I found this by chance and I am absolutely astonished I have never heard of a project of such magnitude and time based dedication; at an international level. UNBELIEVABLE, this should be all over the news as a celebration of humanity in these difficult times.

@@tsd6916 It actually has been on the news a fair bit, especially the last couple of days, when it was first signed off, and when construction first started.
It's just that it isn't currently a super high importance and general interest item yet ( since it's still decades away from producing energy, and even then it will never make electricity ), and it's all very long term.
It would be nice if things like this were higher priority than a lot of other stuff though.

Ony Europe can get a team going that has china Russer japan India Korea and the USA as members working together. That investment will benefit all stakeholders and ensure Big resources to pull from all over the world while that makes it more complicated in the short run with Iter Components bind made around the world. In the long run thanks to Iter it will be possible to for that technology to be passed down into fusion powerplants that each stakeholder can build on there own. Iter will be the first of a kind but it will not be last of a kind.

Sadly it has budget of 20 bil (or around that). The US could fund it alone using 2% of yearly military budget. I think the real gold rush will happen after this test reactor fires and works. Cheap, clean, almost infinite energy, space travel (once reactors get small enough)...

Oil company's should understood that fusion isn't thread for them. Cheap electric energy can help easy clear atmosphere from excess CO2 and even produce oil in artificial way because diesel engine is very efficient and cheap so fusion revolution doesn't mean oil revolution.

yes it is an amazing piece of engineering but this is just a prototype, and will require another iteration of the design that is larger still before it is ready to provide power for the grid. i'm afraid fusion by this method is still someway off.

I agree, but this will still provide hugely important scientific data and knowledge that will be crucial for the next step, no matter what direction follows, and pave the way for commercial fusion electricity.

@@snetmotnosrorb3946 i suppose i should have added that in my opinion by the time this sort of fusion is available that it will do nothing to mitigate the effects of climate change - it will be too late, it's too late now. I mention this because the comments here have a "nuclear fusion will save the world" kind of vibe.

Beautiful mix of top-notch animations and drawings together with some real-world imagery of already existing things. A huge shoutout for the people who visualized this and made this video, because we all know: explaining science (and ITER machinery is a science on its own) is sometimes really hard without visualization techniques.

Actually, it was the US and Soviet Union that started it, bringing in the EU and Japan at the start. The US dropped out for a few years, before coming back. Russia replaced the USSR. China, South Korea and Canada then joined in. Canada backed out however. Then the final full member to date was India. Australia recently signed an agreement to participate, though I don't believe as a full member.

It's a wonderful device, and I dearly hope it works to everyone's satisfaction, but I still don't see the path from ITER to usable fusion power production. Obviously no commercial power station would be built at anything like the cost of ITER, and even if the problems associated with high temperature plasmas could be solved, it is hard to see this great device as a practical prototype. Even if it works flawlessly, it may go down in history as a noble dead end.

I agree. But on a positive note, we will gain knowledge. Not only will it's development be beneficial to other sectors as there are challenges to overcome, we will also figure out the 'why not' if it turns out to be a dead end. If anything it will then guide the science-world to develop a different type of technology to generate energy. I think it's also great that several countries are collaborating to take on the challenge.

This will not be for commercial use, some of you day dreamers need to read the fjneprint. It's basically what they did with the particle accelerator. It's a project that took decades, failure upon failure . This won't be any different, it's clearly stated that it can only of it even works. Can output BRIEFLY 10x the power it's been given in theory.
ITER's thermonuclear fusion reactor will attempt to use 50 MW of heating power to create a plasma of 500 MW (thermal) for periods of 400 to 600 seconds.
Wouw.....there goes billions for a flicker of hope. Don't get me wrong, it's a step but not even close to being a reactor that will be useful for us.

I don't know what the world leaders are doing...
There should be commity with USA China and EU and around 500.000.000 peoples [easlly] that can afford it easy should all pay special 10 Euro tax online [so noone steals it] only for developing this and simillar technologies...
That would give 5.000.000.000 per month for develope of that and other GREEN technologies. I would gladly pay this 120 euro per year

I'm stunned by the delay in this project... I believe in it but I live not far away and I know the French mentality which consists in making it last as long as possible... I won't be surprised if the first test is not done before 2050.
For example, a project for an expressway in Marseille has been planned since the 1970s. As long as the project was in the hands of the public, the work was not moving forward. As soon as it fell into private hands with Bouygues, in 3 years the project was almost finished.
So the first test in 2025? I can't believe it.
