  • Comparing a USA made PRS S2 35th anniversary 24-08 model to a high end PRS SE limited edition model. Is the S2 model really worth $1,000 more?
    35th Anniversary USA PRS S2 24-08 McCarty burst: $1,929.00
Limited Edition PRS SE Custom 22 Koa: $849.00
Also forgot to mention that the SE has binding all the way around the guitar, headstock, and neck. The S2 has no binding, just masking lines around the body.
*** Note: I know that in the video when I took the reading of the pick ups, the next pick up was in split mode. I did re-measure it after this video with my luthier, and the reading was 6.1, so higher than in the video, but still much less than the 8.1 in the SE for some reason. He believes it must’ve been under wound at the factory by mistake. However, since this video, I have changed the pick ups in this guitar to a set of 58/15 LT. So there will be a new video with the new pick ups soon.

The Indonesian made PRS guitars are some of the highest quality import guitars I've seen. I habe a bunch of MIK guitars too, and they're all pretty great. My understanding is that Korean made guitars are fewer and fewer due to the labor costs there now versus just 10 years back. Finally, I have to say, I bought a few Epiphone by Gibson guitars that are made In China. With the exception of some sharp fret ends and a few high frets, they're pretty amazing for just a haor above 500 bucks, brand new. (Sweetwater pricing during GuitarFest) They aren't as rich or woody sounding as the real deal, but a few dial tweaks on the amp and guitar, and possibly a pedal or two gets you real real close for 1/5 the price of the real deal.

Yep, those are not the full 85/15s. They are Korean made G&B pickups made specifically for PRS. Schecter also utilizes those peeps to make their Pasadena pickups and whatnot. Plus, in the S2 they are using the TCI S pickups - also G&B made (as you can see in the video. I have a SE Custom and the SE Standard 24-08 that has the same pickups that are in the S2 shown in this video. REGARDLESS, they ARE really good sounding pickups regardless of where they're made. I have a bit of a unicorn PRS SE too. My Custom has a roasted maple neck and fingerboard with a Whale Blue QUILT top (instead of flame maple). It was still $899 too. The roasted maple neck is 3-pieces and quartersawn - and PRS decided to put a gloss finish on the back........really??......I have an '88 PRS Standard so I'm used to the gloss necks - so it's no biggie.

Absolutely agree with you, the neck carve is much better on the S2 and the rolled fingerboard edges make a dramatic difference in feel. My only beef with the S2 line is they still use the import pickups which are mediocre at best. The Hollowbody II sounds pretty good out of the box, but even the 58/15s pickups aren't that great. I feel the S2 is a superior guitar, but still needs a pickup upgrade. I wish PRS would just start putting the US pickups in them. At 2k dollars new, there is not excuse for those "S" model pickups. Play and S2 and core side by side and the difference is stunning. Thats why I love the CE models, US pickups and US made, with just some import hardware in places.

I, personally, bought the S2 models and immediately changed out the pick ups. I put American made PRS 57/07 pick ups in my 594 and I put handmade Bare Knuckle (British) pick ups in my Custom 24. Both guitars roar. So for the price of the guitar + $500 you can have a guitar every ounce as good as a Core for $2,000 - $3000 less than a core model. - SE models don't usually have maple caps. Sound quality balance vs output is controlled by many factors some include Magnets, Resistance.Inductance and variations in overall pup materials and fabrication methods. On the maple cap under the veneer that you feel is 1" thick, I believe that may be an error on the fat side? Have you posted a video on you picking up both and rocking them to hear the final sound difference. That would be very interesting. Cheers

The buyers on the used market determine the value. If someone wants a USA made body and neck, with SE hardware, electronics and bridge, then the S2's will always be worth more (and also in theory). If used guitar buyers gravitate toward the Korean made SE's, this could bring their price up, and could push S2 prices down.

Once you get onstage in front of thousands of people on a wicked humid day in the summer and try to play and your hand is sticking the entire show and making your life miserable, you will understand why some people sand the necks or like satin finishes. ;-) THanks for the video. :-) Id wondered about some of differences.

Oh and the reason why the SE is louder, it has less coating over the bodys top. This is allowing for vibration to escape. Hence louder. All my satin or or custom builds, ive put very very thing coatings on them and it allows the gutiars body to breathe. Just like i find i can hear the guitars highs better with no clear coat on the back of the neck, i can hear in my left ear more treble and for me i need that with my ears. Acoustically you can hear a difference between a guitar with a thick coating, and one with very little if any at all. I have a LP ive been working on and its been wild the difference ive discovered doing different work and trying difference parts and doing stuff with the finish etc. Just food for thought.

Also forgot to mention that the SE has binding all the way around the guitar, as well as the neck and headstock. The S2 does not have any binding.
Also, I do know that when I took the reading in this video, the next pick up was in coil split mode. However, my luthier did remeasure this for me after this video, and although the reading was higher than in this video, it was still much lower than the SE next pick up for some reason. He believes it must’ve been accidentally under wound at the factory. However, I have changed the pick ups in this guitar after this video to a set of 58/15 LT. your SE is a Unicorn. They don't put 85/15 LT pick ups in SE or S2 guitars. You can't even buy the 85/15 LT pick ups from PRS without buying a core (I tried). A set of used 85/15 LT pick ups are selling for $800 alone. As far as PRS told me, there isn't an in between model between the 85/15S and 85/15LT. So you either somehow got LT pickups or the label is wrong. If the SE pickups are hotter then you didn't get the LT (low turn) pickups. I'm guessing the pick up label is just different for that model. Maybe to due to country of origin or a new classification system. The main issue with factory line pick ups is the consistency cannot be guaranteed like the hand wound LT pick ups. So some S series pickups could be hotter than others from the same production line.

