I had terrible depression and anxiety in the 90s. They barely recognized anxiety and depression back then. I missed a lot of school and I was threatened with being put in a foster home, away from my parents. My dad was an attorney so that was even added pressure. I'd lost a lot of ppl in my life, and to add salt to the wound our basketball team captain died in a car wreck. That was REALLY hard and what made me break down and quit school. Nobody wanted to help me recover and instead the school wanted me to take extra classes because my attendance wouldn't allow me to graduate (I had passing grades). When I did go to school, the teachers were mean to me and took it personal that I missed their class. One teacher kicked me out after taking her exam. She was so offended that I'd missed so much school, she had me removed immediately after the exam and I had no clue what was happening until the guidance counselor told me I was going to another class by force
It's no wonder kids don't want to go to school. The more school you miss, the harder it is to go back. They don't welcome you back with open arms, instead they judge you as this incompetent juvenile that just wants to sleep in

I've got a student who's been absent 15 times so far and he's not in school now for a trip to Georgia. And he plans to miss school around spring break for a cruise. But then the mom freaks out when he fails a test. It's really frustrating.

All it takes is for one kid to say something incorrectly for the state to move in and take the children away, mainly because each child is a massive payout from the state for them to add to their own budget.

When I was in Middle School, my grandfather fell gravely ill. My Mom, a widow and an only child of her parents, took us on many trips that year to visit grandpa in the hospital in another state. We took our books with us in the car, and did our work. At the end of the year, our principal spoke with my Mom. He said, "Your daughter has missed so many days this year that the law requires me to fail her; however, she has done more work AND kept a higher grade than any other student in the Middle School, so I'm not going to do that." Truancy laws are unwise. Doing work and learning have nothing to do with sitting in a certain room all year. It's one of the many reasons that, as a parent, I have chosen to homeschool.

When my toddler started school in 2022/23 he had 13 infections within 3 months. I had to take him to doctor’s office every single time to get a note. The doctor recommended rest/hydration/time for recovery each time. No medication. This was waste of time and resources. There needs to be a middle ground. I grew up getting sick all the time. I could be with someone for 5 minutes and catch what they had, and ten times worse. Looking back on it, there were early signs of a future autoimmune disease, but we didn't know it at the time. I missed school constantly because parents would send their kids to school sick and I'd catch it. Of course when I was little, my mom would take me to the doctor every time for safe measure, but I certainly can't afford to do that now. Most of the time the answer was rest and to stay home from school and not infect others. In middle school and high school, the attendance office tried to crack down on me hard. I had straight A's and never once got in trouble for anything disruptive, and tried to attend school as much as I possibly could since I did enjoy it, but my attendance was still a problem for them. One year we had a two school shooting threats, and so I didn't come, and they decided to count it against me as unexcused. It's insane. I'm glad I'm gone.

NBC really misrepresented the real issues of truancy in the US education system with this story, and it really is a shame. The vast majority of school districts are understanding of students, like this kid, who may have an actual health condition preventing them from attending school. Educators are tired of kids simply staying home or wandering the streets in the middle of the school day because parents don’t want to parent. I’m sorry…but it’s the truth. Even if you are a single parent working two jobs, it is STILL your responsibility to make sure your child gets an education. Are we really going to just allow kids to remain absent from school because “they are poor”? If anything, these children are the ones that we need to make sure attend school so they have a chance at a better life. I think jail is extreme, but courts should start ordering parents to send their kids to school.

Teachers are blamed for students being absent from their classes ("why were so many students absent? what weren't you doing to MAKE them WANT to come to class?") And this is why there is a teacher shortage, because no one is holding students accountable or responsible for anything. .. Now covid again ....another 5 days. What do you want us to do? Send kids in sick and contagious to spread the germs? To possibly pass covid or the flu to another child who might live with a vulnerable grandparent?? It's a f...ing germ swap in these schools nowadays. And it isn't like years ago, now society has lab created illnesses - such as covid- which are much different than naturally occurring pathogens. Former Teacher/administrator/single parent here...all person's who in care of children are mandated reporters meaning we are required by law to make reports of suspicion of abuse. We don't
Investigate but report. Educational neglect is a real problem in America creating a larger lower class and does not creating a competent, competitive society. Before that report is put in, an entire process happens first. First phone calls, attempts at home visits, etc. People get ill but communicate that if it happens because schools don't know. Then, the report is made only after all attempts at contact and resolution are exhausted. DCS then investigates. If they were fined or charged then DCS found reasonable cause to pursue charges, especially if they were convicted and fined. It's not an attack on the poor. it's ensuring that your child has a fighting chance at an ever evolving economy/society. There are only so many fast food and retail jobs, and those require some form of education. I know it's not pleasant to experience it but as a former classroom teacher, it is also very painful to see a child's education not being taken seriously, leaving them in a repeated pattern of poverty.

