Samsung Dryer Won't Start or Spin - Troubleshooting and Repair Guide

- In this video I show you how to troubleshoot a Samsung dryer that won't start or spin. There are a few things that can cause this problem with your dryer and you'll need to know how to repair and fix them to get it running again.
The first thing we test is the control board. The motor circuit relay is on the board and sends power through the motor to start the dryer. If the belt switch or thermal fuse is tripped, then it won't start and you can't dry your clothes.

I just discovered this awesome video tonight and wanted to comment on the helpful content and awesome music. Sorry to read Bill died in 2016. Too young, but still helping from the great beyond. Thanks to Bill's family for keeping this video up! 👍👍👍 I never knew you in real life, but RIP Bill, and thank you!
10 seconds into this and I am thinking, new dryer 😃 good video though
Same lol
On point lol
Facts tore mine apart and thought damn over my head
Hahahaha
My son texted me this video after his dryer stopped working. I’ve got him trained now to search UA-cam before he calls me.
Great content exceptionally well done. Straight to the point and eliminates the stuff you don’t need to see. I’m subscribed.
Very professional, right to the point. No babbling nonsense. Very concise. Best DYI video I have ever watched.
Thank you. I’ve had this dryer for eight years and it has went down on me 3 times and all 3 times the part never cost over 30$ and repairs never took more than an hour. So grateful for guys like you who put the time and effort to get us diy guys going.
Thanks for mens like you who know how to save money! But when you have a husband that always think to replace and wasting so much money... What you can do🤦🏽♀️??!! I don't know how to do that either 😢
@@cluisap Then learn to do it yourself if this is important to you. Why is it your husbands duty?

Same here. This is the 3rd time it has gone down. 1st belt, 2nd heating element, now the belt again. Great Video!
Bill, you make very clear and concise diy videos! I recently had a Samsung dryer quit on me and needed help troubleshoot. For someone like me with decent mechanical yet limited electrical/electronic skills your videos are very helpful! Please keep up the good work! 🤓
Thank you for this video, I had called Samsung. They told us sounded like the belt. We followed your video. You saved us over $200+ dollars.
Thanks Bill! Your video helped me find the problem! In my case it was a bad thermal cut off, cost me 20 bucks to get back up and running. I really appreciate you taking the time and making this so much easier for all of us!
Great video. I've never really done any troubleshooting on appliances, but this made it super easy and gave me the confidence to open up the dryer and see what's going on. I have a newer model than the one in the video, but as soon as I removed the top cover I could see the belt was broken. $20 part that I can replace myself compared to a $150 service call (plus parts). THANKS!
I want to thank you for such an amazing video. You saved me and my husband from needing to replace our dryer tonight. We used this video and the how to replace a belt video to troubleshoot our system. We fixed the dryer without even needing additional parts. Thank you so much.
Brilliant video, clear content, well edited. I wish my videos were this good. Thanks for taking your time make a difference.
Bill, thank you, you are the man. Your video showed me how to get through the disassembly and troubleshooting, which made it so much easier for me to isolate the problem part. I bought the new part for $8 and the dryer is working like new.
Thank you for a professional explanation on how to troubleshoot basic components. My thermal limit was open. Found some chunks of lint obstructing the wheel. Very grateful for saving my family money during this time.
I hate, hate, hate my dryer at this point, but after the third failure in the past 2 years, at least I know now to find "Bill Newberry dryer wont start" on UA-cam. Dude, these videos have been invaluable. Thank you so much for putting them together and making them available!
Thank you. I feel that I can at least troubleshoot what might be going on with my dryer if not actually able to repair on my own. Your step-by-step, detailed, rational and drama-free presentation was very much appreciated!
I'm a handy guy but have never worked on a dryer before. When my wife came asking for her hero because the dryer would power up but not start, I dug in. With the help of your videos I was able to disassemble the dryer far enough to determine that the belt had just come off the tensioner and pulley. I easily put it back on and the dryer is back to working great. Thank you for making me look so smart. :)
Our circuit board was different with no obvious ground wire so we were unable to check that portion. Checking the motor directly we found that the resistance was 3.6 ohm. That should have been 1.8 for the starter coil. Turns out, our centrifugal switch was stuck in the 'on' position, allowing the motor to spin, but not get started on it's own. Would never have figured that all out without your video. Thanks so much for saving us hundreds of dollars in repair.
