked having to actually VISIT the 'The Brewers Retail' when I ran out of 'stubbies', but now they'll happily bring along a SIX-PACK when you order any food!
I get you. I never became obese thank god. Just overweight. But as a teen I WAS an emotional eater.
And I am never going to deny that at all. I was fat as a kid, in my teens, and early twenties. Because I was comfort eating.
I was depressed and I ate really bad crap to distract me from my emotions.
And of course the horrible irony is that these crap food MAKES people depressed, and then you eat more to escape the depression, and the food makes you more depressed, and it's just a spiral going down.
It's horrible how this addiction and these kinds of food has just become so accepted in our modern society.
Sure you can eat a whole bag of chips a day! That's just not normal! ..... no... No it's not. That's pure starch and seed oil right in your gullet with no nutritional value at all. It's poison.
There was a teenager around my old hometown who would eat constantly. Didn't know what was going on in his personal life, but I heard his family was negligent. The last time i saw him was on a bus, wheezing and looking severely depressed. A couple weeks later, he passed away in his sleep at 17. My younger sister would chat to him during high school and really impacted her. The Whale reminded me of that addiction and how it can impact someone's life.
We had a guy like that in HS, he died his senior year.
It is so sad to hear of so many young people dying from their obesity & inner demons. 😢
Rest In Peace
That's really sad. I hope he's at peace now.
Lard ass is in his forever box, boohoo 🤣
My father died abruptly of complications from obesity when I was 19. Growing up, he was so damn affectionate and wanting to be involved in my life hut, I was embarrassed of him and disgusted by his gut. In the end, he died before I could ask his forgiveness and before I could let him impart the meaning of being a man. Part of me still hates him but, it's because his actions stole our time and I can never get that back. Cherish your parents while they yet breathe, and learn as much as you can from them; they're not immortal.
Hope you're doing alright, friend. I bet he understood, and loved you even at the very end. If I can ask, was he battling just food addiction? Or was there other substances involved? Don't answer if it's too much.
@@GanondorfsWife
Don't take this the wrong way but, in my experience, men sharing details about their personal lives with females almost never ends well. I expressed _that_ bit about my father because I felt it conveyed the importance of cherishing family before they're gone and simultaneously the shamefulness of obesity given its consequences for one's self and others.
That's as much detail as anyone is going to get and even if I were to confide further information, it wouldn't be with a vindictive creature who excels in emotional manipulation to get what she wants or appear virtuous in public. I've endured and seen my brothers endure enough hell to know better than to trust you so, save your breath, Fräulein.

the eating, the p*rn, and the affair all seem to interconnect in hedonism, charlie living all for just what feels good and euphoric. THAT is what ruined his life, and THAT is what makes it such a cautionary tale. you don’t only have to struggle with binge eating in particular to shudder at the thought of what your compulsions could do to you, your body, your loved ones, and your whole life.
Hmmm, good analysis, food for thought, nice!👍
I don't see it about hedonism at all! I see it as someone who lived his life for others because he didn't feel worthy of being able to live for himself. If you remember his marriage wasn't a happy one. He finally decides to do something that makes himself happy (the relationship with the student) but after 4 years the love of his life ends his own life because of the treatment from his family. Charlie feels responsible for that as well.
So Charlie took a chance on allowing himself to be happy and that turned to crap so he is carrying the grief of also knowing that he's just a miserable as he would have been if he stayed in his marriage but at least then the people around him would have been happier (note I'm not saying happy, just happier than they are) so why did he even try to be happy himself?? His old belief that he didn't deserve to be happy proved itself to be true in his eyes so he carries the guilt of everyone else's pain as well.
In order to cope, he eats. The only coping mechanism that won't pain anyone else (at least in his mind) and only hurts himself, who he feels deserves it anyways.
Very perceptive! I agree. Definitely a cautionary tale against hedonism.

