    This is the story of a microcosm of World Society during the Age of COVID. We spend enough time with the crew that we come to really care about each sailor aboard HMS Northumberland. I truly hope they all weathered that storm and that they kept the disease from their families. Hugs to all from an old sailor.

    44:00 the fact that Russian subs could be sailing in the Irish Sea and off the North Atlantic elsewhere in Irish waters, is absolutely terrifying - the Irish navy would be no match for a Russian sub attack, so we Irish absolutely depend on the Royal Navy to defend us 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️

    I really enjoyed this although I know nothing about navy life. There’s a lot that obviously goes on with a ship, its crew and the tasks they are required to do. I did the whole episode in one sitting and it seems that ships, like anything with rotating machinery, have there moments but obviously they have the technicians to sort problems out. I’m not sure I could handle the close contact constantly around others and I couldn’t jthink of a worse place to be than a ship during Covid but I guess these brave and dedicated sailors make a commitment to service whereby they are called on to maintain excellence under all situations. I take my hat off to them, I admire them and I have a new respect for them. Well done production staff, this was a great documentary

    lol everyone saying that these ships are garbage because of the amount of issues have no idea what they’re talking about .. these ships have been tested time and time again, and have proven themselves to be a formidable force.. that being said, these ships are up to 28 years old (the first ship was built in 89’, the last ship built in 2001).. things are bound to break when a ship is that old

      @jwayneair 26 днів тому +1

      @@LeonAusta “saying” is just that, obviously coined by someone that has no clue. How the RN allows Russian vessels and air to get that close their mainland is absurd, especially such a vital base. And then let a Russian vessel tell them what to do inside UK territorial waters is utterly mind blowing.

    • @LeonAust
      @LeonAust 25 днів тому +1

      @@jwayneair It was coined by personal as a piss take, we all know how powerful the USN is.
      Typical 1960 to 1980 saying.
      Anyway the Royal Navy compared to their 1950s to 1980s brothers have had politicians cut the shit out of the Royal Navy down to an almost ineffectual force that's disgusting, but I hope the standards have held.
      The current RAN is no better but it will soon double in size due to China's bullying, we are creating a modern network centric ADF force with current F-35/ and not to distant Nuke subs in the not to distant future, a vast improvement especially for a country of only 26 million people.
      Of which is not much bigger than Florida's population.
      Generally it was a saying to stir up and take the piss out of a friendly Allie, but i'm not sure that the US get it?? as many Brits take the piss out on us Aussies and we take it with a smile and we give it back........with a smile.

    Warships are pushed harder and the ship manufactures are introducing more civilian specs and cutting the military specs to cut costs.
    Thus when these ships get old they fail more often.
    Maybe British politicians are NOT replacing these ships as often and when they do, they alway reduce the numbers from the previous class thus a reduction of numbers.
    So over the decades and decades these ships are reduced in numbers and pushed harder and harder, they have also been made from cheaper materials and made to the minimal specs.
    As for personal they are manned to the minimal amount and is the training up to the old Navy standards? probably!
    The Royal Navy always punched above their weight but it is the politicians that are not giving them the tools to do it anymore.
    The tools are to increase ships numbers and capability and extended maintenance, fit better weapon systems, increase personal and pay, conditions, and have fair time on station at sea to home port etc.

    British officials should be ashamed of the ship that can't perform the tasks that they are trying to do what would happen if they were at war and they had to run into a larger storm and fighting a battle they would be screwed for sure.

    • @LeonAust

      British politicians should be ashamed of cutting the Royal Navy's ships to a minimal level, by 2030s this Navy will be not that much larger than Australia's frigates and Destroyers.
      When I look at what they had in the Falkland including all those support ships those politicians have severely cut the Royal Navy ship numbers to almost being ineffectual in view of constant warnings of conflict on the horizon.
      The Royal Navy standards were or are very high compared to many other navy's standards thus punched above their weight ...is this the case now?
      Hey but its not as bad as Russia's shitty navy and its capability/maintenance in the black sea against Ukraine.

    Heating and ventilation are basic requirements for crew welfare when aboard ship, if you can’t provide basic good working conditions you will lose sailors to better jobs where you won’t be killed doing something mundane, clean, ventilation, heating and minimal shower sharing and ultrasonic sanitation are basic life essentials when shut in on board a ship for 8 months in frozen or desert conditions, anything less is abuse and 19th century working conditions,unacceptable ✌️❤️🇬🇧

    DRUG TESTING? did anyone else notice that during the drug testing that the guys collecting the urine did not even wear gloves? seems odd but not nearly as odd as how many guys were quick to volunteer to do 'WILLIE WATCHING"

    • @robertschumann7737
      @robertschumann7737 5 місяців тому +2

      1 gloves are for the watchers peace of mind not the handler. Any medical professional would tell you urine is completely and totally sterile. There is absolutely nothing to worry about in handling it. Could you imagine how time consuming it would be to change your gloves every time you handled a sample during a random 200 person drug test? Easier to just handle em and then wash your hands throughly afterwards. 2 I can't speak for the Royal Navy but when I used to get randomly tested in the Army they actually wanted and expected everyone to pass. It's a huge difference from probation where they expect you to fail. They call it "Willie watching" but "back watching" would be more accurate. Anyone that failed a random usually wanted to fail. It's when you screw up and get ordered to go take a test is when they are hardcore about it.

      @@robertschumann7737 i am a medical professional and i can tell you that URINE IS NOT STERILE and i have always wondered how that myth got started, feces is way way more dangerous but urine can cause many problems for you. You said gloves would be time consuming because you stated that for 200 people being tested it would take a lot of time. however you can keep the same pair of gloves on, you do not have to change them after every bottle of urine! I am going to take your word on the willie watching though as it sounds like you are the authority on that....
