Perhaps, soldering the chain to the nut, bolt, and the disk, would help not to come loose that easy. Also, you need to keep it clean, lubricated, and not exposed to the weather. So it would not get rusted, and break more easily. Well, giving it a second thought, this whole thing is not that safe. Perhaps, that's why they never have sold, anything like it to the public. But he did show us a cute trick that I WILL use...a screw in the middle of the project and a squeeze-clamp and pencil to draw an adjustable circle. That was KEWL
I recall the day the boss handed us something similar to this. More over-engineered though, with big chain links like you'd find on a decent bike lock. Invented by an Italian farmer the paperwork said. Well we fitted it to the machines & away we went. Fucking incredible I can tell you. Smashes through brambles & even small trees with ease! Then one of the links breaks off & flies out so fast you can't even see it, just like a bullet.... At that point the whole head becomes imbalanced (we had four chains on ours). So you take a bolt cropper out of the van & cut the other three chains to the correct size, & away you go again. It was like playing russian roulette. The safe working distance is usually something like 5-10 metres with a regular strimmer. It went up to about 50m using that chain thing.
Someone got killed by a strimmer with a chain on it in the uk. It's one of those things that works great until it doesn't...and when it doesn't, it hurts or kills people. I doubt that there is any safe way to making something like this.
I can't tell you how hard I laughed reading your reply. Sounds terribly dangerous, but thank you for the entertainment! Sounds like you were a bit terrified as well.
Please to anyone who watches this. “DO NOT!”. I repeat “DO NOT” attempt to make this. It is dangerous beyond words. There are plenty of tested aftermarket products that are reasonably priced and above all safe to use as directed. This has design flaws all over it!
What if you wore really tall platform shoes and kept the chain parallel to the ground. Then it would only be a problem after it ricochets off something hard and heads in a random direction. Note thats not if it ricochets off, but when. Murphy has a law for a reason.
That takes all the fun out of life. Plus it's enjoyable to make stuff with your hands. I personally used grade 8 bolts, and a chainsaw chain in mine. I bored the first link a little to slide over the plate, then fed the grade 8 bolt through and welded the first link to the bolt and plate. I upgraded his idea to a better, safer, and more practical solution. Now I can even clear small brush, thick weed stems, for a clear path.
I just read a dozen or so comments. They are a great source of humor in these trying days. How about having just one longer chain? Wouldn't that allow the user to involuntarily move around, thus reducing his hard work? And an appendage?
Apart from it being extremely dangerous, it isn't cutting....it's bludgeoning. You WAY overloaded the bearings and drive. 10 secs of mechanical consideration would have ruled this approach out. Some people should just stay away from tools, it seems.
The best are the tiny bolts and thin disk that are supposed to hold the chain. I bet this guy has no clue about what dyjamic forces he unleashes, or what material fatigue is. Unbefuckingleavable.
there need notice that can stones or harder object in the grass or when hit the ground let damge it over time. it is additional force. a bciycle chain is hardened and not design for forces from side happen . this let outer segemts break sooner when suddenly forces from side happen. only when no segment overlap the protector it can be safe for thwe gras cutter, but it can fly to the neighbour

