Guys, having watched all the episodes up to this point, I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite d&d shows, but not for the reason you might think. Let me explain. If anyone reading this is interested in getting into d&d or knows anyone who’s interested, please don’t point them to one of the mainstream series. Send them to a series like this first. This series is representative of what a d&d game should be. It’s one thing for a series to have flashy intros, slick layouts, and movie-quality production, but at the end of the day, that isn’t really what d&d’s about. It’s about a group of everyday people getting together, playing their own way, and having fun throughout the entire experience. Too many people who have seen only mainstream d&d shows get upset or frustrated that their own experiences aren’t like that of the mainstream shows or they feel like their sessions aren’t up to the standards mainstream shows set. I think the Dungeon Dudes and their friends laugh together and seem to enjoy themselves overall more than any other show I’ve seen or listened to, and it’s because they’re really just playing for themselves, not trying to put on a show. The fact we’re watching them and also having fun is just icing on the cake. Hope this post made sense and someone gains something from my little spiel. And lastly, thank you, Dungeon Dudes, for your continued efforts and for bringing enjoyment to us all!
Yeah I saw a video on this same topic but with specifically Critical Role as the central focus cuz while the show is indeed an spectacle of talent and rp well not everyone is a professional voice actor able to seamlessly transform into the character.
I agree. And would like to promote Miniwargaming who also have some great rpg shows. Their campaigns are shorter and easy to get in to. Their second season of D&D Heroes of Harinburg is running now.
@@devin5201 I can understand the idea that most home games won't play out the same way Critical Role does but it's pretty dishonest and flat out wrong to act like Critical Role is a big production where the players aren't enjoying themselves and are just putting on a show. Hehe, yeah. From a power-gamer point of view, a cleric, or maybe even a well-played/built-druid, would make this group really unstoppable... if a bit more cliche and "on-brand", trophe for D&D-groups. Heck, even a Swiss Army Knife, off-healer/blaster or something like a Bard, Artificer, Paladin, Warlock, or whatever other fancy newish sub-class-tricked-out character could bring that versatility & healing to make this small group more of a standard-4-PC, 5e-powerhouse-party for sure. However, it might be just as interesting, perhaps more-so, to see them running it the way they are [instead of doing it more 'by the book', in relative safety of having a "well balanced party composition"]. Having 4 players instead of 3 though also might shift the entire campaign emphasis on spending more time stomping enemies quickly in combat rather than doing more roleplaying/exploration/social (non-combat) stuff that smaller groups tend to spend a bit more time doing. I have been systematically watching all your videos. I love that I can now watch you guys play out all the things discussed in your videos. You guys rock!
I know I'm super late to the party, but this is super interesting. As someone who never played DnD I had no idea that it was more like interactive group storytelling. I like that much more than the mental image I had of the game :)
I'm so glad I found this video. I didn't finish the series years ago, and unfortunately didn't subscribe at the time so I've been spending all day trying to find this one D&D campaign uploaded by a channel whose name I couldn't for the life of me remember. Literally typed in "D&D Session" and started scrolling. Won't be making those mistakes again. Subbed and belled.
A few common questions we got during the stream: *When will video on demand be available?* Video-on-demand episodes will be available publicly the following Friday after the livestream. *What level are the characters?* The characters started at 3rd level. *How were ability scores generated?* We used an array of 17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 8, plus racial modifiers. Some of the characters had small tweaks to tertiary stats to better represent how they plan to roleplay the character. *Who did the art?* Each player drew their own character art. Kelly and Jill drew the artwork for the opening. *Who did the opening narration?* That was our good friend Hundred Year's Boar. Check out his UA-cam channel! *Where did you source the music?* The music and ambience is by Tabletop Audio. You can find their original, 10 minute ambiences and music for your games and stories at tabletopaudio.com/ *Where was the third camera?* We didn't have a camera on our Dwarven Forge setup tonight. We record our regular episodes using DSLR cameras, which require additional hardware to use for live streaming. Instead, we're using two Logitech C920 webcams to record the live stream. In future episodes we will have a third C920 camera in place and we're confident our stream setup will support it. The video in the first episode was a bit over-exposed as we forgot to disable the autofocus on the C920s. We'll correct that for future episodes as well.
