Every game has its pillars - the people you think of immediately when you hear its name.
Whether it’s an incredible, once-in-a-generation player, an influential pro-turned-content creator, or maybe even the game’s most memorable one-hit wonder.
But, when it comes to shaping the core identity of an entire scene, very few people have impacted their community more than James Chen - the FGC’s iconic, crying commentator.

Fun fact: it's not Mentioned here but James is also super passionate about Tetris and commentates the Classic Tetris World Championships every year!
Fun fact on top of that: Chris Tang, THE commentator of CTWC, was competing in B5 and is even mentioned on 4:45
Yup he's definitely not an expert on our scene but his passion and his excellent commentary makes him a joy to listen to every year. Absolute legend, I hope to qualify this year and have the legend himself commentate me :D
Thought I recognised him!
I was so surprises when I first heard him commentating Tetris
i can watch james chen play tetris 99 all day. supreme content right there
When I attended EVO for the first time, in 2017, I came across Chen, whom I greatly admired. I was so nervous and awkward to approach him, especially cause he was talking with someone else, so he could kinda see I was kinda standing awkwardly to the side waiting for them to stop talking. He then waved me over and asked how I was doing. When he noticed my danish accent he asked where I was from and was blown away I'd traveled across the globe to attend. When I asked for a picture he beamed a smile, threw his arm around me and gave a big thumbs up to the camera. That was easily one of my best experiences of the entire trip!
Talk about a GOAT. I’m glad he made it clear you were welcomed and enjoy your time at EVO
I bumped into the man at Canada Cup 2015. I think that I still have a picture of that, but anyways... he is a great guy to talk with. VERY, VERY passionate about Fighting games and Evo.
He was clearly enjoying the stop in Toronto. I would not mind sitting him down and talking community with the man, he is quite insightful.
I shook his hand and had a little chat at EVO 2014. Told him that I'd traveled out from Norway (and that Skullgirls was popping), and his face lit up with interest. He loves bringing up that he wasn't seeing new faces in these interviews, and he probably loves seeing new faces at events all the time now (well, when offline comes back for real).
The FGC wouldn't be as big as it is now without James Chen.
Fighting game community community
Daigo hugging him was the best thing I watched this day.
James Chen is the absolute GOAT. Nice to see him get his shine.
Agreed!
Tokido makes JChen cry with love, Tekken makes JChen cry with salt.
I met James Chen when he came to my state I told him about my heart surgery after that he took me out to lunch and we talked all the way till he had to work he’s always been. A nice guys
That’s so dope
Press X to doubt

Oh hey it's that dude! Legend who saw the FGC rise up from the arcade era and never ever left. Glad he got a whole video 💯
James Chen is on the Mount Rushmore of video game casters. Absolutely no doubt.
Damn, this the type of documentary that give you the FEELS. Dimitri, theScore esports crew, THANK YOU for making these kinds of videos. We need more of this kind of content during these crazy times. Shoutouts to James Chen and his amazing career in the FGC. I hope to see an EVO event in person someday soon.
Hes probably balling his eyes out right now watching this
I've never heard of this guy before, but his passion is admirable. You love to see someone pouring their heart into something
Just UA-cam tokido evo win and watch the last ten minutes if you appreciate the fgc you can kinda feel the level of emotion he (j Chen) is feeling especially after tokido's winning remarks
This guy basically made EVO dude
James Chen will always be one of the greatest FGC casters of all time. Nothing but love to James
I instantly recognized him from tetris. Didn't know he was such a pillar in other games as well.
Him calling Axe a one hit wonder hurts D:
As a Game Dev I understand the passion and love James feels towards video games and the FGC in particular, I've been enjoying the FGC for well over a decade now and I've shed my tears of passion as well following the carriers of many great legends. Thank you to TheScore eports for recognizing not only the people on the main stage but also the people who make every single event all the more passionate and to James Chen thank you for your absolute passion, dedication and all around love for the FGC and video games in general.
I'm not crying, you're crying.
If you aren't, James is.
Fighting game is something so great.
Half of my ps5 "about me" second to leffen saying "if I wasn't good, you know that I was lying"
you spelled somsing wrong
@@00modey9500 you right 😭
Fighting game is somsing so great
I'm not gonna lie, I got pretty emotional when that happened, myself. Especially because of how long Tokido had been fighting for that top spot.
