  • It’s been likened to the filter of a swimming pool and an oversized ash tray. It’s been called alien in shape and hellish in its affinity for heat. Others describe it lovingly as a “plasma toilet.” But whatever your analogy of choice, the ITER divertor is an impressive product of scientific, engineering, and logistic ingenuity, designed to exhaust contaminated particles from the plasma to maintain the fusion reaction inside the tokamak.

It is fascinating to see how these components are manufactured in different parts of the world and come together to ITER. It feels like when people with different cultures and nationality can gather together to work for a common goal (also a very difficult subject). This project relates human from the world. I would like to see more of these!

Facinating to see how the scientist and engineering community from different cultures discuss, understand and concludes for actions day in and day out.
This is perhaps an unique example how human determination and intelligence can overcome natural barriers

Thank you for going into the specifics of the ITER machine, it is really interesting.
I love this project and even if the only thing ITER did was provide a small chance of working fusion and nothing else I would be for it.
But many people are still very sceptical so I would like to ask you if you could you cover some of the innovations that have been done over the course of the ITER project and show that while they might originally have been meant for fusion research that they also have other important applications outside of this.
I think it is important that even If people are sceptical about fusion research that it produces tangible results that cannot be denied.

Great job, love what you're doing documenting this engineering feat! Looking forward for the next videos.
I just wanted to point out that at 3:01 the animation can be misleading: the "swirl" (twisted copper tape) does not move, it is actually fixed in place, and induces turbulence as the water travels around it (source: I work on the PFUs for WEST at CEA).

    • @iterorganization

You are absolutely right. The swirl is stationary, indeed. Thank you for pointing that out. Quite an amazing system.

Great video! Looking at specific components of the ITER project really makes it "real". This is the sort of UA-cam edu-entertainment that truly justifies the enormous complexity, cost, and engineering that needs to go into viable fusion prototypes. Please make more like this, and as a shout out to others like you: (more) Space-X videos, Marble Machine X Build/Design Series, are what we all need. What tools do the fabricators/suppliers use? Why'd you guys choose Tungsten? Why Copper Tubes? Why the Armor? What happens without it? What are engineering tolerances? Why are they important for that part? How are you specifying them? etc! etc! Make anyone who watches this into little-amatuer-Fusion Engineers! Keep it up!

@@iterorganization Thanks! Awesome job from you and the whole ITER Communications team. This sort and the amount of social media connection is really great.
I liked the videos about the drone pilot for example a lot, but I agree with the others, more videos close to the engineers and the people actually building it. Maybe the political aspect might be worth looking into too, the ITER as a peace project part.
Also I think you might be able to improve the Q&A section with not too much effort. Audio quality isn't too great, that would make a big difference. A bit more light might also improve image quality, but that's less important.

I know that they invest a lot in making promotional videos that fail to mention the numerous problems that they are dealing with.
    w=sigma * fluß oder Wirkung(w) = Wirkquerschnitt (Sigma) * Fluß (Teilchen)

When your fusion reactor design costs many billions of dollars, you know it's wrong. It is utterly useless to humanity, to have such expensive fusion reactors. That only reinforces the stupid paradigm of centralised production and distribution of electricity, which is undemocratic, ridiculously inefficient, and counter to what humanity actually needs.
If you can't make a fusion reactor the size of a shipping container, make it spew out 5MW for less than 5 million dollars, then your reactor design is bad.
Personally, I hope that no steady-state reactor design ever produces a single watt of electricity for the grid, because it will be the most expensive energy ever created. The future of fusion is pulsed devices, not steady-state ones.

The concept is flawed. Started at $15B, then $30B and it keeps going up with no results. There new better fusion solutions that twist the energy stream as to stop electrons from smashing into the walls ( allowing the reaction to continue longer based on energy and stability) or there is the B11 concepts (two, one with laser technology and DPL) of which are more plausible to succeed. So why pour $B into ITER? I say slow it down, no more funding until they show progress and divert future funding to the more promising Fusion technologies.
