Did I enjoy it for the first 2 hours yeah. But then the cracks start showing, Only being able to stand in 1 position to view your fighter was a dissapointment, not crucial. but a dissappointment. This is just a remake of 1 of the modes from Original Battlefront 2 over a decade ago on dice's engine. Ship Scaling could be better, and in coop , other than the other squadron, the wrest of the ships on either sides just fly in a route with the occasional off engagement, very scripted and on rails feel from observation. instead of a full swarm dogfight that you see in star wars. AND the old BF2 you could land inside the enemy ships and fight in a FPS to destroy stuff from the inside. The ship customizations were meh at best, I cant say the game was a dissappointment, But IMO it wasnt AMAZING!!! either.
I'm gonna need you to be honest with me here. If I removed all the words between you and criticizing and then replace the ing in criticizing with an e, would the comment be just as accurate to your feelings?
After Battlefront 2 I've learned they have some very talented people working there even if we hate a lot of their practices. Shocked there's no microtransactions though.
The game is short and simple with a terrible story. This is half a game. This is what is called a "Minimum Viable Product". The bare minimum to satisfy a customer. The Star Wars veneer is where half the time and budget went into. The story is an extended tutorial. How many times can you replay 2 games modes (where one isn't good) and 3 maps? Only 5 v 5. No 20 v 20. No asymmetric game modes, nothing!
"Anyway, I DIGRESS" No problem, I totally understand how you feel. Most of us do. It's hard talking about modern Star Wars without feeling bad by the gigantic missed opportunity the new trilogy is.
People are still super pissed about the sequel trilogy almost a year after it ended and will go out of their to shit on it. I watched none of them, only watched Rogue One of all the post-Lucas Star Wars movies, and generally didn’t think too much of the series growing up but watched them because everyone else did. But I never tire of seeing that fan rage because it’s fascinating to see, it’s funny, and you don’t have to be a fan to understand that it lacked a vision and was corporate as fuck. Also JJ Abrams is a hack.
I can’t get mad at diverse representation in shows and movies as long as they doesn’t interfere with the quality. Some of them will beat you over the head with their importance but others just let the work speak for itself. In terms of big name, multi billion dollar franchise IPs, it’s really just there for checkmarks on Twitter and clickbait about how This Is What We Need Right Now In The Age Of Trump. Most people won’t and shouldn’t give a shit.
I dont get the hate, i enjoyed it. But also i wasn't trying to see or bring up the "politics" in its creation. Its a movie.....enjoy it or dont. People are pissed at the fact its a female lead, (and lot more female actors and scenes) or pissed about the story which is very similar to the original, yet no one complains about the original. I think people hate just to hate. Its fine if someone doesnt like something, but for to call it a travesty, a waste of space, trash or whatever else is a little dumb
@@samhyatt4863 With the amount of times they've just strait up lied in the past, I don't think we can just accept that statement at face value. Perhaps Disney put enough fear behind the threat of losing the license after their last colossal screw-up to make them keep their word, but I wouldn't put my money on it (I'm literally not...I'm waiting a few months or more to purchase, if I buy it at all...they've lost too much of my trust).
I really hope this blows up and sells big so the company can see this and go... Huh we should keep this game alive and add more modes maps and starfighters. Also i would love the game to have 10 v 10 mode instead of 5 v 5, giving both sides more to work with, one squad can be officive focused while the other can be support bomber focused. And battles on planet surface or in clouds would be really cool.
@ 'I hope it blows up so they can add more features' 'I hope it doesnt, and stays shallow and featurless' Bruh, did you even listen to what he was saying? You are both talking about the lack of features, yet only one of you is optimistic and hopes for improvement. People like you need more hugs or some shit so you arent so damn cynical.

@@rebotsomat sadly , thats usually not how works , they already decided if they will continue developing it or jump to the next game
@ uh? im not a fanboy, im just saying that his vision of what could happen to squadrons is what happened to battlefront 2, which turned into a good game after EA listened. Im just saying its possible, while you came in and were like 'no' without a good reason to be like that. The fact that this game even got made is a miracle, since the genre isnt exactly bursting with popularity.
sometimes i can understand why it’ll be 5v5, if you played battlefield games like Air Superiority or War Thunder most dogfights with a lot of players tend to become 5 players chasing one plane and its a dogpiling experience, remember BF4 jets? well sometimes more is not better.
