Crazy how Ft. Sherman has been overgrown like that. I was there while serving in the Marines for about 6 weeks. I helped teach jungle warfare classes jointly with the Army, while on alert as the Air Contingency Battalion for the 1st Mar Div. We lived in those same barracks while I was there. How things have changed since 1988.
Very cool! I have now been through the canal 5 times. Twice helping others and 3 times on our own boat, a K Peterson 44 cutter. It was right when the canal was being turned over to Panama. Once admeasured, (about $350, we could transit for $90! So went E to W, W to E and and then back over to the Pacific to stay. Loved cruising Panama, both sides. We were going to stay there for 2 wks, but spent 2 yrs. Great cruising and Scuba (our other passion). We ran charters in the San Blas for a very lucrative season. Then the Las Pearlas. We didn’t have UA-cam to make money with. So took people on 1-2 wk charters, sailing and diving. Usually 2-3 months of chartering paid for the rest of the year! Have followed you guys from the beginning. Great documentation. THANK YOU. And bless your wonderful family.
Woops, I accidentally deleted my comment from this morning while I was cleaning up my UA-cam history. Sorry. Thanks to everyone who voted to keep Ben's voice-overs. 👍
Incredible!! it's such a massive experience. Hard to imagine all those workers doing this complicated work every day. takes so much discipline and focus. Happy trails on the Pacific guys!
Yeah, the Pilot was really cool and sure helped running all the lines. I wonder if they have different pilots for different ships in the canal? I would think there's a different skillset for sail boats and container ships. The traffic control is amazing as well. Hard working folks. ❤
Yes in the 1920s Oxy-acetylene welding,in the UK so I am sure it was around in America They were two gases from tall tanks piped to what they call a torch with a welding rod that was for different types and depths of metal. Also you had to make sure you switched the knobs to get the right blue center white flame for the heat. I used to weld that way also could be used under water if an expert for that jobs.
Such a wonderful video! I would love to go through the Panama canal, how exciting! Great to have the 2 friends and your mom onboard as well. I have been looking for a new video, so glad all is well and you went safely through the Panama canal! ❤
I suspect that the lock doors are riveted because they're made of black iron. I have read that it lasts a long time. It can't be welded. Old ships were riveted also.
Absolutely wonderful share of your second crossing. This is on my bucket list!!!! Ya'll always give the best show and narrative of your experiences. Go Well into the gorgeous Pacific. ⛵
A fascinating video and did not realise you were able to do your own line handling. I had heard there were issues with water levels in Lake Gatun to serve the needs of the canal so great you could get through. My only comment is that I was truly surprised you were not wearing gloves as having somebody suffer a rope burn would be bad news. Here's to the next set of videos from the Pacific. Enjoy!!!
I live in the Niagara region in ontario, my uncle and aunt lived in Peterborough and he used to take me on the Peterborough lift lock cruise - I have a 13 yo son and this video got me thinking I should take him on the lift lock cruise, i'm sure he would absolutely love it!
I was stationed in Panama with the U.S. Military during the 1980’s, which was the Panama Canal transition from the U.S. to Panama control. The U.S. military left Panama in 1999. This was the year Panama took full control of the canal.
I had an older cousin stationed in Panama in the 80s. I need to see if he may have been stationed their. Panama canal videos amazes me, the engineering behind it. Thanks for a great video
I really enjoyed this video. I've watched several other crossings but they always went through at night. This was much better and especially when you were through and in the Pacific.
Hi guys my name is Martin and I have been following you since Covid , I was never able to give a like or comment due to limited internet access and wi-fi. I am able to verify that without your contribution to my sanity I would be a mess today. Thank you for every video you have made and posted, it is what made things bearable, I am forever grateful to you, thank you 🙏
The battery entrance at 4:08 looks a lot like the WW1 battery at Ft Totten that I explored when I lived there as a teenager. Similarly overgrown, but built from almost the same plans.
So cool to see all the details of a Panama Canal crossing! Wauw! Been wondering gor a while, whats up with the German flag? Is your boat registered there? Safe sailing! ⛵️
Not many kids in the world will ever get the chance to experience what you’re allowing your little ones too, I applaud you for giving them the chance to have such a great adventure. What they’re getting won’t be available for much longer, hell, I got a visit from the police when someone complained about me climbing trees with my son when he was 5 😢 Your kids will one day thank you for allowing them to experience growing up this way.
@@maggierayner9408 Which is not what is going on here. This is a great example of balancing risk and reward. We have risks no matter where we live. Great parenting exposes children to as much of life as you can, while you can. I now question traditional schooling v homeschooling since you can provide awesome education whiles howing your kids what they are learning. The dangers in schools are truly greater than ever, as an example.
That was very cool! I would have loved to be on board to do this! Whenever I get a chance to hop on a boat, I'm the first to jump in to throw fenders and lines and make sure everything goes smoothly! Just love this stuff! 👌👍♥️🇨🇦
There are other options not mentioned. Also expensive, but options. You can have your yacht transported as cargo on a large ship or you can be trucked.
US Army Jungle Warfare course in 1985. A platoon from Victoria attached to a battalion from the US 82nd Airborne division. Ft Sherman was an interesting place back then.
Here ya go kids 😂 I joke with my kids too. I thought that was sweet, the kids cheersing with their cups too. Glad you guys made it. I'm sure the extra crew had an awesome time too..
A cascading south american design is just like the old water management at their farms. In the manner of concentric circles where updraft keeps the water year round
Historically the term "battery" referred to a cluster of cannon in action as a group, either in a temporary field position during a battle or at the siege of a fortress or a city. Such batteries could be a mixture of cannon, howitzer, or mortar types.
Hello there from Campbell River, I really love your videos, one question, the catamaran has a TRANSPONDER, I have been trying to locate NAHOA, not been able to do it, safe sail across the Pacific.
Great video curious did you consider using the Strait of Magellan? Or would that route have taken you too far south and the Pacific? Versus all the fees of the Panama Canal.
Hello nehoa crew Ben I have a question how do you get ahold of starlink for the portable Wi-Fi when you're sailing on the first or second of June I want to order a starlink but I cannot get in contact with them I've tried everything the other day to find out about a portable system like that and I cannot find out nothing can you give me some info on that?