Awesome sauce man your video was direct to the point without silly comments and access rhetoric. One of the best informational videos I have ever seen thank you
Thank you for an informative and helpful video. My Samsung dryer failed twice and each time I was able to follow your instructions and fix it myself. First was the belt last May and then it was the thermal fuse this week. Both were less than $10 in parts and easy to repair after following your instructions.
Hey my man! Excellent video! My thermal fuse was bad. I followed your video step by step. Tested the thermal fuse as bad... Replaced it. Paid 6.07 at Amazon. I owe you. Keep up the good work!
Thx for doing this video. You just saved my family a bunch of time, money and wet laundry on a Sunday night. Thx!
Thank you so much, u gust saved us from throwing away a 6 yr old dryer. My husband used your video as a guide and was able to figure out we had a bad thermal sensor on the blower due to me not cleaning the lint out enough. The sensor had no continuity and we used a pice of wire to bridge the sensor wires and it turned on. Now we just need to figure out where to buy the thermal sensor. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video Bill! I was able to use your belt replacement link to fix mine. Discovered my belt was loos when I took the top off and the only problem turned out to be the pulley spring came off. Put it back on and used the video to guide me to get the belt back on.
All of you videos are great Bill. FYI, I picked up a set of bed of nails alligator clips through ATS ($5 a pair) I connect them to my meter leads in tight spots, or rather than removing switches to test continuity, in circuit testing, automotive shorts (with a homemade long test lead) etc. They came on my tone sender for Data/Telephony job. Invaluable when there are hundreds of wires and I just need to identify one or two pair!
You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you kindly.
Bill I changed my dryer belt while watching your video. Thank you so much for your amazing work 🙏
Thank you for saving us money. Easy to follow to change my belt, even though not quite the model.
Wow!!
Thank You!! I just checked My and it’s the Same that you working on it and the Belt was Broken, Thanks So Much for helping People with needs and low income like me that can’t afford a technician to do this Repairs! God Bless You Always for you Videos! David from Boston!!🙏🏼
Thank you. You saved our grandparents $1000 for a new dryer. Great video!
Thanks for posting this amazing video. It helped me so much. I was able to rule out all the electrical problems with the machine and finally in a moment of desperation checked the exhaust motor and found a sock jammed in there. I guess the myth is true...dryers DO eat socks, mine just happened to choke on this one! Thanks again for your help!
Ha!!
Great video, clear to the point with excellent visuals. I thank you for not including a long intro that means nothing. I salute you sir,
Thank you Mr Bill, You were a life saver!!! My wife thanks you too!! I thought i was going to have to take my brand new dryer back to lowes i got a great deal on but it was an easy fix thanks to your guidance!!!
Hi Mr.Newberry.. Your videos are very helpful for technicians on the field...
Make my life easy instead to pull the documents or fastrack...
Thank you very much !!
thanks man. was able to see that the idler pulley was broke and replace it after watching your video. saved me from replacing my dryer or calling it a service tech for my year and a half old dryer
After replacing my belt to no avail, I stumbled across this video. I had to disassemble my dryer a few times but it finally works! When my belt came off it loosened the cut off switch wires. The switch had continuity but it was not actually completing the circuit. I had to bend the prongs to get the plug to seat back on all the way.
Great video Bill! That is the smoothest I've ever seen a blower wheel come off...ever. Movie magic.
+Andy Fulenchek No movie magic, lol it actually came off that easy! I was surprised too. There was no removal and re-install to make it look easy on that one.
Awesome how-to. Followed the steps and found a defective thermal cutoff.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !!!!!
Bill, thanks to you I was able to troubleshoot and repair my Samsung dryer. Thank you!
great video bill love to see your videos especially on newer appliances thank you learn a lot watching you
Thank you so much! I went through your full diagnostic, realized it was the thermal cutoff fuse, follow your other video on how to disassemble everything and put it back together , got a new one but by that time tested the old fuse again and it worked, some bit confused, but I guess testing everything and un plugging everything and replugging everything reset whatever was the problem. So somehow it still works. Thank you again for the great instructional video.
