- MRE Review: German Commercial EPA Ration.
Join me as I field test a German individual ration pack.
EXPAND FOR DETAILS:
Ration purchased from: surplusandoutdo...
Music: Pilgrim Song by the water tower bucket boys.
after having left the German Forces some 3 decades ago it was some fun to see this.
I may say - there are no changes to the boxes I saw those days, sometimes in a downpour in the forests just above freezing point.
Considering the fact that the main idea of this ration is, how to bring as many calories towards the fighting guys (and ladies) in small weatherproof and lightweight shape - they have done quite well. Though, healthy food is a different thing.
Two things:
1st: except for the far north east of Germany, all have tea without milk, so the taste is lighter than the uk tea.
2nd: I have had some fun to see, that our nickname to the crackers "Panzerplatten (Armour Plates)" is by now printed onto the package. I remember them as pretty rock solid (chewing them wearing the steel helmet turns out to be very noisy in your own ears), but they serves to us an important service: They were burning (in those days, do not know if it is still the case) very well so were very useful to start a fire.
Except for that - nice video, really enjoyed it.
(And sorry for my english)
This is the EPA of my home country. I haven't tried it myself. Greetings from Schweinfurt in Bavaria
Enjoyed it Andy, a bit of a grab bag mystery. Love that Pilgrim Song.
Thanks buddy, always a surprise these things :)
You sure that wasn't the Bloody Red Baron flying over head, coming to take his ration back? Great video! Lynn XXX
haha, could have been looking for somewhere to land :p Thanks Lynn
Just getting into these videos, Great!
Nice, the German EPA’s have to be one of the coolest military rations I’ve ever seen. Such unique items in them lol.
Thanks for a fine Emergency Ration box review. Keeping in mind the purpose of the ration and the probable conditions it was designed for , things did look appetizing for the most part. You did have a lot of water in that tea tin for a single sachet of leaves.
yeah, im used to a stronger tea bag I think, but indeed, generally very good and im sure much appreciated after a day of exercises in the field. Thanks for watching James
Great review dude.
Solid review brother! Lots of variety for a commercial ration when usually they lack variety. Thanks!
Thanks buddy, love these little surprise boxes haha.. they can keep the rye bread though haha
Kent Survival Firestarter for you! 😂
Great song, And man!!!
The crackers sounded like your teeth would break eating them haha.
I enjoy these ration vids, never thought I'd get into ration packs as I'm a bit of a foodie but they're so much fun! It's like xmas opening them up
haha, It is like Christmas, full of little surprises (not always good - but interesting) Thanks for watching
Great review Andy. You haven’t loss you touch.
I’ve been asking on your Instagram for a while and my goodness did you supply a great ration pack review here, loved it Andy, thank you
Thanks Samuel, ive got plenty more to get around to
You need to make more new video
Good review. The best MRE,s are from northern countries. You either eat and keep moving or you freeze solid. I carry extra clothing and survival gear during Canadian winters. Never leave the vehicle and do not use GPS.( Mark Munro)
good hearty winter food! can't beat it :)
p.s. I love your channel. just like a short holiday
Good selection of scoff Andy. We used to carry oxo cubes and cola bottle chewy's on patrol in NI always find a kettle at a RUC barracks or station, sounds odd but a hot cup of beef oxo and pepper is lovely on a cold Irish night. Cheers Moose.
Cola bottles now you're talking.. I wanna see them in a ration haha, thanks for watching mate
MOOSEDOWNUNDER oxo drink proper tasty on a cold morning 👍
Agreed MOOSEDOWNUNDER did exactly the same in NI. Now always carry a jar of Bovril in my kit
Good review again Andy. The only thing that bothers me about the 24 hr ration packs is that I'd probably just nail the lot in one go...leaving nothing for supper hahaha. No substitute for the stew and dumplings though lol !...
Great stuff...cheers 👍
haha, some of them 24 hour ones are massive.. no way I could do that.. but I guess im not doing what the soldiers have to go through. Thanks for watching Robert
I really hope you do more cooking that's my favorite to watch
Thanks Aiko, there is definitely more to come :)
No real German could use them - after each meal you would have to go and look for 5 or 6 different garbage bins to recycle all the different materials properly!
I'm astonished that there isn't a 50-page instruction for 'Mülltrennung' garbage separation in each box 😉🤣🤣
Very cool, that looked like a nice ration too.