@@rebotsomat They make far too much money of MTX unless it becomes illegal or adult only they won't change, this is just for their public image." We're changing guys"
Does anyone else love re watching his long reviews just for entertainment value alone. And then a new one comes out Me: idk if I am even interested in this style of game or even planning on buying it, might aswell spend an hour watching a 20 minute video in a span of a month.
It smells like a peace offering to Disney, "Look, we can make sellable Star Wars games, please let us keep the money printing license!" and then as soon as they get an extension it's back to surprise mechanics wrapped in gameskins.
The bane of flight games... HOTAS+VR is the true way to play it. I wish I had the cash to buy both 😂 For now, I'll just settle for a fun, solid, SW starfighter game.
This is one of those games that looks great, and is interesting, and is an IP I like, but I will never play it because I suck at easy flying games so there's no way I'm the target audience for something like this. But I'm glad it got made and hope it does well. Thanks for another great review, Ralph!
Take it from someone who only recently got into this genre with Ace Combat 7, everyone sucks when they first get into these kinds of games, the amount of stuff to keep track of while flying is just rly hard, actually mastering them is incredibly satisfying tho.
@@TheSpeep I was new to this genre as well with Ace Combat 7. Loved the single player campaign but the multiplayer is too hectic of a dogfight. You're nonstop getting warning about missiles locking on and have to constantly maneouver like crazy. That actually turned me off from this game seeing that it could be another hectic air (space) combat. Or maybe I'm just terrible at it.
Yea, I have been having a blast with this game in VR. As I wrap up the single player story, and have played dozens of hours of fleet battles at this point I am starting to want more environments, ships, and little ship interior decorations to play with. I hate that EA finally gives us what we want, a game without all those traps and microtransactions, and now I am just dreaming about all of the potential cool stuff they could add. Its too bad that they cant just start ripping out environments from battlefront to bring into this game, even if it just fills out the multiplayer modes.
we all know what's going to happen now.... Star Wars Squadron won't exactly meet quarter expectations, EA will shift the blame on Motive, they will force them to create a "LIVE SERVICE" shitshow and they will be shut down...
Skill Up is so ridiculously convincing: i don't like VR, i don't like Star Wars, and i don't like shooting games, but he makes me feel like i should play this.
@@gaywoman420 Probably because it's not comfortable. A lot of people have problems with VR due to simulation sickness. Some people get sick just playing something like this on a flatscreen, much less in VR. You can get your "VR legs" but getting there is tough for some people and many don't think it is worth it.
This is the first game I've played in years in which I can genuinely FEEL myself getting better at it. Changing power levels, adjusting shields, switching target types, microdrifting, checking my range, pinging attackers, retreating to safety, flying inside enemy capital ship shields... It all is slowly, consciously becoming an inherent part every flight. My only major complaint is that I wish the targeting wheel was integrated into the ship interior. I would also love to see how the game looks with the brackets and targeting reticle disabled for a true instruments-only experience. Anyway, I haven't used a joystick for a game since Episode 1 Racer on PC way back in 1999. Squadrons has convinced me to save up for a HOTAS setup, provided I can even find one at this point (seeing as how this and Microsoft Flight Sim have resulted in many sellers being completely sold out).
Skill Up: I dunno what this ship is called Me: That would be the Tie Reaper, which was introduced in Rogue One, Was used as a personal ship by the 6th Sister in Fallen Order.
6:30 No no no no no. You can't go on that mini rant and end it there. Now you gotta make a whole review for the new trilogy. Please, id love to see a 40min+ vid of you explicitly pointing out all the narrative problems with it.
I didn’t even hear about what Hotas was until I watched this, and I am definitely going to save to purchase it so I can experience what PEAK PERFORMANCE feels like.
You know you can change the control scheme on controllers to “aviator” that puts roll and pitch on R3 and yaw and throttle on L3, combined that with inverted pitch and boom! It feels like ace combat. So it was pretty ignorant just throwing controller under the bus.
Man, I absolutely loved this game, from maxing out a U-wing to be a shield destroying nightmare to pulling off the most insane maneuvers imaginable in a Tie Interceptor, I had so much fun with the mechanics and even the story I just wish that EA could've done more with it. Like you said, ground missions every now and then and even freely walking in the hanger, combined with the already amazing amount of immersive-ness this game can give, I believe truly would've made this a game that people couldn't call themselves a Star Wars fan without playing.
