The interesting thing about Starmer's speech is that he chose the topics and phrasing from the perspective of people who have conservative leanings. Decency and law, dignity and sincerity. That's why the silence on the other side was so great. Starmers strong words hit them hard.

He nailed it. My dad died of Covid, confused, frightened and alone. His brain damage from mini strokes made it terrible, for an otherwise strong man. He died hard, as we, his children, looked on through a video screen, trying to comfort him down a phone, held by an exhausted medic who was too tired to concentrate and hold the phone so he could properly hear us; wondering why his children were not there with him at his darkest moment. He’s gone and we followed the rules. And the guilt I feel is something I have never spoken of until this moment. Starma speaks for so many of us. If Boris stays, it’s a giant F U to Britain from the Conservative cults.

I lost both of my grandparents to covid. They passed away within two hours of each other on the same day. They were brilliant, true and honest people who loved life. We unfortunately hardly got to see my grandad who passed away with Alzheimers in a care home on his own. We didn’t know that my grandma passed away until she wasn’t picking up her phone until she was discovered by my dad who found her deceased on her own at home.
We absolutely respected the rules of isolation during the lockdown period and can’t believe what this ruling government has done. We are devastated that we couldn’t visit them. I think that the news that my grandma couldn’t see her husband or her family and friends ultimately broke her heart.
We still mourn and regret the actions we should have taken, now seeing what our leaders have done.
My grandparents both died alone but we inseparable in life. I know that they’re together in a far better place than this.

My husband works in A&E and they have been swamped for the last two years - but it would've been so much worse if more people had flouted the rules, we would have lost thousands more. To quote Thatcher was a stroke of genius. I have waited a long time to finally hear Starmer in full Barrister mode forensically picking part a defence of a pathetic man who sits opposite him in parliament, making him look the self-entitled fool he really is.
Heard a guy on the radio the other day trying to defend the government parties and gatherings by saying that they worked very hard so deserved a break, then started saying "well boris had already had covid and had been very ill", before he could finish he was cut of by the interviewer saying " that is not a mitigating circumstance"
I was sat in the car dumb founded i got the impression that he believed that because boris's job is so much more important and he had already had covid that the restrictions didn't apply to him.
That was not the case for anyone else in the country, we all had to isolate the full two weeks whether we had been vaccinated, had previously caught covid or not, people lost jobs because they were having to isolate several times in a row as different member of their household tested positive in turn.
If a partner or sibling tested positive you and they would have to isolate, then if by the time they were ready to end isolation you test positive the isolation clock would start again for both of you.
I agree. Also, referencing Churchill as well as Thatcher was a very clever way of appealing to Tory MPs into taking action. People have said referencing them makes Starmer a Tory himself, but I think they're missing the point. He uses examples that will persuade those its aimed towards. In this case, cabinet and the Tory backbenchers.

At 6:42 you can see Jacob trying to signal to the speaker to ask him to wrap it up. Knowing how good this speech was, he wanted it to end. I'm so pleased he was made to listen to it in its entirety.
The clever part of this speech was the way he addressed the cabinet at the end, ignoring the PM as if to say "this guy's not worth bothering with, he'll never change, but you lot...do you really want to f**k yourselves over by allying yourself to him?" There were some very uncomfortable looking cabinet ministers when Starmer finally sat down. Definitely his best moment in the commons.
That’s been my thinking this whole time. I don’t like them, but they should boot him out for their own good. They typically care about themselves, so you’d think their self-preservation would’ve kicked in by now.

Regardless of the speech (which was spot on), it’s just really respectful to hear a quieter dignity in the House of Commons. I’ve been so consistently deterred and annoyed by the near constant noise and jeering. That first half of Starmer’s address, and the hush through which it was observed, is truly a breath of fresh air.
And the quiet really chilled the PM

I lost a dear friend to suicide during lockdown. The misery of his enforced isolation during his chronic depression was, I'm sure, a factor in his death. He was a person of such kindness, generosity and integrity. His life was one of service in the public sphere and he had already made significant and positive changes through his work. Now all of what he could have been and done is lost. The laughter of these jeering clowns is a mockery of him and all the others who died alone.

I'm no fan of Mr Starter, or the Labour party but that is the greatest speech that I've heard in over 30 years., Maybe even longer. It has done more for the Labour party today.

As a German I must admit I am deeply impressed by this speech. Mr. Starmer knows the qualities a PM should have. Mr. Johnson does not. On the other hand Great Britain has every reason to be proud about such a wonderful parliament where those speeches are possible. I am sure GB is going to overcome these days with the honesty that Mr. Starmer showed in his speech and which is from my point of view very british.
If only the UK could have Martin Schulz to lead them...

