    I own a 5N, have already made this comparison in my head. I'm a pure driving enthusiast, I don't care about brand or image one iota, my wife keeps complaining I dress so bad (but I'm naturally handsome). I disgress.
    I keep coming to two things. What matters to me?
    One
    That I can drive as often as I can in something that allows my driving hobby. The 5 N perfectly fits that bill, family car and hoon car in one, both at an incredibly accomplished level. However I would want that to work, that would never happen with the Ferrari. Just too much associations that wouldn't allow me to go under the radar.
    Two
    The 5N made me realise it is not if something is real that is important, rather what matters is if it is good. When you watch a movie, you don't care if the movie is real or even realistic, you care if it's good and 'moves' you (pun intended). The Matrix is a great movie on so many levels we even wonder if it's more real than real ;) When you dance, you don't care if the music is real or recorded or electronic, you care if the music is good for dancing or not. And as it turns out it's the same with cars. Cars are, for some at least, entertainment pur sang.
    After owning too many aftermarket exhausts and switching off fake interior sounds that I hated, I now love driving my 5N pretending to be a gas car. Or not, depending on fancy, mood and fatigue level. Amazing.

      I bought the I5N as a poor man’s RS6 Avant. Now I wonder if I’d even trade for an RS6. Don’t get me wrong the RS6 is still one of my all time favs, but this car might be a bit better (aside from sound and luxury) and significantly cheaper to run/maintain. If I could afford it, I’d take the Lusso, but that’s never happening. But i sure am glad Hyundai was able to bring a car to market with comparable performance and grins for 1/4 of the cost.
      For those into tech (electronics, VR, gaming, etc…), I don’t think there’s anything on the market that combines tech and performance to the level of the I5N. I’ve owned/driven a lot of performance cars in my life. One drive in the I5N and I was signing paperwork within the hour. EV’s aren’t for everyone, but for the car enthusiast that also loves tech, this is the perfect match.
      Congrats on the ride, everything you said makes me think we might be related😂. This thing is a constant grin machine. Never Just Drive!

      @@dijital4588 Dang, I've always pictured the RS6 as my "attainable" dream car. I really liked the 5 N when I test drove it, but I've never driven an RS6 - I only like it because of how it looks, and of course, the power numbers and features it has (eg those adaptive LED headlights are pretty sweet).

    • @dijital4588
      @dijital4588 2 дні тому +3

      @@crxtodd16 I could shoot for a used RS6 but I’m not really interested in owning a German performance/luxury car out of warranty. I think a new one starts around $130k which is well out of my budget until my kids education is paid for. And even then, I think i could find better ways to use that much capital. On paper the I5N is slightly quicker and more spacious. I’m over 6ft and do a lot of soccer dad stuff, so that space matters quite a bit.
      In the end, you’re paying a premium for better interior appointments, the Audi badge, superior ride quality, better sound, better audio system, longer track run time, no range anxiety, less depreciation as a percentage (not dollar amount), and IMO better looks. But you’re also getting worse infotainment, poor gas mileage, less room, shorter warranty period, higher maintenance costs, less performance, and more pollution.
      I still love the RS6, but the I5N has me questioning if it’s really worth 2x the price.

    Similarly to how there are traditional ICE cars for every type of buyer, I'm glad that the EV market is developing in such a way that there can be a variety of options for buyers to select whatever kind of car they want within the EV space. EVs make sense for a lot of people and I can see the appeal for certain lifestyles. Giving those buyers an option to get something fun and engaging without significantly compromising on what they may find attractive about an Electric through customization *cannot* be a bad thing. This is still a burgeoning market segment that I think Hyundai is doing an excellent job in showing the rest of the industry how it can be done well.

  • @scott8919
    @scott8919 5 днів тому +21

    The segment about the Matrix is spot on and I never even thought of it that way. That's why people love gas cars; There's many more ways the car is giving you feedback.
    Another way of looking at "gas mode"... you can drive it like a buffoon and you have no engine or transmission to blow up. No pistons, gears, crankshafts, exhaust, etc., but all the appeal aside from a manual gearbox. Just a battery and two electric motors.

    • @stefanSBD-w5s
      @stefanSBD-w5s 5 днів тому +5

      And on top, given you can make it front wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, real wheel drive and if you would be able to select any type of sound, it would be possible to, say, drive a civic type R one time and a Ferrari f40 the other time. With some electronics trickery they could mimic the behavior of different types of cars. The potential is enormous.

    The glorious thing about this comparision is that the actual answer is "why not both?". I love them both, for entirely different reasons. I'm not a Ferrari guy, but the proportions of the Lusso are perfection. The sound is nearly unrivaled. And then the Ioniq-5N arrives. With similar performance and maybe better engagement, which is a wild statement, I never thought I'd make. Given the choice? I'd have both. As with a ton of other commenters, the reality is I can afford one, and not the other, and it's the 5N. I'm trying desperately to convince myself I should get a 5N.

    • @crxtodd16
      @crxtodd16 5 днів тому +1

      Thanks for the replies! I am a widower, so it's just me and my 2 young kids - I don't really need a lot of space in the car, plus I have a small SUV in case I need to carry more stuff.
      I love the RS3 because there are tons of mods I can do, and because it's light and handles like a go-kart (though I've only driven a 2025 S3, so I'm going off that). I always modify my cars, I like making them get more power and making them unique. However, ever since my wife passed away, I am wanting to spend less time in the garage and more time with my kids, hence the allure of the EV (ie I can't modify it).
      Also, I have solar panels, I even recently upgraded mine so during summer I'm overproducing. That said, the Ioniq would definitely be cheaper overall, because I wouldn't waste money on modifications and I wouldn't be paying as much for gas/energy. BUT, on the flip side, would I be content with the Ioniq after a couple years? Or would I be frustrated that I can't get more power?
      Lastly, there are some creature comforts that are factors. With the Ioniq you get heated and ventilated seats, plus a heated steering wheel. I love ventilated seats and a heated wheel.
      On the RS3 the only thing I'd get that the Ioniq doesn't have is a HUD. I had a G70 a few years ago, and I LOVED the HUD in that thing. So.... Ugh. I don't know.
      I'm torn.