Nah!! I'd watch it again and again. People have said that they can only watch Aronofski's Requiem For A Dream once because it was so depressing(with an amazing Oscar nominated performance by Ellen Burstyn who SHOULD have won), but I can watch that movie again and again just like The Whale
Brendan Fraser movies made up the most of my pre-teen to young adult years. Yeah, as a guy who suffered from prematurely thinning hair, I was SO JEALOUS of the IMPRESSIVE mop Fraser displayed in The Mummy franchise. So I have to admit feeling a sense of PETTY PLEASURE when photos started leaking of his REAL hair, which was thin & patchy, and actually looked WORSE than mine! lol
Words cannot describe how incredibly happy I was to watch Fraser win his first Oscar!! I grew up watching George of the Jungle and Looney Tunes: Back in Action as a kid, so seeing him make it to this point is truly remarkable! I really hope this will bring his career back on track ✊🏻
Looney Tunes: Back in Action was fun to watch as a kid. I wonder why it got such bad reviews.
@@Joetino yeah it sucks it got bad reviews, because I think it’s a love letter to Looney Tunes and a great poking fun at Hollywood 👍🏻
@@micahcaraballo5917 Hollywood needs to be poked fun at.
@@Joetino especially now, since they’re kinda in a messed-up situation 🤷🏻♂️
I never forgot about Fraser. I'm so happy he's finally getting the good turns in life he deserves.
Brendan Fraser's Oscar speech was really heartfelt. The man has gone through a lot of bad shit in his life in the last decade. He deserved the Oscar.
What does one thing have to do with the other? Apples and oranges. You're saying he won not for this movie but for overcoming a rough life? Where's my Oscar?
What does his personal life has to do with anything?
@@inboxnews ok, lets compare apples to apples. this man deserved the oscar, not the other 99 overhyped, smoothbrained, self-absorbed, detached from reality, preachy, heroin/alcohol/attention addicted fucks we call hollywood actors. yes, oscars are supposed to be given for a singular performance mainly, but his past suffering make people root for him, i cant believe you dont see that. oh and dont even fucking pretend oscars werent given out for other reasons than 'acting' lately. its a circlejerking shitshow anyway and we should let it die already.
The three sentences dont have to be connected. Read them like this.
Brendan has been through a lot.
His acceptance speech was great.
He deserved the Oscar (for his outatanding work.)
He won an Oscar when nobody cares about the Oscar’s ? Man, this guy can’t catch a break.
That's the most heartfelt compassionate 'Go away now' I've ever heard from the drinker... movie must've been really good to have that effect on him.
His character in Scrubs to this day tears me up, absolutely incredible performances all around.
ahhh you dick, i'd totally forgot about Bens funneral episode ... aaand now i'm tearing up.
Oh my, I forgot this, even though I love Scrubs and his performance in it!
Oh yeah stunning job!
Ooo,bloody.
Where do you think we are?
Gets me every time 😢
It's those enormous ocean blue eyes he has. He's always, at least from what I've seen, acted with his eyes. You can really see the all his pain in his eyes; the physical pain, mental and emotional pain, all rests in those giant eyes that you can't look away from. His mannerisms and tone keep you locked on him every time he's on screen, not just in this movie, but even in his goofier works like Air Heads and George of the Jungle. I've always thought he was a brilliant actor, one of the best of his generation and he was so close to being type casted for a minute before his unjustified exile. I missed him so much for such a long time, it was so satisfying to see him in this movie and watch him do what, at least, I always knew he could. I can't recommend this movie enough, just be prepared for a really heavy, no pun intended, emotional struggle. Even if you're not overly empathetic, you'll feel every word he speaks in this film. And the supporting cast is equally moving in their emotional renderings towards a man they know, barely know, love and are angry at. This is one of the best examples of storytelling, character building, and point blank filmmaking I've seen in such a long time. Stupid Hollywood. "Just when I thought I was out, you pull me back in". This movie is worth watching at least once in your lifetime, because it will stay with you forever.
You're reading too much in to what's "behind the eyes". You can root for the guy but be aware of seeing things that are just not there.
I saw the film this weekend with a friend and we laughed and rolled our eyes at the unoriginal cringe. This was a pure Oscar-bait film. And the fact that the film had the typical anti-Hollywood msg deserves no respect. I hope Fraser finds better work.
@@fz7694 Nice bait fam. Lmao
I agree. I haven't seen the film yet, but just watching the bits shown in this review, I felt myself getting emotional seeing his expressions.
bruh i wanted to cry just watching this review
I love how this can be somewhat relatable to Brendon's real life even though the circumstances are different but I think he lived through the shooting relating to his real life circumstances which won an Oscar, one of the most deserved Oscars.
Even a soulless entity like myself struggled with this one. Spent the last half hour in tears. 😭🤣
“I need to know that I have done one thing right in my life”😢 that line got me, and the ending part of the movie. It’s been a while, a long while that a movie made me cry, 🥲and am thankful for that, thankful for Whale and thankful for the cast and production and mostly thankful for Brendan Fraser. 🙏
Nice thoughtful comment.

