funny about viserys being jealous of drogo. i never looked at it that way. thats actually so tragic.
yeah..what really triggered his ultimate fall into madness at the end was seeing Dany fall in love with Drogo. Viserys always wanted her. in the books, ever since she could remember, Viserys would keep telling her all about the importance for Targs to stay pure-blooded and maintain the line. Illyoris had to use guards to protect Dany from her brother as she grew older because he lusted after her. with the way the relationship was described, i would imagine that he was planning to have killed Drogo the minute he got back the iron throne and married Dany.
basboosa i must have missed that... what book is that mentioned in? kinda sad. ignoring the grossness of incest because thats normal for targs. he probably didnt expect her to adapt to that life so well and so quickly. he probably thought she would bitch and moan about it until they were back in westeros. instead she was like you know what drogo's not so bad . i sensed his jealousy a bit when he confronted jorah while trying to steal the eggs but i didnt think much of it. he says something like i see the way you look at her. but you know he's grown up his whole life thinking he's going to marry her and then marries her to someone else thinking she's gonna hate it and then she's actually kinda cool about it. it makes his death so much sadder when he screams dany is so heartbreaking. i always thought that was just an empty threat and he died for it. he wasnt gonna actually cut the baby out of her. even he's not that crazy

they ARE inbreds. their mother and father were siblings as are most targaryen couples, daenerys grew up thinking she would marry viserys. aegon the conqueror married both his sisters, visenya and rhaenys, as did most people in the family after him. cersei lannister used this excuse to justify her incesting with jaime.

Putting Jon aside for a moment, I think George RR Martin meant it as this: They are the last Targaryens who can extend their bloodline. Aemon swore a vow to never marry or father children, meaning he can't extend the bloodline. Brandon Rivers was lost, forgotten by the people of Westeros besides very few. Even then, he's the Three Eyed Raven, and he probably had to live a life away from other Westerosi and live a life of celibacy, like Aemon. Now, Martin did lie to us, because Jon is no longer in the Night's Watch and is not a supreme being.

At first I thought it was ridiculous that the actor playing Viserys didn't address the cruelty and extreme arrogance and entitlement that his character is, but then I realized that that's what allows him the play the character so damn well. That's what makes him such a great actor for the role.
As they say, it's pivotal an actor doesn't judge their character. Play a person, not a judgement of a person

In the book, right before Drogo kills him, he starts to almost cry saying "that's all i wanted." I like how George RR Martin has the power to at least make you feel a tiny bit sorry for him. Just a little. It makes his characters realistic.

He real eye color is green. Since she is wearing purple, it can reflect in her eyes and make it look more purple. I have green eyes, and sometimes people think it is blue because of lighting.

Notice that Emilia says "I wouldnt know about my heritage...." She actually lives so much into her character, that she would call herself Denerys in real life.

I heard Emilia never truly recovered from GoT for several reasons. She almost died twice of a brain aneurysm between seasons, she put so much of herself into the show since it was her first real acting job, et cetera. She never fully recovered form GoT, but she is thankful for it because she wouldn't be where she is today without having been cast as Daenerys. And i'm sure she's grateful to George Martin for creating the character, too.

Also, it didn't help with his sexual frustration on Daenerys, not to mention the fact he blames her for his mother dying in childbirth. He is a complex character and one of my favourites, his death was heartbreaking
His death was heartbreaking to me as well. He was such a unique character. That's also one of the reasons why I don't like Daenarys. He was still her brother and he didn't deserve to die like that. Its one thing for him to die but its another thing for his own sister to stand there and watch as her husband kills him. This is why I don't think Dany would be a good ruler. She's self centered and doesn't understand family.

harry lloyd did a great job as viserys. both he and ned leave lasting impacts on the series as a whole.
I was sad to see Viserys die. The actor did such a fantastic job of portraying a creepy and abusive, but also desperate and homesick young man. Fascinating character. I mean I hated him, but as a character he was brilliant.
I've always wondered why Viserys never spoke Valerian to Danny since that is their mother tongue.

It probably isn't their mother tongue. Valyria was destroyed years ago, with only the Targaryens and a few other houses actually continuing to learn it. It would be more logical for them to learn both English and Valyrian, and while they might have learned both, Viserys and his father used English more in order to speak with the other houses.
Ashley Prescott yea I thought that too. But I don't remember any dialogue in valyrian from season 1. Which makes me sad.

