Old gundam, Umineko, Magika Madoka, Ytp Mario, the giant orange cat from Azumanga Diaoh, the OVA Jojo, and other memes were all really popular around that time.

M.U.G.E.N. is simply a perfect marriage between skill and humour, community creations and reverence to classics, insanity and understandability. The flock of falling father figures is one of the best things I've ever seen. From the amazing name, to the reference, to the mechanics, it's just hilarious and absolutely perfect.
I would love to have a real mugen tournament with balanced characters, something like, you present yourself with your character, it gets tested and you can enter the tournament...
That would be really dope to be honest...similarly to how every individual copy of mugen is personalized, every local will have their own personalized version of mugen that gets slowly updated by the comunity with characters they want in that aren't overly broken/cheap!
The excitement and comradery during the tourney is something I miss seeing. I feel like you don't see stuff like this anymore because tourneys/speedrunning events are so commercialized now.
I was just thinking the same thing. Most tournaments now are broadcast around the world and have a ton of standards and they try to be sterile. I miss seeing a bunch of people get together for some good ole speedrunning races, but now they're all sponsored and they all have a big in-person crowd that has to be entertained. It's like everything is an extension of Twitch chat now
It's a consequence of getting bigger, I guess. I just wish this didn't have to die. Even if there was something like a "fun only speedrun event" it'd become directly controversial to go there because they don't have an HR/PR department to constantly hassle them over pronouns and microaggressions. Then participants wouldn't be allowed at AGDQ/SGDQ.
Fun fact about the boiling frog experiment; The frogs only refused to jump out after being lobotomized, much like how Madoka lobotomized kermit with that braindead play.

this is actually a pretty cool idea, just balance the characters out a bit and you not only have one of the most interesting fighting games out there but also one that can incorporate characters from any franchise