Dungeon Dudes about the shards, if they're from the meteor. How do you justify the statement by River that they can't be cracked, forged or cut but they're all pieces of the meteor assumedly? Short of each "gem" only ever being the size it is... doesn't make much sense given the general way precious gems like diamonds work so if it's pressured magic then it should be just as viable an option as for normal gems. The way they work makes it seem like they're living things with a sort of plant membrane but if that's the case they should be able to be grown larger or amplified in strength. I hand it to your group you made an interesting material here but it doesn't make much sense outside of the "it's magic" justification which personally is never satisfying.
@Matthew great comment! Delerium is indeed a magical material, and there's much more to it than "it's magic"... but these are secrets yet to be revealed! You're on the right track with your thinking though...
So, there are obviously D&D streams with higher production quality, a larger number of players, etc. But to your guys' credit I'm 10 minutes in, and I can feel that bubbling of excitement in my chest. I'm really enjoying this.
2:07:00 the player gets a critical strike and gets 6 damage on a 2d10 roll. It just doesn’t feel special like a critical strike should be, especially when the next player immediately does maximum damage on a plain ol’ regular attack and kills the Giant Rat. I recommend using a house rule for crits that I have found works very well. If a player gets a critical strike; allow them to do maximum normal damage and the roll once for extra damage. It guarantees that the player always gets to deal a massive blow. Nothing is worse than getting a critical strike and then rolling two 1’s.
Such a pleasant experience to watch this. It's immersive without getting too crazy, it's believable, and it's genuine. I can see the joy coming off of you all as you get through the story. You gained a new sub and, while I'm almost 3 years late, I'm going to try and catch up, hahah. Thank you for your amazing content! :)
Loved watching this, just hearing the description of Drakkenheim reminded me of Tristram from Diablo with the fallen star causing vile monsters plaguing the old ruins
This is brilliant... Haven't played DnD for almost 10 years now but watching you reminds me of so much fun... I guess I need to buy the books of the 5th edition now and find a new group... You are amazing... Thanks for the fun...
Yeah you should be able to find plenty of people with a copy of various books they can let you borrow (digital or otherwise). I would especially be wary of spending cash on it now what with the new changes coming soon potentially and the industry and economy in general being so chaotic... those big hardbacks are a fairly big investment and honestly they're laid out pretty terribly even compared to the older versions which may have not been written as well as 5e, but at least you could find things in them (spells etc).
I adore your descriptions for Drakkenheim and look forward to catching up on this series. Seriously. Some of the world-building and magical effects are fantastic and I'm stealing ALL of it.
Hmm im seeing mordheim in this... Rat people check, Glowing stone that is very valuable so you want even shards and fragments, check said shards make things sick and mutate check Im looking forward to this
This was a blast, guys. Excellent description, Monty. Well played for the rest of you. After all, if you don't horribly traumatize an NPC, did you even play D&D?
Became a patron as a thank you for your amazing 5e guides on this channel, but am so glad to be able to indulge in this campaign and get my D&D fix during this tragic quarantine. Thank you for all the work and creativity!
I know I am late to the party but I loved this. Especially the character sheets with stats, so many of the other DnD playthroughs don't show that, and that's usually my first question.
Kelly, you could have webbed. Exchange of sorcery points and spell slots works both ways. You can burn a 1st level spell slot to get one sorcery point back(one would be lost in this case) to have 3 and then burn the 3 points to get a second level slot back.
I was with Pluto on this one the whole time. They were on a clandestine mission, which they accomplished. They are so close to completion and Veo/Sebastian are jeopardizing the mission. AMAZING first episode you all! All of you are clearly having fun and none of this seems forced. Add one sub to your total please. I wish the best for you guys and thank you for all the laughs. 😁 Post Script, Thank you Kyle, Clayton, Chris, tabletop audio, 100 years boar, and dwarven forge.
I loved the pace, and I kinda liked the balance of funny moments and the creepy and mysterious scenario. Good video, I'm wanting to see more, and I'll.
