Keith Lockhart conducts BBC Concert Orchestra performing main theme to Star Wars composed by John Williams at the Royal Albert Hall during Film Music Prom 2011.
EVERYTIME this brings a tear to my eye, from the first note i am 5yrs old wide eyed at the cinema in front of a new hope with "mummy n daddy" Im 50 now a patent of two, mummy n dady are long gone, but man this music. Life has been and is great, but i miss those times and that little boy As ABBA once said Thank you for the music
John Williams is a master at creating iconic movie music. Star Wars theme, Indiana Jones theme, Jurassic Park theme, Home Alone theme, and the Harry Potter theme.
As close to the original film score as I've ever heard, even as conducted by Williams himself. John Williams was the master of the march tempo, as exemplified by many of his greatest compositions. Like so many past masters, he instinctively understood their power, and applied them to great effect in motion pictures. I compared Williams' compositions with many of the great film scores featured here on You Tube, and found in them a variety and subtlety of music techniques that eclipsed many of the greatest composers in film history, a true testament to his enormous ability and innate understanding of complex musical theory. He's a true national treasure.
i dont think there is anyone on earth that does not know what this classical piece is. I do think, this belongs in a hall of fame, along side of the other Masters of Classical musics
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..... and this music plays out I am in heaven! stunningly beautiful! perfectly played and crafted by an orchestra that deserves so much more praise than i cannot give!
My favorite piece of John Williams' magnificent body of work...............it holds a special place in my life, as it is the theme to the movie that ignited my lifelong love of movies............I always say that the 10 words that changed my life were: "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away........."
Just as many of us today wonder what it was like when pieces by Beethoven and Strauss were originally premiered, the same will be asked of John Williams and Star Wars. Those of us lucky enough to be there that fateful day in May 1977 will know.
GLORIOUS! I bumped into this page and it managed to lure me away for the whole time!!! On a side note: some production now uses synthesizers as they've come to be pretty. However, there's nothing like a full orchestral production that just brings an EPIC AWESOMENESS like this theme!!!
Whoever said this wasn't great music was gravely mistaken. John Williams is surely one of the great musical geniuses of film scores or indeed any other genre of popular music. Simply wonderful.
Astounding! Only minor criticism is that it's a shame there's no delicious gap right a the end before the last chord when the snare and cymbal continue their roll while the rest of the orchestra drop out before the final sforzando. That gets my goosebumps every time, and JW himself always emphasises it.
I know the main theme is the most well known, but for me the Imperial March from Empire and the rendition in Return of the Jedi when the Emperor arrives at the Death Star are the best.
Just watched the force awakens. I won't spoil it but let me just say with the way it ends I can't wait for the 8th episode in 2017. That was a good cliffhanger! The movie itself was fantastic!!!!!! I did shed a tear at one specific scene... Shattered me inside for 5 minutes. We know the part I'm talking about.
if you do research on the films, the original intention was the have Williams adapt The Planets to the movie itself. Williams decided, and was given permission to write an original that gave the same feel. The scores themselves, in order: 4,5,6,1,2&3, gradually pull away from that effect. It was all done on purpose.
@petealex1612 That's kind of my point. Williams may have been influenced by other composers but Star Wars is still an original composition by him. That's why he holds the copyright.
@archer1949 The BBC Proms (Promenade Concerts) are an annual series of concerts in London. The Last Night of the Proms is different insofar as that, instead of 'high-brow' pieces, the focus is (first half, broadcast on BBC 2) on popular and film music and then (second half, broadcast on BBC 1) on British nationalistic music.

