They tried to with contacts but a lot of the actors either experienced a lot of pain, couldn't see or both so they abandoned using contacts. Also Whilst I think this looks good it does seem a bit time consuming.
dude your effects were perfect i wonder why the producers didnt done the same processes you made ? i mean they have much better acess to CGI programs than anyone else and avalible time make it look the more realistic possible so why not doing this ?
That and when you see the CGI specials they released, you realise that there is a scary amount of CGI you don't even notice. This wouldn't of been that much extra
Speaking as a non-book fan, even with the color grading CGI it still looks bad, it's because violet eyes are obviously not natural. In these scenes it's so distracting I couldn't even focus on a storyline I'd seen a million times already.
As a writer I thought GRRM was a genius and the coolest character designer when I read Targaryens=Dragon have purple eyes. That sold it for me as I'm addicted to anything dragon-centered and I write most my character since childhood with purple eyes. My readers see.it as unrealistic but I didn't care. Then as much as I love D&D's GOT, I hated that they didn't include the purple eyes. Yep.. I understand that Emilia was allergic to contacts, was it? But still, Targaryens aren't special just bec. Of dragons.. they have purple eyes!!

I remember reading that Emilia Clarke wore contacts for a few scenes, but that everyone agreed that she looked silly and they just let her have blue eyes. But honestly, I quite like the purple eyes. They suit her character, and make her look a little strange. Daenerys is a other-worldly; she is able to walk out of a pyre not only unburnt but holding a clutch of dragons. So I think the purple eyes would have made sense. But it is definitely jarring the first time you see it, so I can understand why they would not want to risk the future of the show by making a bold aesthetic choice in the first episode.
After seeing how good this looks I'm pissed they didn't do it. It adds so much more character to the Targaryens. It's mesmerizing and captivating. I think the only reason they didn't is because it's too obvious to spot a true Targaryen which brings up a lot of issues with keeping them safe, and hiding Jon Snow, and possibly other Targaryens. They wouldn't have been able to blend in to survive. So I understand why they did it but it would have looked sooo cool. :(
DJDevon3 In the books Jon didn't have purple eyes. House Baratheon descended from the Targareons and they don't have purple eyes in the book. Dorne has some Targareon blood and in the books they dont have purple eyes. The platinum blonde/silvery hair and purple eyes of the Targarians is only for pure blooded Targarians, born through incest to keep the blood line pure. Those famous features had a cost: Madness in the family. Hence King Areys

I would DEFINITELY prefer that her eyes were purple. I was so disappointed that there weren't any of the colorful descriptions from the book depicted on the show at all. I'd definitely appreciate at least photoshopping her eyes purple.
They should've changed the eyes. I think GRRM made the Targaryens have silver hair and purple eyes with the purpose of reminding the readers (and the Westerosis) that the Targaryens are/were not of Westeros, they were and always will be of Valyria. They are recent additions to Westeros and even after 300 years (and especially because of generations of incest) still remain mostly foreign outsiders.

Wait a minute... This doesn't look the least bit tacky or fake. I've read the "tacky-looking" argument against purple eyes before, but you just disproved it. Now I'm massively disappointed in the showrunners. They could have spent less money on, I don't know... Something, at least, and spent it on making eyes purple!

You did an amazing job with this, I wish HBO would see this and fix it before they release all their box sets. This makes such a difference even though it's a small one. It doesn't glow but it still shows us that she's got some sort of power or something different and special about her before her dragons are awoken and before she becomes the Unburnt. dude this is incredible! To the point where I now disagree with the creators for not giving Daenerys purple eyes. If they had you as their editor, it would've worked out epic and looked so realistic.
PLEASE do a video showing one or two edited scenes of each character with their book eye color and hair color! This is so good and you should have been hired on the real set!
Oh well. Maybe if they remake the TV show in 100 - 200 years or so, they will do a REAL adaption of the books (with ALL books released by then). The Targaryen with purple eyes, Khal Drogo NOT raping Daenerys, Mountain being 8 feet tall (genetic engineering ftw :P, TV show Mountain is actually what prime Robert Baratheon is supposed to be built like), Joffrey being a hunk, Catelyn Stark getting resurrected, Arthur Dayne NOT being a dual wielder, various characters not dying (looking at you, Stannis and Barristan), Sansa NOT getting raped, Rhaegar and Elia's son being alive in Essos and Dorne actually existing in the story (Doran Martell is one of the best book characters, fuck D&D for killing him off). And many other things, most notably a plot far better than season 7's. Now, all of us might not witness that remake, unless scientists unlock immortality...