@@ivanleon6164 yeah, I like the U-turn in his career. 🙏

Brendan Fraser was always a good actor, I'm glad he's back.
Yeah, people seem to forget that he did 'School Ties' AND 'Gods & Monsters' with FRIGGIN Ian McKellan! Both I think BEFORE 'The Mummy' franchise even started?
This was Brendan’s single best performance. It was both grotesque and beautiful. I literally teared up during it and I haven’t done that in a very long time.
Have or haven't?
Brilliant! Charming! Brutal! Heartwarming! Heartbreaking! An astounding performance that is hard to believe could ever be duplicated. ❤
I've been waiting for Brendan Fraser to make a comeback for years, I'm so happy for him!
The Mummy is a fantastic movie. It's sad that the rotten Hollywood's environment robbed us of Brendan's talents the last years.
Yes the mummy 1 and 2 are awesome. Though tbh it is not because of brendan frasers acting. I think many actors could have played that role well. The whale on the other hand he steals the show
@@TheBarser uh you know universal try remake the mummy without Brendan fraser he got replaced by tom cruise and the results is really bombed in box office and critics

He and Ke Huy Quan getting an Oscar felt pretty good.
Watch Jesus Revolution instead
So proud of Brendan! He has been through so much in his life and I am glad he is finally made a comeback and is getting the recognition he deserves.
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE RAMPANT SEXUAL ASSAULT, CHILD ABUSE, AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN HOLLYWOOD
Especially now that they all think they are in a position to lecture the rest of us - celebrity culture is lame.
I literally just finished watching it for the 1st time and wow...That last 5 minutes had me in full on tears. Brendan really deserved that Oscar. He truly has come full circle
I can't be any happier with Brendan Fraser winning the Oscar. He surely deserves it.
Brendan Fraser in this movie delivers one of the greatest acting performances I have ever seen. I kept wondering where Brendan Fraser went and now he's back and I couldn't be happier. It almost makes me want to cry. I remember feeling sad when I saw this guy in stuff when I was a kid and he disappeared. Just wow, this dude is back and won an Oscar and I cannot wait to see what he does next.
Jesus, when she opens the door for the last time and the light hits her face, it hits me so hard. The camera cuts from her silhouette against the sun, she's leaving, she doesn't care, to her face with the sunlight on it, she's completely broken down and crying because she cares SO MUCH. It's an incredibly powerful emotional scene.
I believe it was the film makers way of expressing that she was his angel here to save him.
You've got to love it when an actor after years of having been shunned into the Hollywood wilderness performs a perfect comeback story arc in real life by winning the best actor Oscar in his first leading role in years.
Dang, Brendan Fraser went through was a lot but I am quite pleased that he is back. The Mummy was the original action adventure movie that got a lot of us into movies while George of the Jungle is a certified childhood classic.
I recently showed my wife The Mummy, as she had never seen it before.
She absolutely loved it, and thought Brendan Fraser was so charming and likable in the role.
Strong man. I would've divorced her if she had never seen The Mummy.

She's not from North America originally, and when she grew up there were not a lot of available movies to see, nor the time and/or money to see them.
It's been a real treat to introduce her to classics that she gets to see for the very first time.

this movie broke me down. I have a lot of self-destruction in my family. My father was unable to help himself and eventually died early because of his choices. bravo to Darren Aronofsky for choice in casting and impeccable vision. bravo to Brendan for this historic performance.
Arnofsky brought back 2 great actors back to Oscar winning performances... what a maestro.
It's all a charade.
I liked how Gary from Nerdrodic said it. Aronsfsky makes slice of life but it's worst type of life.
It's great that he won an Oscar for this, he really deserved it
Bro… he won because he played a fat gay atheist.😂

