Description taken from Roadside America:
A large tombstone shaped like a rectangular tent memorializes people killed in a horrible circus train wreck 6.5 miles east of Columbus on November 22, 1915.
It was mid-afternoon on a straight stretch of track when the Con. T. Kennedy Carnival train ran head-on into a passenger train that shouldn't have been there. The metal cars of the passenger train withstood the impact, injuring only a few. But the wooden cars of the circus train telescoped into the engine, caught fire, and incinerated most of the animals and one or two dozen circus people.
The tombstone doesn't say exactly how many circus workers died (news reports claimed 24 died, later accounts put the number at 15), or even if they're buried underneath it. Maybe the mixed-up ashes of the train, animals, and people were shoveled here and the tombstone set on top as a kind of general memorial. - Розваги
As someone who worked for the circus for 10 years and lived on a circus train, thank you for paying homage to those who were lost.
Another great video my dear friend I also love how you had condolence for the animals that were lost God bless you Scott and keep you safe
no one knows what lonely is until it happends to you. without my parents im 48 but i feel like an ophran. i hope i can feel good again but i know scott makes me feel happy to be here. Vickie🌺💗
What a sad story. RIP to all who lost their lives that day.
scott is the sweetest. my mom recently died and he has been a bright light for me😊
Such a sad & tragic story. What a beautiful cemetery & tombstone. Thank you always sweet Scott for sharing these beautiful tributes. You are the best at them no one else can compare that’s for sure. May all the victims RIP.
Thank you Melany with a Y! Hope you made it safely back home !
@@SCOTTONTAPE aw well it’s no problem at all sweet Scott❤️ Oh yea, thank you for asking. We got back home around 7am on Monday morning after 16 hr drive, so you can say we were exhausted lol. I don’t know how you do it. Thats also why you’re one of my inspirations, you work hard.
Scott, it isn't silly to think of the poor animals. Actually they're my immediate thought after the people and those thoughts are exactly the same things you said. Horrible things happening to children & animals is beyond tragedy because they're innocent and often helpless as to their fate. This is such a heartbreaking story and you always show so much respect in these sensitive matters, thank you. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. I'm about to be 58 on April 4th & you and this channel are one of the very few I haven't strayed away from because I enjoy it and you may not realize how you may be helping other who may be struggling with things like depression (like me) and others. Be safe, be careful and keep being you.
That is so sweet to hear . Thank you so much for watching and continue to get better❤️
Could you something cicely Tyson and moms. Mablèy thank you
Poor animals 😢😢😢
What I horrible disaster 😱 I can't imagine what the men that had to clean up the aftermath went through emotionally.😓 My dad took me to Ringling Bros Circus as a kid, my favorite part were the animals. Thanks for reading the poem on the tomb, very beautiful, and appreciate you telling this story. 🙏💖💐🌈🕊️
another great video, Scott! Your compassion for all of the circus animals and performers that have passed away is awesome. Thank you for doing what you do!
So sad 😭,our house burned in 2011 on New Years. We lost cats! Two were rescued by fireman and one escaped through a backdoor that found the next day. I was in the process of rehoming the rest. My husband told me the firemen buried the other ones before they left that morning. The fire was devastating! Our house was rebuilt and we still have one cat that survived that day! God bless all that died that day in the train wreck! Safe travels ❤️
That's so sad. Glad you all are ok though 🙏
Ty so much! I just saw your comment!
@@anneiwanowski9653 You're welcome. 🤗
Great job of bringing this story to us. Very reverent. Thank u 🐘🐫🐅🦜🤡 RIP
So sad and heartbreaking. My aunt used to send me and cousins to the circus.. loved the animals
What a heartbreaking story, in regards to the human and animal lives lost in this tragedy. But kudos to the people of Columbus, Georgia, who took care of the survivors when they were left stranded without a place to stay, food, or essential items, and who also provided funeral services and a grave site for those who passed away. This town really stepped up for these circus people, when they truly needed help!
i still have alot grief over the loss of parents but scott gives me a bright light.💗
Hugs I lost both my parents as well ... I miss them all the time ..
@@annethomer9569 sorry to hear that its hard wish you the best.
Also Blue oyster cults bus flipped over the bridge. The one separating Columbus ga l and phenix city. It was like 1978 my mom was going to the concert or was I'm sure you already know. Anyway love and respect Scott! On your way out from that headstone there's a big oak tree on the left of the road heading out or to the back. There is a grave It's completely covered by the trees roots. Not the most amazing but wild to see.
