Show and Tell: 3D Printing a Lightsaber

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- This week's Show and Tell is another awesome project shared by our 3D printing columnist Sean Charlesworth. Norm visits Sean while in New York to check out a beautiful 3D printed lightsaber hilt that was assembled from 14 individually printed pieces. The designer of this model also created a four-piece kit for ease of assembly--all the files are available online. With some proper finishing work, it looks as good as the original prop!

I did not have any luck finding the guide or files in the URL provided, am I missing something?
@@theshockmonster8421 Did you find it?
So crazy to see how 3d printing has changed in the last 7 years
We had a 3D printed Light Saber at World Maker Faire in the Ultimaker booth that someone did an amazing job sanding and finishing from an FDM printer and it looked amazing. You could not tell it was 3D printed. The future is now folks! I love all 4 of my FDM 3D printers but I can't wait to get a Stereo Lithography printer for super insane detailed stuff.
Barnacules keep up your good work sir.
woah, woah, woah, what's your 4th?!
I LOVE YOU!!!!!
hed420 We are starting a new Channel on just 3d printing projects and testing exotic filaments. The first full episode will feature the light saber, where our host will talk about different print methods use as well as assembly and prop painting for final look. Please do check us out.
I always see people making replicas of the movie lightsabers and while that's great I wish more people would make their own lightsabers. I mean, a Jedi/Sith's lightsaber is supposed to be unique to them. Something they pictured and created themselves. If you're cosplaying as one of the characters, then yeah, use that character's lightsaber. But if you're going as your own Jedi/Sith, I say make your own.
Wookie Jedi with a wooden lightsaber. Still wouldn't be original.
50Calabyte There are more people that make one-off sabers than make hero sabers. Go To FX Sabers www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php or The Custom Saber Shop Forums forums.thecustomsabershop.com/content.php and have a look around.
Laochri
Ooooh, yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about. Some of those sabers are sick looking. Like www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=45074.0
I printed my own design! If I cosplay, I plan to be a mando sith
Damn, it had to be one of my old ones :(
The current version is much nicer.
Yooooooooooo
How so, looks pretty nice to me
@Jack Meadows what?
Hey there Saberforge! I do enjoy your lightsaber company. Even though, I do prefer Ultrasabers because your sabers are too expensive. I’d recommend to lower the prices
How much is a 3D printer? And can somebody tell me how you make stuff it?
You can get try level 3D printer for around $200 or less. I have a Creality Ender 3 that I purchase almost a year ago for $180. You can print 3D models that other people have created or you can modify or create your own models. I use a free online program call TinkerCad to modify or create my own 3D models.
Nice Weyland Yutani shirt!
Man I would love to create something with a 3D Printer!!
Hell yes best use of a 3D printer ever
I feel Norm is getting better at hosting (well compared to the resin lightsaber video)
Wow that Weyland-Yutani shirt is awesome...
More videos with these two!
"you always know a Working Joe"
I made one in school but we could only use plastic. Like yours better.
I'm too afraid of Lucasfilm to even write the word lights__er on the internet. You guys are playing with fire. A gigantic torrent of litigious fire.
Where have you been? It's Disney.
Disney bougt "Star Wars TM" For a huge amount of money.
Yeah, and I also forgot how Disney is totally cool with copyright infringement. :p
lednerg If people were afraid of copyright infringement, there would not be any star Wars conventions. There are so many fan films and Saber Smiths Disney is not going to sue anyone.
Laochri Guys, I'm not actually being serious, here.
Holy shit I just happened to click on tested when this was uploaded. :D
That machined version is a mixture of Luke's "Hero" and "V2".
GEEEK FREAAAAKOUUUUTTTT!!!! GIVEAWAY PLEASSE!!!!!!!!!!
A lightsaber replica made out of plastic? Defeats the purpose.
+Michael Ziegler Lukes ROTJ lightsaber was made out of wood. Most PT lightsabers were made out of resin and electroplated. Defeats the purpose I think not (depending on the purpose at least).
+HAlariousInc Luke's "stunt" light saber was made from wood the hero prop was not.
+HAlariousInc Luke's "stunt" light saber was made from wood the hero prop was not.
It's supposed to have the weight and feel like a real saber, having it made out of plastic. Just makes like it was bought at Wal-mart.
its hollow, add some lead, im thinking of adding some lead and a laser pointer
sideshow collectibles must be so excited about people printing their own star wars items
Eh, people will still but the real stuff. That 3d printed one was falling apart
dudelivestrong that's because he didn't install everything. he mentioned a clamp that held everything together
Does the lightsaber actually have that cool beam of light it has in the series?
Please tell me the man who invented 3D printers trademarked the HELL out of it! He'd make so much damn money!
Mr. Inventern has become alot more self confident. Does great work too.
Well you don't need to make your own saber if you are a sith. It's not part of the ritual. Opposed to the jedi where it is part of graduation.
Sith just get handed a sword. But if they want no one is stopping them for making their own. And they would be quite stupid not to make their own ;).
By the way, the EU explanation for why all the sith have red sword's. It's from them using synthetic focus crystals. Mass produced swords. And some sources say they might generate the systemic crystal themselves with the force.
While Jedi go one a quest to find their own crystal all natural.
First meaningful usage of a #3d #printer. Printing a #lightsaber
Shop tour please!!!!!!!!!!
Saberforge is the best
That was cool
Would it kill you Norm to wear a different shirt?
Pretty Epic. Print a Lightsaber crystal! Purple pls.
And now I know what S. Jackson's UA-cam id is.
Does it light up?
Adam was on bbc 4 yesterday night about magicians in english tv
how about interviewing Ammnra? his kinda great in 3D printing, he, as some know, design a "dual action" hidden blade.
cool i like light savers
IS THAT THE WUMPSCUT LOGO ON HIS CHEST !!!
The grip makes it look more like obi-wans from revenge of the Sith and a new hope
+Michael Regan the one he printed is obi wans. the other lightsaber is lukes from RotJ.
+BlogVomMax Oh right I knew that the one they held up was Luke's but I thought the one he printed was supposed to be exactly the same. Thanks man.
But does it work?
Just get a Saberforge Saber and be amazing. really awesome video though
my mom said she would love one, i didnt realize she liked star wars...
Can you do a test?
Can u make a laser pointers