I've been on a dungeon dudes binge, but jeez, this dming is incredible. I've definitely picked up some stuff and some ideas. Most of the time I feel like I could be in the game. Great description and a great setting so far
What a great video. I tried listening to critical role and lastes maybe 20 minutes, before writing off the idea of listening to d&d. Then i gave this a shot. I finished this video in a day and is already on my way to episode 2 :). This way of doing d&d show apperently really speaks to me. Great work!
Rewatching this and amazed by the rewatching value. Gods this is nostalgic. Brings me back to the first biggest inspirations to make my own worlds in DnD
I see Kelly was not lying about his propensity for fire spells. Scorching Ray and Burning Hands right off the bat, followed by Fire bolt. I've watched your other videos and just now watching you guys play. I love it. Thanks.
Very late to the ball here (apparently 9 months late), but yes! I literally came from their Wizard guide video where Kelly mentions his love for fire spells, to this one, and thought of the same. :P
This series is amazing! How did I miss this for so long? I am on Ep 15 and am hooked! Love the role playing, and Monty’s huge preparation is so appreciated... On to the next chapter!
I'm starting to rewatch the series. I got the Dungeons and Sebastians books for Christmas. This is show as well as the Dungeon Dude's channel helped get me through COVID and got me into DND. Thank you, Monty, Kelly, Jill, Joe, and Kyle.
Now rewatching the series with my kids. So crazy to see how far you have all come. Congratulations on your newest kickstarter Monsters of Drakkenheim I hope you clear $2mill with this one.
I found you guys a few days ago, and i have seen so mutch of your regular videos already. But this episode here is just pure awesomeness. You guys have definitovly gotten yourself a regular viewer with this. I would say that among all the dnd campaigns on youtube you guys are up there with critical role. And drakenheim seems so interesting. Giving me a real dark souls/bloodborne vibe. AWESOME
Seriously, I can't even begin to describe how much I love this show! If you're looking for a DnD-liveplay to watch, this is the one! I promise you, you won't regret it. It's a mystery to me why the whole internet isn't filled with fan art at this point.
I found your channel for your great 5th ed explications. I'm stoked to see you guys start this. I watch a couple other campaigns online...namely....THE online DnD game online. Its funs to see more games going online to bring us along. THANKS!
Nice! That was a great run and atmosphere, and the characters played off each other in fun ways. Good A-V production qualities too. I like seeing a small party run -- it's so intimate and there's more time for everyone to get in their dialogues and witty banter. It will be interesting to see how the party gets along until someone can learn a healing spell... oof, tough way to start! Thank you for sharing your fun with us, and I'm looking forward to future episodes :)
Rewatching this for the second time, and wow have they significantly improved production quality! I love seeing these smaller roots that have flourished for these incredibly deserved people. Love all of you and hope to continue watching your content for many years to come!
Awesome to see where it all began. I’m three sessions into DMing a Campaign using much of the Drakkenheim setting rules. Except in my Old World the contamination is everywhere except for their mountain monestary and they are running missions down into the ‘haze’ wastelands beneath.

I look forward to many more episodes. Do you all have a Patreon for this or did I just miss it?
Thank you!
We do indeed have a Patreon: www.patreon.com/dungeon_dudes
@Jennie Needham So are Pluto, Veo, and Sebastian! I wonder if they'll find out?
Well said
Finally! A chance to watch you play! This is a very valuable learning opportunity for both players and DMs. Keep these coming! Thank you!!!
“I didn’t practice light magic because I can see in the dark.”
Weird flex, but okay.
exactly what a disciple of shadow would say
I have been systematically watching all your videos. I love that I can now watch you guys play out all the things discussed in your videos. You guys rock!
What he said. Same for me.
Nothing like beating a dead horse!
Hilarious. Thanks for showing this - definitely helpful to see and love the artwork done to enhance the experience
I know I'm super late to the party, but this is super interesting. As someone who never played DnD I had no idea that it was more like interactive group storytelling. I like that much more than the mental image I had of the game :)
That opener was fire, gang. Nice work, Jill, Kelly and voice-over guy.
Also, have you three maybe considered, Veo and the PlutoCrowes?