This is so great! Thanks for taking the time to do this. The most striking shot where the purple eyes really enhance it the most I think is 3:43 after she comes out of the pyre with the dragon on her shoulder, and she's looking around. Wonderful job, this is how Dany should have been in the show.
DAMN. You know, I thought it would look stupid or something, like it would detract from the realism and be sort of gimmicky, but seeing it at 1:41 actually really surprised me-- how good it looked. Definitely gives her sort of this transcendent, haunting, mystical presence that I didn't know would work so damn well... This was just ONE guy doing a simple computer trick? It looked so well, even just for that. Sure, I noticed some times where maybe it was a little bit off-putting, but with the budget that Game of Thrones has and the people they have on staff? Shiiiiit, this would be flawless.

It works in darker environments, but in lighter environments like the scene where you first see her the eyes still are very distracting. It's just that the purple really contrasts with almost everything else on screen. I think a less vibrant purple would have worked better, at least for the scenes where her eyes really stand out. But if you hadn't kept that up, there would also be no consistency, so if you kept it consistent the purple colour would not be noticeable at all for darker scenes. Still I loved your attempt at doing this.

Before answering those questions, consider the following. 1. Some people won't notice the color. 2. Some people will find the eye color distracting. 3. Still others will complain that her eyes are not the right shade of purple. So exactly what percentage of the audience would have been happier with purple-eyed Targaryens? 10%? You can't please everyone no matter what you do, so again I ask -- Is it worth the effort for a small percentage of your audience?

I like what you did there. You should also do the same for the show Outlander. It’s currently on STARZ and in its 4th season. The character known as Brianna, played by Sophie Skelton, is supposed to have blue eyes “exactly like her biological father Jamie Fraser.” Instead, they chose an actress who has dark brown eyes. It is a sticking point for their most loyal fanbase, since matching red hair and BLUE eyes were an essential part of the character. Her first introduction is Outlander season 2 last episode, I believe, and she’s also in the following seasons. What irritates me most is that you have actresses like Jenna Coleman willing to wear contacts to be true to the character (in Coleman’s case, Queen Victoria) yet in shows like Game of Thrones and Outlander, where a large part of the fan base is book readers, they can’t or simply don’t bother abiding by specific characteristics that are an important part of WHO the character is! Nice job btw. Perhaps you should reach out to GOT producers, give them a sample of your work and see if they’ll consider giving you the task. Or try with Outlander, Maril Davis with Tall Ship productions and Matt forgothisname are both on Twitter often. Outlander actually lost thousands of viewers over their actress pick for Brianna and refusal of contacts or changes post production.
they didnt do the purple eyes as it would be too fanasy to begin with and it may scare off some viewers who thought they were just watching a medievil show. only magic related thing happens by end of season 1 and then after its a gradual build up to ease the non-fantasy wtchers into this world. if they had begun with flashbacks of mad kings, conquerors with dragons, people with blue beards, purple eyes silver hair etc. they might have lost viewership. im pretty sure hbo axed this. as the purple eyes look great, they shouldve included it and their reasoning was poor. many actors wear lens in shows/films, nearly all who need glasses wear lens so its not that much different, minus the colour.
I don't think that is an explanation for why the magic slowly creeps into the show as that is the point of the books as well. GRR Martin makes a point of having this world almost devoid of magic and westerosi people not really believing in it and then it starts to slowly creep back in. Remember, they showed the White Walkers since the first episode, that was the point. To remind you that the game of thrones is not the actual story, that is a distraction. It's the War of the Dawn that is important.
I think part of the reasoning is that they were trying to draw in a crowd that wasn't necessarily into fantasy, so they turned down some of the magical aspects for the first season. I definitely like the purple eyes, but it looks less realistic no matter how good the effects are