Thanks buddy, it wasn't a bad one at all :)
great video, just started following you after I saw you introduced on the IKS war and peace show video. now im slowly watching yours and like them more and more. Keep them coming matey.
Another great review Andy. We really enjoyed it.
Thanks you buddy :) it had been a while.. must Gert to some of the others that are going past there best haha
Great review. I think we forget how easy a stock cube or oxo cube can make a tasty drink with just hot water.
indeed, quick and easy.. and usually quite salty haha, thanks for watching buddy :)
I do love your camp, brilliant video mate!
Thanks mate :) going to try and start on camp number 2 soon.
Great educational film as usual. The packaging manufacturers for all the individual items must love the demand. All those plastic wraps for this and plastic wraps for that and not just in Germany. I lost count at ten and then they supply it all in a cardboard box is this so it all appears to be 'green'. I know Kent S. always sets a saintly example and will never leave a trace and take the surplus wrappers and dispose of them at home (but the plastic packaging still has to be disposed of) but how many others who buy this product would follow the same thoughtful example and clear up just think about how many people would bother to chase through the woods if there is a breeze to blow stuff into the environment. The main meal looked okay, I would have added the salt to taste in the process not at the end and the aluminium tray could be reused time and again. In a survival situation anything goes but if I had a choice I would not buy this pack.
Thanks for watching buddy.. I know what you mean.. doing the ration reviews.. its very easy to misplace small pieces of packaging, always have to do a final check after clearing up as so much packaging.
Great to see a ration review done in the field. I'm a new sub. Greetings from Pittsburgh, Laura
Hi Laura, Welcome to the channel :)
Always good to try others I am away this weekend and I am taking a MOD one You enjoy your meet up with Simon and have a good time I will be looking forward to see it Take care
Thanks William, looking forward to the canoeing, enjoy your Rat Pack, plenty of grub in them things
Just a quick comment Andy, in the forces you would of used the water that you boiled your main meal in for your brews. Another good little video though
Thanks Graham, Ive done that before in a ration video and got moaned at in the comments lol, the tray in this one has a sticker on that flakes off anyway.
On the box with the Hardkekse (hard biscuits) you can also find the word Panzerplatten (armor plates). Bite once and you know why they are called that. Greetings from a former Bundeswehr soldier
Hi Ralf, thanks for watching buddy
Nice one, Andy, you test them so that we don't have to if the quality is not to your liking. Incidentally, which of these MRE's is your favourite? Take care...
Hi John, I think I actually like the American ones best for their sides and extras... mains are a mixed bag though, British ones are good but ive had some great ones from Poland and Canada too.
Great video Andy, very informative...and relaxing to watch, as always.
Thank you very much Susan
All boil in the bag get thumbs down after 5 seconds regardless of contents after. Rule
Its not sausage its pashteta or patte.
Done decent bits in that mate. Like the water pouches. Very good idea.
cheers for watching Nick, yeah the pouches are pretty handy.. bulk it out a bit though
Looks good, and I am quite fond of tinned rye bread coasters. They make a pleasant change from bannock on the trail, and I like the sour grainy flavour. I have a book recommendation for you Andy - On Trails by Robert Moor. An excellent read.
I guess someone had to like em haha.. bit strong tasting and weird textured for me. Thanks for the recommendation, Ill check it out.
❤❤❤
2nd commercial Einmannpackung this A.M. I have no problem with either. German, Australian, top 2 on my bucket list. Neither cheap here, as, I assume your way either friend. Both rations are similar, but different number rations. The main is the main difference. Rye bread is strong, agreed sir. LOL. All components looked great. Peace, John.
Thanks John, who did the other review? its not popped up on my list that I can see. yeah, they can keep the rye.. the rest was all pretty damn good though. - Andy
ua-cam.com/video/vwdtlcjJI0E/v-deo.html
Great review as always ! Still waiting on some more clips of the truck easing down the trail. Lol keep em coming Andy
Thanks buddy :) should be doing a little work on 'Xena' soon, just got some new tyres to kick things off, sure you'll see her soon
Cheers Andy! Another great one! Ration reviews are always interesting. :)
Thank you :) they are like little packages full of gifts haha
I think a tin of Chef Boyardee Spaghetti & Meatballs would be better you can make your own rations head over to the pound shop for the crackers snacks and tea etc and ASDA for the mains so much cheaper
Great Stuff Brother.
Sweet Tunes btw.