I would not say it’s a big difference. The semi-hollow definitely has a different resonance that you can hear when playing clean tones. It’s almost like a built in piezo that’s very quiet, or like a slight reverb. And of course, the guitar is much lighter.
If you’re playing with overdrive at higher volumes, you won’t hear much of difference at all, with the one exception being that the semi-hollow can produce feedback easier sometimes.
But at lower volumes with clean tones you can hear a slight acoustic quality under the notes. Other than that, the tone is very similar.

Agree, but they are definitely not the same pickups. The resistance reading on the SE neck pickup is double what it is in the S2, and is significantly louder than the ones in the S2. The labels are different as well. So perhaps there was an error in winding it and in printing the labels. Whatever it was, there is a significant sound difference. But I agree they came from the same factory.

I'm not sure with this particular company is a matter of whether or not it is worth the difference.
The quality of the cheap import line from this company Rivals and in a lot of cases exceeds the best as far as quality control goes that most of the other big brands are capable of putting out at their highest level.
If you don't have the money But you want the quality the SE is an incredible guitar.
After that it really becomes a luxury for those that are fortunate enough to have the money to spend on The US made stuff that PRs produces.

That must be a Unicorn because I have never seen another SE like that one with an f-hole. There are none listed on Reverb either. *ALL* of the PRS guitars with an f-hole on Reverb are either Custom, S2, or Private Stock.

Answer: no. The pricing scale of guitars bears no resemblance to their intrinsic value or cost to make.
Adorning wood with inlays and glossy finish doesn’t improve them as instruments, it distracts they eye from what lies beneath and for good reason.
So it comes down to construction?. In an age where machines make necks and bodies to 1/100,000th of a mm precision, what is there left to do? Pickups? A coil of formvar around AlNiCo magnets is early 20th century tech and is no secret. Strip eg.a PRS right back. No frills or eye candy. No Louis XVI French polishing of striped woods or abalonite inlays and what does that leave you with? Is that even an option you could have if you wanted? Just Oiled wood and no shiny toys? I very much doubt it. Argue nerotically if you must but for those of you who say “ahh but the tone is in the fingers and x could make a housebrick sound great’, dont you feel a little stupid? Like a fanatic repeating dogma?

thank you for sharing your view. I see your point. I guess my only hesitation would be that in my opinion, a nice painting or sculpture or other artwork only has value to someone who looks at it and appreciates the work and talent it took to create it, and how it makes them feel.
So a guitar made 100% by a machine would not hold much value for me personally, other than perhaps the person who designed it for the machines to create.
But on the other hand, a guitar that is 100% handmade and beautifully crafted would have value to me personally, just like a beautiful painting might. Because I have tried building my own guitar by hand, and I know how many dozens of hours it took me to make just one.
You are correct that a lot of it is eye candy, but just like a painting is eye candy, I can still appreciate the talent that went into designing it and making it.
But either way, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your view.

@@IamMusicNerd Last Summer, I saw Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp on stage at the Marciac Jazz Festival in France. Depp was dressed up as and acted just like a rock star. He had every symbolic offering and move you could name, but he couldn’t play or sing. He is superficial. But he looked …. Interesting. What he wore as a façade, probably cost a lot of money but that was it. Skin deep. I say this as an analogy of guitars which have many bright and sparkly appendages. To me, they are little more than Instagram influencers who appear to continually live knee deep in tropical waters….. shallow. They are Johnny Depp fake rock stars. They are fake aged parts. Worse, they’re being sold on the basis that MIA is still better than MIJ, MIK etc etc and that is proven nonsense.
So to address the work that goes into the presentation of a guitar, give me a beater which plays well over a piece of glitzy mass produced repro furniture any day. That’s just a matter of taste but does all that expensive glitz change the instrument? No. Blindfolded I couldnt tell a Harley Benton from an 8 grand PRS because i’m not looking at it. It’s all superficial. I’d like to see a PRS made from great parts and without all the mother of toilet seat fabalone inlays etc etc. Then break it down to materials cost and labour cost. Then after it’s made into a guitar, see how much profit is being made from all the spangly plastic crap. I don’t doubt for a minute that such a stripped back guitar would cost just as much, because the argument is then ‘ahh but we had to train people to not stick shiny inlays etc all over it and that costs’…. I dislike the way Prs make their guitars look, that much is clear. I also dislike how they all sound and that is vital. They feel great but at what cost?!

Fair enough. I really enjoy mine, but I also like my other brands as well. They each offer a different feel and sound that I may or may not be in the mood for any given day. At least there is enough choice to go around for all of us to find something we like. :)

All the S2 proves is that cutting down production time does not necessarily bring quality down. I've owned 3 S2s. I've owned a couple of core models and numerous SEs going way back. My favorite PRS was the old double cut flat top SE with P90s. The only improvement I would have asked for would have been a stop tail bridge. The neck on that guitar was heaven.
