I'm the same age and share your story. It was a childhood defining event. To this day, this score gives me chills. I would wager there is an entire generation of men who's childhood was marked by this film...and of course, Star Wars a year earlier. We were lucky.
The remarkable thing about this theme is the fact that, despite it never having lyrics as such, you can just hear the word "SUPERMAN!" at the beginning . . .

I always tear up when I hear this theme, when it's done right like in this case, not because it reminds me of the tragic end to Christopher Reeve but because of the raw power it contains to move you. Can you imagine what it was like for me, an 11 year old kid, sitting there in the dark watching those titles zoom towards the screen? I wish I could go back in time and watch this movie all over again for the first time to experience that feeling again, or at least sit behind my 11 year old self and enjoy that initial reaction. Good times! (And only one year after Star Wars equally blew my mind).

I remember being a little boy and when those low rumbling bass horns start to blow with the drums at :37 my mind told me to rise up and save the world with my cloth red towel cape. Such a hero’s theme. A child’s imagination is the best.
I *still* get chills hearing this theme. The buildup to the main phrase is just incredible, the woodwinds pairing with the chimes...I could go on and on.
If you close your eyes and listen to this it's just as amazing as watching Supernan at the cinema. Completely epic theme tune played by a fabulous orchestra. Even after all this time it stoll gives me goosebumps.
This is ecstasy to my ears. As I listen to this beautiful masterpiece, I regret giving up on learning how to play a clarinet in the fifth grade. These people definitely stuck to their lessons. These professionals are eons away from playing a screeching, " Mary had a Little Lamb ". I wish I would not have given up.
I don't know you personally, but if I may, it's never too late to start over! If it's something you wish to explore deeper, you can always pick up that clarinet again!
It's downright impossible to sit still listening to this masterpiece. Something happens on both a primitive and a intellectual way. One gets bombarded with the feeling of adventure, love, action, joy... it's bliss. I don't think there are a theme that captures any other character as well as Williams "Superman". The music is the embodiment of the hero. I remember how the room was packed in the cinema in the little town in Sweden in which I lived. I was 11 yo. Halfway through the main titles people started humming the theme, some put their hands up in tune with the music and after Richard Donners name flashed by applause started. But it was nothing compared to the cheers and applause in the end when Superman winked and flied off. It was the first movie I saw at the cinema (aside childrens movies). I was completely overhelmed. This was the benchmark for every movie I've seen since and boy - I thought ever "grown up" movie was as good... but alas. At the school everyone (but the girls for some reason) talked over each other about the movie. All of the original party (seven of us) went to the next showing (and got all the parents to give us money for it) and we had an even bigger blast. Probably the best movie experience of my life... so far. Sidenote: why the hell doesn't movies nowadays have main titles!?

As a young kid with no father in the very early 80s... Superman made me feel safe somehow. Made me think i could be the one to protect the defenseless and the innocent. As a young kid with no father in the very early 80s... Superman made me feel safe somehow. Made me think i could be the one to protect the defenseless and the innocent. And this song would absolutely make my little chest poke out and would make me stand tall. Christopher Reeves is the only person i think of when i hear this Symphony.
