I'm a cattle farmer from Namibia and have been using the same setup to keep the grass around my fence lines short for years. Found the best compromise between cutting ability and longevity to be a motorcycle chain. Cuts pretty well and lasts forever since it can bend and deflect around obstacles like rocks and stumps sticking out of the ground.

I was gonna see about scrap metal from work I can get, then this guy says chains, and we got lots of that we replace every year. I made a stove grate welding scrap chain together. Now it's gonna go on a modified lawnmower.

Nice rig. I had a great uncle who had a similar set-up. If I remember correctly, he used something like 1/4 in. X 4 in flat stock cut to fit between the tires in one solid piece. The cutting sides of the bar were sharpened about 6 in up each end. That cut his pastures about six inches, keeping the weeds knocked down. He must have used that thing at least thirty years. Good video, brought back memories.

Okay rebar is an extremely soft metal it's what we consider in the blacksmithing World junk metal it's too soft what you can do is get some used mowing blades and stick a bar through there and weld those mowing blades on there of course you want it facing the way that it turns but they're already hardened and people throw them away all the time if they're used I'm going to guess you're not aiming for Perfection you just want the damn grass cut and it'll do the job because those blades are hardened hope this helps you

It would be better to use a small engine and a blade. I made one years ago from a snapper deck and an 11 hp Briggs. It would cut really tall grass. I mowed grass you couldn't see over.

This kind of brings to mind a contraption that I made last summer.
I have one section at the rear of my yard that has fast growing tall weeds.
Using a weedeater left a big mess everytime I cut it so I came up with the idea of using a brush mower.
Have you seen the prices of brush mowers?
I came up with a cheap solution.
I bought a cheap Murry push mower with a 20" cut for $129.
I cut a trapazoid shape out of the front of the mower leaving about 3" on each side and exposed about 3" of blade in the front with an angle grinder/cutter.
Not only does it chop those weeds like a champ, when you run them over it mulches it pretty well to boot.
P.S. It also does a pretty darn good job of leveling fireant beds. 😃

the blade will go faster with smaller tires. but it would cut closer to the ground. look for a rear end around 4 to 1 ratio. how to get the gear ratio. hold one of axle solid, go to other side and mark axle on case and end of axle together evenly. mark input or drive shaft . go to turnable axle and rotate one time while counting revolutions on drive shaft coupling. like some go 3 and 1/2 turns so thats a 3.50 to one. so an old chevy truck could do 4 driveshaft turns plus a hair. A 4.11 to one. this don't work as well on posi types , you can do it but you'd need your thinking cap. I enjoyed your 1st time for me video so i'll subscribe.