Well done ! The dragon queen looks lovely with the signature Targaryen violet eyes. With the GOT Season 8 still so far away in the future , I hope the entire series gets a makeover and gets those eyes the right colour . We'll watch the whole series all over again :)
ahhhhhh this would have been so much better. making her more unique even, and i think violet eyes look amazing, i mean technology has come a long way since, the green contacts from grinch, which if i remember right, at frist wree painful contacts, but in the end, he coudlnt wear them anymore so cgi did the work. this aproach shown here seems to be a great and relativly low budget aproach, given, that this isn't the cheapest show. ahhhhh really a pity. white hair violet eyes would have been just great!
I'm sure it is a lot of work - but if you find it fun it may be worth a shot. Unfortunately it is supposed to be a large three-pronged beard in the books (with a golden moustache). Tyrion's eyes were also supposed to not match. But in any case - I think what you've already done here is really neat.
It's a cool little experiment but I am sure you noticed that all eye colour changes on any light change which sometimes you got the violet to look perfect, while other times it was a little much. But this was fun and I liked the scenes that looked natural. Thanks for making this
It's something that would be a nice touch, but not particularly important for the show. Like you said, it's great for close up shots but if the camera isnt right in her face you dont really notice it at all. I'd already read that when they tried it with contact that it looked horrible on camera. I'd rather they spend their time doing a much better job with the 3-Eyed Crow look than with eye color (who Blood Raven had better have a red eye)

I don't mind Emilia Clarke's natural eye colour, because it does not really affect the show at all. Given that she is pretty much the last full blooded Targaryen, as long as she looks somewhat distinctive (silver hair), that's enough for me, since she does not have to have familial resemblance to anyone else, which would be strengthened by the purple eyes. However, it was neat to see her with purple eyes-- I appreciate the effort that went into this! :)
Never read the books BUT the purple eyes do give more an effect. Without the eyes it's almost like she's just another blond with snowy white hair, but with the eyes it definitely adds to the Targaryen look.
The emotion reason for no contacts is bullshit. That would mean everyone with contacts IRL doesn't properly shows his emotions -_- , which is, of course, totally false. The only good reason would have been allergies.
Bombur I kinda agree but The contacts are obvious though. The digital method works fine and seems like you could pay someone a thousand bucks to do it for each show. Hardly a stress on the budget. Then again it probably just wasn't a big enough concern with everything else they are juggling. The wigs bother me as well. They look like wigs to me. Especially cerasai with the short one.
I read somewhere the editor of the first episode disliked the Targaryen siblings' purple eyes and said the contacts make them look "alien" and "unhuman". D&D would obviously want people to relate to Daenerys (she is one of this show's poster girls), so the contacts were dropped to give her a more natural appearance.
Not necessarily. Colored contacts make the iris of the eye appear static, and there is a surprising amount of emotion which is conveyed by opening and closing the iris.
Does everyone who wears contacts wear coloured contacts and act as a career? Do people that don't wear contacts not get irritated and affected by wearing something they're not used to wearing on the most sensitive part of the body? Should the crew waste days or even weeks doing nothing just because they have to wait for the actor to get used enough to the contacts that it doesn't affect the performance as much?
I wish they had digitally changed the color of hem, like in The Witcher. Maybe the technology when the show started didn't allow it (to look completely natural).

I really appreciated your artistic suggestion. Furthermore I would really like it the DVD version do this alteration to Daenerys eyes. I really enjoyed the genetic difference. With today's technology it's sad to think the show runners quit after an elementary concept such as contact lenses. With so much CGI or the method you used in your video if it differs, was a viable and satisfactory solution.
It's odd how quickly you get used to it while still noticing it enough to appreciate it even in the later scenes. Then again I suppose that was exactly the point. You did really well.

