  • I react to the unveiling of the Chromatic by‪@ModRetroHub‬
It is an FPGA Based Gameboy Color Clone system for $199 that has a variety of awesome colors and a premium metal shell.
I had some thoughts about where it is in comparison to other ways to play gameboy and gameboy color.

Cool. I would do the same if I was a billionaire, that makes more sense than the whole spaceship and submarine vanity projects. I legit had no idee who he was.

As someone who's been contemplating and making a game that brings me nostalgia this gb clone console seems like a fun idea. Who knows. Maybe I'll make a exclusive for his device.

Well. All of the games published by Chromatic will also work on the FPGBC and Nintendo GameBoy Color and Advance Systems. Have you seen the FPGBC? ua-cam.com/video/BS0IWx4CaJw/v-deo.html

Actually chatted a lot with the creator of Year 2031 before and after my review. It was interesting that he actually had sold way more physical cartridges than he thought he would. ua-cam.com/video/LAwX3kOOuNk/v-deo.htmlsi=FTX-UB105DKmwcOH

I am pretty happy with my analogue pocket and my FPGBC.
I'm pretty curious about their original resolution backlit screen, but I think I'd want to see it in person before I want to pay $200 for it

I love all these GB clones but really I'm wanting a DSi clone more than anything else. I may just pick up one of the Chromatics though honestly...lol funny that I JUST ran across my old copy of Pokemon Crystal.

I am not sure we would see any DSi clones, There is not many mods for the DS or DSi in part because I don't know how we could improve on what Nintendo did. I mean they nailed it.
Check out my videos on the FPGBC. I love mine and it was only $84 ua-cam.com/video/BS0IWx4CaJw/v-deo.html

I pre-ordered inferno orange. It'll be my first handheld I've owned, so it was an easy choice for me. That retro-accurate screen & colour output interests me too. I really like how it was their priority to get it right.

Yeah I'm intrigued by the idea of an LCD screen that is backlit but the original resolution of a Gameboy Color, I wonder if one of the reasons why this is a little bit more pricier than other systems is that they had it customly manufacture that screen.
I do dig the bright retro vibes of the orange one

you and I are very different types of customers it seems. I learned of this quite a while back. I finally decided to buy a Chromatic yesterday.
There is no way I would buy an Analog Pocket. It's not the price- i just would not want that in my house with my game collection.
If the Chromatic had a higher resolution screen, I would not have considered ever buying one.
If the Chromatic had played even GBA games in addition to the GB and GBC games that it does, I would not have considered buying one.
And absolutely, if the Chromatic could play games of other systems such as Super Nintendo or Atari Lynx, or whatever- there is no way in hell that I would have bought it. Not because I don't love Super Nintendo and such, I do, but because the only type of game that I want to play on the Chromatic is Gameboy and Gameboy Color games, period. If I play SNES, I will play on a real super famicom on a CRT, or nothing.
Every decision that Palmer Lucky made for the Chromatic is precisely what it would take to get me to buy one. The only thing that I might have loved more, is if it was not FPGA, and was bonafide original gameboy type hardware- that would have made me even more happy with it.
Anyway, I appreciate you and your video. You seem like a neat guy. But, everything you said about how those other systems are superior are precisely why I would never even let those systems anywhere near my video game collection. Ptewey . Gross. Has nothing to do with price, whatsoever. They could be five dollars, and I still wouldn't buy them. The Chromatic, on the other hand, is welcome in my game collection.
Anyway, I hope i didn't irritate you. We are just different kinds of customers. I realize that there probably are not many people like me who see it this way, but thanks to the fact that Palmer Lucky isn't trying to make money, just do an honorable perfect gameboy, people like me have a chance to get exactly what we would want.
In almost all cases, I would never play on anything else other than original hardware. This is true of all consoles except for two- which are Gameboy and Gameboy Color. This just so happens to be the only consoles that I would prefer a more robust modern way of playing them, but I don't want something that is made for other systems besides gameboy and gameboy color. Essentially, I want it to be as authentic of a gameboy experience as possible, without actually being an original DMG.
There is absolutely no other console that ever existed that I would make this allowance for besides Gameboy and Gameboy Color. Not even GBA. This looks to be the perfect Gameboy.
Anyway, I just wanted to show you that there are apparently some people that this system is made for. Not many, I figure, but it sure is nice to have my minority point of view catered to in a small way. I guess it takes a billionaire that has no interest in making any money with the venture to do it.

Personally I want to wait until the Chromatic has been in the hands of some reviewers.
Make sure you check out my videos on the FPGBC. It's really cool and it's $83. It's 100% compatible with every single Game Boy and Game Boy Color game. I also think putting it together is a lot of fun.

True, I believe if the Chromatic is successful, they will release the Chromatic Advance in the same spirit as the original GBA. And this 2 system combo will far surpass the Analogue Pocket or any other third party option and solidify them as the most authentic substitute for original hardware

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  Місяць тому

@@kaipography well I'm always glad for there to be some competition for fpga systems
Personally, I hope that fpgbc makes a fpga Game Boy Advance, a FPGBA if you will.
The original Game Boy Advance has quite the modding community and a wide selection of really awesome screens and shells and battery mods including no cutting, no solder IPS screens.
Heck, I'd be down for people making fpga other systems.

Just don't ask Palmer Luckey any questions about long-term support for this device, he'll just call you stupid and not actually answer the question.

I respectfully disagree. There actually is a slight grid pattern to the Game Boy screens. It's more pronounced on the pocket and the color..ua-cam.com/video/xoRgwPF0iSI/v-deo.htmlsi=uC61N6uwvNdSyT91

It looks like this may be a vanity project and therefore have the leeway to be a bit looser with the budget. Doesn't seem like Palmer Luckey needs the cash. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmer_Luckey

Well that's cool. I honestly did not know who he was
I'm glad he's making the Game Boy Color of his dream and not really questionable crazy billionaire stuff. I absolutely would want to hang out with this guy. I can't really say that about Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos.
I didn't really get a chance to talk about the launch lineup of Game Boy titles that they're publishing. That's really cool and I'm more likely to buy those than yet another way to play Game Boy

  • @Recoverel

I was at the Pasadena Retro Game Convention today and saw the console in person. The thing is, neither Palmer Luckey and his staff seem to be able to articulate what distinguish this console compared to what options are out there. The staff only said, "We want to make things perfect." Well, modded Gameboy/GBA/Analogue can play GB games just fine. My wife actually saw half of the screen suddenly turned dark right after the staff said, "See, everything is perfect!" The staff took the console away immediately, though he was about to let me try it. Not too reassuring! I want to understand the advantage in this Modretro console so that I can decide whether to get it or not.
