The reason we Colombians have a military post on Malpelo is first of all, it is Colombian territory but more recently we have Chinese fishing trawlers in our waters decimating the shark population. Best of luck on your journey.

Scuba Diving in Malpelo is amazing!! Comercial fishing boats are expelled constantly, that’s why the military base is needed.

Possibly one of your best episodes (I've seen them all). Your dialogue about harvesting the fish with your tiny tots was a bit odd at first, and then I got it. My wife actually said...."Canadians Rock!". A lot of honesty and shy on the BS.

Almost went there with my uncle. He took me and my cousin on a military boat when we were 8-9 to the pacific, we were scheduled to go to malpelo but plans changed. Wish I had seen it...
FYI due to problems with other countries trying to take over territory, colombia maintains a permanent little outpost on every little island they own. This happens in the caribbean side as well.

Theres also the illegal over fishing fleets from the other side of the Pacific .. that need monitoring. 👍🏼🧙🏻‍♂️🇬🇧
Many miles out into the Adlantic Britain holds soverenty over a small rocky peak called Rockwall ... but its impossible to inhabit it, just it extends the economic territorial zone by the extra 200 miles radius. 🧙🏻‍♂️

9:04 its good you switched over to smaller hooks for the Eccosystem too. Alot of people dont understand that you actually want the smaller fish, the big ones are the ones spawning eggs after all... not to mention if you fish out the larger ones you are killing the ones with the genes to grow large.

I wouldn't mind seeing another episode about your fishing gear. In fact I'd like that very much if you include things like how you secure the handlines. I was a bit confused today about how it appeared you caught the tuna on a hand line, then reeled it in using rod&reel. how does that happen???