To be fair to EA, I picked up my first Need For Speed in years with 'Heat' due to it's lack of nonsense or cards or whatever. So the efforts to steer the ship right have been showing up already I think.
NFS Heat is arguably some of the most fun I've had with a racing game in a very long time. It's just a solid game, with a surprisingly solid story (if a bit short).
It looks pretty cool, good to see EA making a game worth playing. It's clear that Squadrons was inspired by the classic combat sims, which brings me some memories of playing Freespace... I really hope these games will get remakes.
The shield - Engine - Weapon energy shifting, changing fire mode single, all barrels, changing shields forward-rear etc.. All explained in awe.. I guess so little amount of people have ever played or even know of X-wing (DOS game) back in 1993 where it had all those features.. yep.. *27 years* ago.. *Edit*: it even had more, like changing to ion cannons to disable targets and board them, switching to concussion missiles that were really fast or torpedoes that were slow but packed a punch.. All the missions, free to fly without following too much of a corridor you have to play in.. The tractor beams and all.. it was all there.. even the death star run.. and all from inside the cockpit without any complaints to play in 3rd person mode like the new generation craves so much.
Going forward, I really hope AAA companies make mid-priced games free of bullshit like EA has done with Squadrons and 2K has done with the Xcom game that released earlier this year. Given the fact that the AAA cartel decided that $70 needs to be the shell price for next generation and the next Depression on the way, I’d even go so far as to say it’s necessary.
@@TheREALHugo4 Darksiders, Space Marine, Mercenaries 2. Games that are solid, fun, and well made, but aren't big budget blockbusters and won't ever be classics
The thing you don't get is that this game is litterally a remaster of old X-Wing, Tie-Fighter, X-wing VS Tie Fighter and X-wing Aliance games. The hangar, the energy management, Joystick controls come from there. They removed the blasters mode to put their customization options here instead. They also removed B-wings and Tie advanced (right call, they were over-powered). Apart from that, good job ! Thank you for your hard work !
I get it, he is younger than me, but it still hurts if he talks about the "complexity" of this game when there was X-Wing and Tie-Fighter back in the day. Good times and still unparalleled.
It's got all the complexity of X-Wing and TIE Fighter with the EWS systems, inspecting ships, missiles, countermeasures and a bit more, plus it gave energy management some well needed rebalancing.
It's so nice seeing actual good media coming from Star Wars in the recent years. The Clone Wars returning, the Mandalorian, the revamp of Battlefront 2, and now this. Least we have good content outside of the recent mainline franchise. Edit: Forgot to add Fallen order to the list as well, my bad.
Dang, they really love the "imperial defector" plot these days huh... This, Rogue One (Bodhi Rook), Battlefront 2(Iden Versio), and the new trilogy(Fin) all rely on this as strong story element.
@Wow so Edgy you gotta look at things differently. not everyone read the books, and movies almost never get the books right. the cult attached to the original trilogy need to have a little more of an open mind. its a movie, designed to entertain. 1-3 done in the early 2000s were actually good movies, and after the abominations that was 7-9, most people agree. sure it wasnt the underdog that came from nowhere like it was in the 70s, and the didnt have to literally invent new techniques to achieve some proper effects for them, but they were still good. far as im concerned if it doesnt have glaring plot holes, awful effect, or too much mental gymnastics, its not hard to like a movie without comparing it to something 40 years old
I'm inclined to give it a slide, since you aren't playing as the defector and also spend about half of the game trying to push that guy's shit in, which is kind of refreshing
I played this game 8 hours straight with a Hotas and in VR. It truly is incredible! Edit: rebind your roll to the little paddles behind the throttle, it'll give you way more control over your rolls. I played on pc with my Index, it worked fine for me.
If they don't do a sequel they should go back to what games used to do and release expansion packs that were almost full games on there own (in most cases) a clone wars expansion would be amazing
I enjoyed the jabs at EA for actually making a good game for once. It was also fun to get the micro-insight into your views on the new Star Wars (knock-off) movies. You continue to be my absolute favorite reviewer of games, and i tend to watch most of your videos, even when i know the games are nothing I would be interested in.
Every time you do a Star Wars game review I am reminded you are one of *those* fans. Good review of the game, though. I'm not a Rogue Squadron fan, and I stuck with being a Trooper/Jedi and not playing the vehicle modes in BF2, but I'm super interested now!