I loved Viserys so much, miss him.
He was born as a prince of the realm. As so many siblings before him died so soon and only his older brother Rhaegar remained, he was constantly protected. Not even the queen was allowed to stay alone with Viserys. She shielded him from the madness of his father and cherished him.
He was eight the realm rebelled. His brother Rhaegar died on battlefield, his father soon followed with the deaths of Viserys' niece and nephew, his mother Rhaella after birth of Daenaerys. He lost his kin, his home. He was eight. Over the years, his supportes grew more thin, some dying, some leaving him. The prince once cherished was now without allies and was forced to live on the street and beg for food and custody. He told his little sister stories about the home he hoped to see once again.
Was he always destined to become a madman? Was it the circumstances? We will never know. I feel sorry for the boy.
Viserys is viewed as a sadistic monster in the beginning of GOT, but when you learn about his backstory, he is actually a very tragic individual.
He may have been a monster near the end, but Viserys is the only reason Danerys knows anything about Westeros, as well as being the only reason Danerys can speak Valyrian.
Viserys was the father, brother, tutor, and teacher to Danerys. He was the person that was keeping them alive in Essos. The years in exile where he was being used by so called “friends of Targaryen’s”, and having to sell his mother crown for a pittance, broke Viserys into the selfish monster he was in 1st season of GOT.

I find lots of critical praise for Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean, and even Jack Gleeson - and I'm not saying the praise they receive is undeserved, because they definitely deserved it - but I've found Harry Lloyd's multi-dimensional portrayal of a potentially one-dimensional character (that one dimension simply being "controlling psychotic") to be quite underrated. In the last couple episodes he was in, he even got me to care about his character in a sympathetic way. Fantastic job.

MrDexter Daenerys calls Westeros her home because that's all Viserys tells her, that's where they belong. Daenerys was never in Valyria. In the books, Dany was living in a building with a red door i think and she was happy there, but that's in Essos.
i know,she has never been to westeros either(she was actually a baby)in my opinion her place is essos,if i were dany i would cancel the plants to go to westeros and try to rule essos!

Viserys died TOO SOON !! Like it or NOT. I think they should have had a child with Daenerys according to Valyrian/Targaryen laws. At least there would be a HOPE that Targaryens and Magic would not disappear

Honestly, Harry deserves just as much attention as his eaqually fantastic coworkers. He personifies Viserys so well, even if his character was an up-tight asshole n_n
What a great mind Mr. Martin has, what a rich and wonderful story GoT is. I've watched the show from the start to where we are now. A lot of people are complaining they don't stick closer to the story, but if your like me and haven't read all the books yet, your in for a treat, you get to experience it twice and you can see it is based on the story, not the book come to life scene for scene.
It's been 3 years since the series ended, but it's still the greatest and the best 👏❤️

Agreed. Viserys lost his entire family, then lost his mother who died giving birth to his sister, then he was on the run his entire life in an attempt to keep his sister and himself alive all the while raising her despite being a young man himself. Not to mention all the insults he has had to deal with as well (beggar king for example). There is only so much a guy can take before he snaps.

I am almost finished with the first book and am proud season 1 followed it quite closely. Viserys was too arrogant, jealous, and greedy for his own good. When a dynasty practices incestuous marriages the offspring are often screwed up mentally, Viserys a perfect example. Daenerys is the better of the two and like her I have a natural way of dealing with others, but an ability and desire to take control and names measured out by my sensitive side. When someone tries to intimidate or challenge me- I play with fire ;)

Note though that whatever genetic issues they had growing up were also compounded by a traumatic childhood, no matter how "okay" their circumstances might seem at the beginning of Game of Thrones.
So how are the Lannisters better than the Targaeryns? Joffrey was born of incest and he was pretty messed up. Viserys was still her brother. Family if family. Sure he was greedy and arrogant but so is Cersei.

I love that all the way back in 2011 George was lying about Jon Snow.
It's clear from the books and the series that Viserys was bi-polar. Sometimes he flies into a rage at no sign of provocation and sometimes he's directly challenged and he's as calm as the sea. He's a Targaryan born of incest, so madness came easy. Besides, he was raised in his early years to be a king, then suddenly he was pushed to a foreign land having to beg to survive. The knowledge that he was supposed to be a powerful dragon but really he was so utterly powerless did not help his madness.
Virsarius was my favorite character. I was actually quite sad when he died.

The love for family line at the beginning fits Jaime more than anyone else.
If Viserys had married his sister, the blood of the dragon and old Valyria would have lived on and not stopped with those two. And Jon of course. But Jon was brought up by the Starks as a bastard. He didn't even know he was a Targaryen until someone told him.

That's also because it's not spelled out directly, but when you think about it, it's really a driving force behind some of his actions in the show. You see it when Dany begins to wear more Dothraki clothes and braids - He despises that, because she's no longer a Targaryen, she's no longer his. He also starts calling her a slut after she's married to Drogo - which is because he's actually NOT okay with her sleeping with a Dothraki. He sacrificed her to get back home.
