Just seeing this now, crazy that they make a clear version of that staff! I imagine your blade is pretty wobbly without a stabilizer, but still very cool!
Thanks man! The one in this vid is wobbly for sure. I made another with Anakin’s hilt where the blade is set lower and passes through a narrower shutter at the top which worked out better. Huge respect for you pioneering the idea for this mechanism!

Could you possibly try and make one with the tape measure mechanism, maybe just not a thin neck lightsaber just to see how it turns out.
It’s possible! I’m not sure if I will anytime soon because I prefer the thin-neck saber design, but never say never!
@@ColeFailing maybe use another model of lightsaber that doesn't have a thin neck
Doing this project with an Anakin Skywalker Lightsaber would of been the perfect fit, it maintains its shape throughout the design.

Have you thought about using fiber optics in the blade to light up the saber? You may be able to coil/uncoil them while the blade pops up and down. Great work though, the finished product looks really cool and you've come up with some really amazing solutions!

I have an old 2006 spring loaded Darth Vader Lightsaber that I've thought of upgrading. Yeah the blade pokes out a bit though but I think that it's the closest that I'm going to get. maybe some better electronics or something, I haven't gotten that far ahead.
I know exactly the one you’re talking about, I wish they hadn’t stopped making them spring loaded. They had the right idea!
@@ColeFailing exactly, the best upgrade that a 2006 spring loaded lightsaber could get is maybe some better electronics to be more movie accurate. (not so much with the 2004 lightsaber where the blade just sticks out of the hilt).

This is awesome BUT, can it retract back into the hilt? Im working on one like Disney is doing but the two spools are too wobbly.
It can’t retract yet, but one of the things I want to try next is adding a motor that will recoil the fishing line and pull the blade back in. Best of luck on your design!

Can u possibly make a lightsaber self defense knife? That would be one of your biggest challenges bro. A lightsaber knife where u Can press a button and a metal blade comes out.
I believe @jlaservideo has made something similar with his Riptide sword project, I would recommend checking that out!
yo do you have some idea of how to build back the spring loaded blades? I was wondering if with some motors and fishing lines they would be te fastest ones to turn on and of
I think adding a motor to recoil the fishing line and pull the blade back in is a great idea, I'm experimenting with it right now. The trick is to find a motor that's strong enough without being too big!
@@ColeFailing I think a gear box would do the job, if you could maximize the torque
actually I don't think that is how gearboxes work, but the gears may increase the amount of fishing line that is being pulled, that way the blade will retract faster
pleeease send a link to the clear bo staff brotha I would b applying it very differently but i really need a source for one because metal springs would not allow me to run lights up the inside
I originally found them here: www.penguinmagic.com/p/S23570 but their site now says out of stock. I recommend checking on Amazon, I think they have some plastic options on there as well (I just searched for ‘expandable staff’). I hope this is helpful!

if you were to make a saber with the Disney style tape measure system what type of plastic would you use for the blade to achieve the concave yet spooling affect
I’m sure Disney has their plastic custom made specifically for that, so you’d need to find a real-world equivalent. The blade plastic I used came from extendable staff coils originally, so one option is to go directly to their manufacturers and see if you can order some of the raw, uncut plastic. I don’t have a specific line on anything, but it’s all a work in progress!
A place to start would be to do what I did while researching galaxy edge lightsabers. Find out what its made of which If they did a patent would make it even easier because they have to disclose every detail for the patent to actually work.

I moved the activation switch into the graflex clamp.
So disney has a monopoly on this extending light saber blade because of a patent so no one can use it for anything else.
Oh yea and btw that version was green not blue

@@ColeFailing the bottom of the emitter cup is long and inaccurate. This looks more like the AOTC saber from the grenade up.
