  • An MTD-made Craftsman T210 riding mower from Lowe's. Can it survive 3-years of regular use or is it just another MTD junk mower? Updated to be the T2200, this video gives a full breakdown of each component after 3 years of cutting grass with a mower purchased new from Lowe's in 2020. This video should give you an idea of how these modern MTD mowers - modern Craftsman mowers - hold up.

    Glad I found your channel Kevin. Just ordered my son a T2200 from Lowes, supposed to be ready Sunday. He just bought a house with 1 acre and the push mowing was a little much even with a self-propelled. We're in Huntsville so his mowing environment will be just like yours. Now, if I can convince him to take care of it like you do.

    I've had an MTD mower for almost 30 years. the only problem I've had was the plastic wheel bearing on the front tire went LAST YEAR. Remember MTD also makes Cub Cadet.

      And they have always been known as the budget mower manufacturer. Cub Cadet was originally owned by the agricultural machines manufacturer International Harvester. If you have ever seen in person a say 1970's Cub Cadet you would understand. They were basically a scaled down farm tractor. Thick steel and cast iron. with hydraulics and a pto. You passed them down to your kids and grandchildren. They did not wear out. Todays are a joke in comparison.

      The MTD / Cub Cadet mowers of today are nothing like they were 30 years ago. They are okay for small, flat, residential use. If you work them you better service them meticulously!

    Great review video; I agree in that as long as you maintain your machine, it will last a long time without major issues. Also good on you for your awareness on the Courage engine potential issue of the bolts under the flywheel can “walk” themselves loose which if not caught, will cause catastrophic damage to your engine. Also keep eye on the valve cover gasket for leaks as well. Also good that you meticulously keep the deck clean, that is what’s keeping your deck from going rusting. I would still add a fuel cut off valve to your fuel line so that at the end of the season, you can run that fuel bowl dry to keep that Nikki carb lasting longer. When you do finally have a carb issue, I recommend you replace the Nikki with a Walbro carb, there are several videos on UA-cam on doing that swap:-)

  • @scrambler69-xk3kv

    I wish they would include a center roller on the front center of the deck like so many did years ago. Sometimes you will come to a high spot in your yard that allows the deck wheels to be lower than the center of the deck and your blades will scalp which could damage and will definitely contribute to the blades dulling. Center front roller prevents this. Had one on a Wheel Horse I owned about thirty years ago. Will always wish I had not sold it. Been thinking of looking for another one. Just a quality machine.

    I think if you run non ethanol gas in your small engines (and cars that don't get driven regularly) you can eliminate a ton of issues with poor running engines, carb and fuel line failures. You always maintain your equipment well, and that's another huge source of problems. So you've done all the right things, which a lot of people don't, unfortunately.

Just don't leave gas in them for long periods (more than a month) without running. I drain each one to a very low level and let the engine run out of gas itself, then store. No issues that way.

    I am in WV, so the hills, rain and briers are very hard on it. ( briers keep poking holes in ALL my tires on ALL my mowers. 🤨)
    Yours/His looks much better than mine.
    Anyhow, it is still running and working. I am happy with it, to this point in time.
    The only problem I am having, It is running a little rich. I can not find the air-fuel mixture screw on the 19.5 hp KHOLER 5400 series Nikki carburetor.

    Kevin, I have the same lawn tractor and the engine has 449 hours with little problems. At times the engine has started smoking when at idle and so i am looking to buy another lawn tractor. I do not like the opening around the spindle because it creats so much dust that I have to wear a mask to keep from breathing the dust. The turn tight axle has always had play in it which I do not like. The mower is very rough riding, but I don't have a clue on how to make it smoth riding. I was thinking about buying a Simplicity brand do to their great suspension, but they just stopped making them. One thing you did not mention is the lifetime lubricated spindle. I use a mulching cover all the time and I agree with you about its bad connection. And, the headlight cover is very poor, but my John Deere tractor had the same bad light seal.

    I recently bought the Craftsman bagger kit for this mower and at 1st had issues keeping the bagger unit connected to the mower. It uses hangers on each side of the rear wheels. After re-rigging the entire mounting plate and have solved the problem. Bagger works great with the high lift blades and the twin bag's fill up quickly. If you have a yard with alot of tree's or you like the Golf course look this bagger is great. My only issue with this mower is keeping blade nuts tightened.... So beware of this issue

    You have obviously taken good care of it. Although MTD and Kohler is my very least favorite combination, anything will last a lot better if you take care of it. I work on these things for friends/neighbors. They will bring them in broken and not understand why. Stale gas, air filter packed with dirt and grass, oil black as midnight, decks packed with years of grass clippings. Then they wonder why it will not do what they want it to. I tell them "it's a tool, but it's not a hammer. It does need some care and maintenance."

I had to check my bank account to confirm, lol! I started doing a bunch of looking around on the HP Smart app to see what my cost would be for these ink cartridges, thinking the first cartridges would be free but then the next ones would cost me, and was surprised to realize that the ink is pretty much free! I am starting out with the $0.99 per month plan because it's rare that I need to print something so 10 pages a month is more than I would need, but with the first month being free I am happily surprised that I'm going to be receiving a black and colored ink cartridge completely free! And a dollar a month to not have to worry about printer ink... sign me up!