I don't understand the "it feels slow" complaints. 1. The OG X-Wing and TIE Fighter games were glacial in comparison, so Squadrons actually feels a lot faster than its predecessors. 2. The sense of speed feels fine when you're next to a frame a reference (like a Star Destroyer). What people are complaining about is the fact that in space there's nothing to give you the sense that you're moving (cuz it's space), and speed is relative.
Its called having different opinions. The originals felt faster. The new ones feel slower. Its not really a debate, because its about feel. It feels slow.
@@rebotsomat I understand that. But I encourage you to go back and play the originals, or even X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter and report back on the sensation of ship speed (or lack their of).
I'm playing it on psvr, after a few days of practice I feel completely fine in the vr experience, and it's amazing! I actually want them to keep support with more content.
Gamer: “ Wow!!! This game is so good!” EA: “ Wait..... what??? It doesn’t even have our surprise mechanics that give players the freedom of choice?!?!?!”
Some tips from a sim fighter enthusiast for enjoying this game on a budget at a similar level to a hotas+vr player(pc only). VR: there's a cheap alternative combat sim flyers have used for years to emulate vr especially in combat games: head tracking. And don't let the things you'll see when you look it up fool you, it's not a cheap copout despite being rather cheap. The concept is easy to understand, it's exactly the same as a vr headset but the screen isn't strapped to your face, Instead, a webcam tracks your head movement and amplifies it in the game camera, so if you slightly rotate your head to the side your pilot will turn all the way around to look over his shoulder while you're still facing the screen. Think of it like a third thumbstick for the camera that you move with your neck. Besides for saving up it's main application is in phisical sim cockpits, since a vr headset would negate their purpose as you can't see the panels and not many can afford the space for wrap around projected screen set ups. Only thing is you'll need a tracker to stick to your headset for the webcam to track, whic can be either one of the fancy stuff( I've seen some cheap kits for 30$ tho) or three infrared leds on a piece of plastic if not even just a sticker on a piece of cardboard(not as accurate), the webcam doesn't need to be anything fancy either. On the software side just use opentracking, haven't used it in forever since I got my old oculus but last time I checked it was free and damn good. Hotas: there's nothing that can truly emulate the accuracy and feeling of a good stick and throttle combination so I really advise that you get yourself one but if you really can't don't let this stop you from enjoing the game, the analog sticks on a controller are fine enough but you'll need to solve the issue of overcrouded button mapping. This requiresone of the best toolsI ever had the pleasure of intgeating in my simulators: VoiceAttack. I won't go too much into detail on how to set up a voiceattack profile for squadrons but all you need to know is that it's a cheap 7$ program that let's you map buttons and macros to voice commands, so rather than having to play tango on your controller you can just yell stuff like "all power to shields!" "Cut the engines!" Or "launch fox 2!" And voiceattack will execute the command for you. I recommend using this software even if you do have a hotas, using more advanced commands you can basically turn your profile into a copilot ai capable of also responding to keypresses or interfacing with sim cockpits and going automatically trough flightbchecklists but here's the catch: it's not plug and play, you need to set up each command. It's not impossible or really even that hard, the interface is extremely intuitive but unless you put in major effort you'll have to stick with "if I say x then press y+z" commands until you've learned your basics, or it will get janky quick. Just a sidenote: I have not bouht squadrons yet so I have no way to test the efficacy or compatibility of these tips. Voice attack works for everything (you can even use it for coding Tony Stark style) but I'm not as sure about opentracking, I'm mostly worried that not being meant for simulation the game won't let you map inputs from separate devices and that could mean trouble, so do some research before buying stuff for it. That aside I hope this helps, see you on the battelfield when they fix the hotas issues, and may the force be always in your favor
In VR am I the only one who stands during every chat with squad mates in between every story mission. The feeling changes EVERYTHING about the story. I will never play this game without VR. Completely diff game!!💯
Currently playing this in VR with Hotas absolutely mind blowing you want to add an extra layer. Add a woojer edge vest all combined words can not describe how good of a VR experience this is.