Great work. You really pinpointed not going over the top, just kinda giving it a natural hue. I really wish it was left in. I think it gives them a slightly more magical/mysterious allure and plays into something about them did set them apart from all the other houses and allow them to coexist with/tame dragons. Totally stinks that they couldn't get them the quality lenses that would be better for sensitive eyes so maybe they could at least wear them some of the time and cgi the rest.
Its low key important that the Targs Have their white hair and purple eyes because that look of otherworldliness and magic is what helped them inspire a sort of divine awe in the people of Westeros.
this is just perfect, and it's not even costly. with all the time we have to wait between seasons I really don't see why they didn't do this themselves, I wouldn't mind waiting an extra day or week for her eyes to have the proper color, it would also add a lot more to her uniqueness! also rip the normal-colored eyebrows from the first season, now they're black lines on her face which does NOT look natural. èné

I would DEFINITELY prefer that her eyes were purple. I was so disappointed that there weren't any of the colorful descriptions from the book depicted on the show at all. I'd definitely appreciate at least photoshopping her eyes purple.
I hope once all the seasons are out, that they will make a blue ray version with these eyes.

They should've changed the eyes. I think GRRM made the Targaryens have silver hair and purple eyes with the purpose of reminding the readers (and the Westerosis) that the Targaryens are/were not of Westeros, they were and always will be of Valyria. They are recent additions to Westeros and even after 300 years (and especially because of generations of incest) still remain mostly foreign outsiders.

I always thought that Emilia Clarke had blue eyes. But then again, green eyes often look blue and vice versa, and which is the true color often leads to debate among people. And Googling the matter, I see that Clarke's eyes have been described as blue-green as well. Anyway, the purple eyes looked great in this video. I always thought I was glad that the show didn't include the purple eyes because purple eyes are unrealistic (despite all the other unrealistic things in the show) and we might not have clung to Daenerys as much. But seeing this, she is just as stunning with purple eyes, if not more so, and the eye effect in this video looks natural enough. Also, after seeing this, I'm thinking that the show should edit all of the Targaryen scenes to have purple eyes instead and release it as a special version of the series.

It looks great. I always wondered why the show didn't do something like this instead of contacts. Makes her look for exotic, regal, and beautiful. It's not distracting, and it makes her character look complete.
Damn, one UA-camr with some editing software just made Dany look exactly how she should've looked like, yet the producers with there huge team of editors and computer guys couldn't make this happen...
They did try it though. And they scrapped it because it looked ridiculous and to be honest it really does.

WOW, stunning. I think the violet eyes are definitely a truer portrayal of the magic the Targaryens have inside them and makes them more distinctive.
You did an amazing job with this, I wish HBO would see this and fix it before they release all their box sets. This makes such a difference even though it's a small one. It doesn't glow but it still shows us that she's got some sort of power or something different and special about her before her dragons are awoken and before she becomes the Unburnt. I really loved this, thanks for making and sharing!

dude this is incredible! To the point where I now disagree with the creators for not giving Daenerys purple eyes. If they had you as their editor, it would've worked out epic and looked so realistic.

Oh well. Maybe if they remake the TV show in 100 - 200 years or so, they will do a REAL adaption of the books (with ALL books released by then). The Targaryen with purple eyes, Khal Drogo NOT raping Daenerys, Mountain being 8 feet tall (genetic engineering ftw :P, TV show Mountain is actually what prime Robert Baratheon is supposed to be built like), Joffrey being a hunk, Catelyn Stark getting resurrected, Arthur Dayne NOT being a dual wielder, various characters not dying (looking at you, Stannis and Barristan), Sansa NOT getting raped, Rhaegar and Elia's son being alive in Essos and Dorne actually existing in the story (Doran Martell is one of the best book characters, fuck D&D for killing him off). And many other things, most notably a plot far better than season 7's. Now, all of us might not witness that remake, unless scientists unlock immortality...

This is so great! Thanks for taking the time to do this. The most striking shot where the purple eyes really enhance it the most I think is 3:43 after she comes out of the pyre with the dragon on her shoulder, and she's looking around. Wonderful job, this is how Dany should have been in the show.
DAMN. You know, I thought it would look stupid or something, like it would detract from the realism and be sort of gimmicky, but seeing it at 1:41 actually really surprised me-- how good it looked. Definitely gives her sort of this transcendent, haunting, mystical presence that I didn't know would work so damn well...
This was just ONE guy doing a simple computer trick? It looked so well, even just for that. Sure, I noticed some times where maybe it was a little bit off-putting, but with the budget that Game of Thrones has and the people they have on staff? Shiiiiit, this would be flawless.
The thing that stuck me was every time, I saw her eyes i was reminded how other worldly the Targs look !