@@firstnamelastname7688 just bolt the saw blade and use it. I am kinda curious how just a saw blade would do. Which gets me to thinking, how about he cuts the round piece to look like a lawnmower blade and just uses that
My wife's cousin recently injured himself damn near fatally when a welded-on attachment (didn't get much details on the shape or size) to a gas-powered weed-eater blade came off at speed and hit him on the inside-top of the calf muscle, and severed an artery. He was out in the field, hit the ground and was trying to yell for help but was several hundred yards from his house. Somehow, someone heard or saw him and they went and got him from the field. The whole village chipped in and donated blood as he'd lost so much he was almost out of the survivable zone. A 2 week hospital stay recovering from the emergency 'surgery' they do here, (this is Thailand) plus the transfusions, and now several weeks still of limited motion and sensation. And, BTW, yes, he knows how to weld, done it for years. Welding ANYTHING to a blade which revolves at SUCH a high rate of speed is extremely dangerous. Stress and fatigue cracks from spinning and flexing, (especially if the rotating piece is out of balance by even the most MINUTE amount) can appear and grow in metals, and there's no real way to tell when or how they'll fail. After a while, one strike at a rock or almost-totally submerged pipe, etc. could easily be enough to knock off an attachment, especially if it's NOT the first strike. Personally, I think you should remove this vid. There have been many others advocating using chain and steel cable (from motorcycle brakes, etc.) as cutting lines, but this is probably the worst I've seen.. You are doing a genuine disservice to viewers AND THEIR PEOPLE, (since family goes through a traumatic event WITH their loved one). You are encouraging them (you know you are) , with COMPLETE DISREGARD for their varying mechanical-fabrication skill levels, all the variables of the different materials which may be pressed into use, and natural factors like terrain and handling experience, to ignore safety concerns, and attempt a (poorly engineered) modification to a piece of steel which, when used, will spin EXTREMELY fast, and create a very REAL and possibly lethal safety hazard, all for views, ego and $$. Sad.
I’m literally laughing at many of the brilliant comments. My 1st thought was how long will it take to ruin absolutely every bit of fencing surrounding this guys yard, and God forbid he has a gas meter/line in his yard like I do, because once that bad boy causes a leak and a simultaneous spark he may not need to worry about yard work ever again. 😂
I was thinking the same thing, if that chain hits a fence or something made of wood.... and also there's the chance of the chain breaking apart during use which is dangerous. Something like a steel wire from fencing would work, but once again if he hits some made of timber
I went to Stihl Gold training and they specifically talked about someone who died because of one of these. Do not under any circumstances make or use one of these, use approved mowing heads for your equipment.
Use a chainsaw chain instead of a bike chain, fasten multiple razor blades to it and then modify the shaft with a u-joint. Perhaps swinging it over head like nunchaku and cut the grass while you're upside-down doing flips.
Holy sheit, great mother of God, that's some death wish you are trying to fulfill! My favorite was putting away the welder, and bolting the chain on, so you can replace the chain whenever it comes off - BRILLIANT! Just go to Hope Depot and buy the blade.
Why not weld the chain directly to the plate ?? Why not use a worn edger blade that already has the correct hole ?? When that little bolt breaks the bit of chain, at 7,000 RPM, will go thru your window at 150 MPH !!
@Udhehf Hehcuw With FOUR MILLION views, I wonder how many STOOPID people tried this ? Chainsaw chains are thinner and would at least leave a better "finish" to the grass. No need to cut the chain - have it continuous across that "edger blade" .... Secure the chain with 6 spot-welds so if a few welds "let go" it won't throw the chain.
There used to be a book called Manifold Destiny that told you how to cook meals on the exhaust system of your vehicle. I used to wrap a loaf of garlic bread in two layers of foil, place it on my exhaust manifold. Voila, ready to eat after a half hour drive.
I would never dare to use something like that on my brushcutters, there’s a reason why no big tools manufacturers don’t have mowing blades like this, very dangerous in my opinion.
I am old enough to remember "old time" edgers. Basically a round blade you held in a vertical fashion to "edge" your lawn. String trimmers are much more safe and useful!
I'm only 35,the ole bad a** that I landscaped under for 15 yrs refused to use any powered handtools.still to this day I can cut a more crisp edged tree ring or flower bed by hand than most people can with a gas edger, just not quite as fast.
This is one of those super-efficient tool designs. All you have to do is hit concrete once, and you’ll never have to do any more work for the rest of your life.

