How The HMS Ocean Navigates Life Through Hostile Waters | Warship | Spark

- The HMS Ocean; Britain's biggest warship and the flagship of The Royal Navy, as she deploys on a sensitive seven-month journey to the Middle East.
She's a floating village with her own hospital, shop, police force, church, bank, laundry, gym and even pubs. However, this village is an amphibious assault weapon - designed to sail across the world and, when necessary, bring violence to the enemy. Its population of military personnel is, surprisingly, mostly not gung-ho, but a funny and often thoughtful set of people living in and operating a highly complex war-making machine. And they love their ship.

Ark Royal was once stuck in port until they could get the radar to work. Then someone thought of plugging it in to the wall (bulkhead), literally.
Bless him literally pissing himself self scared and still doing what needs to be done respect to him.
On board ship. A few days prior to the Atlantic Conveyors sinking. An old soldier on board the Sir Bedivere. (One of the crew. It was an Army ship.) Told us that on abandoning ship and getting settled into a lifeboat. Make sure that you take a leak. If not, it can lead to serious problems later on. In his case, this was an automatic reaction.

Everybody speaks english all over the world.Thats because they care. You cannot say the same about US Americans who take everything for granted, therefore are one of the most uncomunicated people on Earth. You always expect everybody to speak your language like is some kind of divine right. Like somehow you are entitled to that privilege. Thus, you making the least effort to learn other peoples languages. What? You think the rest of the world needs to speak English just because of you? Really? What is so special about you guys? Don't flatter yourselves. People around the globe speaks english because is a necessity; for bussiness, work, academic, cultural, or educational purposes, not because you have something special to offer.
You guys are really ignorants because this same reason. You expect while they act. They are the smartest. They made the effort to learn a second or third language just to be able to get in contact with the rest of the world. What else are you doing in the middle of Wisconsin to try get in contact with the rest of humanity? Are you staying still, not doing anything? Always expecting them to speak your language? Thinking the world circles around you? That you are the best thing since the invention of wooden matches? 🙄
@@pixsilvb9638 People learn English for a variety of reasons. The main ones being that it's the main international language and it's easier than learning Chinese. English speaking people are not lazy in learning other languages. It is more difficult for them because almost everyone they meet uses them to practise their English.
I remember Chief Petty Officer Paddy Ashe from another documentary when he was aboard the Ark Royal. It was back in 2010 I think, the Ark went to Mayport, Florida and Norfolk. They also hosted USMC Harrier pilots. But the whole crew seemed to really love Paddy.
OMG as a Journeyman of: Millwright, Electrician, Teamster, Carpenter, Pipefitter, and Glazier who has worked on about every type of each system in this ship, JUST NEVER all at once in a SHIP, I have Switched it Off, Counted to Thirty, and Kicked IT in the Butt a few time Myself! Pretty tough, considering the commute from Britain to Brazil.

This may be a new vid to UA-cam but the subject matter is quite dated. The Ocean was decommissioned on March 27, 2018!
The Ocean is now a Brazilian ship known as the “PHM Atlantic” A140.
Agora esse barco é nosso! Maravilhoso navio de combate!
Why do they call it an old ship. Laid down in 1994 commissioned 1998 sold in 2018 when she was 20 years old. I served on USS Enterprise cvn65 in 2001, she was 40 years old. Enterprise was still in commission until 2012. That’s an old ship.
Agreed. She could have been easily refitted and served along side the new QE class. A Heli carrier is useful for many things.
The spent £185 million on the refit before selling the ship was sold for £85m, good business eh?
US Navy has the budget to repair and improve at cost effective rates. Multiple shipyards and bidders. UK... not so much. It was a bungle.
I got to the part about the floating village. I was like oh man that's okay. No big deal even though sometimes the village sucks. And then I got to the part where it said we have attack helicopters felt better immediately. Outstanding

Quote: 'Helicopters need headwind to take off'. So what happens in a war environment? Do they throw in the towel and surrender?
In a war zone they can maneuver the ship to the proper position for take off. At that time they were heading to their destination so they couldn't adjust for flight ops because they had to stay the same route.
This iw a channel 4 documentary, when the ship was in the Royal Navy
MOD cuts backs we should have kept HMS Ocean we could do with a Marine Helicopter assault ship
Or another idear would have been to use some of the foriegn aid budget money and refit HMS Ocean as an Emergency disaster relief ship / floating hospital
The Helicopter deck would have been perfect for that role ,Soft power in times of peace and a useful ship in times of war or pandemic
We were right to scrap Ocean. She was built to civilian standard to save money and time, this gave her a shorter life span of 20 years. No amount of money or maintenance can fix or retain hull life. The vessels faults were always increasing as a result.
@@simonhool3073 she wasnt scrapped? she was sold to brazil.
@@torrinmcmillan1924 Who have accepted the ever increasing maintenance and support costs as she gets older, they also won't work her as hard. Due to decisions made during her build to save pennies where they decided to use end of line parts for her systems she was very costly to maintain. Her main water main was seriously corroded and her electrics were out of date. She is in better material state than the Sao Paulo (ex Foch) and allows Brazil to keep a toe dipped in the Aircraft carrier game, long term Brazil wants to build an indigenous carrier but they will need international partners to do that. The UK selling Brazil HMS Ocean puts us high up the list of potential partner nations for that project which is a good outcome for UK industry. Finally HMS Ocean was end of her projected 20 year life and her crew was needed to help stand up HMS Prince of Wales.
Waste of money for a outdated ship

Well Brazil and Chile are extensions of the UK interests in Latin America, this "purchasing" makes sense. This is not bad at all I hope this new capability helps the region to have more stability.
Well, the region is very stable at the moment, the thing is Brazil has the responsability for great portions of the SAR area on the south atlantic and to maintain the dominance on the sea because of its large oil reservoirs.

HMS Ocean was not the flagship of the Brazilian Navy when this documentary was made. The video title is misleading, the people in the video are Royal Navy officers maintaining a Royal Navy ship.
I understand that old ships become expensive to maintain....but....imagine if the British navy had its new super carriers AND kept its old light carriers (Through Deck Cruisers) AND this ship...AND...toothed up its other helicopter capable vessels and kept the whole lot in service. Just a thought, I know it wouldnt be cost feasible, but what a fleet in a computer game.
That would've been awesome to see, but to maintain a fleet that big - in addition to extra destroyers, frigates and submarines to support 5 aircraft carriers/1 helicopters carrier - the MOD would need a budget 2/2.5x bigger.
