Samsung Dryer Won't Start or Spin - Troubleshooting and Repair Guide

  • In this video I show you how to troubleshoot a Samsung dryer that won't start or spin. There are a few things that can cause this problem with your dryer and you'll need to know how to repair and fix them to get it running again.
The first thing we test is the control board. The motor circuit relay is on the board and sends power through the motor to start the dryer. If the belt switch or thermal fuse is tripped, then it won't start and you can't dry your clothes.

I just discovered this awesome video tonight and wanted to comment on the helpful content and awesome music. Sorry to read Bill died in 2016. Too young, but still helping from the great beyond. Thanks to Bill's family for keeping this video up! 👍👍👍 I never knew you in real life, but RIP Bill, and thank you!

Great video. I've never really done any troubleshooting on appliances, but this made it super easy and gave me the confidence to open up the dryer and see what's going on. I have a newer model than the one in the video, but as soon as I removed the top cover I could see the belt was broken. $20 part that I can replace myself compared to a $150 service call (plus parts). THANKS!

I'm a handy guy but have never worked on a dryer before. When my wife came asking for her hero because the dryer would power up but not start, I dug in. With the help of your videos I was able to disassemble the dryer far enough to determine that the belt had just come off the tensioner and pulley. I easily put it back on and the dryer is back to working great. Thank you for making me look so smart. :)

Our circuit board was different with no obvious ground wire so we were unable to check that portion. Checking the motor directly we found that the resistance was 3.6 ohm. That should have been 1.8 for the starter coil. Turns out, our centrifugal switch was stuck in the 'on' position, allowing the motor to spin, but not get started on it's own. Would never have figured that all out without your video. Thanks so much for saving us hundreds of dollars in repair.

Thank you so much, u gust saved us from throwing away a 6 yr old dryer. My husband used your video as a guide and was able to figure out we had a bad thermal sensor on the blower due to me not cleaning the lint out enough. The sensor had no continuity and we used a pice of wire to bridge the sensor wires and it turned on. Now we just need to figure out where to buy the thermal sensor. Thank you so much!

All of you videos are great Bill. FYI, I picked up a set of bed of nails alligator clips through ATS ($5 a pair) I connect them to my meter leads in tight spots, or rather than removing switches to test continuity, in circuit testing, automotive shorts (with a homemade long test lead) etc. They came on my tone sender for Data/Telephony job. Invaluable when there are hundreds of wires and I just need to identify one or two pair!

After replacing my belt to no avail, I stumbled across this video. I had to disassemble my dryer a few times but it finally works! When my belt came off it loosened the cut off switch wires. The switch had continuity but it was not actually completing the circuit. I had to bend the prongs to get the plug to seat back on all the way.

Thank you so much! I went through your full diagnostic, realized it was the thermal cutoff fuse, follow your other video on how to disassemble everything and put it back together , got a new one but by that time tested the old fuse again and it worked, some bit confused, but I guess testing everything and un plugging everything and replugging everything reset whatever was the problem. So somehow it still works. Thank you again for the great instructional video.

Great video Bill! You explain things very well, you should be an instructor. I'm searching for an answer to my dryer issue. Its a samsung too. It will start up but stops turning after 5-10 seconds. Sometimes it will start moving again but keeps stopping. Most times I need to turn it off to get it to start moving again but never stays running now. Happened all at once, not a progressive issue. Any ideas? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks
EDIT>>>Just disassembled it, there's a faint smell coming from the control board and it clicks off and on when it starts and stops, is that normal? I sure hope you read this and have some insight on this. The part is $146 and can't really spare that going blindly into this. Any help is huuugely appreciated!!
SECOND EDIT>>> After leaving it on for abit I noticed the time ticked down to 1 min in less then 5 mins, it was set on 40 mins. I'm thinking the control board takes care of time too? Looks like a safe bet to my untrained eye anyhow. Can you confirm time is controlled by the control board or is that in the display? Thanks again, sorry for being a pain

I tested this time and the heater was broken physically with no continuity. I purchased a new heater assembly and installed it. After assembly, the dryer does not even turn on (display). I checked all connections and continuity of the heater assembly and all is OK. What could be the problem?

Very good video. I found to be my thermostat that was open.
Is this caused by overheating? If yes possibly there is another cause. Like a shorten resistance or something. It could also be the failure of the thermostat as well. Anyway I saw a lot of people on Amazon complaining about changing it and after the first load it burns again, they possibly have another source of problem. Can you comment?
