"Riker to Captain Picard - Get out of the holodeck and back to the bridge, pronto!"
Meanwhile Riker's holodeck program has him asking audience random questions, playing with weird toys and telling you if his stories are based.
Shut up Wesley! 😡
What I love about this scene is you really get the sense of how much Gurney, Thufir and Dr. Yueh cared about Paul. These men are all his teachers and really want the best for him.
The whole "we all realize this is a trap, right?" dialogue should have been in the new film.
@@JnEricsonx , I hate the fact that they didn’t put the rest in the new Dune. I understand the timing but it was very disappointing nonetheless 🤔…
Such talented actors can tell you so much about the characters and relationships without a word. These actors really show their love for Paul and I love the fact Paul wonders about more mutations from Spice which rolls into the later part of the film
All of them are a mere few years aways from becoming an FBI Agent, a Starfleet Captain, and an observer in Project Quantum Leap.
Or a frakking cylon
Paul is Daisy's dad in SHIELD
Yes!!!
SpreadingtheMuse oh boy.
In the case of Stewart it would be 6 years, which is a considerable time and not just a mere few years. For McLachlan it would be 7 years.
Paul: "I'm sorry, Gurney."
Gurney: *pulls out blade* "Not sorry enough."
😂😂😂 I love Gurney!
35 Years later and Patrick Stewart looks the same.
Patrick Stewart has been a middle aged bald guy forever
True. That’s kinda one of the few positives of losing your hair
He's learned to play the flute (Star Trek Next Gen) as well as the baliset tho!
not anymore.
Sadly he appears and sounds a lot more frail now although he did have a very long run as a 50-something man.
Kyle Maclachlan looks so good here and his hair!😁
Mind blowing that this was his acting debut. Just like Hamburger Hill was the beginning of Dylan McDermott.
That hair should have its own storyline!
The Dune soundtrack is amazing.
You should watch toto's live play of the desert theme. It sounds even better than the movie honestly. They wrote and composed the entire soundtrack you know.
I know it's a mess but I love this film.
A beautiful trainwreck if ever there was one.
I love this version of the Atreides uniforms over the new ones. The new ones feel just a little too minimalistic, too subdued. I like the bronze/gold patterns and highlights the old uniforms have, it makes them feel more like royalty and those who serve them directly. Perhaps for the rank and file the new uniforms would have been appropriate, but for Leto, Paul and Gurney, a modern version of these would have been a better fit of house royalty in my opinion.
I think if Dune can be summed up in one word it'd be "opulent". Herbert was fascinated with Islamic mysticism and the eastern world in general, and Lynch perfectly visually translated that with his film even if the script wasn't all that great. Villeneuve decided for a very limited colour palette and brutalist architecture, which didn't feel distinct from every other sci-fi epic we've had in the past twenty years and I think that was a huge let down for Herbert's extravagant and exotic vision of the distant future.
I love how that castle looks like the inside of a old time ship.
If only country’s and states did this, so like Nevada sand culture, Colorado snow culture
Gurney: Mood is a thing for cattle and loveplay!
Paul: Why cattle, Gurney? Because they... *moo* ?
*Gurney furiously attacks Paul*
I don't know why but I laughed my ass off reading that.
Well done.
Sir Patrick never ages.
This is true.
I loved South Park's ribbing of the vocalization of thoughts as loud whispers. "Yeeeeeessssss...the spiiiiice melannnnggeeeeeee"
"Mood's a thing for cattle and love play... Not Fighting! And LEGO-TECH!"
I just want to hear The Captain say "Shut up, Alia!"
I love how Gurney has a musical instrument. It tells you subtle but so much about this bad ass warrior also having a hobby
He plays it in a deleted scene. Half of this movie ended up on the cutting room floor.
I love the unifroms
Yeah they nailed the costume work. They actually look military when most sci-fi nowadays don't. I never liked how the military looked in Mass Effect. They looked more like police.
That Dune was like wonderful dish with almost all fine ingredients that they decided to served raw and didn't allow the main chef to do the plating. and the final touches.
Brilliant analogy.
superb analogy there
the set designs in this film are awesome. the rain cascading down the wrought iron window and frame, the room all wood. so much detail.
I like to imagine this is Picard in the holodeck.
Patrick Stewart, back when his Yorkshire accent still slipped out now and again.
"If you'd have fought one whiff below y'r abilities, I'da given yeh a good scah t'remind yeh!"