Thank you :)
Those EPAs are awesome! Great review and sweet location!
Thank you :) was a pretty tasty lunch on a nice hot day
Don't worry about the planes. They are a sign or rather a sound of adventure. If you ask me they add to your channel.
Thanks Peter :)
Nice one Andy
cheers matey
I love these MRE videos. I think you should make a "romantic dinner" for your GF, with only MREs and bushcraft skills. Can't wait for the canoe video with Simon.
haha, not a bad idea.. ill pitch it too her :p can't wait to get out on the water with Simon, hopefully it'll be next weeks video, thanks for watching
Kent Survival you should also start making your own MREs for us to buy! You're the bloody Gordon Ramsay of field rations man! The first thing that get punted are those rye coasters!
Hi Andy, I’ve got a good supplier of (in date) French 24HR, my favourite MRE so far if you like to try.
Thank you for the offer Michael.. I actually have a couple awaiting review (amongst other haha) just not finding the time to get to them at the moment with all the camping etc.. very appreciated though buddy
All ways interesting to see what the troops are given to eat. Some are better than others, but as sure you know, at the end of long day, anything tastes good.
Thanks David.. im yet to come across a truly bad one thankfully
Great review. Just started on your channel and im really enjoying it
Thank you louis, welcome to the channel
As always a great video! Your the best I love to watch your videos!!
Thank you Doug :)
Thanks for sharing this vid plus your opinion on the mre Andy, looked ok :) Cheers.........Les
Thanks for watching Les
Great video as usual! Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you Issac
Great Video (as always) Have you done one on the French ones. I have a small stock and swear by them
Thanks Jonathan, I did a single meal one a while back but also have a 24 hour I need to get too. I find them hard because so many contain fish and I don't eat fish :(
Keep up the great work Andy, enjoy them so much :)
Thank you Sean
Love your video man . Will you be doing more mre video
Thanks Matthew, I do have a few to get through, just found it hard lately with so much camping haha, Id take them along but I just love cooking on a camp fire too much
Greetings from south germany. Great review. Stay healthy. Bleibt alle gesund. Grüsse Julia
Great video on the ration pack look delicious nice day for filming like your shelter
Thanks Andrew, certainly was a good day, I had to get out and do something.
Im not really sure what purpose this mre serves, it has a lot of dry crackers and rye bread, but little to go with them, it might be good for calories, but as the person buying it isnt in a war, they have the luxury of time to put together a much more enjoyable meal for the same cost imo!, but for novelty sake its interesting to see anyway
Tom's got enough MRE ration packs to survive Armageddon haha
Warn us the next time you're going to wear shorts and I'll turn the brightness down on my tablet. 😂😂
Great vid as always though mate. Very informative.
haha, I work outside too but always where safety trousers so just my face and arms catch the sun... shorts are out for summer now though. Thanks for watching Gord
Kent Survival I shouldn't take the mickey, mine never see the light of day either!! 😂😂
Thanks I like the mre reviews.
You've tried the English mre's they are quite substantial?
Thank you, Yes, the British ones are jam packed.. I find the large 24 hour rations a bit difficult to review out in the woods.. too much food haha
Mmm cork coasters ;) would it be better if ya put the jam on the rye bread to sweeten them? Good video man ;)
I doubt it.. they're terrible haha, thanks for watching buddy
Kent Survival cheers ;) from DERBYSHIRE :D
great review mate, look forward to these. been getting into them myself. the american mre's are lovely. the new camp looks cool. gorgeous legs too haha. thanks for sharing mate, keep up the good work. say hi to nicole for me. atb Tom.
Thanks Tom, good to air the legs now and again haha, look forward to seeing your take on the rations
I would love to come across the pound and hang out. As always great vid. Greeting from Oklahoma

Thank you Carlos :)
Get on Andy, looked pretty tasty mate. Thanks for sharing Andy. Atb Sconja 👍
Thanks matey :)
Love the song please name it.
dude, all we did was watch you eat and drink! haha...that was cool. would that be a day's ration or one meal?
That seems to be all I ever do haha, Thanks buddy, This is an individual meal I believe, hard to find any more information on it really, most countries seem to have civilian versions of their military rations using some of the same components.
Great video 👍🏻and I love the song ❤️
Thank you :)
Great video brother, I love mre's. I would eat them daily if I could. I prefer American mre's, but I do like to try them all. Thanks for video my friend.....
