Big thanks for the feature Joel and great video! I have wanted a Formlabs forever (I think they are one of the oldest SLA printers I can remember really coming into the market way back!) I get the chipped resin might not be to everyone's liking but for me coming from the photocopier industry before this, putting chips in consumables is pretty normal. People think it's sole purpose is to force people into buying their particular consumable, but it's actually used for quite a lot more. I have never seen the Formlabs as being a lower end consumer device, more a lower end of the industrial side.
For example, you run a business that needs a constant supply of resin, but at $150 a bottle (much like toner can be up to $300 for a good color copier just for 1 color toner cart, not to mention developer or photoconductors) you don't want to be ordering heaps at a time so you order what you need when you need it. the machine is networked, its very easy to send a notification when resin/toner is low and produce auto-ordering for clients, keep track of the machines life span etc from the chip. So for me that is not a game changer, I dealt with it with XYZ Full Color for a short time, and if the color machine did a better job I would have kept buying ink and chipped filament.
Geoff... you tha man. So happy to see you getting the recognition you deserve. -Trevor
When Formlabs was released, they were considered the new guys that brought the price point down massively from what people were used to with Envisiontec and 3D Systems back then.
I totally agree with everything you say about the chipped resin. Still, I would like to add that it is also a way to massively increase the success rate since it stops the user from slicing for the wrong resin, putting in the wrong cartridge and mixing resins unintentionally, etc. Not everyone is an enthusiast that is very interested in the printer, and when used in a professional setting it is a tool that just needs to work.
Would love to see the Enterprise NCC 1701 fleet, seeing the different models in scale to each other over Her history would be great
This!
O yes!!! I'd love to get the 2 timeships from the shows( Star trek Voyager ) at the largest scale possible. I am planning on making a fan film and I'd love to have them for filming!
I totally agree! Seeing the fleet of NCC 1701's (""-"E"), and scaled accordingly, would be a sight to behold!
@@leokastle8041 I printed TOS through F in 1:1400...
Was all fun until I had to assemble a nearly 3ft long Odyssey class. Lol
C'mon Joel, now it's time for an 1:1 Iron Man statue. You have the technology to do it! Would be so awesome XD
Yes!! Time for the “hall of armor” 👍🏻👍🏻
Lets just look over the fact that FormLabs runs a consumer unfriendly walled garden where you have to buy their resin, because the bottle has a chip in it that is the only way to allow the machine to run (it tracks how long the bottle has been in use an as soon as it says the bottle is empty the machine wont start anymore, even if you refill it), the resin costs $150 per liter.
for a printer that is only marginally better quality that desktop 8k printers for a fraction of the price. I honestly dont know how formlabs makes sales
Well, the resin *starts* at $150, but there's a lot more expensive stuff from them as well ;)
These printers are meant for companies. Companies couldn't care less about that, they want support. And Formlabs is able to give just that by having this system.
People are paying for reliability every time all the time
@@davidtobin I own a form 2, if thats what they want, then they do not want a FormLabs machine. the support is pretty much useless, I havent touched my form 2 in years, I just use MSLA now, and just got 2x Saturn 2s and the Mercury X WnC Bundle for less than 1/8 of this crap.
This “battle station” is great for professional work! 👏😎
..the Lightsabers are epic! Now I want to make some with LEDs.. 👀
Just started to watch but wanted to say if he didn’t say it, the Hex3D sabers are made to hold saber kits in them.
Extra large Millennium Falcon would be cool. Actually now that I've been thinking about it, do something for one or both of your kids. Nothing really brings a greater thrill than seeing the joy on a youngster's face. What would they like?
You lucky SOB. LOL. Love what you do. Cheers
Seems like you need some Star Wars Helmets to go with the light sabers.
You should cast those lightsabers in metal! I believe that Formlabs also sells a castable resin you could use
Yes!!!
How about a helmet of some sort? A one-piece printed helmet would be cool to see. I am only a little bit jealous.