A month after my wife died, my brother and his girlfriend were at my house, watching Blast From the Past. Still in a deep depression from the loss of my wife, I was barely paying attention, but something about that movie got through and I found myself laughing out loud. That was when I realized maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel, and thus began my recovery. I eventually felt enough better to write and publish a few books and I'm doing okay again; but I will be forever indebted to the good people who worked to make that movie so good, because it was exactly the blessing I needed. All good wishes.
wait... the whale is a story about a man who left his marriage to be with a boy... and the boy committed suicide and thus he started over-eating??
and we're supposed to feel sorry for him? and the christian in the movie is seen as the bad guy
Exactly. Brendan Fraser is a very good actor and I'm glad he got some recognition but this movie is a hard pass for me.
Yea, it’s extremely tasteless
I guess I've been living under a rock and never knew about all the crap that happened to Brendan Fraser. I guess I just assumed he walked away from it. I've always liked him, even in crap movies. So happy that he got a win like this.
All I knew about was his run- in with the sleazy Hollywood executive dickhead who tried to rape him in a hotel room, and that obviously was a traumatic enough experience that he stepped away from Hollywood to get back into a healthier mental state.
I didn't know about his divorce or his back problems.
I was fortunate enough to see this film at the theater, and it warms my heart to know you enjoyed it too. The Whale is such a painful, wonderful, and emotional experience by my all-time favorite director and starring a kindhearted and tortured man who brings new depth to the main character in a performance for the ages.
This brings up some really sad memories for me. I had a manager about 20 years ago who had lost her husband in a tragic railroad accident. We saw her go from being about 200 pounds to so large she could no longer walk. She used one of those scooters to get from her car into the office. Eventually the toll on her body was too much and died from a massive hear attack. She was a really sweet lady, though, and treated everyone incredibly well.
Meanwhile, Hollywood gets what they want. Fraser's redemption requires him to play a gay guy. This is no triumph for Fraser, it's a public show of submission. Remember why Dave Chappelle had to walk away from a highly-successful show because they kept insisting that he dress in drag? Remember that even _The Rock_ had to wear a tutu. No thanks... Btw: for those who forget, the _actual_ reason Fraser got into trouble in Hollywood was for complaining about a guy groping him in the 2000s....
He deserved to win his Oscar this year for his great performance in The Whale. He seems like a genuine, nice man, too.
The Oscar win was so wholesome, his happiness when he won his award was so tear-jerking.
Wholesome? The Oscars?
Sure, buddy ^^
Oscars is woke trash. What is wrong with you people?

@@arsenelupin9697 Yeah Brenden deserved it

A wonderful way for an always-underrated actor to make a comeback. I hope to see more from Brendan.
I always loved Brendan Fraser in the 90s and early 00s ❤️
I didn't follow celeb stuff back then, so I had no idea what he had been through. He's a fantastic actor though, so honest, authentic and genuine in his performances. 👍🏻
Absolutely ... he is an amazing actor, Encino man, The mummy etc etc
Another "the message" movie approved by the drinker...
You know it's a good film when it has another controversy on Twitter xD
Brendan Fraser's comeback story is truly an inspiring story, we couldn't be happier about it! Love him since The Mummy, hope we'll get another The Mummy with him in it. Well, maybe not
The fact is that as the credits rolled, it felt like having watched an honest movie that just wanted to tell a story. With elements like religion, a strong and independent daughter, homosexuality and obesity it could have been an absolute dumpster fire of a movie in the wrong hands, but instead it just told a moving story and it's getting all the credit that it deserves...
See, Hollywood? It's perfectly plausible to be socially-conscious without being "woke" (a term I'm beginning to hate using). All it takes is a cast of writers and actors who were hired based on their objective talent, not their demographic.
@@JohnGardnerAlhadis The dude is literally beating off to gay porn and has his life ruined by "Christians". Ya know cause every white heterosexual male is a closet homo. Nah, not woke at all.