Great review SkillUp! I've been craving a game like this for years now, takes me back a bit to the early 90's flying X-Wing and TIE Fighter on DOS and Windows 95 :). Playing on PC with HOTAS, as you say there's a really awkward deadzone which means you tend to overcorrect making aiming a little more challenging than it should be! You're bang on about the entry cost in terms of peripherals for this *cheap* game. If you want the full experience, it'll cost you but that depends on how deep down that particular rabbit hole you want to go. Me being a relatively hardcore flight simmer, I've got a Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog with dedicated rudder pedals and Track IR for headtracking (something sorely lacking in this game, which seems incredulous for a game with such good VR support. Honestly it's a completely transformative thing to have, being able to just look around a cockpit in real time, flicking switches with your mouse or tracking targets during a dogfight. It's a great experience when you have all these things, but my setup costs about £600 at least just for the peripherals which is kind of nuts. Add a VR headset and that will easily double. So yeah, just drop the same amount of money you'd spend on a mid-level gaming PC for flight sim bling and you can play this game how it was arguably meant to be played. Oh, and there's the deadzone issue for PC, but fingers crossed the devs will get that patched sooner rather than later, they commented on the reddit that they're aware and working at it. The story while somewhat generic is cool and good fun, while fleshing out the lore surrounding the Starhawk ship featured in EU/Legends. The AI needs some work, instead of trying to get on your six they'll merely joust with you, doing constant heads on passes which can get frustrating. They also seem to "agro" on you constantly, for no reason. In one mission I was getting wrecked constantly by a group of X-Wings that jumped in. Even if I hid behind a cargo container, all the fighters would focus on me (even though they couldn't physically see me) and ignore all my AI squad mates shooting at them. Aside from that though, I honestly didn't really have any issues in the campaign and found it pretty enjoyable, especially with the changing perspectives between Rebel/Imperial factions as the stakes get higher and higher. Multiplayer has been great, but ranked is pretty busted atm. If someone leaves on your team, that match doesn't get counted towards your ranking... which when they take so long is a MASSIVE issue. Like seriously I've only had one out of five ranked Fleet Battles matches actually count towards my ranking because some prick left half way through. As always, great review man. May the Force be with you.
I played this entire game in VR on the PC with an Oculus Rift S running on an RTX 2080 Ti and it is AMAZING! This game is so cool in VR! Sitting in the cockpit of a tie fighter and flying through space is so damn fun!
"the new trilogy was such a colossal failure that even a game like this [...] steers clear of anything we saw in those horrid movies" I absolutely LOVED that comparison
Playing on PC with HOTAS, rudders and in VR. Star Wars never felt better. The deadzone issue is annoying but workable - even fixable with external programs. Performance is great on my rig. So happy this turned out great.
So this is basically Freespace 3 in a Star Wars universe. Nice! Loved that game back in the day. There is even the same mechanic of redirecting power to the engine/shields/weapons.
One uncovered setup in the video - I'm playing on PC, using VR (Quest) + controller. Setup works great as well - the immersion from a game like this is unmatched.
Thanks for this review. I’m looking to play this on PC (no vr) but Ultrawide. I guess I’ll wait for the patches ... but I’ll look forward to it. Appreciate the comprehensive coverage across gameplay methodologies. Most other reviewers say something like: “there are a bunch of ways to play it - I only played it this way.”
If we can have 2 ea's, one that rips off people with sports games and the other that creates high quality games with ips like star wars, I'd be down for that.
@@samhyatt4863 sorry I was unclear, I was trying to say that they have released games in the past to good reviews and then once the review cycle is finished they have added microtransactions. A really scummy practice. Hope it's not the case here. Not like EA to actually release a reasonable priced game worth playing.
Sam Hyatt it’s not like Activision ever gives ppl a heads up before they add stuff so I have no idea why you think EA would be any different. If there’s none added by the holidays then great but otherwise you’d be a fool to trust what EA says.
DC4Life BilCaesar well i know the facts that their last two star wars games are amazing and that if they break their *promise* with this game then that will be the downfall of their company. they definitely learned their lesson. they explicitly stated with this game that there would never be any mtx or lootboxes or anything along the lines of being scummy. if they break that explicit promise then that will be their conpany’s end and they know it.
