Anyone who really understands the show knew from the moment season 6 started something wasn't right--the WHOLE time, up until we find out he's been running around without his soul. I think it's amazing that the characters are so well set up that you could tell whether or not something was messed up about them before it's revealed. I'll never get over that dammit.

Yet another moment that shows how awesome Death is. It's possible he went into Lucifer's Cage and retrieved Sam's soul without Michael or Lucifer knowing, but I prefer to think that they knew he was there but knew it was pointless to try and stop him.
Personally I imagine Death walked into the Cage, Michael backed the hell up but Lucifer probably tied to hold onto Sam's soul. Death gives Lucifer a whopping he'll never forget and takes Sam's soul
Or, he went into the Cage, swept aside Michael and Lucifer as if they were flies, and took Sam's soul just like that. I bet this was just another day in the office for Death.
Death knew Dean wouldn't succeed. The point wasn't for Dean to keep the ring on the whole time; the point was for Dean to understand the consequences of disturbing the natural order. Dean did learn that lesson, so Death gave Sam his soul back.
I like to think that the test was just an excuse. Death didn't know where Dean hid the ring but he can't look weak, so he bluff Dean that he know where it is and bullshit his way by giving Dean that test so Dean will take out the ring.

After all if a soul eater is capable of doing it, the Key to Oz can split a soul in two and Lily Sundre is able to burn up her soul with spells, I think Death, The Darkness, God and the Shadow are all perfectly capable of breaking souls.
I don't know why but for some reason this might be my favorite scene of souless sam. He desperately doesn't want his soul back and he makes logical points on why he shouldn't get it back but Dean being Dean, he does it anyway. Also how good Jared plays the role makes it one of my favorites.
When Sam looked towards Dean and Bobby, you can see Bobby's face change to a really worried expression and it makes me so happy and sad at the same time... :( Same with Dean, but everyone's commenting about him so I'm commenting about how worried Bobby looked...

As for Sam showing fear in this scene, a) He showed fear in _Family Matters_ when Alpha Vamp was about to bite him -- for soulless!Sam, I think fear would only manifest if he thought he was in mortal danger. Which would apply to this scene as well; b) It's also possible that Sam feels so much fear because his soul is in the room with him, and he's picking up its emotions because of proximity. Cas says later the soul feels like it's been flayed, so it was probably oozing and radiating emotional turmoil -- something only Sam would've felt because the soul belongs to him. Just a couple of theories. ;)
Boys always found a way didn’t they, Sam gets his soul back, starts going crazy, cas then takes the crazy, Sam hits a dog, nearly destroys his body with the trials, angel possesses him, gets better, free Dean from mark, killed by vamps, revived by Lucifer, gets beaten up by Chuck, then lives out the rest of his days as an old man.
Imagine being tied down and having something forced into you that has a high chance of killing you, something you said you didn't want. It is not surprising Sam tried to kill Bobby, it was basically self defense. I know it was the right thing to do but it from Sam's perspective I can see why he would be terrified and angry.

@joeyshuny5 I want them to go to Heaven tougther, of course. I just feel that they've more then earned it, despite what Dean says. He doesn't really not want to die and go to Heaven, he just wants to be with his brother when he does. His real brother, not just memories of him. And Sam's the same way. Thats why their both so reckless when it comes to the others life. They've literally had the weight of the world on their shoulders and I just think they deserve the peace of a true retirement now..
The whole Sam and the wall breaking down was terribly written. They could've made a whole half season based on that alone.

well if he does not put his hand on his head the barrier is not going to be in his head,
even if its magic, you can't hit what you are not aiming at (doctors can't do a head operation if the scalpel is sticking in the person's chest)

a possibility, but my vote still goes to not putting enough detail in the scene during recording :P its a show after all, so its way more obvious they did not put enough detail in it, over the theory you named.