It works in darker environments, but in lighter environments like the scene where you first see her the eyes still are very distracting. It's just that the purple really contrasts with almost everything else on screen. I think a less vibrant purple would have worked better, at least for the scenes where her eyes really stand out. But if you hadn't kept that up, there would also be no consistency, so if you kept it consistent the purple colour would not be noticeable at all for darker scenes. Still I loved your attempt at doing this.

This is an important perspective.
Are colored contacts worth the effort? Is it worth the effort to alter her eye color in post in every shot?
Before answering those questions, consider the following.
1. Some people won't notice the color.
2. Some people will find the eye color distracting.
3. Still others will complain that her eyes are not the right shade of purple.
So exactly what percentage of the audience would have been happier with purple-eyed Targaryens? 10%?
You can't please everyone no matter what you do, so again I ask -- Is it worth the effort for a small percentage of your audience?

+Cason Huffman 3 hours per scene with an average computer, but they work with a lot of powerful computers to create and rendering parts of the backgrounds, the dragons, the giants, the direwolves, the walkers and so on.
I like what you did there. You should also do the same for the show Outlander. It’s currently on STARZ and in its 4th season. The character known as Brianna, played by Sophie Skelton, is supposed to have blue eyes “exactly like her biological father Jamie Fraser.” Instead, they chose an actress who has dark brown eyes. It is a sticking point for their most loyal fanbase, since matching red hair and BLUE eyes were an essential part of the character. Her first introduction is Outlander season 2 last episode, I believe, and she’s also in the following seasons. What irritates me most is that you have actresses like Jenna Coleman willing to wear contacts to be true to the character (in Coleman’s case, Queen Victoria) yet in shows like Game of Thrones and Outlander, where a large part of the fan base is book readers, they can’t or simply don’t bother abiding by specific characteristics that are an important part of WHO the character is! Nice job btw. Perhaps you should reach out to GOT producers, give them a sample of your work and see if they’ll consider giving you the task. Or try with Outlander, Maril Davis with Tall Ship productions and Matt forgothisname are both on Twitter often. Outlander actually lost thousands of viewers over their actress pick for Brianna and refusal of contacts or changes post production.

they didnt do the purple eyes as it would be too fanasy to begin with and it may scare off some viewers who thought they were just watching a medievil show. only magic related thing happens by end of season 1 and then after its a gradual build up to ease the non-fantasy wtchers into this world. if they had begun with flashbacks of mad kings, conquerors with dragons, people with blue beards, purple eyes silver hair etc. they might have lost viewership. im pretty sure hbo axed this. as the purple eyes look great, they shouldve included it and their reasoning was poor. many actors wear lens in shows/films, nearly all who need glasses wear lens so its not that much different, minus the colour.
I don't think that is an explanation for why the magic slowly creeps into the show as that is the point of the books as well. GRR Martin makes a point of having this world almost devoid of magic and westerosi people not really believing in it and then it starts to slowly creep back in. Remember, they showed the White Walkers since the first episode, that was the point. To remind you that the game of thrones is not the actual story, that is a distraction. It's the War of the Dawn that is important.
I think part of the reasoning is that they were trying to draw in a crowd that wasn't necessarily into fantasy, so they turned down some of the magical aspects for the first season. I definitely like the purple eyes, but it looks less realistic no matter how good the effects are

Well done ! The dragon queen looks lovely with the signature Targaryen violet eyes. With the GOT Season 8 still so far away in the future , I hope the entire series gets a makeover and gets those eyes the right colour . We'll watch the whole series all over again :)

making her more unique even, and i think violet eyes look amazing, i mean technology has come a long way since, the green contacts from grinch, which if i remember right, at frist wree painful contacts, but in the end, he coudlnt wear them anymore so cgi did the work.
this aproach shown here seems to be a great and relativly low budget aproach, given, that this isn't the cheapest show.