Sam Hyatt well I hope you’re right but to trust EA on their word kinda makes you look pretty gullible imo. I’m sure they’re backing off MTXs for a while due to all the surprise mechanics stuff that was laughed out of parliament etc but I think to just say “they’ve learned their lesson” is pretty close minded, I hope you’re right (for the fans sakes) but it’s guna take a lot more for me to trust EA enough to buy one of their games on launch. All this means is that they haven’t found an ACCEPTABLE way to monetise it yet that won’t piss ppl off. Maybe they learned after Fallen Orders success but you’re an idiot for taking their word for it. It’s not like publishers haven’t changed their minds in the past is it?
I hope this does really well and helps bring back space fighter sims! I was hoping Star Citizen would have done that with it's huge crowd funding numbers, but it never happened. I'm really hoping for some remasters of the Wing Commander games. WC1 remastered with Mark Hamill coming back to voice Blair, would be a dream come true.
It's a decent game that pretty much did what it promised. Though having been brought up by the X-Wing series, it sadly comes up way short to filling that 20 year old void.
@@TheFlypaste im not talking about that. Im talking about the overall sense of speed, which is not the same as the previous games. Also, your comment is very presumptive, as the power system shifting from the originals is precisely the reason I even got this. Try not to be so cynical.
As a huge fan of Star Wars pilots and the Rogue Squadron games, this game was a love letter to me. The story is fun (horribly balanced on Ace difficulty, especially imperial missions) I loved every single one of the characters, and the last mission where I got to speed up into an asteroid field, on VR.....dude......I want MORE. The story was fun, small in scale, but interesting seeing both sides, although I was really hoping I could choose one side and stick to it during the whole campaign. I played both on regular and VR, and while regular is fun, VR really elevated the experience A LOT, and that’s with a controller..... god i wish I had a HOTAS. I’ve been loving the multiplayer, it’s already my newest addiction, and, while I love first person only (as a BF2 player who played cockpit only and always got hammered by 3rd person players) Still, I do wish they’d add the option for 3rd person offline. I do want more content though..... How about some Legacy missions?. Allow players to experience the battle of Yavin, Endor, maybe even Hoth Both offline and coop. Some new ships, new cosmetics (fuck I can’t believe I just asked EA for that). Just as long as they keep them microtransaction-free. I do agree with your review. Though on the control thing, I just tweaked some things around with sensitivity and stuff, and I ended up having the perfect setup with a DualShock. I’m quite amazed EA allowed this to be made. I am soo thankful Motive took the risk. And I’m sooo happy there’s some new GOOD Star Wars content out there. Jedi Fallen Order, Squadrons and Mandalorian have really pulled me back from the dark side after........the sequels.........ugh
I disagree. On xbox at least, challenges dont work properly. Achievments dont unlock, i beat the story mode, wheres my achievment? And multiplayer gets boring fast.
@@thanankongdoung394 im glad you like it. thats what i said, if your die hard fan you will like. I LOVED the star wars reference at first then it all went downhill after that. I think they used him as a way to trick ppl into thinking the story was really good. in reality, he is the only character tie in to the main trilogy. frisk and gunny are part of a new canon of stories with the last trilogy and i didnt care for that at all
I know my opinion is probably highly unpopular, but I did not like Star Wars: Squadrons. I thought the flight controls were crap, the story was meh, and the hud, cockpit and instrumentation design is overly generic and basic. I suppose the game scratches an itch for those that really want to dog fight in Star Wars ships but otherwise it's not worth the money and there are better space dog fighting games out there. I am however, biased because I think Star Wars media in general is getting incredibly boring and disappointing. Maybe it's just Star Wars fatigue after being being runover by the Star Wars hype train repeatedly for decades but it's all just getting to be same old same old to me.
Was looking at this for some flight fun but I've never been a fan of SW. If the flight is average and the story/gameplay is threadbare, it's probably not even worth $10 personally. Thanks for the warning!
A valve index and a virpl HOTAS setup, it amazing. HOTAS dead zone is an issue, but it doesn't make it unplayable, just not ideal. pedals do not work out of box, but you should be able to use 3rd party software to combine 2 devices into one to make it work.
I enjoyed the missions. The story was utter dog shit. Bland flat characters I didn't care about. Overall disappointing that I had no desire to replay missions. 7/10
Aye, the campaign was both short and both sides were in the same campaign. Story was uninteresting and conversations with squadron mates felt pointless. Why can't we have a starwars story that doesn't revolve around a bloody superweapon and imperial defectors
SKill up is becoming a contrarian lol, first battletoads and now this. I must say tho, i do think this game is much better than people give it credit for, mostly cause i love the dyanmic of having to manage your shields, offence and movement.

