I live in the UK and I find most women refer to them as locs but most guys refer to them as dreads. I personally do not care

it's comedic and ironic to me how folks get offended by that term, but don't have an issue with using terms that shouldn't be used. 💯

I don't mind dreads or locs - I refer to it as either, but mostly use locs online. I do get slightly irritated by the argument of dreads meaning dreadful as it's such a latter day argument to me. I'm of Caribbean descent also and knew the hairstyle as dreads/dreadlocks. It only became 'locs' (no 'k') in the recent past with the natural hair movement and preachy defensiveness in some cases for people new to the hairstyle. Still, I don't mind locs as a term, I just don't want to be preached to - especially erroneously. I can't stand this filter of everything being seen through the lens of yt people, either. EVERYthing doesn't have to be in relation to yt people. Please don't go to Jamaica and try that stupid argument with Rastas!

I am in the UK and I say locs. I find people over here use the term locs. I think when people say dreads over here in the UK, I think it is when your hair looks more unkempt and clumped together, not like our cultured locs. I personally do not refer to locs as dreads. To me it has a connotation that dreads look "dreadful". My opinion only. I hear you though Keisha. Stay blessed.💜

Born & raised in the south (South Carolina) and we use both terms NOW. in previous years we called them deads & never associated it with a negative connotation.

Big facts! i used to live in Greenville, SC and the word dreads never had negative connotations. Truth be told, it was rare to see someone who had them (unless if that person was visiting), until they became "popular".

If you listen to vintage reggae tunes from dreadlocked artistes such as U-Roy, I-Roy, Bob Marley and more, you will hear their lyrics referring to their locks as dreads or natty dreadlocks.🇯🇲

I had to think about it but I usually say free form are dreads but dreadlocks and styled are locs due to most people starting them from two strands or coil twist and then it "locks & can be unlocked if needed" Don't know where I picked that up from. From me not negative in either way.

Didnt know people these days get offended at the word. Down in soflo we say both dreads & locs. My trini 🇹🇹 best friend dad is a Rastafarian whose white/gray locs touch the ground. Ive always heard him say the full term ‘dreadlocks’ or just dread. Both my brothers who’ve been loc’d up 5+ years say locs 😂 They domt care bout either word. I’m sorry you received so much drama over this topic!
