This is by far the best alcohol stove design. I made one out of aluminum but only put holes on one side so I can turn it out of the wind. Good video man👍
Just found out about the Caldera cone the day before yesterday and thought I'd have to check out the hardware store for different flashings to see whats available. Haven't seen any titanium flashing around, was also thinking of making a 6' × 2.25" roll up chimney for my tent stove maybe pickup a 12" ×12" course stainless mesh for a cap/ash catcher. Definately not cheap but should last a lifetime. Funny this vid turned up just now!!!
Hope you don't mind a suggestion. Printers can sometimes print images a bit smaller than anticipated, if shrink to fit is selected. If you draw a scale on your templates (like on a map). People can check their printer is printing it the right size by comparing the scale with a ruler. Hope useful. A fellow alcohol stove enthusiast.
Wooow!!! Muy buena idea!!! 👍 Gracias por compartir tus ideas, no hablo inglés, pero sin duda una imagen dice mas que mil palabras. Saludos de México!!!
Nice Job Jaxx. I've purchased three of these in various sizes from Trail Designs and finally decided to try and make a shorter version for my Foster's beer can pot because they don't offer one. I bought the tall one and just couldn't bring myself to cut it down (call me chicken). Anyway...that is a nice project for a rainy day. Good job on the vid...
Great video Jaxx, I’ve got a similar design using some aluminum flashing from a house project I had left over. I like your crimping idea might need to try that right now I keep mine together with a metal bobby pin and it does the trick!
I'm gonna try it with some flashing today to see how it turns out. I want to try and make one with a fosters pot, where it's sitting all the way down in it like it's supposed to.
I would tape the pattern down and I would set it close to the edge so you don't waste as much material. I will give it a try with flashing first since I have some already. Thanks.
Hey buddy I love all your stuff you do but bro I gotta say. Just choke down the 35 bucks an get the original. I got mine for the Toaks 750 and wont leave home without. Great small cottage company. Made by one of US. God Bless. Appreciate all ya do. DOOO IT!!!
Thanks for the vid man! I'm packing the non ribbed Toak cup without a lid so it looks like the modified version is where I'm headin. Do you have a link to that heating element deal thingy? I'm looking to move away from my BRS and canister unit. ✊
I put links in the description for all the material plus how much of it you will need. Thanks for having a look. I'm hearing that people have done these from aluminum flashing as well. It might be worth a shot to try a prototype with aluminum before breaking off the money for titanium.
Oh man, the pressure is on now, I know you can make this 10 times better. I'm not being facetious either, let me know how to make this better. I'm serious!
Trying my hand again at alcohol stoves. Wanting to do some dry baking. I take it the purpose of the caldera cone is basically a fancy wind screen/pot stand? I’m using a fancy feast stove with a diy simmer ring. What determines the height of the cone?
Yes that is it's function and also it doesn't show it in this video because my pot is small, this is more of a mini version. On bigger pots, they are actually supposed to nest all the way down into the cone so it's heating the entire pot and not just the bottom. The height of the cone varies, you have to take into account a few factors. The height of your stove! Then add 1 inch of space between the stove and the bottom of the pot. Then add in the height of the pot. Then you have to add in the diameter of the pot. Find a center point above.. then draw your cone out. I could show you better than I could tell you. This is a not so good quality video on UA-cam but you should get the gist of it.. ua-cam.com/video/VerP7-aiEBw/v-deo.html
Hey Ken, from what I understand he doesn't make them but a couple of times a year. I would shoot them an email and ask when he plans on doing another run.
Thanks ... I was going to ask how you rolled the bead, but sounds like you bought the mug with the bead already rolled. I thought maybe you had a cheap way (other than buy a bead roller) to form the bead. Oh well, just wishful thinking on my part. Thanks for another great video!
Sometimes that's just easier. Thanks watching! I might mention, I don't have a kitted out work shop. I have very basic tools but yeah, you can buy it. I still love this stove though!
@@JaxxDrinkwaterCurrently I use a Soto Windmaster Stove with a TOAKS 550ml pot and 100g fuel canister. The whole kit weighs 12.6 oz. I saw a UA-cam video about six weeks ago where they were talking about alcohol stoves and it piqued my curiosity and I've been researching to try and understand how they work and I was trying to understand the various options like alcohol, gel, tablets and the options to pair them with windscreens and pot holders. There are so many stoves it gets kind of confusing as to which is the best kind to choose. So far I kind of like the Kojin stove. I eliminated tablets like the Esbit because of the smell I keep hearing about. Anyway, it's been kind of a fun learning curve and I'd kind of like to try one for fun. I only need to boil about 8-10 ounces of water to rehydrate my meals, then after I eat I like to boil more water for coffee to savor without it getting cold while I eat. I normally hike at high altitude, around 10,000 feet and oftentimes with a fair amount of wind, so all that needs to be factored in to which alcohol stove kit would work best in those conditions.
Hey Russ, I purchased the titanium from dutchwaregear. dutchwaregear.com/product/titanium-sheet/ However, if you are interested I'm sure I could hook you up for free :) that would entail us hooking up for a camping trip and me cooking you up a dry baked pizza on a Caldera Cone though:).
1:48 Good god man, i wish i could afford to waste my titanium sheet like that. Using 2 cones' worth of sheeting to plot that one out would get you fired in most places.
You might try using a different stove that doesn't burn as hot, like the starlight stove or just get a hold of some titanium. Aluminum has a melting point of something like 1200°F and titanium over 3000°F.
Roger that and agreed. However, this video is about making a DIY Caldera Cone not about all the other stoves that you or I have or that are better. There are some great creators out there, I'm sure, that are comparing boiling times among the 5011 stoves out there in the world. Thanks for watching and have a great one!

That is about one minute longer to boil than my diy fancy feast that was outside with no windshield. I used a 24oz stainless Stanley cup or pot with 2 cups of water.
Awesome, whatever works for you. Ooo, I got that 550 from Zelph! Great pot. I had a second one with no cone, so this vid is perfect!

Which template is for the regular 550 pot, the one without the roll. Is it template 1 or 2?
1 and 2 ... you tape the two together to make the whole template.
