You not liking the bread essentially is just you not being German. The meals however are supposed to be heated, the Rice dish isn't as dry when heated and the gravy melts. Esbitkocher / stove is the key word there, that isn't part of a ration but of a soldiers equipment.
"Brot" is obiously bread, "auf" means upon and "strich" is spread. The other thing is just soft processed cheese. The masters of that stuff are the Swedes. In almost every supermarket you can buy a huge tube of cheese of almost any flavor. Not cheap, but delicious. "Brotbelag" is bread belay. As you experienced you couldn't really spread it. It's ought to sliced up and put upon the "coaster". The green stuff within the Rindfleischschinkenwurst is pistachio. That word remembers me to the longest official word in German language: Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz. That word is as absurd as it looks like. Translated it is Cattle marking and beef labeling supervision duties delegation law. Thanks for testing foot of my country!
Anyone who has served & played soldiers will know just how ravenously hungry you get. Outdoors in all weathers you will eat anything & be damn grateful for it. This looks like a wonderful ration pack to me.
Thanks.. the brotaufstrich I believe is spread, at the time I thought it tasted like a cream cheese but most seem to say it is like a margarine.. is that correct?
Brotaufstrich can be cream cheese, butter, margarine or even some spreadable "wurst" (sausage; e.g. liver sausage). Without having a look on the ingredients it is just guessing what it could be ;)
Thank you for the information. I sure fresh German Rye bread is delicious.. but this was very strange haha.. I'd eat it if I had to though. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Sheesh, you'd think that the joint nations of the world could toss in another scoop or two of morning Musli! That portion didn't even cover the bottom of the mess plate! Looked yummy though. Love these vids.
that was actually no pate, kent. this lyoner and the other ... which we only call wurst. these are usually sliced thin (which you really cant do in the field) and you can buy them in every supermarket. i never understood why they out them in these cans. usually they come in round slices as big as the bread. or in similarily sized rectangular form. they arent spread onto the bread. the lyoner "wurst" has spots in it usually which are different kinds of spice for variations in taste. just google "lyoner wurst" and you will find out about how its usually served/sold. then you will know how its meant. and as the others already mentioned... Thanks for the info, I did rush in to this review a little as I usually do individual meals outside. That spread still tasted very cream cheesey to me though haha Generally good food though :) thanks for watching
Wrong. Every butcher sells Wurst in cans. Even in the Supermarket are both versions available. In germany we have a meal called Brotzeit or Vesper. It usually consists of some bread, A piece of cheese and Wurst or bacon/smoked meat. There you usually Put whole pieces of Wurst on the board.
Love the review! Looks like you have some interesting stuff on your channel, can't wait to check more out. You have a new subscriber from Canada. Thanks!!
Interesting that one of the drinks is labelled "grapefruit" - because the thing actually has a German word ("Pampelmuse"); but it's not a hugely popular fruit in Germany, and millenial Germans may be even unaware of it. The "Brotaufstrich" is some kind of margerine-like thing, and it's really meant to be used with the bread which is otherwise too dry.
Thanks for the info.. I have since heard that about the spread but still tasted very much like a cheese spread to me haha.. i'd eat more of it :) Thank you for watching.
Thats not quite right. Various citrus fruits have been created by crossing the pampelmuse. The orange was formed by crossing the pampelmuse with the tangerine. The backcrossing of orange and pampelmuse is the grapefruit.

Great review ! You did it in 23 minutes, what is not easy in case of an 24h ration. I am very curious about this lemon dessert, I have to try it. Probably it is something similar to the commercial available Dr Oetkers desserts (which I like)
Hey, I was kind of rushing because It was all done before work haha (I finished the rest after) I didn't mind the dessert but not very substantial, just a sugar hit really. Thanks for watching buddy :)
Very cool ration and review sir !! Awesome 24 Hr. ration. Divided quite well. All meals looked great. The bread, I always wondered, how tasted, now I know. LOL. Know what I mean, say no more, say no more? Despite some misgivings, would love this ration friend. You did well ! Peace, John, Magnum. A nudge is good as A wink to A blind bat, say no more? If someone is not A Monty Python fan , trust me, joke from here !
Actually the bread is a very old style northern european bread and this type of bread is highly valued and popular in northern Germany for its health properties. While white flour has no nutri values beside carbs this has it all and stores for ages. They soak the grains and bake it really long do that it will get a slightly sweet taste. Tastes best with nutella or some smoked ham and salted butter and a side of pickles. You eat small quantities though, two rounds make a whoke meal.
I dont think these are the original hartkelse These looked like a brand called Leibnitz mabe off brand and exavtly looked like their butter cookies/ crakers Wich is normal food item u csn buy in store I belive older rations actually hsve the hartkeks inside but this one I belibe the Hartkeks is a bit thicker 😅😅
Hi, thanks for watching.. It had me wondering too, I think it is margarine but it certainly tastes like cream cheese, which is pretty much what Jay storms comment seems to agree with.
Hi, Yes, I have not had it myself but there is an Italian (I think - maybe Spanish) ration that has a small bottle, a couple of people have reviewed it on youtube but can't remember who haha. Thats the only one ive seen though
wheres the fun in that ;) haha I didn't have as much time as i would have liked for this one and there were some very vague translations on google translate. Thanks for watching
Kent Survival if youve not got it off by now try ecalyptus oil. Works well on cleaning glue from tint on cars..moves most stuff. Just chokes you if it needs heaps lol. Clears the sinuses out well
Kent Survival lol. Basically they are weeds and will grow anywhere. Several differant varieties. But yeah we got them grow in the NSW Victoria border in the snowfields. ATB with the new job.
To a hungry soldier, I can believe that MRE would be pretty welcome. To me, very little of it looked appetizing. The US Military MREs I didn't mind so much, we were usually very hungry by the time we got to eat and other than a little food trade between soldier's, we were usually happy with what we got. I remember a pound cake that was prevalent in a lot of the MREs and it was delicious. Probably only because we couldn't get our mitts on anything better much of the time, but yeah, delicious.
Don't eat the chocolate. Just don't. As a treat is tastes horrible, AFAIK it is and was intented mainly to plug your bowels in emergency or inconvenient situations (from the upside though) for a day. So use it wisely ;)
hmm, looks nice bar the rye bread! tried it a few times with different toppings etc... yuck! the rest looked yummy! i may look at trying one of these some time in the future!