    Any good mower shop will tell you to only use air to clean the mower. I know you like it shiny, but save the water for when you can remove the deck once or twice a year and clean everything. Then you can blow everything dry before reassembly. Thanks for the slow paced, thorough videos. I've got a T2200 in my online cart at Lowes. They're $2599 now. Let's see, 1 drive belt, 2 deck belts, 1 starter, 1 tire (my fault), 2 or 3 batteries, 1 new set of blades, and finally the 19th year the little doohickey that releases compression on the cam broke and I had to replace it. I sold mine to my neighbor after 6 years 😢 and bought a Gravely HD and that was a mistake. I have had to barrow my old one 4 times in 6 years when the Gravely broke down. He has yet to barrow mine. That old MTD craftsman has yet to stop working. I believe all the hater’s are just trying to justify the zero turn they bought. I fell victim to the zero turn being better and it is simply is not. They tear your yard up and if you have hills you will be sliding around and stuck. I am currently selling the gravely and looking at new craftsman or cub cadet. Basically the same mower but I get the veteran discount at Lowe’s. So probably going craftsman. Also not sure where the bad spindle thing comes from. The one I sold still has the original 13 year old spindles. And mine and my neighbors yard are both over an acre. His is closer to 2 acres.

    Your mower looks so clean for 3 years. I am concerned about Craftsman and support should I ever need it on one of these. They don't seem to have any way to see a map of authorized service centers and, from other reviews, getting someone on the phone can be troublesome.

    • @kev-reviews
      @kev-reviews  2 місяці тому

      I haven’t had to call craftsman about the mower, but I did have to call them about some other items and they were prompt to resolve those issues. Since I’m now past my warranty, if/when something breaks I’ll either fix it myself or take it to a repair shop of my choice

    • @Dooblecaine
      @Dooblecaine 2 місяці тому

      For those who are buying a new mower and may require Craftsman warranty repair, I question that aspect of the product. I did eventually find a service center map over on the mtdparts website. But it is really, really slim pickings.
      I guess we can all just hope for the best that we'll never need warranty repair on our bigbox mowers.

    This will go to the junkyard with a perfectly fine running engine, so long as it is typical. Even cars and other passenger vehicles tend to go to the junkyard running and driving, especially the lubricated parts. As long as you don't overheat it or otherwise do damage to it, it will almost certainly run till the day it has cut its last lawn.
    Since you keep it in immaculate condition, it should serve you well for a long time.
    If 3 seasons of mowing was 100 hours, this will probably last 30 years, though the rubber and plastic parts wont last that long. They will get brittle before you reach 30 years.

    • @kev-reviews
      @kev-reviews  Рік тому

      My estimation - barring some spectacular failure - is this could last as long as I’ll be cutting my yard. It’s more likely that my American consumerist values will lead to an unnecessary replacement long before it is actually required
      Edit: or we are all forced to replace our equipment with inferior electric products that have to be entirely replaced every few years

      @@kev-reviews Gasoline is a byproduct of producing diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, low lead (regular plane fuel) and heating oil. So long as these fuels are needed, and there are no indications any of them can be replaced, gasoline will be made. Gasoline is lighter than all these other components and have to be driven out of the oil before those other fuels. Before the otto cycle 4 stroke gasoline engine, they would just throw the gasoline into a body of water as a waste product. They wanted the kerosene out of the oil, but had no uses for most of the other petroleum products refining oil created.
      Personally, I think the idea that we are going to run Western civilization on soiar panels is crazy.

    2:33 You should paint that or otherwise put a barrier of some sort on it.
    4:56 It wouldn't hurt to install a gas cutoff and an inline filter. Even a small piece of debris could keep the needle and seat from sealing. This would be especially bad in a garage.
    Why are you going to replace the blades at 100 hours? So long as they are sharp and balanced, why replace them? Even if they are dull, why not just sharpen them?

      Yeah. I have some naval jelly, but was more curious how fast it would spread
      I’ve been scared off new gas shutoffs. The last few I’ve had (even brand name) leaked after a year or so. It usually gets parked with an amount of fuel in the tank to be less than could fill the crankcase completely. I check the gas and oil level before every start. If I had an issue I would know before any harm was done. I learned that lesson from a Snapper mower about 2-days after the warranty ran out 😂
      Did you not see the warped area towards the middle of the blade? I’ve been plowing through stuff like a madman this summer 😁

    Had mine for about the same amount of time… had to weld the flimsy deck multiple times, changed out 2 sets of spindles, changed the belts almost twice a season. The motor just turned 500 hours and blew up. The motor completely seized up while full of oil. Have babied the mower with fresh oil changes, only used non-ethanol gas. I have not had good luck with the mower. The deck easily bends with a rock and gets the blades stuck. Paid way too much for the mower, should have spent a little mower and went with another brand.

The Deck was not that great and the Spindles would wear out if you used a good hD Mulching blade. If it would have had a Kawasaki engine and a fabricated deck would have been really good. I fonally got sick of the crap kohler engine and sold it then purchased a Bad Boy MZ with a Kawasaki and im on year 8 and never had an issue. My punishing lawn is really a field we cut grass and weeds down. Any low priced big box riding mower is proven junk to me. The best I could do is go to a John Deere dealer and buy a 300 series riding lawn tractor. Bearings instead of cheep bushings in multiple locations, a deeper reinforced deck, better gages with more information, you get what you pay for. Buy anything with a Kawasaki motor, at least that will be a good move.

    If you know a little about lawn mowers (which is obviously the case with you and the people in the comments), I don't understand why you would buy a mower from Lowe's when you could get one for free (or almost free) from someone who has no clue why their mower quit working. My current daily driver is a 25 year old JD LX 288 that cost me $25 (plus new blades, belts, filters, battery, and a tire). It's a better mower than the one in the video, and it cost a lot less.