However good and true the 2020 adaptation is to the novel, David Lynch makes Dune all his own. I mean, the steam-punk aestheticism, the surrealism, peculiar idiosyncrasies, bizarre performances, added things like- the Bene Gesserit being bald, Piter's odd litany, the reverse mohawks of the Harkonnens, the Baron's infected face, etc.
He should have followed the book better
He was so frustrated with the finished project that he wanted absolutely nothing more to do with this franchise.
Man, whoever thought that depicting shields in the form of humanoid bricks was a good idea was tripping. Should've just painted them in the form of invisible aura that shows its outlines only when you hit it.
I´m pretty sure a lot of people involved in this movie were doing a lot of drugs.
Let's not forget CG as we know it didn't exist yet.
Back then most "magic" special effects were done with wires holding up supposedly levitated objects and by literally using a very small brush to paint over the frames on a roll of film. If they thought this was better/easier to do on the computers of the time, I think we can excuse the dubious design choice. Also, would the scene still be as memorable, if the shields would look more "normal"?
Not going to lie I kind of like it. Gives a really surreal look to it. Reminds me of how the energy shields worked in perfect dark on the n64. Except you only saw the shield pop up when you damaged someone and then the shield aura would darken the more damage it took, it wasn't activated full time like in this
I just got... mindblown. After all those years, only now I realized that House Artreides has been infiltrated by... Cylons. No wonder Harkonnens could plot their way in
0:12 Why is Kyle MacLachlan so precious?
This is why I love old movies, the characters often speak with wisdom behind their words.
Well here I am cause the new movie was awesome can’t wait for part 2.
I love the sets in this movie
It’s gonna be odd seeing these clips potentially get millions of views from curious fans if the new movie is a success.
It looks like Netflix tier trash so it'll flop big lol
@@geert574 No it fucking doesn't, but some of you see what you want to see. Mew mew its a black lady, mew the fremen looks middle eastern
Geert Matthys
It’s a movie made by Denis Villeneuve.
I doubt it’ll be anything remotely bad.
@704Midas Ah yes, the old "no good movies have been made in the last decade". It MIGHT still suck, but Denis Villeneuve did a great job with the Blade Runner sequel so there's reason to expect he would succeed again with another atmospheric science fiction franchise. There are still good directors out there, it's not all Disney and schlock
@@michaelhansen2309 Yes it fucking does. Listen to the people responsible for it. They are making the movie with "Diversity" and "inclusion" in mind. Not entertainment/consistent story. It will be a hilarious shit show. When you cast your actors based on checklist you already failed before you started
Its interesting how they did the shield effects
From the Dire Straits MTV video - Money for Nothing, probably
They look like the shields from Perfect Dark 64.
Well, he is dressed as a captain ... or should I say ‘The Captain’
Patrick Stewart in the Dune universe, its impossible to top this.
Minecrafts Alpha Test looked good back in the days.
LOL, my thoughts exactly!
They should make a dune mod for Minecraft
So that's twice Dean Stockwell has worked with a Starship Captain 🤣
RIP Dean Stockwell
did not expect the shield effects to be THAT bad lol
Best version of Dune and still one of the most underrated movies ever.
@@adamherrera2064 So is your taste in movies.
Not anymore lol. But this is a lot of fun in a goofy, campy way.
@@keshav3479 I would agree that that the parts with the Harkonnens is more than a little over the top, as only David Lynch can do. But I think the rest of the movie isn't campy at all. Haven't seen the new movie yet, but will be pleasantly surprised if it is actually better in anything other than special effects. I REALLY don't like the lead actor. But who knows, maybe he is perfect for this role.
@@norwegianblue2017 I've seen the new one twice now! I thought it was a bit flawed the first time I watched it, and a masterpiece the second.
It... has very different vibes to the Lynch version and is very much focused on the spectacle but there's so also just so much detail and intrigue packed into every frame of movie. I missed a lot of it the first time around and thought the plot was a bit rushed and then I rewatched it and began to appreciate a lot of the subtleties.
Overall, I think the new movie is fantastic and probably the best theatrical experience I've ever had.
As for how good Chalamet is, you'll have to see for yourself. I personally liked his performance but people who liked the Lynch version usually feel like he wasn't emoting enough. He does play Paul exactly how I imagined him to in the books, though.
@@norwegianblue2017What did you end up thinking of it? And now Part 2?
Tron-Looking shields...
Yep, this is an 80s movie.