Among our modern movie composers, I simply refer to him as "GOD"........... ;)

It is a protected piece of music in the USA
It's one of the best performances I've ever heard. God bless John Williams the great
What amazes me is that the original movie recording was made by a bunch of musicians he gathered together the night before.
😲 Wow 👏 👏
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..... and this music plays out I am in heaven! stunningly beautiful! perfectly played and crafted by an orchestra that deserves so much more praise than i cannot give!
I love just by playing the first note, the theme is instantly recognisable. One of the most iconic pieces of music.
I've heard this played live several times with the OKC Philharmonic, and I get chills every time!!
I got to play this once... on a very big stage with my school band.. and it still makes me proud today.. Miss my old band days..
Beautiful... Nothing else needs to be said
A terrific rendition. What fantastic musicians they all are.
I love this what an amazing performance. My little canary loves this theme tune too. 😆 Bless him.
Apart from that one little clam in the trumpets, this is one of the best performances of this theme I have ever heard.
Practically flawless. It's like listening to the soundtrack recording.
May the 4th be with you!!!
Hands up all those who got goosebumps!
Cloud Hex LMAO I just posted that!!!!

Wow.
That was the BEST performance I have EVER seen.
Just as many of us today wonder what it was like when pieces by Beethoven and Strauss were originally premiered, the same will be asked of John Williams and Star Wars. Those of us lucky enough to be there that fateful day in May 1977 will know.
Star Wars Music has to be the most influential and best music ever.
GLORIOUS!

Amazing in every way.
Goosebumps every time.
Simply superb !!!
Love it.Takes lots of work.
This is the theme of my life...
Just. So. Beautiful.
Whoever said this wasn't great music was gravely mistaken. John Williams is surely one of the great musical geniuses of film scores or indeed any other genre of popular music. Simply wonderful.
best song ever
loved the intertwining melody lines here. John Williams is good composer on this ground as well as every other ground he crosses :) well done :)
greatest theme song ever
For theme song, this is true. For overall score, I would have to disagree that LOTR has better soundtrack. But to each their own.
Armin Thomas no way
lovelovelove. sounds amazing.
엄청나게 익숙한 노래입니다.스타워즈 대표곡!스타워즈 전시리즈를 다본사람으로서.너무 웅장하고 멋있습니다.
bravo j'adore
The most popular piece of classical music by a country mile - and lets be honest it is a beautiful sound.
It's orchestral film music. Not really classical.
@TheNewComposer you are absolutely right, I noticed that the first time I listened to The Planets!
Shit... I'm not crying...I'm not......really....
Outstanding!! And Keith Lockhart is so freakin' hot!!!!!!! Bravo!!
How amazing this sounds
There is genuinely no better opening movie theme in history than this musical masterpiece
Casi de acuerdo contigo. La obertura de Superman también es sublime!
Well apart from Suoerman and then Raiders then Jaws ... I sense a connection ??
1:42 Final of Mars - The Planets suite by Holst! Nice, Williams
and Gladiator: "Colliseum Scene"
They got it so so so perfectly.

Being a part of such a majestical orchestra should feel heavenly.
me gustaria asistir a un concierto como este es genial
Must be a religious experience to be part of this...
Lol We are mainly atheists here in the UK.
Best statement I've seen for a while
Indeed, the Force is strong with this performance
I am an atheist, and I haven't even seen five minutes of any Star Wars movie. Ever.

Must be played by the original sheets, written for the London Philharmonic Orchestra 1977

not a fan of Star Wars but the theme song always gives me chills
One of the best modern day composers, John Williams. Can imagine the days and days of hard work, putting that together
I know the main theme is the most well known, but for me the Imperial March from Empire and the rendition in Return of the Jedi when the Emperor arrives at the Death Star are the best.
OMG!! THE REAL THING!!
fantastic
Best theme of star wars by John Williams the BBC proms

It's a great theme. It remember me some classicals compositions :) I love classical music.
1:58 reminds me of Holst Mars
I believe Williams was influenced by "Mars" for this theme.

Best theme of the Star Wars Trilogy
@petealex1612 If you're talking about the 20th Century Fox Fanfare, that wasn't composed by Williams. It was composed by Alfred Newman.
The conductor has no stick,
HE USES THE FORCE!!!!!!!
???
Roman Gaming he's using an old Jedi mind trick :D
NICE!!
WOAH BRAVO BRAVO *CLAPS IN HOUSE LOUDLY*
Only part missing is Luke's theme!