I'm sure it is a lot of work - but if you find it fun it may be worth a shot. Unfortunately it is supposed to be a large three-pronged beard in the books (with a golden moustache). Tyrion's eyes were also supposed to not match. But in any case - I think what you've already done here is really neat.

It's a cool little experiment but I am sure you noticed that all eye colour changes on any light change which sometimes you got the violet to look perfect, while other times it was a little much. But this was fun and I liked the scenes that looked natural. Thanks for making this
It's something that would be a nice touch, but not particularly important for the show. Like you said, it's great for close up shots but if the camera isnt right in her face you dont really notice it at all.
I'd already read that when they tried it with contact that it looked horrible on camera. I'd rather they spend their time doing a much better job with the 3-Eyed Crow look than with eye color (who Blood Raven had better have a red eye)

I don't mind Emilia Clarke's natural eye colour, because it does not really affect the show at all. Given that she is pretty much the last full blooded Targaryen, as long as she looks somewhat distinctive (silver hair), that's enough for me, since she does not have to have familial resemblance to anyone else, which would be strengthened by the purple eyes. However, it was neat to see her with purple eyes-- I appreciate the effort that went into this! :)
Never read the books BUT the purple eyes do give more an effect. Without the eyes it's almost like she's just another blond with snowy white hair, but with the eyes it definitely adds to the Targaryen look.
The emotion reason for no contacts is bullshit. That would mean everyone with contacts IRL doesn't properly shows his emotions -_- , which is, of course, totally false.

Bombur I kinda agree but The contacts are obvious though. The digital method works fine and seems like you could pay someone a thousand bucks to do it for each show. Hardly a stress on the budget. Then again it probably just wasn't a big enough concern with everything else they are juggling. The wigs bother me as well. They look like wigs to me. Especially cerasai with the short one.
I read somewhere the editor of the first episode disliked the Targaryen siblings' purple eyes and said the contacts make them look "alien" and "unhuman". D&D would obviously want people to relate to Daenerys (she is one of this show's poster girls), so the contacts were dropped to give her a more natural appearance.
Not necessarily. Colored contacts make the iris of the eye appear static, and there is a surprising amount of emotion which is conveyed by opening and closing the iris.
Does everyone who wears contacts wear coloured contacts and act as a career? Do people that don't wear contacts not get irritated and affected by wearing something they're not used to wearing on the most sensitive part of the body? Should the crew waste days or even weeks doing nothing just because they have to wait for the actor to get used enough to the contacts that it doesn't affect the performance as much?
I honestly think that the purple eyes look really dramatic, it adds a bit of mystic look to her. Making her look more like an dragon queen.

If a UA-camr can edit 7 minutes of footage this well I don't understand why a show with such a high budget can't just do this for every episode.
This looks really good. The eyes gets a bit distracting but very impressive for a single person to do this. Maybe 3 people who are super attentive could have gotten seamlessly effect of natural purple eyes.

I really appreciated your artistic suggestion. Furthermore I would really like it the DVD version do this alteration to Daenerys eyes. I really enjoyed the genetic difference. With today's technology it's sad to think the show runners quit after an elementary concept such as contact lenses. With so much CGI or the method you used in your video if it differs, was a viable and satisfactory solution.

Great work. You really pinpointed not going over the top, just kinda giving it a natural hue. I really wish it was left in. I think it gives them a slightly more magical/mysterious allure and plays into something about them did set them apart from all the other houses and allow them to coexist with/tame dragons. Totally stinks that they couldn't get them the quality lenses that would be better for sensitive eyes so maybe they could at least wear them some of the time and cgi the rest.

Its low key important that the Targs Have their white hair and purple eyes because that look of otherworldliness and magic is what helped them inspire a sort of divine awe in the people of Westeros.
I love this, and if you are the one who did all of the editing (which you seemed to imply) than bravo sir, bravo.
this is just perfect, and it's not even costly. with all the time we have to wait between seasons I really don't see why they didn't do this themselves, I wouldn't mind waiting an extra day or week for her eyes to have the proper color, it would also add a lot more to her uniqueness!
