Really beautiful! So tangible when there is a REAL damn tape running in the machine. I was born in '82, so anything this analog is awesome to see demonstrated. Thank you!
I'm totally impressed by your ability to switch between playing and knob dialing. I modded my echo so the speed can be controlled by foot so I can keep both my hands playing.
Pretty good and very easy to use ..cause you dont have to worry about tape and the problems of wow and flutter that go with it ... on the other hand its exactly those idiosyncrasies that make the original tape echos so special . I have an re101 for sale at the moment .
@flatninetnine Depends what sound you want. If you are recording an electric guitar I would definitely recommend recording through a mike/amp. But all depends what kind of sound you want.
@TheClublove I looked up GSi. Its all computer emulation. Therefore, its not even in the same equipment category as the RE-201. This equipment is a line-in, analog effect unit. It uses magnetic tape to create an analog delay directly from an electric instrument or other source. No computer program could do that. Even the Boss Space Echo pedal is more interactive than that. So yes, there isn't the same depth. But more depth than the analog has would make the sound very shitty, and lower quality.
@mynmyself tapes are available on ebay, they are dead easy to replace, and this unit is fairly easy to get serviced, except if the motor stops working, then it's pretty stuffed.
thanks!! This sounds so great! I have it as a favorite. Do you have any original songs that you used the RE-20 on? I play violin too so I really appreciate your playing.
@clumpft You need to lubricate both upper and lower bearings on the motor - it'll keep working for ever then! Getting to the lower bearing though, involves removing the motor and dismantling it - as I found out...;c)
Yeah, needs some more analogue to be BoC though :p - maybe some wow and flutter. Seriously though OP, you should release that as a full length downtempo track
I just received my space echo a week ago. The tape that was installed was connected by a clear tape that was causing a slight wow and flutter effect everytime it passed the heads. I was using it today and the tape split. Do I load up a new tape or connect the tape again. If i need to load up a new tape, how do I do it? Is there any videos or instruction manuals on how to replace the tape loop? Please HALP!
Well obviously, but he's right - that's what it's built for - whether it succeeds or not is another matter...I got a Boss RE-20 (on reccomendation of Dave Wyndorf, Monster Magnet!) as a means of simple psych when playing guitar and singing as I haven't got chance to 'knob twiddle', if you want...but got an RE-201 on it's way tomorrow so let's see how they compare...then I can get an Echoplex and compare the 201 to that, ha!
how easy is to find new tapes? i wanna buy a 201, but i am kind of concerned towards how often i will need to put on new tape, how difficult will it be to replace them and how difficult will it be to find new ones...
abertronic How you compare in sound the Ace Tone Ec10 to the Re 201 ?? Im interested in this two tape echos ,but i have to choose one... I want the most trippy or warm . I hope your help
i really really want a space echo but unfortunately all i can afford is the boss pedal that pays tribute to this awesome device. ;_; great playing to 5/5
@TheClublove are you just cutting and pasting your quote about Soundware into every youtube conversation concerning the space echo? lame did you even listen to this awesome post?
Its pretty good but I still don't think it can match real tape. If you after a good digital emulation have a look at the Strymon El Capistan , in my opinion much better than the boss re-20.

I had the pleasure of seeing one of these in a studio. They're going for 600-800 bucks. It's definitely a classic.
best demo of this unit yet! that put me into freakin' orbit!
the space echo is beautiful, your playing is beautiful
So freakin cool! The sounds you're creating are hypnotic!
Beautiful sound, love a violin played through a tape echo. Mint one at that.
Job well done! Roland should hire you to demo all their equipment, I want one of these units so dearly now!
I just watched that twice, this is so beautiful. And you play very very nice as well.
5 Stars, definitely...

I love these so damn much. I want one so badly.
Thanks to you, I am tempted to pick up a violin to play with my other instruments.
Excellent video! sounds fantastic. I soooo want on old 201. Endless tweeking to be made.
Thankyou! Yes the only difference is the spring reverb tank included in the re201 and also the 201 has bass/treble controls over the echos .
Wow, I was lloking for a RE demo but I LOVE your music, I'm checking your channel, I'd love to play with you.
Awesome stuff, man. Kubrick Shining sounds, all kinds of stuff.
omg that sounds incredibly good.
That sounds fantastic!!
Cool to see a demo using a violin!
I love your playing