Thanks for your insight, friend from across the water! Whilst you feel sure, most of us mainly feel "Hope" that our democracy remains intact, despite the fact that many of us have a funny way of showing it. I too am proud of our parliamentary process, which makes Johnson's approach to office feel so much worse. Starmer is a member of the Trilateral Commission. Checking who are the other members and what they stand for, we have an idea of what kind of Labour he is.
A transparent use of supposed admiration for a former Tory icon as a means of piquing the Tory conscience. Thatcher was, as we all know, prone to white-washing/denying illegal activities of her government to save face. She lied, used misinformation and her own ignorance to deny wrong doing of her own government. I don't think Starmer's speech is particularly good as it was full of conceit. But Johnson IS a bellend and should be replaced. I await the appearance of someone who talks with his/her own voice, without rhetoric...without wanting to appeal to anyone or wanting to sway people politically, someone who simply speaks from their heart.
One of the most eloquent and heartfelt speeches I've ever seen. As an American, his comment that the PM's lack of integrity and character is priced in, reminds me of our experience with Trump. Too many people lowered their leadership standards. Thank God we voted him out of office.

Well done Keir. As someone who works with vulnerable special needs and a parent of a child with Special needs. I've had to practically become recluse. My daughter has been unable to attend school for a year due to waiting on an ehcp, held up due to covid. We've lost over a year of our lives, following these ridiculous rules. I've had to take 3 vaccines or I'd have lost my job, I've had to do lft test 3 times a week and a pcr once a week for work. I'm an exhausted single working mum/carer. I've seen this awful prime minister behave the way he has and I'm heart broken that I've had to say no to my baby girl so many times about going out, seeing friends and family. Im ashamed at myself for being so stupid and doing ad I'm told. And I'm just so angry at this man and this awful government for being so disrespect to us all.

I am not a Conservative voter or supporter, and I will never be a Labour supporter, unless they return to a genuine working class party, instead of a party of champagne socialists advocating for mass migration and the rainbow agenda.
Immigration benefits the elite, it does not benefit the working class and never has. The Bank of England did a study and found that immigration stagnated wages, and then we could look into the disproportionate amount of crime these groups commit (the immigrants from outside of Europe)
I don't care to have an immigration debate, it doesn't matter, immigration is not popular among the people so Labour shouldn't be advocating it, even if they could demonstrate it benefiting the economy.
@@danke1150 immigration does benefit large parts of the working class in various ways. It makes stuff cheaper and more available. It particularly benefits the older working class who either own their own home or have a council house, and will need looking after in their old age, and use the NHS a lot. Oddly those are the ones most against it.
It probably not beneficial for young working class without settled accommodation.
Labour can't be the party you want it to be without proportional representation, as they aren't going to get into power like that because the traditional working class is a lot smaller than it used to be, and is still shrinking.

I work in a care home and I have held hands that thought it was their loved ones. It was heartbreaking . I have worked all through and forgot to have a social life not even visiting my own parents. Shame on Boris.
It’s just so sad to know that the same person that asked you to stop ‘living’ was having parties. I was not able to visit my sister before she died of cancer and I was not even able to go to her funeral. The behaviour of this man is heartbreaking. I wish him to go as far away as possible.

I can't say I'm in the labour camp politically, but Keir was on the money with this one, he's got to go. It's long past time. This is a disgrace that should be taught in schools as a lesson to those that seek to serve their country in the highest office possible. After this heartfelt speech and showed Sir Keir to be a good man. I was totally shocked by the Prime Ministers response. It was an uneducated response you say when your on the ropes.
Watching this as a EU citizen gives hope that there still are polititians in the UK who have a spine, decency and a sense of responsibility, polititians that actually can tell right from wrong and chose right over wrong.

Watched this live and it had a profound impact on me. I've been following this scandal with interest over the past few weeks but never really assessed how it impacted and affected me directly until I heard Keir's words yesterday. Last March my dad suffered an accident in the family home that left him in hospital for 3 months in an ICU before he sadly passed away in the June. My family and I were only allowed to see him for 1 hour, every other day and only one person per visit - so that meant I could only see him once every 10 days or so, and without the support of the rest of my family while my dad physically and mentally deteriorated over his 3 month stay. We really appreciated the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford for showing discretion to allow us to visit him as I understand that is more than what other families got. But after hearing Keir speak yesterday, and the weight of his words, it made me frustrated that I was restricted to seeing my dad only once every 10 days for 1 hour, with time slipping away for the both us, while rules and restrictions seemingly didn't apply at no.10. His speech really drew me in and made me saw how what's happened in Westminster over the past few weeks really does matter to everyone. I watched this scandal play out with an almost TV drama interest but now I feel really personally impacted and hurt by how this PM bats and fobs off this country, and laughs in the face of the suggestion he ought to take personal responsibility.

How do we get to the point where a labour leader quotes Margaret Thatcher?
That was my first thought - but then, remember, the audience wasn't us. It was the Conservative MPs who often cited Thatcher, and by doing what he did, Starmer forced the issue, i.e. by pointing out that what the Government are doing are effectively contrary to Thatcher's own philosophy. So, in a way, it was very clever (even though I don't particularly like Starmer).