Hands on Throttle and Stick, bro.

It's okay, bro. :D
HOTAS stands for hands on throttle and stick. its basically a stick and throttle you can buy that looks and feels like the controls of a real plane.
@@tomsko863 almost everything you said was wrong 🤣
Shame HOTAS support is shit with 30% hard-set deadzone which makes aiming with joystick a real fucking mess. Hopefully they'll patch that one out.
The theory of this game being a VR game backworked into a non VR game makes so much sense and honestly explains a lot in my head.
"Anyway, I DIGRESS"
No problem, I totally understand how you feel.
"Missed opportunity"
That's putting it mildly..
I'd use "complete garbage "

This is why we fight the bs guys! I’ll be picking it up Friday.
It's a dead game.
The bane of flight games... HOTAS+VR is the true way to play it. I wish I had the cash to buy both 😂
For now, I'll just settle for a fun, solid, SW starfighter game.
You can also do co-op in the Fleet AI fight. Don't have to only play solo. This is where I spend most of my time in the game.
Maybe check it out on sale mate! I’m going to wait til it goes to $20 bc I’m cheap like that

You can get your "VR legs" but getting there is tough for some people and many don't think it is worth it.
@Will Pack you what?
Star Wars Squadrons is a underrated gem 🙌
if you play on controller I recommend switching throttle up/down to LT/LB gives you more control of your speed and maneuverability.
Skill Up: I dunno what this ship is called
Me: That would be the Tie Reaper, which was introduced in Rogue One, Was used as a personal ship by the 6th Sister in Fallen Order.
I loved Fallen Order, even with all its warts it was the most fun I'd had playing Star Wars in years.
It’s important to remember, EA didn’t deliver this, Motive did. This was their passion project and it’s in spite of EA that we got this.

depending on the game it can take a while to set up all the buttons properly. when you do its awesome
I picked mine up for Elite Dangerous, and can second what Giblix said. Once you nail down the controls, these are THE way to play.
Anybody know of a retailer in the US that isn't sold out of them? Seems everybody bought them all up when these flight sims started coming out.
You know you can change the control scheme on controllers to “aviator” that puts roll and pitch on R3 and yaw and throttle on L3, combined that with inverted pitch and boom! It feels like ace combat. So it was pretty ignorant just throwing controller under the bus.
Exactly what I did 👍
Thank you for that. I play this game on my PS4 and it feels unnatural to roll using the left stick compared to the right.
even with the basic controller control scheme I think it controls fine and haven't had any issues.
Aren't L3 and R3 buttons under respecive analog sticks?
A long time ago, i used to say
"EA makes awesome games"
Wish they would remember how good their games were.
“The reviews are in, my lord.” “Execute order EA, 66.” “It will be done, my lord.” (loot box, microtransaction droids deploy.)
i realize your joking but just so your aware they said no micro transactions or lootboxes will ever be coming to the game
God I hope that happens
Nice to see positivity on this. I'm glad there was no touching of the prequels hearing Thrawn's name etc was cool.

We're gating keeping flight sims now ok
exactly , this game is not much complex , ofc it is more complex than the average arcade crap where you just aim and shot but not much more

The sense of speed feels fine when you're next to a frame a reference (like a Star Destroyer). What people are complaining about is the fact that in space there's nothing to give you the sense that you're moving (cuz it's space), and speed is relative.

The concept is easy to understand, it's exactly the same as a vr headset but the screen isn't strapped to your face,
Instead, a webcam tracks your head movement and amplifies it in the game camera, so if you slightly rotate your head to the side your pilot will turn all the way around to look over his shoulder while you're still facing the screen.
Even when I'm not interested in the game, I still watch all skillup reviews

Currently playing this in VR with Hotas absolutely mind blowing you want to add an extra layer. Add a woojer edge vest all combined words can not describe how good of a VR experience this is.
"gigantic war of egos" - perfect way to sum up the sequel trilogy
Love this guy’s reviews but he’s always flexing his setup.
I played this entire game in VR on the PC with an Oculus Rift S running on an RTX 2080 Ti and it is AMAZING! This game is so cool in VR! Sitting in the cockpit of a tie fighter and flying through space is so damn fun!

But yeah its pretty rare.