Wonder how well the machine can handle a massive articulated dragon..
AWESOME video! I love seeing the amount of detail you can get from that Formlabs printer; the battle troll looked amazing!
Thanks, dude! Truth, that Battle Troll looks CRAZY good.
I love your channel!!! You’re the reason I got into 3D printing. 🔥
hey, how fast is the printer, and what layer height did u use along with how long did each layer need to cure? I would love to know
The layer height can be 0.1mm or 0.05mm depending on the type of resin you use. Printing times varries on many factors. Build size, support size, orientation, infill, etc. A large print can take up to 3 days but I had 4 "Mask"s aligned standing next to each other taking up almost the full platform. As to how long each layer needed to cure, they cure instantly once the laser beam hits the bottom of the tank and cures the resin.
Thanks for showing this system to us. I agree it is out of the price range for most of us, but we can see what the future may bring. Not long ago most 3D printers were out of range, but look at today. This hobby seems to be getting better and less expensive - thanks for all you do to help with that trend.
When complaining about "temperature" you should also include the humidity because where I live (Phoenix, AZ) the humidity is low and 80° F is considered a comfortable temperature. Also, the thermostat in my house is set at 83° F.
Decent point. I live in a dry area of Cali and my friends in FL have the same temp we do right now and they are miserable
I love seeing all the great models from my favourite (and soon to be favourite) designers!
What about another Space Needle?
Those look amazing, i did my own Luke Skywalker light saber on my Ender 3 a few pieces at a time, but I Always wanted to do a Darth Revan Mask. Would love to see you do that on that resin printer
Awesome Video! Love the quality of those machines. A wearable Resin Iron Man Mark 50 helmet would be sick
id be happy to provide some files for more formlabs use :) been sending you an email, but no response :/ hope you see this :) ive been designing 3d printable lightsabers for years now, happy to see they are finally catching up and becoming trendy finally :)
0:16 Just out of curiosity, what do you guys consider normal room temperature???
Because to me, 80⁰F is comfortable room temperature. I live in Texas where it's quite literally 110⁰F everyday, and to me the change from that and into a house that's, say, 75⁰F is too much that it burns the inside of my nose, so I keep my house at 80⁰F to 82⁰F during the day.
Is that really considering too hot for the average person???
Joel, your videos are fun, entertaining, informative and positive. Keep on keepin' on!
BLESS YOUR NERD HEART.
Have you made collapsing light Saber in resin...iv been having issues getting mine to extend and collapse properly
For those that can't afford the L ...remember there is the form 3+ as well for smaller parts or just print in smaller sections
Still over 3 grand xD
@@miranda.cooper True...and that doesn't include the air mitigation and disposal requirements fyi ...most people doing resin printing need to take that stuff way more seriously
Would love to see some of the models from the "Printable Scenery" team printed on a high quality resin setup like this :)
I'm sure you probably know, and I'm sure people will point it out... but I'll mention it anyway. Dunking your parts in warm/hot water for 15-20 secs makes support removal much easier on resin prints. 🙃
I’m a newbie to the 3d print world and I’m hooked. But my question is how do I not put support in the body and tube of a whistle. I did that bird whistle. My printer is CR 10 V2.
would love to see some mechanical assemblies with interconecting parts. ie working transmission , Curta type 1 mechanical calculator, a clock, or a working fishing reel with bobing action. great work, love what you do KEEP IT UP!
Can a resin printed hilt be used for dueling?
Thw joy on your face presenting your light sabers made me happy.
I mean, yeah… it is pricy. But ya’ll let’s remember that what we consider standard printers now used to be at an insane price point.
OK, I love practical use prints and ones that have moving parts right off the print. They blow my mind!!
Form Labs has resins that are skin safe post curing, and ones that are supposed to be prototypes (not so safe for extended touchy feely). They even have resins that are bio compatible so that you can have them against your lips and gums.