Petition to make a Casters Appreciation Day
I’ve known James since we were undergrads together and he has always been the most passionate, humble and nicest of people. I am happy to see him recognized for his contributions to the FGC in this video.
theScore esports has been really good to the FGC with their coverage of it and I just wanna say thanks for that.
Good that he cares about the esport he commentates on
I actually teared up for this one..
Man I love when you guys focus on key figures from different esports. Always love seeing the passion different people have for their esports. "Fighting game is something so great" indeed
James is legendary. His commentating adds the hype to the game.
Idiots: "Video Games make you violent !!"
James Chen: Cries
I love James Chen. I rarely watch esports, even EVO I sometimes miss, but whenever I do watch, and I hear James Chen's voice, I get hype just by proxy. Such a passionate soul and a pillar of the FGC.
More than a caster, this dude loves all of the community.
Thanks to this type of people games are at this level of recognition.
Thank you James
Chen is a legend and the FGC is the golden gaming community. He deserves these props.
Feels weird to call him a "salty, raging superfan." The guy has loved fighting games forever, and has been competing since the earliest of early days, even if he is never a top player. The guy was around in the original Tomo days. He was at the first Evo, when it was BBB. He wrote gigantic informational bibles for many early games. Hell, he invented the term MAGIC SERIES!
He is my favorite commentator of all time, and his absolute love and endless hype for fighting games is inimitable.
I have to admit when he is not here it feels kinda weird, this video made me happy thank you !
Now we need one for Seth Killian please.
Just finding this in 2024. What a lovely tribute to James Chen. When I think of the FGC he is definitely the person I think of most often. That EVO 2017 moment gets me every single time.
Thank you for being one of pillars of the FGC, James! I've been watching Ultrachen's "Tuesday Show" every week since its early days in 2010 😁
James Chen is a legend! I was fortunate enough to meet him in Canada. Watching this vid gave me a flood of great memories from 7 yrs with the fgc for SF4. James Chen at EVO always made it super special
This video deserves millions of views, is one of those that makes your heart melt. Wholesome
The reason why i like James Chen so much is because his commentary is always informative and educational.
James Chen is iconic, I remember playing SF4 and getting into the tourney scene. I used to always remembering him casting and saying “IS IT GONNA KILL” 😂. Seeing him cry at EVO every year really puts the icing on the cake for how passionate he actually is about the gaming community. Hard to not love this guy!
Sony needs to permanently higher James on contract for every Evo.
He is truly The Passion of the FGC.
James Chen deserves better than to be called a "salty raging superfan", he's a legend in the FGC similar to long time sports commentators (each country and sport has their own, hard to name a general example)
I don’t play fighting games but the commentators make it such a fun experience for spectators that I can’t help but watch
James is awesome. Such a good dude and always passionate and will great you with a hug… my last 4 EVOs have been amazing in parts due to him
James Chen is a legend. I love this man. Carries casting when hes on it. Absolutely the GOAT
I practically grew up in the SoCal FGC and I can honestly say that fighting games really are great. Thank you James Chen and thank you theScore for doing a feature on him and bringing more attention to this (often overlooked) genre of esports.
James Chen is undefeated in dad jokes among e-sports commentators.
POG my boys are getting some sponsors, love it
Literally had tears in my eyes when i saw james chen tearing up after what tokido said great guy love his passion
The way everyone appreciates what he built 🥰
Been watching James on UltrachenTV and other fight game tournament streams since sf4 blew up back in 09. I played fighting games as a kid and never knew what I was really doing. Just hit buttons and watched cool shit happen. No strategy. No understanding. No nothing. James and his FGC content such as 'First attack' opened my eyes to the depth of fighting games and the beautiful chess game that is played out on screen. For this I thank him so much. Because without such knowledge I would never have been able to enjoy fighting games as much as I do now.
A true FGC living legend!
So glad to see James Chen get his spot light! He is the reason I got back into fighting games!
great video. so cool to see a guy have such a passion for something he loves.
Dude james chen is one of the reasons why i wanted to get into fgc production, its just too clean LOL
i bet daigo telling him thank you for your hard work felt so great. All of James hard probably paid off at that moment lol
This is one of the freaking best ones guys ! Love him !
