Walter gives this song a whole new character. Now that I'm hearing this it does kind of sound like a Walter song. I wish that tenor player stuck to the melody a little more. Oh well. Great sound/video quality!
Essa pra mim é a melhor de todas principalmente porque foi o Jeff Porcaro que gravou a Bateria !!! Walter Becker, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, Miles Porcaro e Carlos Vega no meu coração !!! 🇧🇷
Will be thinking of Walter tonight at the Steely Dan gig in Birmingham UK ..hope is looking down on us from on high ..in the Custerdome ..🥰until next time
Walter on lead vocals? Sometimes he used to do vocals for a track from one of his solo albums, but this seems unusual. Donald really seems to be enjoying having a break from singing duties!
The custerdome is a fictional building basically representing big business or corporations I believe and if you are high in it, you're on the inner circle.i think idk
I don’t understand the word Custerdome but I speculate that it means the shark biting ahole music execs in their ivory towers, the Custerdome. Custer because it represents being slaughtered by those execs. Like going into the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Legend has it, "Custerdome" is Warner Bros. The rumor is that they wanted to sign Donald Fagen without Walter Becker. Some interpret the song as a sort of cryptic tribute to Walter after Donald Fagen signed his solo deal with WB. One theory is that Walter's the "Gaucho" that was not good enough for WB aka "the Custerdome".
Listen to "Long as you know you're living yours" from Keith Jarrett (1974) and you'll understand why he sued SD. Regardless, Gaucho is still an awesome song.
like it - who is this band? They're "High in the Custard Dome"! I wonder wot good will come of any of this. Or anything else. Nothing. Shame - so much promise Such sorry & pain.
I totally disagree. REALLY wasn't feeling it when I watched this. However, when I saw SD at The Gorge in the summer of '03, Walter sang the lead on " Haitian Divorce " and I thought he totally pulled it off. I remember sitting there watching him and thinking, " Wow. This is a nice surprise!! " .
I love Steely Dan so much and Gaucho is my favourite S.D. album, but sorry folks, this is truly a horrific version of Gaucho. It's why I won't go to a Steely Dan live concert. I know I would come away disappointed. But I can tell you one thing. When I saw Dutch band 'Lo van Gorp' (S.D. tribute band) here on youtube, I was absolutely blown away. They do it even better than S.D. The sound, the harmonies...it sounds just like the original recording. I dont know how they do it. And their Hey Nineteen is just like the original. Still miss Walt though.
@@carolynstewart8465 ...Just realized that Walt was singing the lead which takes it further away from the original studio masterpiece sound with it's excellent harmonies during the choruses. And as time goes on, Fagen is struggling more and more with the high notes, often talking the words rather than singing them as a way out. Which is why he handed over the vocals to Walt. The big bands and our rock icons from their golden heydays must accept critisism when they choose to recreate those great tracks from the past with fading voices and underpar performances, that don't sound like the original studio recordings...something that Fagen was, as being a fastidious perfectionist. Gaucho was a career peak for me, after the brilliant Royal Scam followed by Aja. And after Fagen's brilliant solo project The Nightfly, there really wasn't anything else to enjoy by him except a couple of tracks on Kamikariad....'Tomorrows Girls' and 'On the Dunes.' But I still say that Dutch band Lo Van Corp sound just like the original studio Steely Dan when they played Live (Hey Nineteen and Gaucho). We must accept that most of the great musicians have left the musical zone....like McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison and Elton John. And that we must just relish and enjoy the great tunes that established them.
What a song with special treat of Walter on lead vocal. RIP to Walter and the incredible Jeff Porcaro who played drums on the record.
RIP Walter. God bless you
what a beautiful song ,i love dancing slowly on this song with a sensual girl!! RIP WALTER
Donald Fagen is cracking me up with his movements while playing the piano haha I do wonder why he didn't sing this...
Most of his physicality at the keys- is his deep thank you to the 💯: Ray Charles.
Walter gives this song a whole new character. Now that I'm hearing this it does kind of sound like a Walter song. I wish that tenor player stuck to the melody a little more. Oh well. Great sound/video quality!
I felt the same way about the sax player! Quit noodling and just play the darn riff a couple times at least
The amazingness of the incomparable WB 😢... He will be missed forever
Jeff Porcaro and Walter Becker in my heart !!!😢
I don't know what Donald was on in this performance but I want some... clearly loving it!
best song ever.
So good to see Walter singing. I think he could have done more for the Dan on the studio vocals.
Thank you for your music Walter
Walter taking the lead on this Amazing tune ! Love it !👍🏿✨😉🙏🏻
Paul Odiase I see that he goofed on the last verse, but the ladies saved it. It's interesting to see Walter on lead.
rip walter thanks for all your music. god bless
Walter's vocal is a kind of rough, but it's so good and I'm loving it! RIP Walter.
This such a good song.
I just love and never get tired of listening to Walter and Donald, just the best!
The two best (post WWII) modern american song writers.
Thank you Amigo’s
Walter is the best .
I miss him 💙
Walter gives the song a bitter sardonic edge. Perfect.
Plus, he's singing about himself! Or at least, his former self :)
Bravo Walter ....RIP Brother
I absolutely love Walt's singing miss u lov wish he sing more
uma das músicas mais bonita que eu escutei na minha vida. steely dan é fantástico.
Essa pra mim é a melhor de todas principalmente porque foi o Jeff Porcaro que gravou a Bateria !!! Walter Becker, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, Miles Porcaro e Carlos Vega no meu coração !!! 🇧🇷
My wife and I created a musical dressage freestyle performance with this song: one of my favorites .
Just beautiful.
大変珍しいウォルターのヴォーカルVer.