ATB,
Keith
Alabama Bushcrafters
They are like little lucky dip bags full of surprises haha, love em, thanks for watching buddy
That chocolate looks really good
I was never a big fan of darker chocolate but im starting to really enjoy it now.. same with the coffee. Thanks for watching buddy
Nice edit, good watch Andy, atb Mark
Thanks Mark :)
Nice little picnic 😎👍
Thanks Abe, was a nice day for it too :)
Didn’t seppo’s have crackers ?
Is it possible to camp on the south downs
Near coulsdon, kelsey etc?
Just wondering
Hi Damian, I havnt done it myself but I know of a couple of other you tubers who have, walking around it looked like lots of opportunities when I was there last
I like the video as usual. Those vocals on the intro song are, well sorry they are just badly out of tune. I'd stick with the noodling guitar. :)
haha, I didn't realise it had the singing at first but left it in anyway for variety.. Nico is my music finder.. blame her lol, thanks for watching buddy
i liked the intro song! guess each to their own
Nice one Andy, I love your MRE reviews, I think that's how I originally found your channel, funny as I spent this weekend in Germany raving for 3 days at an outdoor rave event.. Ahem.. check my latest viddy if interested :-) I still need to be getting a Firebox or bushbox... I'm so lazy at getting round to it. I hope you kept the rye bread tin to use as a twig stove or similar for free ;-) Great review. Stew, pasta type stuff defo needs to be thicker. Lee
Thanks Lee, you've been raving it again! haha, ill have a look. ill likely upgrade to a better twig stove at some point but the lixada does the job for the money.
Hi... great review!.....I reviewed the exact same ration only a couple of weeks ago.... mine arrived with the mains damaged so never got to taste....did take a look at it though and it did smell good!....agreed about the rye bread.....a bit to strong on flavour for my liking also....check out my review if you get some time....would be great to get your thoughts on my thoughts of this ration...ATB....Mick
ah, that sucks mate, Ill give it a watch when I get time for sure
Cool video Andy. Next time bring along your adorable girlfriend. Both of you could of shared the little meal.
Thanks Myrtle, not a bad idea, ill drag her out for the next one :p
I knew i wasn’t the only one adding crackers to sauce 😂😂
Nice one!!
Thank you Kaylynn
Summer too ^_^
Nice.....👍👍👍
Thank you :)
The Polish still like to give sticks of gum for some reason haha.
old school :) Thanks for watching buddy
I enjoyed the video man. I'm doing some UA-cam research trying to see about my 2016 menu 3 German EPA. I haven't seen not one review of that menu. There a few of the older style but not the new ones. I have a type 9 freeze dried too but I haven't seen anything about it either.
What brand is that stove?
Cool vid bro one thing all the stuff was German writing then you pull a stack of wrigleys chewys out in English writing lol if all out war wrigleys is there for you lmao
Love to know we're your getting your mre From
Thanks buddy, This ration was from a uk site called surplus & outdoors, but I also use eBay, amazon and other surplus stores.
👍
Hi!
Yeeeeaaaah, Bundeswehr Panzerkekse!!! Cool Video!
Greetings from Germany
Tobias
Hi Tobias, hope you're not offended with the rye bread haha, thanks for watching
Kent Survival Hi!
no, everything is OK! nice video! I also did a subscription right away!!!😊👍🏻
VG
Tobias
Yum
In a yorkshire accent war cry....how much?
haha, I can't remember, I think this one was from the surplus and outdoors website, they usually have a good selection at reasonable prices... sound like I work there lol, thanks for watching mate
Dude, you're doing it all wrong. I like your vids though. What you should do is, don't eat anything all day. Take a reasonable hike until day light has nearly gone. Set up your camp, then do your review. Trust me on this, it will taste sooo much better and fulfilling . Cheers HF2 .
Its a good point but I tend to do these on the days Im unable to camp (prefer to do some proper cooking in camp) usually do a reasonable hike though, cheers for watching
Good review andy looks a canny rat pack atb jimmy 😎 😎
cheers Jimmy, nice lunch on a hot day :)
Your food is much better than this HOITY TOITY kit. Hopefully, you got paid for this presentation. Looks like you are much more interesting than this kit of food. Great job showing the kit. You are so sweet.
Thanks, no pay, just for fun, I find them quite interesting to explore. :)
I’m hungry now 😀
Thanks for watching Mark :)
👍🏻