James and fighting games are eternally and inseparably linked in my mind. First thing I gotta do when I see him again is give him a big damn hug. He’s the best representation of the best parts of the FGC.
Seriously....as a lover of the FGC...and a kid who studied GameFAQs of MvC1 .... James Chen deserves a statue....he can't be forgotten
Bless this guy... unlimited passion. FGC owes this guy a lot
And James was right. Fighting games have come back stronger after the pandemic. After the release of SF6, and the comeback of beloved games like MVC3, this is going to be the biggest evo yet. Project L has been shown and has ton of newcomer hype, tekken 8 coming soon and a new fatal fury/garou game was announced. The future for the FGC is bright.
I hope James knows the FGC loves him as much as he loves it
James Chen is an emotional man and he is not afraid to show it. His rage can be seen in his streams, his passion can be felt at every tournament.
He IS mad salty when he loses tho... lol
James Is a Gem 💎 he is amazing and a vital part of the FGC community ❤️💪🙏👍
When's the Maximillian Dood story? He's next, he deserve's it
Dimitri just so you know we can tell how excited you were to read that Geico sponsor
When James cries we all cry, the dude's passion is contagious
James is a such a legend, happy he finally gets a video about him
The second I read the title, I knew it was James. Love James Chen, that man BREATHES love into the FGC
I love James but the title is so dumb. Its what a zoomer who never heard of the FGC would call James
I wish I could like this video a hundred thousand times. Thank you, James
i knew it was james chen from the title LMFAO.
Great video. James truly is a treasure for the FGC.
I don't think anybody has as much love for the games they're involved in than James Chen does for fighting games. He's been around FOREVER and he still has so much passion for fighting games.
James is such an absolute treasure.
12:29 this part made me very emotional
james chen being the GOAT im glad to see him get the recognition he deserves on theScore
That guy is just very emotional and likes to express. Nothing more!
A great tribute to a great man. Thank you James.
JAMES CHEN!!!! my Favorite commentator!
Thank you James Chen! Keep fighting the good fight.
I fucking love James Chen. We are very fortunate he chose to stick around the fighting game space. The emotion he brings is priceless.
i cried watching this, we love you james!
Originally was introduced to James from his great commentary in the CTWC, his casting is incredible no matter what games he commentates
That Tokido run at Evo and what Tokido said after the win really got me too. Especially knowing how long he has been chasing that title.
James is the GOAT one of the best commentators in the FGC
Been watching him for years and hopefully for many more years
GG on the Geico AD that so awesome
I don't know why I worried that Tokido's "Fighting Games is something so great" wouldn't show up in the video. One of the best moments in EVO.
PS. It almost got me too back then.
Saltineas is all part of esports. It's basically an art now
I just recently knew this guys name, but he's so Iconic I knew right away that I'm watching FGC content whenever I see this guy.
I teared up like 4 times watching this.
*What an amazing video... this was perfect.*
A video on james chen lets goooo
James Chen is amazing. GOAT. Love his spirit and commentary.
6:11 holy shit thats jwong vs dsp lol gee i wonder how that match went
Nah man james is the best hands down the godfather of esport commentators and when hes paired up with ultra david its an unbeatable duo
Strangely enough, DSP has a few wins over JWong. I’m sure he has more losses, but somehow he’s gotten a win or two in there
Great vid. James is a legend.
That clip was showcasing someone playing SF on an Xbox controller.. That was Madness..
I say it again. Please keep doing FGC content. Most people do not know how great it can be.
god bless james chen, truly the goat. also nice to see lord aris in one of these.
JAMES IS A LEGEND OF THE FGC FOR A REASON.
What a grind. What a legend
That EVO where James cried at the end was the absolute peak of the FGC. It has never come close to recapturing that high. They got these big, 50% empty venues and corporate sponsors, but that was, IMO, as big as it could ever get without becoming something different... something that it has become today, to a certain extent. But that's just the tourney side of it. The roots are the same as they ever were, although without the real arcades.
That feeling to me is something I'll never forget. The feeling of that punk vs tokido grand finals was so unbelievably hype and electric you could feel it in the air. But don't worry brother, we'll get there and beyond again one day ✊
James commentary is just awesome
FGC really wouldnt be the same without James Chen
Thanks for making this video