It was an unbelievable experience, really! Ben and Ashley were amazing hosts!

So cool guys! Great adventure. ⛵🌅
I’m retired Marine and I was doing jungle survival courses at Fort Sherman Panama 1981 and I was living in those barracks
What skills did you learn in jungle survival. Sounds heavy duty...
US Army Jungle Warfare course in 1985. A platoon from Victoria attached to a battalion from the US 82nd Airborne division. Ft Sherman was an interesting place back then.
You were looking at the trail through the barracks. That is from vampire bats. Their poop is more yucky liquid than pelleted like other bars.
Oh cool. Thanks! Reading about it.... Their food source is the blood of other animals, a dietary trait called hematophagy...
My Grandfather was stationed in Panama during WW1 Thanks for a snapshot of the area he was in.
What happened to the Mono overnight, 2nd leg? Addition of old footage was interesting, not seen before, seemed more military focussed vs civil
Now I see where Ashley gets her beauty from, Ashley’s mom Kim is a beautiful woman. 😉
ONTARIO PROUD 😊
I would love it if, on your second time round, you would visit Busselton Western Australia. It would be great to meet you.
Assuming vids are behind, are ya linin' up to visit Canada's east coast this summer?
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is also hot riveted. 1932.😊
Here ya go kids 😂 I joke with my kids too. I thought that was sweet, the kids cheersing with their cups too. Glad you guys made it. I'm sure the extra crew had an awesome time too..
Welcome to Panamá...
Would you do a south Australia passage rather than north
Missed you guys!
Awesome, just Awesome

I love traveling with you, thank you!❤
Here we go again.WOO HOOOO...
I hope that package was road freight. Those soda stream gas bottles are a no no air freight.
Good luck guys
Lol the abandoned barracks.. it looks like a murder scene 😮🥴
