This had me laughing too hard. I think maybe they were just trying to cover its eyes to calm it down or to try to make it hard for it to bite them. And maybe it was mostly women on the boat at first who were afraid of getting injured by it considering it weighs hundreds of pounds and was thrashing around. I think people are thinking they are lighter than they are because they're cute or something. That's the most charitable interpretation. They could have been dumb too and that's often the answer nowadays.
The running out of time part was overly dramatic but they were smart to use the wet towel to keep the skin from drying out. Not as smart in placing it over the blow hole vs mainly the eyes (so it wouldn’t be so scared and hit them when they approached) but dolphins can hold their breath for a really long time so it wasn’t as bad of a mistake for they time it would take to lift it out the boat.
It is rumored that this dolphin is still wearing that blue t-shirt to this very day

It more so has to do with something in their inner ear + their body weight that can cause paralysis if they are beached too long. And the dolphin flopping on the boat could’ve injured itself and the people as well
@Phidippus Audax Those are pretty big dolphins. This one was probably closer to 350 lbs. Which is still heavy and hard to pick up when it is slender, wet, and fish shaped.
The men that were strong enough to lift him all cowered in the back until finally one man did step forward to help. I like the way the camera shows a man behind him standing there watching not helping. When the rest of the men see its now safe then they jump in to help. Kudos to the first man to step in. You Sir, are the true leader and hero here!
Way to assume that man couldn't have had a physical injury or disease that prevented him from lifting a 600 pound dolphin. Also where were the women in all of this?

Tourists are t required to know exactly what to do in that situation. You’re expectations are too high. Also panic and shock changes the mind and can make it hard to think in the moment.

A deer has found itself stuck in a deep pit and onlookers are not quite sure how to get the deer up and out without her struggling and causing more unnecessary harm (not to mention it would take at least 3 full grown men to pull her out anyway). Well, in walks Diego Ruiz, who bestows his mighty master plan. "Get the deer out of the hole!"
No freaking dip Sherlock, it takes a bit more careful planning to help a large animal out then just stating the prefured end result
Corny Owl A deer in a hole won't die from being in a hole. A dolphin in a boat has very limited time. They had a boatload of people and did nothing except panic
+Corny Owl there was no need for that much men, just lift the dolphin s neck on the side of the boat then push the rest of his body over board, this way you only lift a part of the weight if the animal at a time. Besides, a whole must be very deep for a deer to not be able to get out, it could also panic when you try to help him and give you a mighty bash with it s horns. I think the dolphin is smart enough to notice someone helping him, and it hadn t enough energy to flick around violently anymore.
The dolphin is too heavy, it's also wet/slippery and it's flopping. Have you have tried to pick up a fish out of water? You must not have.

The dolphin stayed calm when the guys were grabbing and carrying him. Such a smart species, he knew the humans were trying to help him. If it was a fish or something, it would have struggled its way.

The dolphin was in shock, it just had the wind knocked out of it, then its blowhole was covered by the wet t-shirt so it couldn't breathe... this is why it was prostrate.
They struggle because they can't breathe. Try cutting off your oxygen supply and see how calm you are.

Except for the fact that their fins are super hard. Getting hit by one would be very painful, so it's reasonable to approach the animal slowly. It was a good idea to put wet clothes on the dolphin, but you should never cover the blowhole because it needs to breath, you also never pour water over its blowhole, or it will drown

I mostly liked how they panicked like 20 minutes out of water for a air breathing animal was going to be the death of it! I get to long out of water could cause it to dehydrate but they had the right idea about keeping it wet!

Exactly. Of course they knew they had to get it back into the sea, but they didn't know what to do to accomplish that, seeing as picking up and throwing a likely panicked wild animal isn't a simple task. Sure, it's not a shark, but neither is a moose, and I'm sure if a moose got stuck in your truck, you'd be a bit flabbergasted as well.
Put towels on him? All they had to do was throw him back in. LOL!

He desperately needed to get back into the water??? Dolphins breathe air! They don’t breathe underwater. He can survive outside the water, especially if his skin is kept wet. They would have had all time in the world to just grab him safely without any reason to hurry or panic. The biggest problem was not that he is out of the water but that he himself just panics in the boat and hurting himself while swinging his tail trying to move away from all the scared screaming chickens around him.
I think it has something to do with gravity once they out off water and on their belly may suffocate them selfs
The thing is that the skin of a dolphin gets dry very easily and they can get heatstroke if they are not kept wet. I'm glad someone had the sense to get a wet towel or shirt to put on the dolphin.

They can't stay out of water their organs are used to water buoyancy. Out of water all their organs begin to collapse and fail.

The dolphin was simply nervous due to the activity with his companions.
The dolphin was not in danger at any time until the 'hero' of the day put a wet shirt on him covering the spiracle he uses to breathe (just like putting a wet towel over a person's mouth to torture him).
At that time the dolphin was in danger of suffocation.
It would have been more sensible to use the shirt by passing it under the dolphin to catch it by the sleeves and lift it to throw it out of the boat.
Fortunately the animal was able to escape its tormentor.
As someone else said in another comment: "the dolphin was the smartest animal on that boat".

I always breath through my nose, which is a good idea with all the pollution and virus's in the air, with a mask on with Covid 19 around..... maybe I was a Dolphin in the last life, Plenty of room to play, plenty to eat, total freedom, wonderful life, they must be smarter than these humans.....