This is the best dnd play I've watched thus far. Good work folks. Really enjoyable and loose without ever losing the sense of peril
A few common questions we got during the stream:
*When will video on demand be available?*
Video-on-demand episodes will be available publicly the following Friday after the livestream.
*What level are the characters?*
The characters started at 3rd level.
*How were ability scores generated?*
We used an array of 17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 8, plus racial modifiers. Some of the characters had small tweaks to tertiary stats to better represent how they plan to roleplay the character.
*Who did the art?*
Each player drew their own character art. Kelly and Jill drew the artwork for the opening.
*Who did the opening narration?*
That was our good friend Hundred Year's Boar. Check out his UA-cam channel!
*Where did you source the music?*
The music and ambience is by Tabletop Audio. You can find their original, 10 minute ambiences and music for your games and stories at tabletopaudio.com/
*Where was the third camera?*
We didn't have a camera on our Dwarven Forge setup tonight. We'll correct that for future episodes as well.
fantastic! also the light is way strong!
Yes, it was a last-minute mistake with the camera settings. We'll have it fixed for future episodes.
This is great thank you guys so much good luck with the adventure.
Finally found time to start this Series. Im pretty hyped after the first 2 Hours. Cant believe there is still 45 Episodes for me to watch :D
This reminds me of the humble beginnings of Critical Role Campaign 1
So, there are obviously D&D streams with higher production quality, a larger number of players, etc. But to your guys' credit I'm 10 minutes in, and I can feel that bubbling of excitement in my chest. I'm really enjoying this.
I agree I really like this one
That was so good. My son recommended this channel and this campaign so I decided to watch. I just loved it. And you are Canadians, yay!
"he's like a young Gaston"... So he eats 4 dozen eggs to help him get large?
And when he is grown, he'll eat five dozen eggs; he'll be roughly the size of a barge.
Loved watching this, just hearing the description of Drakkenheim reminded me of Tristram from Diablo with the fallen star causing vile monsters plaguing the old ruins
Veo falling down but still managing to shoot the last fleeing rat from prone at the last moment == awesome
Prince of Caspia? Somebody is a C.S. Lewis fan.
Saw the intro video, saw Jills hat. I know who's playing the Tabaxi.
Its always a girl playing the cat-person.
+F Huber I actually have a friend that's a guy and he plays a Tabaxi Druid
I play a tabaxi rogue-fighter
I want that hat
This is brilliant... Haven't played DnD for almost 10 years now but watching you reminds me of so much fun... I guess I need to buy the books of the 5th edition now and find a new group... You are amazing... Thanks for the fun...
Only $600
so did you do this?
@@Chance57 Or you can just download all of the basic ones from the internet for free.
@@413benmc actuality, yes. In the end I found an online group like 1.5 years ago...
Alright 5 years after this started I am going to start this. Hopefully my journey is nice and long and enjoyable!
Veo killed this episode, well done Jill, also nice RP!!
Isn't Monty's laugh at 6:11 the most pure and infectious in the world?
I'm starting the Drakkenheim saga. Enjoying it a lot so far!
Wow! I've been craving for more DnD to watch and you have a nice vibe, amazing to see where this is going! Everyone of you is so likeable
This episode is the intro of the RAT PRINCE! YES YES YES! So epic! Well done all of you!
I adore your descriptions for Drakkenheim and look forward to catching up on this series. Seriously. Some of the world-building and magical effects are fantastic and I'm stealing ALL of it.
I recently discovered dungeons and dragons and I love it already. You’re videos get me more into it every time! Keep up the great work.
Hmm im seeing mordheim in this...
Rat people check,
Glowing stone that is very valuable so you want even shards and fragments, check
said shards make things sick and mutate check
Im looking forward to this
Warp stone? Yes-yes!
This was honestly very enjoyable. Immediately and players and characters and the DM keeps everything moving and very interesting. Kudos all!
congratulations for your first adventure video, which are many more!!!
This was a blast, guys. Excellent description, Monty. Well played for the rest of you. After all, if you don't horribly traumatize an NPC, did you even play D&D?
I blew up half of a town last week! All hail the fiend warlock!!!
