Beautiful! While watching, I had an idea for curves. We have some leftover steel lawn edging just rusting in the “side yard.” Cut short lengths of composite lumber or galvanized steel building studs, screw them between two pieces of lawn edging at short enough intervals for adequate track support, and you get a smoothly curved piece of roadbed on which to lay track. Fill with ballast. I’m going to try it. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'd say the sound system for the Aristo steam locomotive is excellent. Well timed for sure. Would like to know how you achieved that. I wonder how all the other wood is surviving outside by now. I find that "pressure treated" wood does NOT make a difference and any rail that is "spiked" does not stand the test of time (outside). Otherwise, what a great job & fine RR.
Thanks for the comment Joel. I use an Airwire T5000 trottle. There is a CV command for the chuff rate. I have it set for about an average speed that I run the loco most of the time. ** The long bridge is re-inforced with aluminum angle stock on the sides and bottom. It is also coated with black caulk on the top. There's no way it will ever wrarp. I have constant problems with the walk ramp, even though it's stored in a shed during the winter. I'm toying with removing the ramp or maybe re-building it. ** The siding that's on pressure treated 2x8s have side slats on both sides with gaps for drainage, and the 2x8s have caulking on the tops. That should prevent warping. We are coming out of the first winter for the siding. It's probably too soon to tell if there'll be warping. If that happens, I'll change the design. PS I just went outside and looked, as of yet, there is no sign of warpage. ** If you are refering to "spiked rails" on the trestle:?... I drilled pilot holes in each spiked tie. After 5 years, there is no sign of warpage. I do keep all wooden stuctures in a shed during the winter to help with that. Last summer I started covering the trestle with a small tarp to keep it away from the hot summer sun when not in use and nightly sprinkers...hard water spotting is a problem too.