    14:59 I genuinely think Hyundai is one of the best in the business when it comes to ergonomic design, especially their steering wheels. They give you so many switches and controls to do so many different things, but the spokes are kept small, unlike the likes of Chevy, Subaru, and Toyota. All of the buttons are easy to press without moving your hand too far out the wheel, but the buttons are far enough out of the way that they'll never catch your hand. The only other makes I can think of that consistently do steering wheels as good as Hyundai are Mazda and Porsche. Though I will cede that the 11th gen Civic steering wheel is excellent.

    The statement about the refrence points is spot on. Driving a car is ALL about feel, sound, weight, movement,vibration and rythm all working together. If you can't "feel" the engine even when sitting still then it's missing something, part of it is incomplete. EV's are getting better, but they will never have a soul.

      @dijital4588 4 дні тому

      If you haven’t driven one, it might be worth a test drive if you can. The engineers did a lot to give it feel and feedback. There’s vibrations and bangs. With the engine sounds on you can feel and hear the engine idling. You can feel vibration when you rev the car from a standstill. I can honestly say, if I was blindfolded, I’m not sure I’d be able to tell the difference between the engine/trans in the ElantraN/i30N and the I5N.

Gas, oil..muted in modern cars, to be sure but still there.

I decided on a used 2019 BMW i3n instead for only $15k instead of $70k for the Ionic 5N. 90% of the fun for so much less. Maybe after the Ionic 5 N becomes a used car in a few years and if it actually depreciates like all other electric cars, then it should be much more affordable to the single middle class man.

      @Jazzzon777 the one in the Mach E gives you no real sense of speed at all. Because the I5N replicates the way an engine works, it helps give you that perception of the reality people are used to. The one in the Mach E is just noise that gets higher pitched as you get faster. And it just sounds like some futuristic noise and doesn't really try to give you a sense of speed.

    Think about this way. The Porsche 911 is called 911, because Peugeot reserved the naming rights to all 3 digit numbers with a 0 in the middle, back in the day and Porsche wanted to name their car the 901. Peugeot won that lawsuit. Car names/designations are registered trademarks of the respective companies.

      Yes. Gears are torque limited and mapped to simulate gears. You can "shift" and bog the engine. You don't get 100% power in the shifting mode that way you don't lose torque at the top of each "gear" because the single geared electric motor loses torque at high speeds.

    Having seen the I5N many times (and in person) I've come away with a thought. Yes, the ability to shift and play a soundtrack for reference points makes this EV more engaging than you'd expect, but it also makes it slower...and that's okay if what you want is "old school" engagement. What I'm wondering about is the reference points the I5N provides in its fastest mode. When the car is set up to do fast laps around a track, which, of course, means you're NOT shifting it, are there EV reverence points that are simply different and, perhaps more difficult, for the average enthusiast driver to pick up on? Would you have to be a professional racing driver...maybe even a professional EV race car driver to notice and make use of EV reference points?
    Additionally, and somewhat related, I am reminded that EVs DO make noises. Electric motors do make noises, and tires, brakes, etc. still make themselves known. EV noises are not what we're used to, and as time goes on, manufacturers may design their electric motors to sound certain ways (see the Rimac driven by Koenigsegg and Hennessey on the Top Gear feature "Ultimate Hypercar Boss Track Test").
    I suppose I am excited about these things (sounds, options, interaction choices, etc.) being developed for "fun" EVs...but I still think the missing piece that makes all the difference is weight. At least for me. I personally don't have any desire for a fifteen ton car regardless of the power figure...whether it's gas powered (see BMW's latest weight figures) or EV.
    Great video comparison, guys. Loved it.

Tools depreciate. It's a fact of life. Furthermore, I'd be willing to bet the Ioniq would age much better. Look at how much sagging the interior of the Ferrari has. This rhetoric about EVs needing to be fun according to these auto "journalists" is essentially the want for a faster horse and carriage in the face of Henry Ford. The best drivers around are adaptable to the whatever inputs are available to them and they manage just fine without the fake noise.
    I like the 5N but the resources spent could have been put to better use. For example, why have a N Grin Boost when you might be able to have 641HP on tap all the time? What's the limiting factor to solve for that?

    • @Snerdles
      @Snerdles 4 дні тому +1

      Heat and battery longevity. Batteries are only rated to be able to operate in temperature bands and can only export certain amounts of energy within those bands.
      641HP is 477KW. 477kw is nearly half a megawatt, we're talking small power plant levels of energy moving (if even for short periods of time) around the vehicle.
      If you look at other performance EVs many of them will limit power after under 10 minutes of spirited driving to avoid things like thermal runaway causing fires and battery damage or degradation.
      Thinking about it another way, if you were to floor it and actually pull 477kw out of an 84kwh battery the battery would go from 100-0 in just over 10 minutes. The car is one of the fastest charging cars in North America and can only do 10-80 in perfect conditions in 18 minutes and that is almost never actually achieved in the real world, normally taking 20-22 minutes.
      That amount of output would probably ignite the car.
      That's not to mention the motors also generate heat and need to be thermally managed and the heat pump system can only move a certain amount of heat around in any given period of time. So allowing all of the power all of the time could end up being catastrophic for components and Hyundai is one of the few manufacturers that honor warranty for their vehicles even if you track it.