404....on links
where in New York
Show me the light!!!!!!!!!
GO VALCROW !!
I want One plz :-)
Now if only we can 3D print a working one :(
You can get a high intensity laser pointer that actually does burn through stuff. Though, it takes a few seconds. The power needed for a lightsaber to function as a sword would be about the same as a standard incandescent light bulb, 40 - 60 Watts.
***** But lightsabers are nothing like lasers.
JNCressey It's still really high powered light focused to a beam.
***** Riddle me this, if the light is focused, how can you see it from the side?
Being able to see lightsabers from the side and them being a finite length implies they are more likely to be some containment of very hot glowing stuff.
Lightsabers are clearly not anything like lasers.
JNCressey Light takes on a different color based on speed of travel. Also, lightsabers are like that because they're CG props. The closest I can think of to having a legit lightsaber with a limited blade would be like the beam katana from No More Heroes.
Sooo, can i have one?
the buliding you are filming in must be an old butcher shop, i can tell by the rail system
Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver?
I like his weyland yutani alien t shirt
메탈로만들어진거 멋있다진심
Why would you want something like that.
still not impressed by the home 3d printers. I know the industrial versions can do metals and does help in designing prototypes, but when used for mass production it's really too slow and not viable.
As of right now maybe, give it some years and 3D printers will be in most homes.
templetonbob I have one I am getting that 3D printer Magazine
rurutu M These automobiles will NEVER replace horses Mr. Ford!
rurutu M 3dprintning was not made for mass production
Great stuff BUT lock off your focus!!!!
Long time watcher of Tested here. This is my easy to print lightsaber I put up on Thingiverse around Star Wars day this year. Not as complex as the one that Valcrow made, but I'm still proud of it regardless. Enjoy! www.thingiverse.com/thing:321812
i want the t-shirt of weyland-yutani *o*
מגניב
I have a 3d printer.
+Yoel Rappaport I have 5, all custom built.
+Weak1ings And someone else out there probably has more than you lol
cb2k761 Yea :)
neet
Here comes Disney and there huge lawsuit lol
Print the moter cycle
Hmm when these printers start doing all sorts of artworks.. jewelry and what not.. lots of people are going to lose jobs :D... Sure unique stuff is still going to be valued. But why pay 10 times more when u can print a better one off the internet in a few decades.
They will in the future, but not right now. We cant print with very many materials and the detail isn't quite high enough yet. SIts getting better each year though, interesting to watch.
Ax1007 Most jewelry people wear is pot metal with paste stones. It shouldn't be too hard to convert a filament printer to silver and tin solder. Use a little light acid wash after the print to take off the oxides and you are good to go.

Noooo! I was almost just in time to give a crap!
Xoediac Thanks for caring
2000 likes im 2000 liker :O
"To become a Jedi you have to build your own light sabre." And you still haven't. You bought it.
3d printing is wonderful for so many things, but it fails miserably here, save for instant gratification. You essentially end up with exactly the same, low quality plastic replica as everyone else. Why would you want that?
They should make a 3d printer that prints with metal not plastiic
Broken Arms
Those are already available all the way from "fairly" cheap consumer grade to aerospace quality units that are bashing out parts for fighter jets and hyper cars. EG: Koenigsegg is printing complete variable geometry turbochargers!
Sta
It's still legal in 50 states to beat up someone who's wielding or carrying a lightsaber toy. Even a homemade one. Look it up.
+hulkhatepunybanner I believe assault is illegal anyway.
***** Not if you say, "NERDDDDS!" first.
***** I thought you had to yell "WORLD STAR" then it was OK
+intensity digital or say "it's just a prank bro"
*****
LOL
I had to look that up. I'll allow it.