Donald Fagen having a great time just playing the piano in the shadows.
He never seemed like he always wanted the spotlight. Respect 😊
The late great Walter Becker! musician extraordinaire!
Will be thinking of Walter tonight at the Steely Dan gig in Birmingham UK ..hope is looking down on us from on high ..in the Custerdome ..🥰until next time
Is that Walter Becker on Vocals? Has to be! This is awesome 😎💯!
Awesome. But where is that viixen Carolyn Leonhart?
The Duke and Bird. What a wonderful song it is!
Walter on lead vocals? Sometimes he used to do vocals for a track from one of his solo albums, but this seems unusual. Donald really seems to be enjoying having a break from singing duties!
Missing Walter ... Great musician ..lyricist ..Wit ...genius
All round great guy 💙
I like how the backing vocalists sing with Walter.
Walt Weizkopf is killing it on that sax
The late great Mr Becker on lead vocals. He should have sung more studio tracks. Kudos to the female backing vocalists too on this, excellent.
A long list Frirnd Walter Becker. I li
Ove his vocal since 1973.
I really dig watching the piano
Player....walter is fab....Rip
thats donald on piano!
UseYourNikesBro/ right on...stoner mistake....
:P I love smoking and watching Steely Dan too! It happens haha.
Bless
@@UseYourNikesBro Is it really?
There is a certain beauty about how Walter can destroy a song by singing. I saw him destroy Haitian Divorce twice.
RIP Walter.
Excellent!
Walter's voice make this song more MEXTEX taste, like Ry Cooder's. R.I.P W.B
Walter Becker Forever 🎸🍸😎
Their song are sooooo hard to play and sing. They're not simple little tunes.
Magnifica la voz de nuestro Walter q.e.p.d
Yesssßs! This is the Dan!
this band is tight
To good!
I find sloppy Walter over the tight backing vocals and band sounds really good for some reason
Favorite SD tune but this is painful..
Ty Gleason it'd be fine with DF on vocals.
Jacob H couldn’t agree more
WB should NOT have been allowed to sing this song. Regrettable rendition.
Music is fine...Walter...uhh...but, he looks like he's enjoying himself...he's entitled.
I agree. Favorite song by them. I can only hear Fagen singing this.
Talk ‘bout putting feeling into this watch Donj
RIP - Walter
What does High in the Custerdome mean please?
The custerdome is a fictional building basically representing big business or corporations I believe and if you are high in it, you're on the inner circle.i think idk
Inebriated around the record execs perhaps?
I don’t understand the word Custerdome but I speculate that it means the shark biting ahole music execs in their ivory towers, the Custerdome. Custer because it represents being slaughtered by those execs. Like going into the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
The Dutch group 'A Perfect Combination" does a much better version of Gaucho. It's on You Tube.
What is a custerdome?
IDK but it suits the song's lyrics just fine
Legend has it, "Custerdome" is Warner Bros. The rumor is that they wanted to sign Donald Fagen without Walter Becker. Indeed, it's one of many songs ever been plagiarised
How's the syncopation in the chorus?
Becker wasn't the primary singer for SD. That was Fagen's job. Becker was a damn good guitarist (along w/John Herrington).
Can't forget Larry Carlton!
Walter sings worse than me. And I can't sing.
like it - who is this band? They're "High in the Custard Dome"! I wonder wot good will come of any of this. Or anything else. Nothing. Shame - so much promise Such sorry & pain.
Who is the Gaucho Amigo?
I guess... I guess that must be me.
A friend of Walter's who embarrassed Donald at a party with "heavy rollers" in attendence.
There's a gaucho amigo-- or person suffering one--in us all is I think the point.
Some believe the "Gaucho" to be Walter and the "Custerdome" to be Warner Bros. who signed Donald Fagen as a solo act after this album.
What is a Custerdome please?
Walter can right a tune...singing...better left to someone else...RIP
I wonder why Fagan isn't singing.
I think the piano work is more difficult on this song and needs his full attention perhaps?
Though to match Brecker on sax
Walter singing the lead vocal on this?
Uh, no. NOT a good idea.
Disagree I think it's an incredible version!
Alan Kehle why not look how much fun it is for Donald
I totally disagree. REALLY wasn't feeling it when I watched this. However, when I saw SD at The Gorge in the summer of '03, Walter sang the lead on " Haitian Divorce " and I thought he totally pulled it off. I remember sitting there watching him and thinking, " Wow. This is a nice surprise!! " .
Alan Kehle yeah I guess I am a typical SD guy lol I’m an opinionated smart ass lol but we all love this music
And maybe I'm especially critical because that's probably my all time favorite SD song!! lol
Leite quente

Saw them earlier this year. You're missing out, dude.
Sad
they are great live
Agree the girls were struggling to blend

Sax intro was rubbish.
Don't hold back Jim, tell us what you really think.
He shouldn't sing.
No good this live version ((
Just plain bad.
