    It also looks like my video was having slight encoding issues for some reason, but whatever.

    They're probably the best reinterpretation of Holmes and Watson in modern media. I didn't care at all for Mikotoba when I started DGS, but now I love him as much as I love our quirky detective friend.

      @@gearcomNPG They don't really change his role, though. Watson was always the voice of reason for Holmes' less than savory qualities, and the gateway for the reader into the mysteries the stories presented.
      Having Mikotoba point out and complement Holmes' logic on the spot would make sense for a more experienced version of Dr. Watson in any media, because contrary to popular belief, Watson wasn't dumb by any stretch of the imagination in the original stories, he just didn't have Holmes' superhuman deduction and awareness. With Holmes steering the deduction and letting Mikotoba fill in the details, it shows how much they understand each other, even after all this time appart.

      If I remember correctly, during the beginning of Return of the great departed soul, when Ryunosuke says that he needs to ask Stronghart to allow him to serve as a lawyer in court again, Herlock says that Stronghart is "not his favorite fellow." Or something like that. It's like the first time Herlock even mentioned Stronghart directly by that point in the games.
      But it makes sense when you think about it. Herlock never really knew Stronghart back then: Herlock was only mainly associated with Mikotoba. Perhaps Herlock met Barok during that time, because he acts very informally with Barok nowadays, as though they were already familiar with each other. But Herlock likely never directly interacted with Stronghart for those 16 years. And why would he? Stronghart was a prosecutor before becoming Chief Justice, and Herlock doesn't actually attend court/trial proceedings until Ryunosuke arrived in town. Everything that Herlock deduced about Stronghart was completely behind the scenes. It's likely that Herlock never even met Stronghart in person until case 5 in Resolve.

    I love this scene so much. It was so hard to play. Not just because the deductions are hard, but because I was *losing my mind!*
    We got to see the legendary pair at work! Sholmes finally not holding back! I was like "why is this deduction so much harder?!?!" as Sholmes led the way and knew every answer.
    Then I get an answer right and TAPDANCING?!?! I had to take a moment to sit there in shock after that first one. I was gonna screen record it, but I genuinely took to long to recover to get the first one in full lol.
    Also maybe this ship isn't everyone's cup of tea but mmmm...the homumiko material in this was through the charts.

    I know people keep saying Holmes was faking it, but... I don't buy it. I just feel as if he's best in his element with someone who can keep up with him from the start. Naruhodo and co. were slower, but I still feel as if that, without them or a similar grounding force like Mikotoba here, Holmes never would have found the truth in more than one of his great deductions.
    Truly, follow his actions in GAA1-2. His anger and frustration at the fact that snakes don't drink milk, or could not climb up the bell rope. Let's not forget to mention the references to the enigma of his memory, such as the fact that Holmes in other media forgets things like the Earth being round because of it making it difficult to remember details from his cases. And let's not forget that he left a time bomb at SEVEN SECONDS LEFT because he got swept up in the fancy of his so-called great deduction.
    In truth, Holmes (yes, Holmes. Not Sholmes) is certainly a genius. But his logical thinking is a mix of abductive and deductive reasoning. He gets swept up in the fancy of getting to the truth that he will often forgo fact-checking in search of a conclusion. He is characterized as a scatter brain, in his design, as well as his behaviors (such as wearing a deerstalker for it being wearable in either direction due to its double brim, as outright stated in escapades. or his bold, somewhat reckless attempt at making himself a redhead so he could keep up with the rent.) and I don't think that you can just take that all away, all his characterization, by saying he was just faking it.
    Holmes is a brilliant mind, but he needs someone to ground him. And no one has quite been able to ground him- relate to him, bounce off of him, WORK with him- as Mikotoba has. Ryuu was able to adapt to Holmes, but Yujin needs no adaptation. He knows Holmes. He knows his methods. And Holmes has no quandaries in sharing the torch with his good friend, Yujin, rather than waiting to pass the torch, as he did with Ryunosuke.

    • @optimaltt6070
      @optimaltt6070 2 роки тому +33

      No, he was definitely faking it; or rather, he was *playing the fool for Naruhodo's benefit* , which would explain his silliness like not knowing snakes don't drink milk or postulating that a device can reverse gravity. He wasn't faking his quirkiness, but he definitely does a good job of hiding how that quirkness could serve him well. Those were all beautifully calculated moves, because they serve a single purpose: they force Naruhodo to OBSERVE, not just see. By putting forward an obviously false theory that puts a particular detail or a set of details in the spotlight, Naruhodo is allowed the fortunate means to see the deduction through from start to finish without needing to do it all himself, which would be difficult if not outright impossible. When Naruhodo gets it right, Sholmes says "INDEED!" or "Quite right!", not because he was pretending to know all along, but because he's glad Naruhodo managed to figure it out, and wants to confirm that Naruhodo is indeed on the right track.
      Sholmes/Holmes has also, time and again, established that he was ahead of the curve, implying he's already several steps ahead. We NEVER see his deductive process when Naruhodo *isn't* around until this exact segment of the game(with Yujin), so it's easy to overlook this.
      Spoilers:
      Look no further than when Sholmes/Holmes began his work as a "temporary waxwork" in the Wax Museum. He knew that Naruhodo's investigation would *ultimately* take him there, because he had already formulated the connection to the Professor with that case. This was long before Naruhodo even KNEW who Enoch Drebber *was*, let alone of his connection to the Professor, or his potential motive.
      and it's no coincidence. Sholmes/Holmes pounced on a dance of deduction the MOMENT it looked like Naruhodo was on the right track. This translates to him waiting for Naruhodo to FINALLY catch up.
      It's all well and good to have a partner to bounce off of, but Sholmes/Holmes' frightening intuition, knowledge and observation is genuinely the real deal, but he's definitely been keeping a lid on it, i.e. faking it. All he needs are stakes that are serious enough, and he turns it on like one does a light.