I'd be curious to see if you can print some cool full face masks with skin safe resins. :D
Since we know you like printing stuff BIG... a SpaceX Falcon 9 @ 100%? :)
Oh man, talk about a kid in a candy store! I've always had a wish to see a large detailed ark of the covenant from Indiana jones..the finish that this machine could do would be amazing! Keep up the positive vibes!
Thanks for the great video!
Drools and shorts out keyboard...
Go for the Falcon!
😁😄😃👽
It's a great video with the BATTLE STATION from Formlabs.
Can you print a gear for look if the resin resist of the rotation mechanical of the gears ?
If they said "aas long as your printing cool things, keep it as long as you want" - just keep printing cool things until they forget to take it back...
Dude, your a winner, lol...
6:46 How many knew the answer before he said it? LOL
Hi joel, can you fix the gap between the background panels, so the blue does not shine inbetween them :)
Oh I am working on that :)
I’d love to see some D&D battle terrain/buildings or some full sized cosplay armor/pieces on that machine. It’s amazing
How about some of the starship interiors from Second Dynasty? I'd also like to hear a report on how fast and easy that level of machine is to use. Is it more efficient for rapid mini-scale manufacturing or just higher quality prints? You should also get someone to take the time to finish some of these pieces - lightsabers or whatever - and both comment on how they are to finish and of course show off the fully painted results.
What a cool setup!! I would love to see you print the Enterprise from Star Trek!
Now THAT sounds cool.
Could you tell where you buy this STL?!? Thanks Joe!! Great work!!!
Would be nice to see a multitude of thing. Sword, starship, tablets, Sci fi creatures, and statues.
idk if anyone made some good models for it, but try to print one of the hidden blades from assassins creed :) you'll probably need to buy a couple of springs to make it work, but that should be fun :)
Some say you have the best job in the world ... and I'd agree,
I think you need to print things worthy of the size. From my point of view, I'm intrigued as to how strong something could be printed. Could you build parts for a bike, for example, or would they just shred to pieces? The precision suggests you could really make some impressive mechanical parts. I'd love to see the worlds largest mechanical ... "thing". More so than just the detail on a static model, unless its some crazy akin to a laser topo plot of Seattle down to sub mm.
The "team over at Hex 3D"... is one guy! 🙂
I think you should print the death star battle station. The planet one. Or a stormtrooper helmet would be cool.
I know the intro song is from Epidemic sound, but can anyone tell me what particular track it is? I've been wondering for a while now.
Not anything in particular but I'm just curious about the infill/overhang differences to you everyday fff/fdm. Haven't made the move the resin due to the cleanup and toxic natures that I read about. Love your work dude!
Cosmetic hilts compatible with Olympic fencing blades. This is actually a project I've thought about doing for my own sabre to use it as a prop since the standard guard is kind of ugly.
Homie thinks 80°F is hot….
Santa’s elf in charge of 3D manufacturing? 😂😅
Print out armor for a cosplay, one of Nikkos models would be awesome!
Sword of Thundera!
Voltron!
Mando helmet!
I feel it on the temp with no AC. I'm near Seattle so I understand for sure
Would like to know/see this print some guitar nuts or saddles and to see if they sound just a good as other guitar nut/saddle materials. If you need someone to test the prints I have some custom guitars I make we could try them in!
I wanna see some Wicked models, maybe the recent War Machine and Tank models?
You have to make a life size Joel! That would be epic. 😎🙃
you might wanna disclose how expensive just the resin was for those prints... besides being professional machines, they are also locked to to only their own consumables - which run at very high premium prices...
Those prints you showed are most likely worth about 1000 USD of just DRMd Formlabs resin.
Shoot forgot about the resin. It was just over two liters of resin, so about $350 worth.
COOL!!!! Now i just have to win the lottery so I can buy one and keep resin in it! 🙂
I designed some Lightsaber concepts on paper , will 3d model them when I’ll get the chance.
Death Star 2.0!