I think Paul touched a nerve with "I'm not in the mood"
Can't believe that this came out nearly 3 Years before Star Trek: The Next Generation. Picard was young.
man, kyle maclachlan was such a good dramatic actor at such a young age. 21? 22 at the time? i don't care if the critics hated this film, i thought it was awe inspiring, and chalamet has big shoes to fill, though i think he's up to it.
Not judging Chalamet by his acting abilities, here. He just does not look the part. In terms of physical appearance, McLachlan strikes a far better "princely figure". He has a certain regal look to him that Chalamet lacks.
I love sir Patrick as much as the next guy but it is obvious he had free reign with his fighting scenes. He fights here just as he does as Picard.
Spoiler alert that is Picard!

Paul: (points a blade at Gurney) Is this what you seek?
I've seen Patrick Stewart and Josh Brolin play Gurney Halleck, but when I read the book I always imagine Pete Postlethwaite.
That actually would have been interesting.
Dated though it may be, I do love these hand-animated fake CG effects - very Tron-esque and it certainly has character (and, ironically, foreshadows the garish polygonal forcefields the Borg would use in early Star Trek TNG, before moving to more realistic, subtler, but duller versions).
Patrick Stewart is a vampire. He looks the same age in all of his movies.
I strongly doubt the new movie will be better than this one but we'll see
Some books just can't be adaptation to the big screen. Its better to just leave it alone.
I wish I had eyebrows that could also be combed into sideburns in an emergency.
I just noticed the rails are the same design as the 2021 production's collar pins for House Atreides.
House Atreides used tablets/IPads many years before they were actually invented in our world...
Damn those shield effects were something else
Dune 2020 has a lot to live up to
3 Years later knocks: Did it?
I got to say. Dean Stockwell kind of looks like Cantiflas in this movie! Lol.
I didn't recognize him, damn.
What the hell. The CGI. Straight out of Tron.
Tron wasn't even CGI fully/. Last Starfighter a year later was one of the real starts.
You young pup!
Gurney man!
Love the graphics
1984 CGI
Timothée Chalamet's a great actor, but it really says something that for this adaptation, they were willing to risk so much on a newcomer. It certainly paid off (to an extent). Anyone that stuck around in the theatres stayed because of Kyle MacLachlan (and Sir Patrick Stewart). He should have been nominated for an Oscar. Very few neophytes could accurately claim that audience members stayed because of their acting.
I very much doubt anyone stuck around for Kyle, he's an average actor at best who would be completely unknown were it not for Twin Peaks.
@@krashd he is awesome in Blue Velvet
The movie Dune, which was so ahead of time that it became a solid foundation of late 20 and early 21st century cultures like the Star Wars, spice girls, and minecraft
Wow Captain Picard had a real fancy uniform before Starfleet
FANTASTIC FILM !
👍😷
35 Years and 9 months later and Patrick Stewart looks the same.
I can’t wait to see how this scene plays out in the new movie next month!
New Dune looks good.....

Paul: I'm sorry, Gurney.
@@virgo14 not sorry enough
So much more compelling than the dead scenes in that new movie.
I really like this film
I still have NO problem with that special effect. None. It holds up like Forbidden Planet. Awesome
:37 oh shit it's Leonid Brezhnev!
I don't care if it was the 80s, those visual effects for the shield are ATROCIOUS. Especially since the original Star Wars trilogy had ended just the prior year. If the technology wasn't there for the shield, then they should done less than more here. Just make the shield transparent. Just a visual flash when turning it on, and insert a few light effects every time there's a hit.
The worms are the spice, the spice are the worms! Like only movie that has thoughts being heard.
McLachlan is so hot
Data: Captain, there seems to me some anomalous readings about the Planet Arrakis' atmosphere, there seems to be a strange substance that turns the native population's eyes blueish in tone, the locals seem to refer to it as the "spice melange".
I can hear Data's voice in my head while reading it.
And it renders warp drive useless.
Shut up Wesley !
Picard: Ok Data, now call Agent Dale Cooper of Starfleet Intelligence.
Data: May i ask sir why?
Picard: Shield Practice Data, shield practice.
Worf: But, Tactical training is my thing. So why no-
Picard: Shut up worf!
Although this movie was generally a TERRIBLE approximation of Frank Herbert's masterpiece novel, this sequence at least was decent and does not offend those of us who hold Herbert's works in high regard.
Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife
Steven Yates Yes, never noticed that before.
A 3rd pattern and a 2nd pattern with a ball pommel?
Oh my god its the captain wow he's so cute when he's young
His back was toward the door. Never mind there were 7 armed guards also with him in the room.