Playing on PC with HOTAS, rudders and in VR. Star Wars never felt better. The deadzone issue is annoying but workable - even fixable with external programs. Performance is great on my rig. So happy this turned out great.
It's as if EA took one long look at themselves in the mirror and realized, "What has happened to us?"

That's a big IF.
Honest, non biased reviews. Best game review channel on youtube, no contest.
I wonder if EA intend to add microtransactions at a later date.
They have confirmed nothing along the lines if micro transactions or lootboxes or anything scummy will be added to the game.
@@samhyatt4863 sorry I was unclear, I was trying to say that they have released games in the past to good reviews and then once the review cycle is finished they have added microtransactions. A really scummy practice. Hope it's not the case here. Not like EA to actually release a reasonable priced game worth playing.
love ur reviews my guy
I wonder if they’ll pull an Activision & add scummy stuff later on.
They have confirmed nothing along the lines if micro transactions or lootboxes or anything scummy will be added to the game.
@@samhyatt4863 we'll see if they keep their word. Not uncommon for companies to back pedal
I’m sure they’re backing off MTXs for a while due to all the surprise mechanics stuff that was laughed out of parliament etc but I think to just say “they’ve learned their lesson” is pretty close minded,
I hope you’re right (for the fans sakes) but it’s guna take a lot more for me to trust EA enough to buy one of their games on launch.
All this means is that they haven’t found an ACCEPTABLE way to monetise it yet that won’t piss ppl off.
Maybe they learned after Fallen Orders success but you’re an idiot for taking their word for it.
It’s not like publishers haven’t changed their minds in the past is it?
A new super weapon. Wow, that's creative!
To be fair, it’s not really a superweapon, it’s a capital ship with a roided up tractor beam
Can't really understand why people like this so excited about this poorly executed game, it has nothing to do with how great was X-Wing
And it pushes politics like the sequel trilogy...
Im with you. Its so damn close that I almost dont care, but when he brought up how slow it felt, I knew exactly how he felt. X-Wing made you feel FAST
@@rebotsomat I disagree with him. The sense of speed is great in the game.
If you feel slow, it's because you ARE slow. Get better at boost drifting and shifting your subsystem power. Then you'll be fast.
@@TheFlypaste exactly. You have to charge your engines.
The story is fun (horribly balanced on Ace difficulty, especially imperial missions)
I loved every single one of the characters, and the last mission where I got to speed up into an asteroid field, on VR.....dude......I want MORE.
I’ve been loving the multiplayer, it’s already my newest addiction, and, while I love first person only (as a BF2 player who played cockpit only and always got hammered by 3rd person players)
Still, I do wish they’d add the option for 3rd person offline.
I do want more content though.....
How about some Legacy missions?.
Allow players to experience the battle of Yavin, Endor, maybe even Hoth
Both offline and coop.
Its funny to see those cable covers so people can walk over and not trip on big wires are still very much a thing in the future.
the story is meh,
for anyone who isnt big on the star wars universe, and arent playing multiplayer stay away
I love game story , It’s cliche but feeling like a real star wars plot I love for a star wars fan like me.
@@thanankongdoung394 im glad you like it. thats what i said, if your die hard fan you will like.
I LOVED the star wars reference at first then it all went downhill after that. I think they used him as a way to trick ppl into thinking the story was really good. in reality, he is the only character tie in to the main trilogy. frisk and gunny are part of a new canon of stories with the last trilogy and i didnt care for that at all
I live in eager anticipation for the day when someone who isn't Squarespace sponsors your video.
Love your reviews !
Can’t wait for your cyberpunk 2077 review
SKill up is becoming a contrarian lol, first battletoads and now this. I must say tho, i do think this game is much better than people give it credit for, mostly cause i love the dyanmic of having to manage your shields, offence and movement.
compared to other space games the flight mechanic is worse
@@attilapataki46 Ah yes, the massive 'space dogfight' genre.
When was the last good game in that genre made? Everspace? Strike Suit Zero?
@@rebotsomat its not massive obviously... but that doesnt make this one great
@@attilapataki46 Im pointing out that there really isnt anything to compare it to.
@@rebotsomat thats not true through.. sure there arent that many but there are games to compare it to
Skill Up: ‘Controller folk will do just fine but are at a disadvantage’
Me: Gets over 20 kills and no deaths in Dogfight mode with a controller.
‘Yeah I’m doing just fine.’