I think this is a good thing. Parents should be held responsible for their kids actions. Just like when they're praised when their child does something good.
As long as the parent(s) keeps in good communication with the school regarding the absences they will have. Then no actions should be taken to the parent(s).
Example, a long illness or injury. If the parent submits a doctor's, excuse from school letter, and the parent and teacher setup a system to get lesson plans so the child doesn't fall too far behind, the parent shouldn't be punished for it.
The same goes if the child needs a short leave to attend or deal with a personal issue. As long as there's communication between the school and patient(s) and doesn't become a recurring theme, then no action should be taken.
In the end, parents are responsible for their child's safety and well-being and if they can't handle that, then they should be, at least, grown-up enough to ask for help. Because doing nothing or pretending that nothing is wrong, will only make things more difficult and harder to fix.

The one day she wasn’t sick was because there were threats made towards local schools. They say you need a doctors note for every day missed to excuse it. Fine but for every fever, every sniffle I have to keep her home. The dr isn’t going to make that cold go away by magic. I have to pay then for medication, co pays and as a visually impaired parent, transportation. Dr bills are a hardship sometimes. If she’s sick enough to need the dr I will spare no expense but for a mild fever and a sore throat I can treat at home I’ll pass on the dr. We will be in school every day she is well. If you want a drs note for everyday missed find a way to help families cover that expense.

The USA treats schools as factories to pump out workers. Schools are not places of education, they are places of manufacturing cogs for the machine. We need more schools, more teachers, and SMALLER CLASS SIZES. 1 teacher teaching 40+ kids is such a disservice to the students because there just isnt enough time for students to get quality 1 on 1 help when they need it. It is harder to maintain discipline with that many students. Another big issue is that school administrators are not supporting teachers, they do not want any punishment for behavior because when a student is out of school they lose money. Education needs to stop being seen as a business, it is a service, an essential service for the betterment of society. As for the homeschooling issue, both parents have to work these days. Long gone are the days of a working father and stay at home mother. A simple clerk job in retail used to pay for a car, a home, kids, and medical. You can thank corporate greed for the sellout of the citizens of the USA.

Must put Focus on parents to take responsibility for what they have created And be parents, Stoo making excuses and being proud of the fact you are a single parent knowing that this puts your child at a disadvantage ,Your choice you must be held accountable. Don't look to the government or schools to provide for and raise your children.

Just another reason why the education system is broken. If you don’t want kids to be absent, then don’t bore them out to death with sales pitches in class along with letting bullies run amok.

@@laskey2175Right! I wonder if they let them know that he was sick so often and in the hospital. I had a friend who had to have several surgeries one year in high school and he was excused for all of them. A teacher and his mom brought him his school work and he had it completed the next day.

So if your kid just gets out of school and you don't know about it then you're in trouble? What if you dropped them off and they just skip class?? How is this helping the kids??? And does the missed time affect grades at all or are you just mad kids arent all inside the same cinder block building?

So what, it's not like you actually LEARN anything in school.
You just memorize random facts for a test and then never think about it for the rest of your life.

This is a much bigger problem than kids just not going to school, most of the kids ive known in my life have absolutely no hope for the future, im talking kids under the age of 12 even. I've heard 7-10 year olds who are ALREADY s*i*idal.
Whats the point in education, if that education isn't going to help them achieve anything? If the future of this country is so uncertain even the children are feeling the anxiety?
But yes, throw their support systems into prison because your system is falling apart.
I mean its absolutely disgusting that most of these kids reaching high school cant even RETAIN INFORMATION! Because theyre not being taught phonics, they barely can read in the first place, so how can they be taught AT ALL. The answer is theyre being taught how to pass a standardized test and thats it, and they know it. The problem isn't the symptoms (absenteeism, etc), maybe look at the causes? (Overworked parents, Lack of community support, rising inflation, barely liveable prices, uncertain futures, absolutely no control over their lives)
Its only going to get worse. It's only going to lead to more escaoe in our children, which will sadly include more d*ug use, s*i**de rate increase and crime. Its a horrible, cycle of a problem.

I personally don't like being around more than 10 people at a time because during a certain incident in 2001 the school I was attending at the time decided to bar all parents from picking up their kids and essentially held them hostage in a toi small gym where sardines in a can had more room.

If a 10 year old is missing school it's the parents fault and they should be held accountable, but if a 15 year old is missing school there is only so much that can be done at that point.