It's foolish to trust that the guards will always be there.
Also foolish to believe that the guards will always be able to stop the first shot, which is the only shot a good assassin would need. The guards would avenge you, yes, but you'd still be dead.
More than seven. At least a dozen, on the ground floor and stationed on a balcony. And anyone notice the weapons the guards were armed with look like plungers??
Paul would know the difference! 🤣
@@avishalom2000lm They're on loan from the Daleks.

You're a prop
Dale Cooper vs Captain Picard, my fan fiction
Patrick Stewart could have reprised his role and no one would be able to tell the difference
A fantastically weird and thought provoking movie. I'm really hoping the remake won't ruin it.
Well if anything were in for gorgeous cinematography since it’s the director of Blade Runner 2049, but I’m hopeful for this film, the books deserve a good adaptation with a worthy film style that captures the books vision. I’m willing to give it a chance, we need a good thought provoking sci-fi film for a new generation, wash the bad taste of Star Wars away.
This movie was dickweed
They've already genderswapped an important character, and current politics might be leaking into the film from what the makers comments on social media say as they project their own beliefs on social commentary to distort what the Books are about.
CommissarKane if it’s anything like Bladerunner 2049 it will be gorgeous, shallow and sterile.
They've Gender swapped the character of Liet Kynes in oder to "update" the story in their eyes. And I don't trust current Hollywood to make an authentic remake as they'll dumb down, rename or remove stuff they find personally controversial like eugenics and the Butlerian Jihad. Plus it looks less like a space opera and more like a typical sci-fi with a mundane default fascist design instead of a more regal aristocratic design that the original media captured.
My man has a shield of eyebrows
Al & Picard
Damn. Who in their right mind would hate on this movie?
This scene in particular is so cheesy. Also, terribly miscast.
@@JC2023HD maybe, maybe not. If we was to go by the “book” canon then yes. Jessica should have been younger blah blah blah. But Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck? Simply exquisite! Sting as Feyd? Exemplary! His Seething anger at the end was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
MAKE IT SO.
0:50 Holy shit I never knew Picard was in Dune.
He was also in Excalibur
For its day, this film was awesome in regard to its cast, costumes, sets and special effects. Yes, David Lynch took liberties with the story in certain areas. But, as I'm finishing the first Dune book, Lynch did a damn good job in applying his own signature to the telling of the story of Dune. I still love the soundtrack to this day and I feel it is one the best ever in modern cinema. Who ever did the casting for this movie needs to come back to Hollywood and help teach the current generation how it's properly done. The industry needs help severely. This version of Dune, I think, will continue to be a cult favorite for years to come.
I have not seen the New Dune.
I don't have to in order to know that it's but a single LED compared to the brightness of this masterpiece.
I love Dune but I always thought those shields looked stupid. Maybe we'll have more form-fitting shields in the new movie.
Actually, I like them better than the form-fitting ones in the SciFi channel miniseries, BECAUSE they look weird. It's like the weirdness relates to the Holtzmann effect they are based on, meaning it is some exploit based on an obscure scientific rule, so it has to produce an odd visual effect to go along with it. Even, though the film wasn't popular when it was released, it was still very memorable, I think mostly due to the set and costume design.
@@matthewdietzen6708 The Holtzmann effect wouldn't produce blocks, it essentially conforms to the shape of the shield-wearer. This was just an example of Lynch and his team overthinking things and going for a wow factor instead of being logical.
@@roshi98 oh, I agree with THAT part for sure, BUT, in terms of the language of film, the blocky shapes better communicated the idea of an ideosyncratic high technology in a universe with selective bans on it. Also, the grotesqueness of the 1984 Harkonnens, even though less accurate than the SciFi series, was more memorable and provided a starker contrast to the urbane Atreides.
Put all the actors of this movie with the visuals of the new one. Add the wierding module idea to the new one and you have the perfect Dune film.
Arrakis is real, the Harkonnens are real.
Arrakis is the middle east, spice is oil, and politicians are harkonnens.
@@dmace81 Sounds accurate enough....especially "politicians are Harkonnens"
@@dmace81 Harkonnen was the Soviet Union/communism, spice is oil only because attached to the paper money/reserve currency of the USA, and Atreides is for the greek Atreus. In the end likely the Great Catholic Monarch, exemplified with "Paul".

Thanos : Mood!? What's mood got to do with it? You fight when necessity arises. NOW FIGHT!!!