I had no idea there was a second train wreck similar to the one in 1918 in Indiana. Many of those circus people are buried in Forest Park IL., in a dedicated area to them just like this. They all have separate markers but a lot of them are marked as unknow with a number, which I assume represents the order in which they were pulled from the train. It's so sad that these people who worked so hard to bring kids and adults lots of smiles and the happiest of memories had to die in such a horrific way. It's even sadder to think they died unknown. But they are known to God and that's what matters most. I was in Columbus last October, I wish I knew about this, I would have visited. What's cool in Forest Park is that every year they have a celebration by the graves with circus clowns, popcorn, balloons and circus music. I have never gone but heard that it's something to see, so one day I will go. RIP to these wonderful performers and animals who gave us so much to smile about ❤ 💐
I thought the circus graves were at Mt. Carmel in Hillside? Where Al Capone is buried? Correct me if I’m wrong. Maybe there’s 2 circus burials from 2 accidents? (Forest Park & Hillside, IL)? Thank you.
@@ASpectacular3777 I've never heard of any circus performers being buried at Mount Carmel. My whole family is buried there starting with my grandparents on both sides, so I've been going there since I was little. The only one I know of is Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.
I love how you show your true feelings about the people and animals , you are truly a very caring and loving human being thank you for all you do in your videos ❤
Scott, I never knew that these graves are in my hometown. I've been past there so many times and I didn't know that they were there. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Keep up the great work.
I had never heard of this awful tragedy 😞 So sad. Thank you for this video Scott
You should read up on the Hartford Connecticut circus fire on July 6, 1944.
So awlful for the people lost--- their suffering and the suffering of all the animals....
GOD Bless Their Souls they've been at peace with JESUS for a very long time 🕊🕊🕊, Thank you Scott you always present the dear souls story with respect, dignity. and grace, and the final touch with the stone is beautiful.
Scott your videos are always so reverent to dead people, also you show such respect.
A very sad story that I heard as a child growing up at nearby Fort Benning and then Columbus. Glen and I were married at First Baptist Church, the same church that held the memorial for the circus victims. It’s amazing that the church was packed for the memorial as it is a huge church…..with three large sections of pews and two aisles as well as a balcony.
I live in Columbus, cool that you were here! Ma Rainey, famous blues singer is also buried very close by this monument! If you're still here you should check it out!! It's basically in the same cemetery, just kind of across the road!
Interesting. Being burnt or drowning is the stuff that nightmares are made of. Such a horrific way to pass away. May they continue to rest in peace.
Went here my moms mom and dad is here! Wild to see. There were coins everywhere on em.
What a tragedy.. how sad .. They should have ANIMALS mentioned on this headstone as well..😢
🕊 RIP 🕊 to all lives lost.. thank you Scott ❤
This is so horrifically sad, I’m glad the world is realising that exploiting animals for human entertainment isn’t okay, we’re starting to see so many animal free circus events which is relieving. Thank you for paying respect to them as well! definitely glad I found your account, the compassion you show to not only the people but the animals lost is very commendable :)
Scotty what a tragedy for the circus, thank you for sharing their story with us.
Well covered my friend.
Scott you have such a caring heart, It is so sad that so many people and poor animals died in this tragedy.💔 Im glad though that you told this story, we can remember them and pray they are resting in peace 🙏❤

Thank you Anthony !!
Good video Brother I still have not got out that way to do this one. I plan on doing it this summer. Excellent video as always compadre!
Your videos are always really good.
Thank you they were all special and loved.
It’s so much history scattered about in Columbus GA. From movie history to old military campsites that have since been torn down. You’re actually on Victory Drive, that’s the main highway, go around the curb by the ballpark, hang a right, that’s Veteran’s Pkway.
Again…enjoy your visit.
Wow, sad story. RIP to all those souls. ♥
Once again a amazing video Scott ❤❤❤❤
Great video as always Scott and thanks for sharing it!!🤘🤘
Again a very respectful review of the events that ended the lives of people and animals who deserved better than been thrown in a mass grave..😢
Ty 👍💛
RIP to all the persons and animals.
I need to see a Scott video everyday or I go through withdrawal. The best.
I know you're gonna dig this Columbus Georgia 🇺🇸

What a terrible and sad story. Beautifully done.
When I see things about the circus, it reminds me of my favorite movie “Freaks” and their wonderful revenge. I would go when I was a child and had a blast ❤. Keep up the great history lessons 🤘🤘
May they all rest in peace.
This is so heartbreaking.
As always Scott, thank you for what you do. We appreciate your work. Educating us on story's & places all over the US. Much love ❤✌️
Will watch this one tomorrow Scott when I’m actually fully awake
Looking forward to seeing it
Interesting and sad. I had never heard about this. May they all Rest In Peace.