Thanks! Just jamming.. actually someone has used some samples from my demos to make songs. I'll post links as soon as they are finished.
wtf a violin trough a space echo.. SOUNDS so good
gorgeous

How do you get the sound from the violin? Is it an electric violin or you are using a mic?
Awesome sound! love how you play :)
Thanks!!. The El Capistan sounds great!! Thanks for letting me know about that .
i'm impressed.
0:50-1:20 best bit sounds soooo cool
Awesome on lots'a levels.
Stunning! 5 stars ;)
thanks!! This sounds so great! I have it as a favorite. Do you have any original songs that you used the RE-20 on? I play violin too so I really appreciate your playing.
Your video demos of this unit are breathtaking.
One question though - What are the differences between the 101 and 201 - is reverb the only factor?
@clumpft You need to lubricate both upper and lower bearings on the motor - it'll keep working for ever then! Getting to the lower bearing though, involves removing the motor and dismantling it - as I found out...;c)
Good stuff dude!!!
Hi there, Awesome demo!
Can I ask what you are playing your violin into? Is there an amp from the space echo or do you have it connected to a mixer?
Loved the plastic dreams
The part starting at around 1:00 sounds sort of like Boards of Canada.
Yeah, needs some more analogue to be BoC though :p - maybe some wow and flutter.
Seriously though OP, you should release that as a full length downtempo track
that's the greatest echo on earth
Good stuff, reminds me of Nash the Slash!

its a yamaha ev205 electric 5 string. Its not bad once you upgrade to some nicer strings.
@Shellath Trippin' bawls!
Woah. Trippy.
What is the song starting at 0:50? If it's not a song I think you should make it into a song, its awesome!
brilliant!

@Jasari149 usually every 50 hours of usage.
Awesome!
@Desmaad ebay, I just got 2 original roland ones there
fantastique
abertronic How you compare in sound the Ace Tone Ec10 to the Re 201 ?? Im interested in this two tape echos ,but i have to choose one... I want the most trippy or warm . I hope your help
there's one of these for sale for $450, should I get it?
is there only one multi head setting? is it 2:1 ratio or something?
@miraeja Thankyou!
How often do you have to replace the tape?
Wonderfull
@spongah Get the big stuff!!!!
nice! thats awesome! lets start a band!
What is the song that you start playing at 0:50?
Do you still have the roland 201 space echo?
Breath taking tape delay
hell yeah!
@borneo215 You realize they still make analog tape echoes...right?
Where do you get new tape for this thing?
wt you think about the boss RE20?
trippy !
More important than cosmetics is that the unit works well.
hey man you want to start a band? I need to add viola to a few tracks
Any1 who can tell me what players or groups use these psychedelic sounds and effect in there music?
i really really want a space echo but unfortunately all i can afford is the boss pedal that pays tribute to this awesome device. ;_;
great playing to
5/5
that sounds INCREDIBLE. it's as if you're playing carnegie or something.
GREAT! 0:55
this would be so nice in a rock n roll band
anyone know if the Boss RE-20 is an accurate recreation? anyone try both?thx
what violin do you use?
@Metamusik I don't care for the percussive sound you get on the repeats when you use a guitar. I prefer the 501, myself.
oh i want one!.........
sweet :)
I miss analog so much : ' (
@TheClublove are you just cutting and pasting your quote about Soundware into every youtube conversation concerning the space echo? lame
did you even listen to this awesome post?
ah right - well it sonds very cool - very boards of canada
Out of interest do you remember what notes you were playing?
@locoboxspaceship Nope...!
looks from the 70's
re 201's , these days, go for between 500 - 800 USD depending on condition.
@Coldrhythm
"wich is built to sound exacly like this!!"
HAHAHAHA
I wish i have one, but there's no more RE201
@jebbbbej
You need to make them yourself.. or buy the overpriced 3rd party loops that are available. PM me for more info.
Whoa, nice video. That thong looks like a hell of alot of fun.
just improvisation!
Nothing sounds quite like it. Still THE echo effect in my opinion.
No real difference in regards to the delay types. If you have a look at the manuals for both you can see the tape head settings for each delay.
omar rodriguez lopez aka the mars volta
Reminds me of Skyrim some how.
Its pretty good but I still don't think it can match real tape. If you after a good digital emulation have a look at the Strymon El Capistan , in my opinion much better than the boss re-20.
you're so progressive!
sounds like boards of canada