Wow that`s a great D.I.Y. idea, and it has inspired me to make one similar to yours ,but it is for trimming hedges ,high branches from ladders etc,I have used 2 full length power saw chains each about 1 metre in length cut into 4x18 inches long & attached to a half inch plate metal disc with stretch bolts for safety similar to a propeller configuration of a plane on to a heavy duty high R.P.M 247 volt large drill chuck ,with modified twin handles to power the device. It is a bit tricky to keep it stable with both hands as it viciously tears its way through the leaves (at very high speed),thick branches , fencing posts, & masonry, etc one minor drawback is it sometimes comes away from the hedge and everything else it is completely destroying towards my head and chest, where by I have to force it back away from me so that the propeller like high speed chains carry on tearing their way through the leaves, and any thing else that just happens to be in its way it is very, very effective ,but alas it seems to have a mind of its own when in use,in other words it tends to travel to where it wants. The odd thing is that my neighbor keeps telling me ,pleading with me ,that it is extremely dangerous and could decapitate my head from my shoulders,or any other part of my body below my torso.I told him no way it will do that its a DIY project from Facebook its got to be safe ,they would not have allowed it to be posted if it could injure anyone,so go away and allow me to use this wonderful DIY tool,OK I have only tested it once up to now ,but I have not had a scratch from it as yet.Oh by the way I just love that music on the video,it is just like the start of a Health & Safety vid for using power tools.
I do not want to be anywhere near this when it breaks. Although I applaud the gentleman's creativity, there needs to be some serious analysis done with respect to strength and fatigue.
That's pretty cool and if a person shouldn't be using any type of lawn equipment that may end up hurting themselves and I won't use the word for those type of people or I should say if you have enough brains to use it without getting hurt the thing is amazing for the job I personally love it and thank God that's the way of the future should be thanks for showing and sharing
My coworker was mowing his mother-in-laws lawn when he hit a steel coat hanger, I always leave mine in the yard too, lol. A piece of it flew out of the mower and stuck into his leg, he looked down and passed right out. When he woke up he looked down and passed out again!!
This is a bit sketchy, next time try using the bolts in a double shear application instead of single shear at least. It’ll still be sketchy, but slightly less so.
yea , he need to attach the chain directly at the plate, from both side using the chain pin only ,not bolt. the bolt is the weakest link and the chain will fly off. Dangerous in my opinion...
I done something similar. I took ss cable and untwisted it till I got the size I wanted. Cut it to length and welded a nut on the end so it would stay in the factory housing. It worked wonderful around chain link fence. No more broken line.
@Donny D Probably had a few lawsuits or they'd still sell them. Speaking of "used to" have... Try finding a public lake or pool with a real diving board. Here in Jersey those are a thing of the past. I grew up on diving boards. Can't find one outside of a dive club now. Insurance companies refuse to insure them as a rule nowadays.
@Donny D Well I'm shocked they sell these. I could see this if the shielding on whackers was way better. But that crappy little half arch of plastic is not protecting against that chain.
You would have been better off leaving the corners on the piece of steel , maybe sharpen the ends ! The chain will break sending shrapnel ! The connection point of the chain would be better removing the roller at the end of the chain and using both sides to connect with the metal in the center , just stronger , still dangerous though ! Another Idea would be to make a s shaped steal blade .
The chains are much heavier and consequently, make the equipment less effective than it was in its original format. This will result from the decrease in the number of rotations per minute. In addition to this, the fuel consumption will increase because due to the increase in weight caused by the chains, you now need more fuel to get the same amount of work out of the tool.
Not only that, because they are heavier they will significantly reduce the life of the equipment. Manufacturers of commercial equipment will not warrantee string trimmers if the string guard is removed, which many landscapers do. The reason is the guard has a cutter in it that keeps the string at a pre determined length. Longer string is heavier and causes premature wear. The longer string slows down the weed wacker, wears the clutch, and can snap shafts inside the stem. In other words, beats the shit out of the equipment.
I’ll keep my grass long and my feet attached I think! Just saving up my money to buy a replacement flexible blade as they are around £1.50 for a pack of 5!
The most scary part is that you assume this is bad, when manufacturers actually do put these things as accessories in with their weed wackers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Teste_decespugliatore.jpg

So it would not get rusted, and break more easily. Well, giving it a second thought, this whole thing is not that safe. Perhaps, that's why they never have sold, anything like it to the public. Too big of a liability.
@@felixramos3078 there is practically no redundancy you can add to that ballistic weapon of a lawn tool to make it safe. It is more like a trebuchet than a weed-eater in that it is 100% going to launch a handful of chain links really, really fast.
If the chain breaks free that plastic guard won’t stop it. Awesome shin disabler you’ve created there. 👍🏽
Not to mention if the chain breaks and hits you in the head or takes out your eye and half of your face.
Yeah. I really trust those tiny screws not to fail. This looks incredibly hazardous!