Brian Paris Did your dryer had problem that turn on but not spin? Where did you buy the fuse? Thanks
Awesome video. Ty. I really appreciate the music that calmed my rage at my non working dryer
It is a vibe
Great video, had to replace my pulley but your video gave me some good insight into where and how. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing the video of your repairs to your product. I also have a Samsung front loader washer and Samsung dryers since purchasing them brand new in 2014. I also find them very easy to work on. Thank you again.
Great video! Thank you for showing how to test the motor starter coil. After watching this, I was able to determine that the starter coil in my motor was the problem! Thanks, again!
Awesome video, thanks so much! I helped me fix my dryer (belt and pulley) with the great step by step instructions. You rock dude!
Long after he has passed away, he still helps countless people. Bill should be canonized to a saint.
Thanks for the great video. It helped me figure out the belt is broke and trips the safety switch.
Thanks for the video! Great help! I'm following your videos now.
This video is old but still helpful today. Helped me solve my issue with dryer not spinning. Thermo cut switch.
We fixed our dryer thanks to you! Appreciate it!
Thank you so much for this video! Everything was clear and easy to understand. I was very excited that I was able to do this myself. Thanx!
I subscribed because you're calm demeanor plus I learned something new and I took notes thank you
Thank you for this video! You saved me a ton of money & hassle!
Clear, concise, to the point, excellent video.
Great video man I'm going to troubleshoot my dryer this weekend. I'm an elevator mechanic so I know how to troubleshoot and u made it easy.
Thanks to this video I found out right away my dryer's belt was snapped. Thank you!!
Found my belt broken on my dv409agw, this guy helped my :) thanks friend!
What's the part # for a new belt?
Fixed out dryer after we tried several fixes first. Thank you Sir!
If I could give you $20 I would. This video saved me today. Not exactly the year dryer I have but almost the same components.
great video im a spa repair man 30 years i found high limit switch bad at blower tube need to get this part next
Bill, thank you for your excellent video. At least, I should have some more pictures before calling a technician to fix my dryer.
Hey Graham I enjoyed your video very much Bill on the motor and the testing seems like I had a problem with the discharge hose overheating and caused the dryer to cut off in 10 minutes but I watched all the videos on your test and it was real great thank you very much for your expertise will probably use you in the future God bless and goodbye
Thanks for the video. I was a bit intimidated as I started to take the dryer apart, but thanks to you found out it was the thermal cut-off switch. An inexpensive repair that hopefully will keep our dryer running for a few more years!
Thank you. I worked on a slightly different model dryer but was able to follow your video and fixed it for $12. Turns out my blower housing thermostat went bad.
Excellent job Bill! Very professional, clear and straight to the point.
awesome Bill ! YOU MAKE UA-cam THE BEST THING FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME.......:)
Great video. Very helpful content and excellent music choice!!
Awesome guidance! Using my multimeter, I followed this video, plus the disassembly video, and then the reset the thermostat / thermal cutoff one, and fixed my dryer, even without parts! Thanks Bill Newberry!
Thank You Bill ….. You saved me big time. I subscribed.
Hi this video was really amazing to help.troubleshoot step by step.
Quick question, When I connect on terminal 5 and 4 on motor, I get about 4ohms during both with or without centrifugal switch pressed. Does that mean it's the motor? I don't see the 1.9ohm winding when I release it.
Incredible video. My belt tensioner switch was bad, just needed to be taken apart and blown out. So shocked that there is not an error code for this, just a blinking shirt icon. Poorly made Kenmore crap
Thanks for the help Bill. My Dryer works fine now but a problem I'm having now that has been on going. When I start dryer the lights on control panel flash and whine is this a problem with the control board?
Thank you for this video! Our dryer was humming, but not spinning. We took the top off to run a few diagnostics, then tried spinning the drum manually (from the top) before starting. The dryer kept going, so we will be ordering a new capacitor. [It's still working in the meantime, but we will order that part just in case.]
Did you find out what it was?
