Apologies for the varying audio while driving, I hadn't quite gotten used to the GoPro Hero5's new audio settings... Also, I am aware of the whining noise coming from my engine - I believe it's a warped exhaust manifold and it will be fixed in the near future, but thanks for your concern! :)
Hi @Tirsbaektv Could you please do a video on what faults to look out for when buying/maintaining a TD5 Defender. I've heard the there are different td5 engines (10p & 15p) just wanting to know what to look out for as I've got year 2000 td5 in my sights :)
I'm glad you got it working again! Defender heaters aren't all that bad when they are in tip top condition, they just have a lot of space to heat especially in a 110 Hard Top or something! Luckily I have a double cab TDCi - the heaters on those are scourching, and have very little heat variation so it's basically hot or cold!
I think you can get air trapped which makes it seem like the coolant level is higher than it should be. My discovery only heated while it was accelerating when the coolant was low as the coolant got sloshed into the heater matrix.
on the td5 cooling system the coolant only goes through the heater and fuel and oil heaters/coolers on start up when the engine reaches operating temp the thermostat opens to regulate flow through the radiator as well so the heater in the td5 is the perfect indicator of thermostat function since the coolant always flows through the heater core. since you would eventually get some heat I can only assume the thermostat was at least partially block on that side. also bleeding the air out of the cooling system is a massive pain in the arse
same thing happened to me. First cold day of the winter here in Canada and.... no heat. Called the mechanic and he asked if I had enough coolant. I thought, Of course I have coolant in it! Went home and checked the level, topped it up, and presto, heat!
Thought the thermostat was the issue with our TD5 defender heaters but although it has warmed it up a bit it didn’t make much of a difference. It’s a defender thing
When you say a few minutes do you mean 5mins or longer? Mine heats up but takes a good 15mins at 30ish mph. And what thermostat did you get? As I'm aware there's a few available for colder climates.
It seems to vary - Anywhere between 5-10 mins I'd say. It helps if I let the engine run for a few minutes before I go out. And I'm pretty sure it's just a standard thermostat as it looked the same as the one we took out. Bought it on eBay from Bearmach.
Not sure we can give an exact time frame, we're just going to keep improving him whenever we can for now. But The Creeper will also be returning later this year ;)
The same is happening to my TD5 Discovery 'heat at high speed' but the engine is warming up properly so i don't think it's the thermostat.. i think the Heater Matrix rad isn't filling properly or it's blocked, this couldn't happen in the summer.. winter is here god damn it
I think the dash has to come out for a complete change, i'm gonna flush it with rad cleanser that should do the trick and it's not difficult do, i'll change the thermostat as well just to be sure it's old anyway,. I can hear gurgling sounds in the dash so i'm sure now that's the problem
Hey @TirbaekTV is this the air coming out by your knees or the ones on the windscreen? My ones on the windscreen work and are warm - however the ones at my knees only seem to go on cold?
Do you intend to fix that whiny noise under acceleration? It sounds cool, not gonna lie!... but I'm imagining it's something like a leaky exhaust manifold gasket which probably isn't doing all that much for you engine and probably costing you a bit of power as well.
liam, your turbo makes noises it normally shouldnt make (could be the audio from the camera) but if i were you i would check the manifold for warping or a leaky exhaust gasket. And indeed the clips are a pain to remove...
Was the temp gauge getting up to temp prior to changing the thermostat im having the same issue now but mine gets up to temp fine i have flushed the matrix and system and bled just haven’t done the thermostat yet
-10 to -20?! In Denmark?! lol That's one hell of a freak winter if we get those kinds of temperatures. :D I mean, it *can* happen and *does* happen once in a while but it's really fucking rare that we get below -10 at any point during a winter. Usually it's just the "bleh" 5 to -2 all throughout winter which is why snow rarely stays for more than a day.. If we even get any. :p
Ummm defender with non working heater would be comfortable in hot place like here in Australia! I wont fixxxxx it! I need broken thermostat body organ!

Yet another video NOT showing how to change the thermostat on a TD5
Thank you for the update - I will keep that in mind just in case 'my' heating will be off one day... Cheers Axel

Easy fix then 😀 You might find that there is a small bleed screw in the top radiator hose to aid bleeding air from the system 😉

Good video I'm looking to buy a defender td5 as a daily I do 20k-25k miles a year on back roads would it be able to do it
Sure, as long as you look after it/service it - and can afford to do so.
If it was a faulty thermostat you would never reach full engine temp? Do you? Did you?
cool video when will project bob be finished

hehe XD You could try and take the heater box out and clean it indside out, or get a new heater radiator

There is a cable connected to the lever that controls the direction of airflow, that might be your issue.
Do you intend to fix that whiny noise under acceleration? It sounds cool, not gonna lie!... but I'm imagining it's something like a leaky exhaust manifold gasket which probably isn't doing all that much for you engine and probably costing you a bit of power as well.
It will get fixed at some point yes. Like you say, I believe it is a warped exhaust manifold - a common Td5 fault.

Thanks I know, saw your message on IG ;)
How much did you pay for the td5?
????
Around £9-10K. Cars are more expensive out here though, due to tax.
@@TirsbaekTV Seems in the uk it looks 10k+ if you want a reg this side of 2000 and less than 100k miles

Glad to hear his car expels lots of hot air too. I have never heard so many words, to express so little.

How 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Needs more coolant to get hotter 🤔

sounds like an airlock