Hi Joel big fan I really like the lightsabers do you by any chance know where to get the files
They are from the Hex3D Patreon
Using a LiDAR scanner, you could scan and 3D print a scale model of North City ;)
ooh that's true! get out the Polycam!
Is there something to add blades to the Lightsabers? (as to me that's what makes a lightsaber a lightsaber really...) :)
A full set of Mandalorian armor with the Darksabre!
Lmao "as long as u make cool stuff u can keep hold of it..."
We are all thinking it..'this is Joel what do u mean "if"....they are never getting that thing back.' 🤣
Print some full-size helmets on the Form 3L please.
This might be your best video EVER
Well have all those sabers, how about all the sonic screwdrivers?
Use the battle station to upscale the Mini Joel to life size!!
ooh. OOH.
as many mini joels in one go as possible.
Wow. Great video.
So... you can buy roughly 14 M3 Max printers and 14 Wash and Cure Plus machines for that.
Hmmm....
No proprietary resin and 14 complete systems with around 65% of the 3L's build volume.
I can break 12 of them and still have faster, bigger production capacity.
No thinking required here.
I think you should print a crate to send them back in.
Thanks Joel
What happens if China does to Taiwan what Russia is doing to Ukraine? Where will you go for cheap imported junk?
@@bernardtarver It's not China's fault that Americans are entitled and greedy.
@@madp3d Have you ever heard of labor costs? How about I product dump with rock bottom pricing while paying you $1/day?
@@bernardtarver Now you are are being ridiculous. Is every single thing you buy "Made in America"?
@@madp3d Just about. However, the question remains where you will go for cheap imports if China ramps up tensions? FWIW, Chinese battery maker CATL has just halted plans to expand to North America due to Pelosi's Taiwan visit.
Wicked3Ds War Machine that came out (not long ago) is crazy epic and huge
You should print ALL of the PrintABlok: Skyforce set 😁
80° that’s cool here in Texas
dude you just said my name in the opening 🤣
Would have been nice to see a fully kitted out light saber blade and all.
Damnit. I was working on something like those lightsabers. Mine would have 4 parts, pummel, handle, switch and emitter. My designs will be unique, Maybe I can still do it.
And I come to a decision... ALL OF THEM!!!!! hahah made me LMAO. I would love to see a large scale version of Aloy from the Horizon game series. shes so bad ass!
I wish I could afford a formlabs printer, they look fun.
Given the recent Pokémon Go Fest in Seattle i kind of expected a Pokémon special.Afaik some people print them frequently.
Thats very cool, I just (personally) don't love resin printing :)
Print a life sized Thunderloard LMG from Destiny game. Then print some parts to make it shoot foam darts... yes a Thinderloard nerf gun...
I'd like to see you print the most detailed part in the world to see how it comes out on it.
You need to show the power of a fully operational battle station...
omg the eletric bill
Print a large scale Death Star!
Hellraiser functional lament configuration (cube)
you should print one of the armours from the star wars bad batch tv show.
I would request you to please show the difference in print quality in a formlabs printer and a lower price 8k MSLA printer...and educate us a little more about why and when to use what printer... Because formlabs printer is expensive and would hate to learn that I could have done cool stuff with a 500 USD printer after buying a formlabs printer.
Others please feel free to comment and share your opinion...
What I do love about, you just made me faint over the price. Ok, how about 1/10th scale of the characters from Dr Who, Back to the Future, Star Wars, Mad Max, Futurama, Star Trek (original), well you take the best one, thank Joel. High five.
Hi from South Africa
80F Degrees? My loft hits over 100F, and no AC. I would love 80F. I'll be fair though. I guess it's what you are used to. :)
Heh, it's Seattle - I'm used to NOT 80F indoors :)
Batman like mega size! Malix Witcher mega size! Anything big from 3dfigureprints!
deffinetly doom guy and a Cacodemon!
I think I would have to win the lottery before I get them but the results are good.
How many of em?
can you print wearable halloween masks with the formlabs resin printer?
ohhh gosh that resin dust got me high from over here