There are few people as universally loved as Brendan Fraser, even though he hasn't been in the spot light for many years as soon as people are reminded of him they all just wishes the best for him.
He seems like a genuine good guy and that really comes across in his work. His fans have never given up on him.
Is nobody going to comment on the fact the Brandon Fraiser was shunned by Hollywood after he recoiled at the homosexual advances of a powerful Hollywood Producer and now the price of his return to Hollywood is to sympathetically play a closeted homosexual who loses "the gay love of his life" and his will to live because the Christian church was so mean and unaccepting of him after he had an affair with (i.e. groomed and molested) one of his students? For portraying this character he is not just welcomed back but given an Oscar? WTF? Drinker, I love your reviews but seriously, no comments about this "coincidence".
Wow! The only actor who actually deserved an Oscar in the last 10 years, the rest were just to tick a box
I mostly agree, Gary Oldman however also deserved it for playing Winston Churchill so brilliantly.
Is it truly your honest opinion Leonardo Dicaprio didn't deserve an oscar for Revenant?
What about the joker?
Yep, DiCaprio most surely didn't deserve one for revenant, it was one of his lowest performances. He deserved it for so many other roles, but not for revenant. It was more for his life work. So what he almost died during filming, there is no oscar for almost dying, there is one for the best acting, which he didn't do much in revenant.
Joaquin Pheonix?
Pretty good timing for a movie like this to come out. It’s easy for us to see how other addictions ruin people’s lives when it’s on the big screen, but I have never seen a movie display this type of addiction. Like any other, it ruins not only your life but the lives of those close to you.
I remember watching Fraser in The Mummy and thought no one would have done a better job than him.
Even Tom Cruise failed to top him.
And I was thinking. Since 'The Rock's' star has apparently been 'falling', maybe it's perfect time that their 'fame' has reached close enough equilibrium to RESURRECT 'The Mummy (hunter) v.s. The Scorpion' King?
At least he tried to reconcile with his daughter knowing it would be painful. Many dad are not like that.
honestly whenever he won that oscar after such a long time away i honestly was like damn fair play
Nothing better than another movie bashing Christianity.
I didn't know the same director made Black Swan and Requiem For a Dream, two of my all times favorites, i'm definitely watching this, thank you Drinker
The critical Drinker likes "THE MESSAGE" every now and then
He's never called out the anti-Christian themes or the pro-sodomite ones either.
Okay, I decided to watch the movie, and this is what I felt:
The whole time I felt a constant sense of uneasiness, an uncomfortable pressure in my chest, as though I was being drowned. The main character, Charlie and everything he has gone through....felt relatable. I don't have all the same issues he has; however, I feel like I and many others can a feel a sense of closeness to his feeling of helplessness. To feel like the mistakes you made are too bad even to try to fix them. It's haunting. From beginning to end made me realise something about my life that makes me want to do better. I won't spoil it, though I wish for those who feel the same way I do, that the fact it IS hard to make the change means that the hardship is going to be worth it, no matter how slow. Not everything is going to work as you imagine it because life is disappointing, but if you can accept that sad fact and look forward, you'll one day be at least somewhat satisfied with the one you are then then the one you are now.
(Sorry Critical Drinker, for this..) That's all I have to say, go away now.
I really appreciate your take. I also felt like I could very much relate on a certain level to Charlie as well, and you nailed it with describing his feelings of helplessness and suffering due to regret of past mistakes. I also related to his struggle with binge eating as a distraction from his deep pain and overwhelming shame.
I battled anorexia for over 8 years, and it took me around 4 or 5 years to develop a healthy relationship with food and my body. An eating disorder is very much like an addiction itself, at least in my experience. Many people believe you can never fully recover from an ED as serious as mine was, but I can say with 100% conviction that I did-only after endless hours of therapy and the incredibly extensive involvement and support of my future husband.
My dad is a severe alcoholic, my mom smokes a pack and a half a day, my cousin died in my home of a heroin overdose, and my aunt died from an overdose of a cocktail of drugs. A pattern I’ve noticed within myself and by observing loved ones who have succumbed to addiction is that we/they were all facing/had recently faced a tragic event that caused the kind of grief that traumatizes you-grief that paralyzes you with despair initially, and then follows you in some capacity for the rest of your life, no matter how much time passes, no matter how much therapy you receive, and no matter what ways you manage to find comfort.
This film-in addition to possibly being the most heartbreaking film I’ve ever seen-is such a raw and profound demonstration of the power grief has and how impossible it can feel to move on and resume your life. I defeated anorexia, but I still carry the grief that caused it. And now that I’ve grown older, I’ve experienced things that have caused me grief so much deeper and darker than I ever could have imagined. I’ve certainly sought out things that relieve my pain temporarily (a quality which itself can make something addictive) and are definitely not advisable to toy with. Lately, I feel I can better comprehend why all the different kinds of addictions happen to SO MANY people, and why it can be so horribly hard to quit.
WOW! So glad I watched this - thanks to you... It's not an easy watch, but boy, what an emotional ride 😢As you've said, it just goes to show what real talent is... I think all the actors were great in this film and it's great to see that Frasier got the recognition that he so much deserves.
He's wonderful. Always liked his movies, even the kinda schlocky ones 😊 he fully deserved that Oscar ❤