I felt this one. Wow.
So interesting lots of performers. I am just amazed very touching ❤
LOVE that music!!! It’s perfect!!
Thought I recognized that cemetery. I was born and currently live in Columbus Ga. I cut that grass when I was a teenager. It’s cool you’re in my hometown.
Columbus is a great town !
@@SCOTTONTAPE talking with people that live here.. they say it’s one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S but I’ve been here 47 years with no problems at all. So it’s still a great city to me.
A excellent view Scott! Appreciate your efforts and quality content thanks Bro for all! Luv&Peace friend!✌🏼💫
Thanks for the shout out for the animals as well; they are,so innocent like young kids.😢😢
I love you even more for being an animal lover!!!
I can tell this going to be sad , but amazing , Scott ❤ lets get into it.safe travels
Scott, you have taken us to so many interesting places over the years. I don’t know how you heard of this one. Such a sobering story, but a great tribute for a story that should not be forgotten.
Hi Scott❤
@scottontape, your videos are like a masterpiece of cinema. Thank you for your love of your subjects, your fans and this platform. We love you! ❤
Wow so tragic what happened to them all. So sad. May they all rest in peace. And the poor animals too. 😥🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 I never heard this heard this story before. Wow
God rest their souls🌹
Awesome video Scott. The amount of research and travelling you do behind these videos is unbelievable and on top of this editing it all, it just takes the crao out of you but your a fighter and handle it well. By the way I love how you expose your haters on your instagram stories. That’s what I call a heart of a true Canadian 😂❤
Haha thank you man
@@SCOTTONTAPE anytime lol 😂
Scott you are so compassionate especially for the animals, Ty being an animal activist myself this breaks my heart for all that perished🤗🥰🐾RIP TO ALL😿💔😿
Oh wow this is tragic....Those parents passing their child and knowing they won't see her again.
I totally get what you are saying about the animals....I found myself wondering if the monkeys thought they were safe after escaping into the trees....Did they think in words like we do?
Such a tragedy.
My best friend from primary school also passed away in a train crash in 1999.
I've always been a bit scared of them since then although I generally feel it's a beautiful way to travel....I hope they were experiencing gorgeous views and were happy in their last few hours ❤
Scott your compassion and respect shine 💖 Hopefully it was quick for the people 😢 I also love animals, sad to imagine what they went through
Peace and Blessings
Hi Scott, so sad that the dead have not been recognised even on the gravestone. So no-one knows who ‘s in the grave, RIP to all the victims who died on that fateful day in 1915 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐Thank you for remembering these victims Scott. 🤟🏼⭐️✌️👍🥰🥰
Absolutely sad that this had to happen but what gets me is how they didnt even
know the names of the people that died. You woulda thought someone woulda kept track
of the performers on that train! Great story Scott! Thank u!
RIP
Thanks!
Thank you for your kindness and generosity Tracy! Hope the new job is going well !
The longer an urban legend remains, the rumours and tall-tales build-on each other and take-on a whole new reality peddled to us in the internet age. Circus folk and their animals were exploited well into the 20th century. Their true and honest lives will never be fully known, may they all have God's grace. Good video Scott. Come to St. Thomas Ontario and I can give you both versions of the story of the Greatest Elephant of all time...Jumbo, and his untimely end. The PT Barnum version and what really happened.
Such a very sad story. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Otherwise, I would NOT have known anything about this ...
May they all continue to rest in heavenly peace! This I just can't imagine, so so sorry for them all ....
I absolutely love love love this channel! This was a great video! Thanks Scott!
Such An Incedibly Sad Horrendous Story 😢 Poor Souls Lost And There Animals!

Handled In Your Own Unique Way ❤
Cheers 🎙🎶🥂
Good content dude! I love traveling with Scott
Thank you man!
Thanks for sharing. Great story.
Never heard this story. Thank you Scott. As always you are so compassionate ❤
Sad. But interesting monument/grave stone. I wouldn't have thought about these mass circus graves existing before seeing you share about them on your channel. Thanks for doing such videos. May all of the animals and circus people rest in peace.
That made me 😢 it was so heartbreaking to hear what happened to them it would have been so scary and traumatic for everyone including the poor animals that shouldn't even be in a there in the first place. Thank you for sharing and also congratulations .
Oh how sad this event was
Thank you for sharing this story. Heartbreaking!! ❤
Thank you very much Scott! 🙏🏼 What an extremely tragic story , so sad! 😢
May they Rest in Peace! ♥️🕯️🌹