This is my problem... The hum and not spinning
thank you so much for this video it literally cleared up a bunch of places where on I was stuck on appliance repair in general
Wonderful video. I do not have this exact model, but I went through these tests with the exception of the first test of the overall resistance since the board is different. When I tested the motor I got 0 resistance across the windings, does this mean the motor has failed?
Hey Bill, I've spent all day watching this video (great by the way) and trouble shooting as my Dyer will not start. The Control Board test (test 1) didn't work, however the belt switch, motor, and thermal cut off all are fine. Could it be the control board? G
Bill Thank you very much you made my life easy :)
Thanks great videos...I have a DV210 Samsung stack elec. Dryer that stopped working there are no led lights, sometime parts of letter or number and a small hum at times. The light in dryer works but will do nothing else. It has 220 coming into it, all thermo fuses good. I am assuming it is the main or front display control board..... replaced front display board and there was not change. Should I replace the main board. Any suggestion appreciated.
Hi Bil, thanks for the video. Does this board connected to the thermistor and controling the power to the heating element? samsung dryer keeps burning the termal fuses and I think it is the board. main board and a display board in these dryers
Great information, I just subscribed man.
Good video! Thank you for making this.
Very informative easy to understand thank you so much..
These videos are pretty good. Thank you sir
Thanks for the video, made me save time and money
Hi Bill, how do you test a pcb in the samsung dryer? I saw in this video that you check between the brown wire and the yellow wire. What happen if the UI won't light up and you touch the front panel and nothing happen. can you help me with this?
Thanks,your help as invaluable
Impressive video! Thank you.
Very well done understanding with no problem thank you
I’m about to pick up a $800 dryer for $20. Person says it kicks on and then off about 2 minutes later. I’m bout to get that and fix it. Thanks Bill I watch a lot of your stuff. HVAC Maintenance Tech at a large apartment complex
Very well done video. Thanks.
Great video!
Top notch!
Now, just need to apply this knowledge. Thank you
Very smooth and informative video... Also, I'm jamming to these reggae vibes man!! Send me the playlist!!
Great video & infor, thanks! btw, wtf is that box on ur wall? Never seen a set up like that before. What is it doing?
Great video Bill! You explain things very well, you should be an instructor. I'm searching for an answer to my dryer issue. Its a samsung too. It will start up but stops turning after 5-10 seconds. Sometimes it will start moving again but keeps stopping. Most times I need to turn it off to get it to start moving again but never stays running now. Happened all at once, not a progressive issue. Any ideas? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks
EDIT>>>Just disassembled it, there's a faint smell coming from the control board and it clicks off and on when it starts and stops, is that normal? I sure hope you read this and have some insight on this. The part is $146 and can't really spare that going blindly into this. Any help is huuugely appreciated!!
SECOND EDIT>>> After leaving it on for abit I noticed the time ticked down to 1 min in less then 5 mins, it was set on 40 mins. I'm thinking the control board takes care of time too? Looks like a safe bet to my untrained eye anyhow. Can you confirm time is controlled by the control board or is that in the display? Thanks again, sorry for being a pain
Great video Bill and Semper Fi
Hi Bill, great instruction video. I started at the board, and I got a OL reading, I then tested everything shown in the video and all tested ok. when I test the motor it shows a number of 2.5 & when I test the motor switch it shows 4.2, its not the same as your reading but is it bad?
Hi Chris. Not sure if you’ll see this but I am having the same issue with my dryer. OL at the board for the complete circuit, but each component testing on. Did you ever get a resolution that you can share?
Thank you Bill. My dryer stopped heating. This had happened once before and I had solved it with a new heater assembly at that time. I tested this time and the heater was broken physically with no continuity. I purchased a new heater assembly and installed it. After assembly, the dryer does not even turn on (display). I checked all connections and continuity of the heater assembly and all is OK. What could be the problem?
Very good video. I found to be my thermostat that was open.
Is this caused by overheating? If yes possibly there is another cause. Like a shorten resistance or something. It could also be the failure of the thermostat as well. Anyway I saw a lot of people on Amazon complaining about changing it and after the first load it burns again, they possibly have another source of problem. Can you comment?
excellent video!!!!!