In my first ever session, I put an old farmer in a coma by accident. To make it up to him, my party accidentally ruined his crop fields forever
Became a patron as a thank you for your amazing 5e guides on this channel, but am so glad to be able to indulge in this campaign and get my D&D fix during this tragic quarantine. Thank you for all the work and creativity!
All of you guys are amazing. I can't wait till the next episode!
I know I am late to the party but I loved this. Especially the character sheets with stats, so many of the other DnD playthroughs don't show that, and that's usually my first question.
Omg Veo said “dusa grada “ ( soul of the city) . I’m Serbian/Croatian so that’s really cool to hear. She pronounced it really well too .
Kelly, you could have webbed. Exchange of sorcery points and spell slots works both ways. You can burn a 1st level spell slot to get one sorcery point back(one would be lost in this case) to have 3 and then burn the 3 points to get a second level slot back.
Oh man!!!! Yup! First time sorcerer lol.
To be fair the situation went well with the darkness. Everyone survived. You even got a potential group name out of it.
Except that you only get one bonus action per turn, so it’s a burn OR convert on that bonus action.
@@michaelburris8954 But they had plenty of time prior to the fight to do this.
Great job guys! Loved all of it. Awesome artwork Jill
Doing a rewatch of these...the difference is night and day on visual quality, well done!
I think it would be nice if you had the character names in brackets or something beneath their names, otherwise zero complaints, amazing job, thanks!
I just had to come back and watch the first episode again after watching ep.52. You guys really have come a long way. Congratulations on your success.
glad I could catch this live! looking forward to the next one.
The Legend of the Three Ghosts of The Dungeons of Drakkenheim!!!
I'm starting to rewatch the series. I got the Dungeons and Sebastians books for Christmas. This is show as well as the Dungeon Dude's channel helped get me through COVID and got me into DND. Thank you, Monty, Kelly, Jill, Joe, and Kyle.
That is awesome! We are so glad you enjoyed the content, and we are excited you picked up our books!
This game is absolutely amazing, but I especially love the character art, and Jill's hat.
AWESOME
Thank you so much! We are so excited to see where this campaign goes!
Coming back to this after all the years to review the Rats Nest for my current Drakkenheim campaign! Need advice from the master himself.
The 'Demolition Man' reference was made all the better because I saw it just a couple of days ago 😂 Rat burger scene still fresh in mind 🤣
Seriously, I can't even begin to describe how much I love this show! If you're looking for a DnD-liveplay to watch, this is the one! I promise you, you won't regret it. It's a mystery to me why the whole internet isn't filled with fan art at this point.
I love the atmosphere Monty creates.
Thank you so much for everything related to this. Drakkenheim has become easily my favorite campaign setting in 5e.
I found your channel for your great 5th ed explications. I'm stoked to see you guys start this.
I watch a couple other campaigns online...namely....THE online DnD game online. Its funs to see more games going online to bring us along. THANKS!
Love it, very Mordeheim kind of city with they warpstone/wydstone and a meteor!
I'm so glad you guys are uploading this here! Just so happens my EnD night falls on the same night as your live stream, so this is perfect! 😉
Awesome to see where it all began. I’m three sessions into DMing a Campaign using much of the Drakkenheim setting rules. Except in my Old World the contamination is everywhere except for their mountain monestary and they are running missions down into the ‘haze’ wastelands beneath.
I started watching this a while ago but didn't get very far, now but I've now decided to go back and watch it properly.
Monty and Kelly...I absolutely love your Dungeon Dudes broadcasts about the game and came across this. What a GREAT session!!! Thank you. Real people playing the game we all love.
Hey that was awesome! Shout out from Edmonton. Also trying to make our mark and get started on our DND journey, you guys have been greatly inspirational. Much love and respect from James and Eric. Keep killing it!
Hey, guys. Great job! I've been watching your other videos and also backed your Kickstarter. Great to see it in action! The chemistry is great within the group, Joe is hilarious, I love Kelly's dry sense of humor and Jill is absolutely adorable!
Great DMing and play by the PC's. Keep up the good work
My son was born ~ a month ago. I haven't been able to play since, and I used to play 3-5x a month. I'm hurtin lol. This series is my fox now. Party on dudes, I know I'm late to the party 🤘🏻