There need to be disclaimers on some of these DIY videos. Just because you can doesn't mean you should!
Chain will break soon also.
About the only thing that would make that more dangerous, is if you used a chainsaw chain, instead of a bicycle chain.

On his follow up vid to this he shows how to make your own crutches and the upside of only needing to buy one shoe.
Phew! Glad you ground down the little sharp ends of those spinning death chains that are held on by a pair of grade 2 4-40 left-hand thread(???) machine screws suffering about 7 G’s.
#DIY #Woodworking # Craft Please stick to working wood using threaded scew as piviot is going to snap and fire the length of chain like a minature grape shot.
Wow! it even cuts delicate clover and grass! Can't wait to make one of my own.
This would be great in the upcoming Mad Max movie
02:13 A true mark of a professional. Using calipers as dividers for scribing. Adds to the calipers level of precision. Que fundo de quintal.
But he did show us a cute trick that I WILL use...a screw in the middle of the project and a squeeze-clamp and pencil to draw an adjustable circle. That was KEWL
You have impressed many with your ingenuity.
You also wouldn't catch me within a mile of that death machine when you turn it on.
It’s so well balanced. How can anything possibly go wrong???
А если это прилетит либо себе либо кому нибудь
If you noticed, the label on the solvent bottle was printed in Cyrillic (Russian) which probably explains everything.
Might also explain why the manicured lawns belong to fatherless families all of a sudden.
no, the video is backwards
Wow such a great upgrade. You went from something that can cut grass to something that can cut grass and detach ankles.
Fantastic Planet👍👍
I don't have a grass garden to keep, but the screws storage at 2:25 is a great idea!
That's nice and everything but isn't there something irritating about being too organized ?
Negative. Terrible way to stores hardware.
That system was outdated in the 40s. There's organized, and then there's just hanging on to crap.
My grandpa had one of those BABY FOOD JAR Screw-parts centers in his garage, back in the 50's.
That's actually a great idea. You eliminate the need to keep buying strong.
I've seen this using zip ties instead of a chain. Easy to replace & won't hurt if it breaks.
Please to anyone who watches this. “DO NOT!”. I repeat “DO NOT” attempt to make this. It is dangerous beyond words. There are plenty of tested aftermarket products that are reasonably priced and above all safe to use as directed. This has design flaws all over it!
Yes, I agree.
Q: Why not start with a Skill Saw blade?
That is what I was thinking.
Lol, I was thinking exactly that too.
Because that would be called an Edger
My stihl weedeater has a sawblade attachment that cuts 2 to 3 inch trees like they're straws. I'll stick with that vs trying this death trap.
Yes, it would be much safer.
@@YouD0ntSay Note the bottle at 3:54 - the label is in Russian. This is what they are forced to do in the underdeveloped world where there are no real tools.
He should have bolted the chain to a 6 inch circular saw blade and make it more interesting
@@firstnamelastname7688 just bolt the saw blade and use it. I am kinda curious how just a saw blade would do. Which gets me to thinking, how about he cuts the round piece to look like a lawnmower blade and just uses that
Not seem anything this daft since the A Team. Darwin award winner right here
My wife's cousin recently injured himself damn near fatally when a welded-on attachment (didn't get much details on the shape or size) to a gas-powered weed-eater blade came off at speed and hit him on the inside-top of the calf muscle, and severed an artery.
But hey at least he used gloves whem he was making this 🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅😅🤣
I was thinking the same thing, if that chain hits a fence or something made of wood.... and also there's the chance of the chain breaking apart during use which is dangerous. Something like a steel wire from fencing would work, but once again if he hits some made of timber
Дуже гарно виглядає, але не практично, зовсім скоро трімер вийде із строю.

The flexible chain will wrap around an object it can't cut, stalling the engine or breaking the driveshaft.
nope,,,,its gonna fly off into the neighbors car window LONG before that happens!! LOL That baby bolt he welded on will snap pretty easy...haha
Would have used a master link instead of the soft screws he welded to plate to attach chain.
Agree, that would be a better setup but still dangerous.
Or through his shin

@Udhehf Hehcuw With FOUR MILLION views, I wonder how many STOOPID people tried this ?
Chainsaw chains are thinner and would at least leave a better "finish" to the grass.
No need to cut the chain - have it continuous across that "edger blade" ....
Secure the chain with 6 spot-welds so if a few welds "let go" it won't throw the chain.
And into the forehead of the person standing behind it.

