  • Let me show you my favorite way to create an authentic looking chippy paint finish on cabinets or furniture. This is the easiest and least expensive way I have found to do a chippy finish that looks like it has aged over time. You only need two products to do this and you probably already have them in your home. So come along with me and let's do a little DIY. Oh and by the way, it is 60 grit sanding sponge that I used to finish this project up.

Very pretty result but I don’t understand how the brush keeps from dragging the vaseline into areas where it’s not wanted.

It seems to stay in place for the most part. But I use a light brush stroke over the vaseline. Not a lot of pressure as I run the brush over that part.

Ok so I thought I’d be adventurous and try this technique on an antique desk. I’d already had two coats of primer on it and MEANT to just try this on one drawer first to see how it turned out. Well, my early onset dementia kicked in apparently and I marked up all the drawers and the whole desk with spots of two colors of paint. I tried this technique on a drawer last night and wiped off the paint today and don’t like it. I’d rather paint the dresser white and distress. Now what do I do about the places I’ve put the other paint on? I put on a brown and mixed another color a little lighter that’s a grayish brown. What do I do now to salvage this project? And yes, I’m a beginner. So mad at myself. Please help!

Good on you for trying something new. But I do understand the frustration of something not turning out how you had hoped.
I not a professional and have only painted a couple of pieces for my own home.
My suggestion for you would be to either try sanding it right back or if sanding doesn’t appeal to you as it can be a big job or use a paint stripper. A good low odour one is the brand Citristrip (that’s probably not the correct spelling). I would try to watch some videos of people using it first. But the instructions on the bottle are pretty clear.
I think watching a lot of other furniture upcycling videos will be of a huge benefit. I watch most of them on mute and at 2x speed. If they do something I’m really interested in then I’ll stop it and start again properly. Doing this makes it faster and easier to find a channel with the style you like and or the process you want to perfect.
I hope this has been of help to you.

Kitchen cabinets would you clear coat it with Poly? Has anyone tried this technique on Kitchen cabinets?

I would definitely give it a couple coats of poly in a kitchen. Or a top coat like Rethunk junk tough top or Dixie belle gatorhide.
I have not done this on my kitchen cabinets but I have had customers that did and it worked well.