    • @analysissel
      @analysissel 2 роки тому +7

      @@optimaltt6070 all of your claims are assumptions, and there is nothing *actually* indicating that any of what he did in regards to his deductions were planned. Everything you say implies that Holmes' entire personality is faked. Thrown out the window. And I think that's just absurd. Not just his demeanor, not just his habits, but his reactions, the things he says and does, and everything about how Capcom characterized him. This isn't some big plot twist about who he is, like how Mikotoba was Holmes' "Watson" the whole time. There is nothing from the game *directly* indicating that Holmes' personality was deception the whole time. If the writers truly wanted to make you think that, I feel that they would've illustrated that in a way clearer than Holmes having a fluid Dance of Deduction with Mikotoba. But putting that aside for a moment, there are two more points to make. First, you bring up Holmes' presence at the wax museum. While you attempt to make all his movements and the jobs he takes seem planned, other jobs, such as Evie Vigil coming to him to find her husband, were certainly NOT planned, so we know for a fact that Capcom is not above orchestrating a seemingly-unrelated-but-actually-related Holmes investigation for sheer coincidence. But that's more meta, right? You want actual proof. Go ahead to the moment that Naruhodo shows Holmes Drebber's picture. His face turns white and he immediately directs them to enter the room where they can see what Drebber looks like, showing that he never knew that Drebber was a part of the case until Naruhodo told him as much. But you claimed he merely knew the PROFESSOR was involved, not Drebber, didn't you, so how does one explain that if he wasn't planning ahead? It's simple. There is no way on God's green earth he could have known the professor had ANYTHING to do with the teleportation scheme before the case started. The only link the professor had to the case on the surface was Enoch Drebber (whom we know Sherlock was not aware was involved) and the FTF headed by Courtney Sithe, but for Sherlock to immediately presume a stolen wax figure would be stolen simply because Courtney is involved in a case is absurd. Perhaps you can accuse all my claims of being conjecture, but so are yours. Holmes is not a God of deduction. He is a genius, but no deity, much akin to Barok van Zieks' reputation. However, earlier I mentioned two points, and this whole line with Drebber and the Professor was only one. You say that the only time we see Holmes with a faulty dance of deduction, but that statement is loaded in more ways than one. The only other time we see a dance of deduction AT ALL when Naruhodo is not present is when he does it with Mikotoba, and we only see that because of a perspective change. To claim he's only ever made false deductions when Naruhodo is present is, with all due respect, stupid, because Naruhodo is the protagonist from which we see the view of the games. It's not as if we are to flash back in time and see every case that Holmes solves and how he does it. Speaking of those cases, we already know that Iris is willing to embellish details when she writes cases other than the ones she's publishing out of the trunk with Mikotoba's logs. That's according to her own statements. The reasoning for said embellishments, aside from her identity as a little girl, is most likely due to Holmes eccentricity. Another thing is Holmes' word choice. The way Holmes speaks during his Dance of Deductions actually has nothing to do with Naruhodo, but a thing called Abductive Reasoning. I brought it up in my initial comment, but Abductive Reasoning is intentionally vague at many points for the sole purpose of being swift and coming to conclusions without any preconceived notions weighing you down for the point of freeing oneself from the restrictive mental block that is "common sense." Many joints in Abductive Reasoning's flow are intentionally easy to substitute for something else, such as when he's talking about the milk for the snake, he says, "That was just an example," ignoring the fact that there is no other food in the area, and the fact that the milk is what brought him to that conclusion. That is a facet of Abductive Reasoning. Also, "All he needs are stakes high enough?" What about a TIME BOMB? I brought this up, and the only way you addressed this in your comment was that he implied it was a gravity reversal device. But he still didn't bother to have it disabled until there were 7 seconds left, and he excused that as the cost of being friends with a great detective. How can any of THAT be seen as acting? But maybe he was faking it all. Maybe he did put on a false personality and an appearance of stupidity and clumsiness for an amount of time bordering on a year all so he could make Naruhodo observe. Maybe all that characterization was for nothing.
      Listen, I do think that, to some extent, Holmes was definitely coaching Naruhodo. In GAA1-2, he discovered the earring in Asogi's hand long before anything else happened, and was eager to come to a conclusion that tied Nikomina to Asogi for that very reason. Due to Asogi being Naruhodo's friend, he did, of course, coach and direct Naruhodo at certain intervals where he needed to come to conclusions himself. However, when he does this, it is apparent. He speaks DIRECTLY to Naruhodo and straight up tells him "Get your shit together, it's time to expose the TRUTH behind Asogi's death" (paraphrased, of course) and this is when the song, "Reasoning Battle" plays. I do not think Holmes doesn't want to teach or help Naruhodo. But to imply that everything, all his mistakes, false deductions, and eccentric nature are false because of it is not only a huge leap, but it is damaging and dehumanizing. It puts him, as I said, on the level of a perfect God who can predict everything. And no character should be like that. Those characters are the worst ones you can write.

      @@analysissel I think we got a hint , very strong hint.
      Holmes said with serious intentions that " ... behind this lawyer there is a very great mind. My own."
      Even Van Zieks replied "What are you trying to say?"
      And it was in case 4
      This is a very strong confirmation about Naruhodo being taught by Holmes

      @@analysissel THANK YOU. I hate this concept that Herlock’s character was just fake the whole trilogy. It would kind of ruin him completely for me. He can be both a genius and a scatterbrain at the same time, it’s not impossible. The reason he’s in such good form here is because he has Mikotoba at his side, they complete each other.
