  • The latest X-Plane 12 and X-Pilot update introduces Wake Turbulence from other aircraft from the VATSIM network which could easily upset your virtual flight! In this video I will demonstrate what happens when flying behind the wake of another aircraft

    Excellent video and a great demonstration of this new feature. I was involved in setting this up with Austin and one rationale here was to portray an "average" intensity encounter.
    Previously X-Plane tended to make stuff always "extreme" (turbulence, icing, windshear,...) but while extreme forms of these phenomena do happen, the majority of wake encounters, for example, are more of the "oops, what was that?" intensity.
    So just like our recent work on turbulence and icing, the idea here was to portray it, but not make it a sure way to end your flight every time you encounter one.
    Cheers, Jan

      Hi Jan!
      Thanks for the message and thanks a lot for you input developing XP over the years too. I think you’ve got the wake turbulence modelling just right and the way you described it was perfect! I’m guessing icing is difficult to model, I’m just in the habit of using EAI and WAI whenever I’m in icing conditions in XP12!
      Looking forward to the continued development of XP12 😊

    When I made my sport pilot license, me and my instructor were in the traffic pattern, doing touch and go‘s to the right side of the runway and an awacs e3a was doing traffic patterns to the left. We had to be very careful not to get into the wake turbulence when we landed. I was very afraid with our 500kg airplane

      I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to mess around in at all. I used it to demonstrate a feature and logged on with my initials and “OBS” and you don’t show up on the controllers scope or to other aircraft. From what I researched before doing it, it seems to be a great way to get comfortable on the network before actually trying it out.

    Nice demo and very creative. Why did the aircraft roll to the right on that last example? The vortex rotates counterclockwise and as you hit the right side vortex, I would have thought this would make the aircraft roll left, no?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  Рік тому +3

      I think you're looking into it too deeply Bill. An aircrafts reaction to wake turbulence is unpredictable. It can cause an aircraft to roll in any direction depending exactly where the vortex hits and in some instances it can cause the aircraft to roll in one direction and then immediately the other and perhaps back again! This was really well replicated in XP12.
      Looking at 3:43 you can see a slight deviation to the right, then left and then a sharp bank to the right with no input, very indicative of wake as the vortex hits different parts of the airframe, the aircraft reaction to this cannot be predicted.

    Hi, i have a problem when starting the 727 on XPlane11.
    Everything turns on but i got no electrical to FMC. The HSI VOR distance indicator does not show up, and my autopilot doesn't work.
    I'm following every step, what i'm doing wrong? The problem is HSI VOR distance indicator doesn't remove that white cover, the autopilot doesn't work and FMS doesn't turn on when starting the plane from "cold and dark" status.
    I don't have these issues when starting from "already running engines"
    I tried to click on one of the two switches behind the Captain seat and saw that the closest one is the cause behind the FMS and HSI VOR distance indicator not working, so i presume that the autopilot wouldn't work either as if that switch turns off all electricals (is that true? is that the switch that controls the electricals, instruments and autopilot?)
    The problem is that even if click on it when starting from cold and dark, nothing happens nor changes, so apparently i found the cause behind but still don't have a solution and have no idea what to do.
    Watched several cold and dark startup videos on YT but no one seems to have this issue...
    I don't have these issues with any of my other planes, default ones nor Zibo, only 727.

    This made me wonder. You know those Airbus, Boeing group fly commercial that they do to promote their aircrafts?
    Like A319 A320 A321 together
    Or A330 A340
    737-7 737-8 737-9 737-10 together.
    They fly together so close behind one after another, yet they keep the aircraft so calm and leveled.
    How could they stay so stable if there's wake turbulence?
    Also, do winglets/sharklets reduce wake turbulence?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  Рік тому

      I should think that’s because they’re not flying directly in the wake of the aircraft ahead.
      I believe winglets/sharklets/tips don’t reduce the amount of wake turbulence, certainly not enough to reduce an aircrafts WTC.

    I had a real wake turbulence in A319 a few weeks ago somewhere during approach to CDG.. And the plane rolled quite aggressively.. The captain immediately did a PA about it, and I was just smiling because I knew what that was even before the PA. But the feeling is really something different.. I think the roll was more than 30 degrees..

      The same as it always has been, absolutely love them both and we’re lucky to have two great simulators. They both have pros and con. IMO aircraft in XP12 handle more realistically but MSFS is by no means bad and offers a more complete experience (Graphics/Addons/features).

      @@flightdeck2sim understanding differentiates us from the dark ages, where everything seemed mystic. i may need to explain that i had discussions with laminar about implementing such dynamics. in fact i asked for more: i wanted them to get a 747 blow away people from the st maarten beach and other scenarios to work, which means so called 3rd objects can respond to any of your airplane's forces. this kind of force is included in other game engines, but not in x-plane. many x-planer's develop stuff themselves, so first thing to ask is always: how is it done? the wake as shown is not much effort, just a trigger followed by an event, and it works on 1st person only. i would have expected them to also visualize the whirls e.g. under foggy conditions or flying through clouds.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  Рік тому

      That would indeed be very cool to have jet blast interact with 3rd party objects and I’d love to see people be blown over but I guess that would require a lot of computing power to individually simulate all those individual parts moving around along with modelling the wake interacting with the surrounding atmosphere, if there’s a game that does that already that’s pretty cool!
      FD2S

    • @piloto_loco
      @piloto_loco Рік тому

      @@flightdeck2sim here comes the thing, it almost needs none computing power, it's simple vectors added to an object (when being modelled) and the trigger would tell according vector how to spread off center (tec term: "explosion"). You already have such implemented. check out an airplane crash on ground, the sequel shows the airplane object jumps around. very simple no resource animation, goes from any standard library. I hope i didn't destroy the magic lol, but we don't wanna be cows staring at thunders and give it too much of a wow without them trying a bit harder, do we. love your videos by the way.
