  • I wrote the script for this video a few months after Elden Ring came out, then forgot about it until the dlc trailer dropped. And yes, that means I've been "working" on the DS2 video for even longer and haven't finished it.
In this episode of Moments in Media, I talk about how Elden Ring shows off all the best and worst parts of FromSoftware’s design philosophy.
Moments in Media is a show about small parts of media that disproportionately affect the greater whole.

I love that you tried to talk about the cons of elden ring. Unfortunately, you missed the mark. Could it be better? Sure, everything COULD be. But for what it is... Its an AMAZING game and you have to give credit where its due. The quality of the game is so much better than what other big studios put out, that then cons arent worth mentioning. They raised the bar with this one. And no one is catching up anytime soon. Thats the reality.

Honestly, I feel like you focused too much on the open areas, like yeah they were there mostly to have something to traverse, but imo the best part of elden ring are the dungeons, you can jsut wander randomly to anything that looks interesting, and you will find a dungeon, and some of them are really well made. I do agree with the point of elden ring being badly balanced, fromsoftware games, with the exeption of sekiro, are all really unballanced, in ds1 the best weapon in the game is right at the starting area, ypu can aquire the best shield and one of the best armors without killing any bosses. how unballanced is that? But Elden Ring still beats that, its probably the most unballanced game out of all of their games, with many ashes of war oneshotting anything in from of you, spells killing bosses from a distance in seconds, summons doing all the work on a boss while you sit on the side and watch.
Another thing, you mentioned that the rise in difficulty was a bad thing for the gaming industry, but this is not from softwares fault, many games have started to make their games too piss easy, since it consumed less resources in balancing. And even when people started craving better challanges, those companies didn't want to invest development money into proper difficulty options, so they just raised the stats of everything. Thats where the problem is with the majority of "difficult games". Ofc there are some games that were very negatively impacted by this trend, like Darksiders 3, where you went from previous hack and slash games where you took on armies of enemies at once, to getting oneshoted by the weakest enemy. But overall, I believe the rise in difficulty was mostly positive, as we got some really great games like Valheim, while those from companies who didn't care about making good games, and instead cared about making money got exposed for it.

I agree that the dungeons are generally the best part of elden ring, and I probably could've spent some time focusing on them, but honestly I just don't find them particularly interesting to analyze.
It's totally fair to think that the rise in difficulty that dark souls inspired was largely good for the industry (especially the AAA industry) and I don't entirely disagree with that sentiment. I just keep encountering games I want to love that leaned too hard into FromSoft style difficulty and ended up being worse for it.

yeah, know that feeling man, I've been waiting for a Darksiders 3 game for years, now I don't want a darksiders 4 game ... also, I am staring to get tired of stamina meters in every game, I sometimes just want to hit enemies, not run around the battlefield dodging and trying to preserve my stamina to just do one full combo.