And in next weeks episode of Impractical Projects, we show you how to cook an entire meal using your car exhaust!
In the car,,,,,,,,,, while sitting in it.
The engine block is more effective. Guys in semi trucks cook whole chickens on the block while they drive the 30 mins to a couple of hours.
There used to be a book called Manifold Destiny that told you how to cook meals on the exhaust system of your vehicle. I used to wrap a loaf of garlic bread in two layers of foil, place it on my exhaust manifold. Voila, ready to eat after a half hour drive.
Love it.

Based on where he's running that thing it seems a lawn mower would've been 600% more efficient.
Mine works great. And I don’t mind retouching up the fence posts every single time I use it.
🤣🤣🤣🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
I would never dare to use something like that on my brushcutters, there’s a reason why no big tools manufacturers don’t have mowing blades like this, very dangerous in my opinion.
Stones, etc are a factor as well.

Wow that`s a great D.I.Y. idea, and it has inspired me to make one similar to yours ,but it is for trimming hedges ,high branches from
ladders etc,I have used 2 full length power saw chains each about 1 metre in length cut into 4x18 inches long & attached to a half inch plate metal disc with stretch bolts for safety similar to a propeller configuration of a plane on to a heavy duty high R.P.M 247 volt large drill chuck ,with modified twin handles to power the device.

Remove the bolts, and use the master link through the holes, it's a Lil safer than the leverage against the flimsy bolt
Why not just weld the 1st chain link to the metal plate. I still would not use this contraption but that would make it safer.
@@wok-ur-katt1995 believe me, I would but most of these glue gun gladiators who think they can diy ain't got a welder.
That would be an enormous amount of strain even on my Echo.
I done something similar. I took ss cable and untwisted it till I got the size I wanted. Cut it to length and welded a nut on the end so it would stay in the factory housing. It worked wonderful around chain link fence. No more broken line.

Try finding a public lake or pool with a real diving board. Here in Jersey those are a thing of the past.
I grew up on diving boards. Can't find one outside of a dive club now. Insurance companies refuse to insure them as a rule nowadays.
@Donny D
Well I'm shocked they sell these.
I could see this if the shielding on whackers was way better. But that crappy little half arch of plastic is not protecting against that chain.
All that extra weight has got to be amazing for the clutch plate
Clutch plate, that's funny.
Definitely a project for the kids this school holidays
so when it breaks it can go through your leg instead of bounce off, the speed of that end link is probably similar to a bullet
It's got a plastic guard👍🤣
You would have been better off leaving the corners on the piece of steel , maybe sharpen the ends ! The chain will break sending shrapnel ! The connection point of the chain would be better removing the roller at the end of the chain and using both sides to connect with the metal in the center , just stronger , still dangerous though ! Another Idea would be to make a s shaped steal blade .
Another idea would be to leave the chain on your bike so you can pedal down to the store for more trimmer line.
I can tell you've really thought this through.
@@jt7663 i live it. One of my businesses is small engine repair, and we do a lot of commercial equipment.
I’ll keep my grass long and my feet attached I think! Just saving up my money to buy a replacement flexible blade as they are around £1.50 for a pack of 5!
They can kill each other with one stroke of the chain.
The most scary part about this is that someone is actually going to try this....
The most scary part is that you assume this is bad, when manufacturers actually do put these things as accessories in with their weed wackers.

Also, those four chains in that wiki picture were much shorter than those bicycle chains used in this vid, which would clearly do more damage to you if they cut loose and hit you, a pet, or someone else in the vicinity, but you go ahead and make one, just don't come hopping to me, with your foot hanging off, if it all goes pear shaped 😆😆😆

A better way to do this is to use the outer plates of the chain top and bottom of the disc and join with the chain pin. Much much safer.
Then you can double the size and take off the guard.