It's rye grist&whole grain bread aka Pumpernickel. (Not that there's an american version, but the german one is actually somewhat different.) Actually pretty good stuff. Goes great with butter or margarine (or the bread spread in the EPA) and then either pate or jam on top. Or some actual ham or similar, if you got it on hand. One of the big advantages of it is that it's a lot more shelf-stable than most types of soft bread.

Food wasted . You guys should be ashamed all the hungry soldiers and people around the world, and here you are wasting food. Bunch of candy ases ..
Btw i think the breadspread was meant to go on the rye bread with pate on top. In estonia we often put butter on the bread and then pate on top.
zukodude487987 In the Netherlands as well.
yeah you are right!
@@AlexNijv yeah, every country with a bread culture does this.
Zukodude thanks for the translation of roggen.
Absolutely! We do this in Wales

GreenStorm01 I would probably very much enjoy that bread in a tin, especially with the cheese spread. Looks like a wonderful ration 🥰🍺🍕
The german army seems to eat very well those rations looks brilliant. How did it compare to the canadian one taste wise? All the best Jim
That was my first time watching a German EPA review. Very interesting. Great video.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed, I think Gundog did the dehydrated version too, worth a look.

Nicht wirklich. Lyoner is not supposed to be spreadable, if you're honest. This is more like Leberwurst.
that was a hell of a ration,lots

Pampelmuse is sort of an obsolete word, however. These things are sold in supermarkets as grapefruits for as long as I can remember.

Thank you very much :) sorry I got the spread wrong but it tasted a lot like cream cheese to me haha :)
Holy crap that is a lot of stuff!!!!! Looked really good compared to some!! :)
It's a good amount of food for sure, a little hit and miss for me though, will have to try another menu one day.. without the bread! haha
It's always the same bread in the Standard-Ones ^^
I prefer rye or whole wheat bread over plain white bread. But I dislike liver in any form.
That rectangular container at breakfast----where is that from? A mess kit?
yes, it was from an RAF survival al ration, I did a video about it a while back
thats a big old box off grub Lol
Thanks for sharing Drew

the best were and i think still are the epa typ 1 cevapcici
Agree. Those cevapcici you can buy in regular supermarkets and skip the rest.
Aren't the german Hartkekse supposed to be used to start fires in the woods with shoe fat? ;D
I dont think these are the original hartkelse

La ration Allemande à l'air pas mal ;)
What is brotaufstrich? I know it means bread spread, but that is not saying much about what it is, butter, margarine, something else?
Hi, thanks for watching.. It had me wondering too, I think it is margarine but it certainly tastes like cream cheese, which is pretty much what Jay storms comment seems to agree with.
Cream cheese tastes similar to butter for me.
This "Brotaufstrich Naturell" (natural spread) is a more durable butter surrogate which consists of milk protein and clarified butter.
Thank you :)
You're welcome.^^
Also, in your MRE expertise, do you know of any ration that come with alcohol?
Hi, Yes, I have not had it myself but there is an Italian (I think - maybe Spanish) ration that has a small bottle, a couple of people have reviewed it on youtube but can't remember who haha. Thats the only one ive seen though
Usually was part of a special officers' ration. I am not sure they are allowed to do them anymore and serve alcohol in camp only.
yep. Italian, Module B or F. They have a small shot of cordiale in those menus. They'll cost you, though; 100+ dollars for one
the green bits are most likely pistachio seeds.
A translation app would have been useful.
wheres the fun in that ;) haha I didn't have as much time as i would have liked for this one and there were some very vague translations on google translate. Thanks for watching
Or a Original German 🤗
That green stuff most likely is pistachio.
What gets me is there two mains only one heater.
How did you get this
I Love German brot 🍞!
Horrible bread if eaten straight from tin. Try toasting it, and put some butter on. Yummy!
I spotted the RAF ration tin..tape still on it Andy lol
that tape is a bugger to get off :p

what is "pate"? you mean pashtiet don´t you?
It is Not cheesecreme 😂 it is Butter. Or the light on ,in german Margarine .
It actually isn't. The ingredient list is shown briefly, it's processed cheese (Schmelzkäse) without the cheese.
Seems to me. Germans got some good shit
German MREs don't include a way to heat the food or utensils for shoveling it into your mouth?
I was surprised too, guess you just rely on an issued stove / KFS set, thanks for watching
We have our "Bundeswehr-besteck". Full Setup incl canopener in a stackable Design Made out of steel. Gundog uses it in his Videos.
