  • We weren’t really happy with the sleeping situation during our first episode at the Overlander Project: Adventure Summit in Uwharrie.
So We enlisted the help of Kim’s dad (Darrell) to custom build us a better sleeping and storage solution. He came up with an amazing platform build for our next overland trip through Kentucky and into old Amish country in Ohio!
Hopefully this will give many of you some ideas on how to customize or improve your own sleeping situation in your overlanding rigs so be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!.
Stay tuned for the next episode to see how this new platform and mattress combo worked out for us.

wow this is the best one ive seen. if i do this this is it. barely used any wood barely takes up space barely weighs anything this is perfect i would only add a prop stick to hold the storage open almost like a hood off a car.

Ok I know this video is dang near 2 years old, but I have not seen any update videos. So in case you are looking to change your mattress... we found that a twin size toddler mattress from Ikea fits in the back pretty good. Its a little over 3 inches thick and being a real mattress it is not affected by the heat or cold. We also sleep in the back of our Jeep Jk. I took the back seat out and made a platform so we can store gear under the platform. I put the seat back when we arent camping. Just sharing another point of view in case its helpful for your set up. Thanks for another great video. :-)

Hey thanks so much for the comments you should definitely check out our new platform where we actually use a 6 inch memory foam mattress so it’s like sleeping on a hotel bed. We sleep on top of the refrigerator, kitchen, and all of our other gear so great minds! Check it out ua-cam.com/video/6Ok56ozki9c/v-deo.html

Just an idea to keep those two spacers that sit on top of the seats from sliding around or moving around some double-sided Velcro. Wish he sold these, are awesome!

    • @DownSouth_Adventures

Thats a good idea but honestly they fit so well they rarely move. I think we may be working on a way to sell them in the future.

Since I didn't see any paracord hanging from your tailgate, I'm guessing that you guys still enter the back of your Jeep by using the rear doors, which could be quite a pain in the butt. You need to look into the Jeep JK tailgate hack so you can open your tailgate from inside. It'll make it much easier getting out of your sleeping area.

For us Getting in through the doors is much easier than from the tailgate.

Unortunately no just get a big piece of cardboard and cut it out to fit in and use that as your template for the wood

We don’t have dimensions for this layout but we have a brand-new build that we’re working on now which should be out shortly. Because others have asked as well so we will have some CAD plans for sale in the future.
